The word of the day: comeback. By now, you have heard that dozens of times. To tell you the truth, I’m already sick of it. I don’t understand how so many media outlets can say the same thing. On all the national television networks it was comeback, comeback, comeback. On all the local Boston media (which covers the Manchester, NH area) it was comeback, comeback, comeback. Can they spoon feed us anymore? Maybe the television stations are taking the easy road because all their pundits and polling was wrong in the days leading up to the New Hampshire primary. Last week, according to the media, Senator Barack Obama was going to be the nominee and probably the next President. But, today the nomination is Senator Hillary Clinton’s. And one other sidenote, CNN even carried one of Senator John McCain’s speeches live this morning. Wow. What a change!
I’m not trying to take away anything from the big wins for both Senators Hillary Clinton and John McCain. But, New Hampshire is a funny state. The state has been right on in selecting who the Democratic nominee will be in the past few races. In 2004, New Hampshire voters selected John Kerry. Four years before that, Al Gore won here. However, this is the same state in 1992 that voted for Paul Tsongas (though he was from neighboring Massachusetts) and Gary Hart in 1984. On the other side, New Hampshire Republicans selected John McCain in 2000 who obviously lost the nomination to President George W. Bush. In 1996, Pat Buchanan won here, but ultimately lost the nomination to Senator Bob Dole. This is a historic Presidential race. There is no Vice President seeking his party’s nomination for the first time in over 50 years. The voting alignments are configured much differently than we have ever seen. One state won’t decide who either parties nominee is. As Ankarlo said this morning on News/Talk 92.3 KTAR, the pundits don’t know what’s in your head and keep getting it wrong. So do us a favor, stop with the comebacks, the heir apparents and whatever other coronations you have. I just don’t buy it. And somebody please tell me what exactly did Hillary Clinton comeback from? She might not want to overplay that hand.
