Doug & Wolf: Chick Picks - Week 4

chickpicks4.jpg

Schlereth: The origin of “Stinkhead”

As a rookie with the Skins I was talking to some of my fellow rookies about growing up in Alaska, I had just gotten off the phone with my sister who taught school in an Eskimo village, just off the Kuskequim River.

She was heading back for another year of school and she was telling me about the kids having their stinkhead festival soon. Of course, I asked what the stinkhead festival was, and she informed me that the villagers would catch the first run of salmon, cut off their heads, bury the heads in the ground and dig them up 4 to 6 weeks later to eat the rotten heads.

Henceforth the name stinkheads. As you can imagine, my sister told me the smell permeated the village.

As I told the story, some of the veteran players had overheard these alaskan tales, and being that I was from Alaska they instantly dubbed me stinkhead.

Not too long after that, that nickname was shortened to stink and the rest is history.

Now it is true, that I used to pee my pants during games, but my incontinence problem has nothing to do with the nickname.

Doug and Wolf: September 27, 2007

Here’s what happened today on Doug and Wolf:

* What’s going on with the D-Backs? Are the kids finally gripping? We take calls from D-Back fans. Why was Livan in for so long?

* The NL pennant race is a mess. DW has no idea who’s going to be playing in the postseason. Will the Rockies ever lose again?

* We react to what the Suns are saying about Shawn Marion wanting to be traded.

* How should the city or the state honor “The Godfather of Phoenix Sports”, Jerry Colangelo. The popular opinion is a street, but no one can figure out when.

Grid Iron Griddle:

Doug & Wolf go through the top college football games of the weekend. The biggest game of the week could be on Friday when West Virginia takes on South Florida. Wolf thinks his ‘Neers could be in trouble.

Guests:

Wolf’s brother and Steelers Radio Analyst Craig Wolfley: Craig talked about what the Steelers and the media are saying about facing Whisenhunt and Grimm. The older Wolf gave us some insight on the Wolfley family appetite.

ESPN college football analyst Bob Davie: Bob thinks that Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy crossed the line and went too far with his comments. We give Davie props for his Michigan pick over Penn State. Coach Davie is not impressed with the Big 10 overall.

D-Backs play-by-play voice Greg Schulte: Greg joined us an hour before the first pitch. Even though they have lost three in a row, Schulte says the clubhouse was still upbeat today.

Tomorrow’s Show:

Mark Schlereth, ESPN NFL Analyst at 8:00 a.m.

Doug and Wolf: September 26, 2007

Here’s what happened today on Doug and Wolf:

* Shawn Marion told numerous media outlets he wants to be traded. Should the Suns keep’em or trade’em? The guys give their opinion and take calls.

* Doug & Wolf get in an REO Speedwagon mood and say “It’s time for Marion to fly” and “He can’t fight this feeling anymore” Cue the symbols!

* D-Backs lose a heartbreaker last night. The Padres will continue to free fall and watch out for the Rockies.

Grid Iron Griddle:

Doug and Wolf give their NFL Power Poll. They are now both believers in the Pack.

Guests:

ESPN baseball insider Buster Olney: We gave Buster his props for picking the D-Backs and sticking with the team through the ups and downs. He did say that the Rockies are so good right now that if they make the playoffs, they will go to the World Series.

NFL Hall of Famer Mike Ditka - Powered by BodogFootball.net: Ditka said that Rex Grossman is not the only reason for the beginning of the season. Coach Ditka believes the Bears offensive line and defense are overrated. He knows that Matt Leinart is the future of the Cardinals, but doesn’t know if Kurt Warner doesn’t give the team a chance to win now.

D-Backs play-by-play voice Greg Schulte: Greg said the good news coming out of last night’s game was that the Dbacks are still in first place. He is hoping the Dbacks wrap up a playoff spot before they get to Colorado.

Doug & Wolf NFL Power Poll - Week 4

Doug’s NFL Power Poll - Week 4

1. PATRIOTS: How good is Belichik? Parcells never won a SB without him and Belichik’s former coordinators? Weiss has two offensive TD’s and Crennel–see Browns (if you’ve got time to go that far down on the list)

2. COLTS: Are the Broncos good? (we’ll find out)

3. PACKERS: Told you so

4. COWBOYS: Will be 5-0 on 10/14, then the fun starts

5. STEELERS: Didn’t want them in the top 5 because of schedule but who else?

6. TITANS: As I’m typing this I can’t believe it but when you’re only loss is to the Colts by 2 points don’t you have to the best 2-1 team?

7. SEAHAWKS: Beating Cincy means they’re good—schedule says they’ve got two tough games left

8. RAVENS: Middle of the road in every stat but schedule sets up for 6 game winning streak before meeting the Burgh

9. BRONCOS: Best team/bad division (BTW, they only had 47 yards rushing v Jags)

10. PANTHERS: Suddenly that Texans loss doesn’t look so bad–could be 5-1 before meeting Colts

11. CHARGERS: Marty, Marty, where for art thou? (don’t worry, Chiefs are next)

12. JAGUARS: Lose to Titans by 3 despite giving up 175 yards to Chris Brown in week 1—beat Denver and give up only 47 yards rushing, if this team is improving…

13. TEXANS: Matt Schaub v ATL, let the payback begin

14. BENGALS: Beat the Pats and that whole Browns thing will be forgiven

15. BEARS: They can’t block, catch, run, and four starters on defense are either out or questionable—good luck Griese

16. GIANTS: I don’t know what to think of the NFC East, so I put the rest of them together

17. REDSKINS: 1st half v NY=17-3, 2nd half=0 1st downs in first 25 minutes

18. EAGLES: Back-to-back games in the Meadowlands and then ‘da Bears

19. JETS: Great time for a big run — only leave the State once until 11/22 (did you know Pennington’s the second-highest rated QB?)

20. BUCS: Did you think there would ever be a day that Cadillac would hate being compared to LT, LJ, and Stephen Jackson—he’s just as bad

21. LIONS: John, can you win 10 games if you can lose like that?

22. 49ERS: Steelers are up 37-9 and SF gets their first TD with 2 minutes left, that’s why they’re the worst offense in the NFC

23. CARDINALS: Two road losses by 3 points a piece, not bad (not good either, but not bad)

24. SAINTS: Over/under on when Reggie Bush is broken in half = 7 games

25. CHIEFS: LT v LJ, remember when this was a dream fantasy match up?

26. VIKINGS: How bad are you when the opposing RB is calling out his coaches and the play calling after they beat you

27. RAIDERS: Only Oakland could feel so great about beating Cleveland

28. BROWNS: Crenel’s a defensive genius? No one has given up more TD’s (it’s not all bad - at least their only 2nd worst in rushing yards allowed and total yards allowed)

29. RAMS: what idiot picked this team to make the playoffs?

30. FALCONS: Harrington’s actually not doing that bad—work with me here, I’m trying

31. DOLPHINS: Chiefs chose Huard over Green—NFL passer ratings = Huard 23rd, Green 24th

32. BILLS: Offense - worst in pts and yards, and defense? (remember how the Browns were second worst in most categories): you found the culprit

Doug and Wolf: September 25, 2007

Here’s what happened today on Doug and Wolf:

* Are the Suns laying the groundwork to trade Shawn Marion? It certainly sounds like it. We debated if Marion should be traded.

* The Padres and Mets are free fallin’ (cue Tom Petty). Doug & Wolf believe that the D-Backs need to take care of business against Pirates and not leave it up to the Rockies series.

* Wolf gives us an update on his Colorado Rockies baseball team.

* Who are the world’s ugliest men and where does Tom Petty rank in this conversation?

Grid Iron Griddle:

Oklahoma State football coach blows up at a columnist about a story she wrote. Did he have the right to do that and when is it ok to criticize a college athlete?

Guests:

ASU football coach Dennis Erickson: Coach Erickson talked about the Sun Devils cracking the top 25 and their first road trip of the season.

Cardinals defensive end Bertrand Berry: Bertrand gave us a player perspective on the Cardinal quarterback controversy. Like Wolf, Bertrand didn’t understand the penalty on Adrian Wilson.

Tomorrow’s Show:

Buster Olney, ESPN MLB Insider

Mike Ditka, NFL Hall of Famer

Ed Cunningham, ESPN/ABC College Football Analyst

Doug: For Your Viewing Pleasure

Doug and Wolf: September 24, 2007

Here’s what happened on Doug and Wolf:

* Kurt Warner came in for Matt Leinart and almost led the Cardinals to a victory. Who will start on Sunday for the Cardinals? We took calls on yesterday’s game.

* Milton Bradley and an umpire could help the D-Backs to an NL West. Wolf’s Rockies are red hot and could win the NL Wild Card.

* DW goes through the top games and news coming out of yesterday’s NFL games.

* We get into a debate Buffalo Wings and Crab Cakes. Some how the country of Buffalo has polluted Wolf’s mind again.

Grid Iron Griddle:

The specials on today’s menu were Notre Dame’s historically bad start to their season. Doug and Wolf comment on Charlie Weis’ arrogance and how he is getting what he deserved. ASU debut in the top 25, how good are they?

Guests:

Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt: Coach Whisenhunt talked about the quarterback situation. Whisenhunt would not comment on the controversial Adrian Wilson hit. He said that nothing good would come from it.

D-Backs play-by-play voice Greg Schulte: Greg warned that the Pirates will not lay down in their three game series with the Dbacks. He is a little fearful of the final series of the season with the Colorado Rockies.

Tomorrow’s Show:

Dennis Erickson, ASU Football Coach at 7:20

Bertrand Berry, Cardinals Defensive End at 8:00
