Doug & Wolf: Sumo wrestling on ASU’s campus

Dwight or Amare - Who’s better?

Doug and Wolf, Back on Campus: Live from ASU - Day 5

Here’s what happened today on Doug and Wolf:

* Suns take on the NBA’s best team (record wise), and perhaps the best young player in the game, Dwight Howard. But, who would be the better fit for the Suns system, Howard or Amare? Wolf says Stoudemire, but most callers disagree and would prefer Howard. Doug would go with David Howard. We’re not sure why – or, who David Howard even is.

* Big game in Big D’ last night. The Packers lose to the Cowboys and lose Bret Favre in the process. Wolf was impressed by the depleted Packers and thinks a playoff rematch in Dallas would be good thing for Green Bay, because their pass heavy offense is not conducive to January conditions at Lambeau.

Gridiron Griddle:

ASU radio analyst Jeff Van Raaphorst joined the guys to talk about “The Duel in the Desert.” He’s predicting a Sun Devils win, contingent upon a strong running game. He doesn’t know who David Howard is either.

Chick Picks

Gayle, Doug and Wolf all like ASU over UA. Greg Brady likes UA - but he dresses funny and is just strange in general. Gayle and Wolf also like the Colts, while Doug’s going for the upset with Jacksonville. Gayle and Doug, however, agree on the Giants over the Bears, while Wolf is the lone one going with Chicago.

Guests:

* ESPN NFL analyst Mark Schlereth: Schlereth agrees with Wolf that Green Bay was foolish to abandon their identity of quick strike passes early in Dallas in favor of the deep passing game. Schlereth thinks the Browns are for real, and the Cardinals’ depleted secondary will have its work cut out for them on Sunday.

Big bully

Doug and Wolf, Back on Campus: Live from ASU - Day 4

Here’s what happened today on Doug and Wolf:

* Suns lose to the Rockets. The guys try to figure out what happened.

* DW talked about what the impact on the Cardinals defense will be with Adrian Wilson out for the season.

* Cardinals cornerback and longtime friend of Sean Taylor, Antrelle Rolle made this huge national story a local story. Rolle doesn’t think Sean Taylor’s death was an accident and that he was targeted. These statements really hit home with Doug and Wolf.

Grid Iron Griddle:

One of the biggest games in the NFL is tonight and a large part of NFL fans will not be able to see it. The guys talked about the feud between the NFL Network and cable companies. Can the NFL bully the cable companies like they have everyone else? Wolf said yes and Doug said no. DW then broke down and gave their predictions on the game.

Guests:

Todd McShay, ESPN College Football and NFL Draft Expert: Todd said the two best teams in college football today are USC and Georgia. This year’s national championship game is destined not to be sexy to the casual college football fan.

Bob Davie, ESPN College Football Analyst: Bob previewed the “Duel in the Desert”. He told us from personal experience why Mike Sherman will succeed at Texas A&M.

Mike Ditka, NFL Hall of Famer: Coach Ditka talked about how he would handle the Sean Taylor tragedy as a coach. He likes the Brett Favre and the Packers to be the Cowboys.

Al McCoy, Suns Hall of Fame Broadcaster: Al gave his thoughts on last night’s loss to the Houston Rockets.

Tomorrow’s Show:

Darren Woodson, ESPN NFL Analyst and former Sun Devil player at 7:20 a.m.

Jeff Van Raaphorst, Sun Devils Football Analyst at 7:40 a.m.

Mark Schlereth, ESPN NFL Analyst at 8:00 a.m.

Doug’s Mailbag: Raider hater

Mr. Franz,

I just wanted to write you that I love Doug and Wolf in the morning. I listen to the show every morning on the way to work and when I can during the early part of my day. My wife doesn’t get the show, she thinks all sports talk shows are soap opera’s for men.

Today, I received notification that I am leaving for Fort Dix, New Jersey to get ready for my deployment to Iraq. It will suck that I will miss your show in the morning, but rest assured, when I return, I will once again be a loyal listener.

GO D-Backs!!

GO Sun Devils!!

GO Cards (Even though I am a Patriots fan!!)

Thanks & B.Rgds

James E. Billingsley

Rear Detachment Officer

56th Military Police Company

I am humbled and floored that anyone about to defend my freedom would say good-bye on his way.

Thanks for listening and defending.

God be with you during your deployment and may He return you home safely.

Hello Doug,

I absolutely love the show and I try to listen to it every morning. I just have one problem. You come across as being a Raider hater. Granted I know they’ve been bad for the past 4 years, but I think they are starting to turn things around. I’ll bet it’s a little bit more difficult to promote a team that has had very little success for the past few decades. I mean as far as I know, which isn’t much, they haven’t had a 10 win season since 1976 and they’ve only won one playoff game which was in 1998. All teams go through their low points, except for the Cardinals who have had low points ever since they came here. Look at Cincinnati. It seem like they had an early first round pick every year in the 90s and they couldn’t turn their season around. Show some sympathy for the Raiders. That’s all I ask. This new coach has them on the right track and it’s only a matter of time before they are of the elite. By the way, I am a Raider fan, but not the stereotypical one. I do have a job and a life outside of the Raiders and I don’t paint my face and wear Halloween costumes, so I can understand why you would make fun of them. Quite frankly, I make fun of them. I feel you don’t need to paint your face and wear costumes to be a true fan. So you can continue to make fun of Raider fans. But be more sympathetic to the team. They are on their way up.

Chris

I am a Raider hater but that won’t cloud my judgment of the team.

I will give them credit when they deserve it despite my hatred, but I will never like them.

Since they just won their first divisional game in four years, I better start paying attention.

Thanks for listening despite my feelings.

Doug:

I’m still bent over David Stern’s job security.

I am very pro the media, but they stopped short. How many lies before this guys is fired?

He said that Amare & Boris should have been restrained and they were.

He said the rule is clear, but it says the vicinity of the bench. They were in the vicinity.

He doesn’t want to interpret intent, but Duncan came off the bench and Stern did interpret his intent.

He said the officials gambling rule was to broad, so he put it aside. I thought he said “Part of playing (officiating) in the NBA is knowing the rules. The rule is the rule.”

This guy is a pompous a## and got off easy by the Phoenix media.

He should be fired, although drawn and quartered would be more appropriate for this loser.

Jerry C for Commish.

Rob

I thought the media went after him reasonably by even going down this road. I must admit though, if the media goes after him, aren’t they showing their own personal bias in regards to the situation. Although I’m labeled as media, I’m a little different. I’m allowed and expected to be an opinionated blow-hard, reporters aren’t.

As far as your choice for a new commissioner is concerned, your opinion can not be improved upon.

Thanks for listening.

Doug:

You guys ever think that you may have listeners south of Van Buren? It sickens me to think that you feel that south Phoenix is somehow beneath you two.

Tony

I can easily understand why anyone would be offended by that.

I actually wish people won’t be offended while we do it.

In case you don’t know the story, when the Cardinals moved to Phoenix from St. Louis, the FBI met with the players and team personnel. They were told to never go south of Van Buren. Wolf talks about what an impression that made on him that the government knew there was a problem area in the city but was just telling people to avoid it instead of doing something about it.

I know it completely sounds like arrogance on our part and we should get ripped for it, however, we completely mean it in the context of Wolf’s story and not in a “Holier than thou” way.

I hope there’s a way you can understand.

Doug,

As fans can be we expect all things out of the Suns? Rationally, Steve Nash has a point (regarding championships aren’t won in November). And I believe that Steve recognizes, as the rest of us do, last year should’ve been a championship for Phoenix. He may not say it, but actions speak louder than words. Last year was a great example of why a team not only need be great to win a championship, but sometimes lucky as well. So San Antonio was not the better team, but the luckier (Stern Factor) team. As a fan, I’m frustrated because I want the Suns to crush every opponent, but knowing that I want the championship more, I’m willing to be more patient. However if the championship isn’t achieved, what legacy does Steve leave?

Darryl

I completely understand your point.

My frustration stems from belief in just how good this team really is. When they play at their tempo, they can’t be beat. I know winning and losing isn’t a decision. Here’s the catch, the tempo they play at can completely be determined by themselves. If they decide to play with energy and push the tempo, I think they can’t be stopped. If I’m right that they are the best team in the NBA when they play at their tempo (and I think they are almost unbeatable at that tempo) that would mean the outcome of the game is determined by their desire to play up tempo.

I know I have a simplistic view of the world and everything follows a simple flow chart but I actually mean this team is so good that it can be that easy. If they play up tempo and lose (like versus Golden State), I accept that and recant. I just don’t think they’re pushing themselves.

Gambo’s endorsements

Doug and Wolf, Back on Campus: Live from ASU - Day 3

Here’s what happened on Doug and Wolf:

* With all of the money that Gambo has from his endorsements, you figure he could pay someone to teach him how to park. He was involved in a hit run at the Sports 620 KTAR parking lot.

* Suns play the Rockets tonight. DW react to Coach D’s verbal beat down of his team energy on the 620 SportsLine last night.

* Cardinals’ coach Ken Whisenhunt shows what kind of leader he was by admitting his mistake and cutting punter Matt Barr.

* DW NFL Power Poll: The Patriots continue to dominate and both guys have different view on the worth of the Colts.

Grid Iron Griddle:

What are the best and worst traditions in college football? Could Mike Price be the new/old coach of Washington State? God have mercy on all of our souls!

Guests:

Suns analyst Dan Majerle: Dan thinks this is the best Suns team he has ever seen. Yao Ming has exceeded Majerle’s expectations.

Herb Sendek, ASU Basketball Coach: Coach Sendek talked about the progress that his team is experiencing early in the season.

Tomorrow’s Show:

Todd McShay, ESPN College Football and NFL Expert at 5:40 a.m.

Mike Ditka, NFL Hall of Famer at 6:20 a.m.

Bob Davie, ESPN College Football Analyst at 7:20 a.m.

Doug: D’Antoni Call Outs

Who’s at fault for the Suns struggles?

Or are they even struggling?

Mike D’Antoni continues to blast his own team and fans for showing a lack of intensity. Last night (11-27) on 620 SportsLine, Coach told Dave Burns that the Suns’ team two years ago treated every game like it was Christmas morning and this team doesn’t have consistent energy.

The team is fighting the malaise of his team and its fans. But the team is 11-3 going into tonight’s game against Houston and they would have struggled against Golden State no matter how enthusiastic they played.

Some teams are just bad match-ups.

I think Denver, Atlanta, and the Warriors are all difficult games for Phoenix because of they’re as athletic as the Suns, but they’re longer and stronger, so is he kidding? I think he sees a problem and is calling it out now.

I support him completely.

I think he’s had enough time to reflect on last year’s postseason to realize one thing: What’s the Game 1 excuse? Sure we all know it’s blowout the Sterns Game 2, Donaughy Game 3, show ‘em up in 4, suspensions in 5, and being exhausted and on the road in 6.

Yet what happened in game one?

I don’t want to hear about Nash’s nose either because his bloody nose cost the Suns the chance for Nash to bail them out from their lack of fire. If the team would have played Game 1 like they did in Game 2, we’d all remember where we stood during the championship parade. The Suns lost Game 1 against the Sterns because they figured they’d be fine and they weren’t.

I think D’Antoni needs to use his bench more. I think D’Antoni needs to realize how easily it will be for this team to tune him out. I think D’Antoni needs to use his subs to punish the people that aren’t getting the message. I think he can’t really play this card when the playoffs get closer. There are quite a few things I’d like to see and I think D’Antoni is laying the ground work to move in those directions.

Only D’Antoni knows what should be expected from this team. If he’s not satisfied with being 11-3, why should we?

Sumo wrestling incident

Doug and Wolf: Back on Campus: Live from ASU - Day 2

Here’s what happened today on Doug and Wolf:

* We have sumo wrestling and a pizza eating contest going on around the show.

* DW reacts to the tragic loss of Redskins Safety Sean Taylor. Wolf talked about how the players will try to get ready for this weekend’s game.

* Suns lose to the Golden State Warriors. Is the Suns-Warriors style of play the future of the NBA?

Grid Iron Griddle:

The Monday Night Football game was a mess! Should the Steelers and Dolphins have even been allowed to play last night with the conditions of the field? Doug says, no. Wolf says, yes.

Guests:

ASU football coach Dennis Erickson: Erickson talked about the “Duel in the Desert” and getting over the USC loss.

Cardinals defensive end Bertrand Berry: Bertrand gave his thoughts on Sean Taylor’s untimely death and the loss to the 49ers.

Tomorrow’s Show:

Dan Majerle, Suns analyst at 6:20 a.m.

Doug’s NFL Power Poll - Week 13

1.PATRIOTS: If others follow the Eagles game plan, the Pats will be beat

2. COWBOYS:

NFC supremacy goes to Dallas

3. PACKERS: As long as it’s close, I won’t drop them after their loss to DAL

4. JAGUARS:

Wolf recants on INDY this Monday morning

5. COLTS: Let me be the first to say it, the Colts will not be in the AFC Championship game

6. STEELERS: I don’t care about the weather, 3-0 to the Dolphins shows how far this team has to come

7. BROWNS:

Jamal Lewis cares so this team is actually good

8. BUCS: Did you pick them to win 10 games (I didn’t either but I am now)

9. GIANTS: Last week I told you I’ve been right on every Giants game—never mind

10. CHARGERS: Could easily finish 11-5 but it doesn’t matter because they still have Norv and Phillip and they’re not winning a playoff game

11. SEAHAWKS: Let me get this straight, you lose to New Orleans and you need a STL QB fumble on 4th and goal to win?

12. LIONS: Need to win 4 of 5 to get to 10 wins (still has GB, DAL, and SD ahead so it’s not going to happen)

13. TITANS: Am I the only person who saw through this fraud or just the first?

14. BRONCOS:

Kick the ball out-of-bounds!

15. SAINTS: I present to you the only team harder to figure out than AZ

16. CARDINALS: Play-calling, clock-management, missed chip shots, 4 turnovers, 10 penalties, allowing an 8-game losing streak to end, and giving up 37 points to a team that was held without a TD for 11 quarters coming into the game (I can keep going)

17. BILLS: Time for a run with an emotional WASH and a bad MIA next

18. EAGLES: Looked better with Feeley (do you realize they’re in the 6-team mess at 5-6?)

19. REDSKINS: Sean Taylor dead at 24—what would life be like if everyone lived by the kindergarten mantra, “if it’s not yours, don’t take it?” (Sean’s life included)

20. BEARS: Explain to me why you have a job when you say in a meeting, “We’re going to kick to Hester,”?

21. CHIEFS: You call TO and then challenge? Herm Edwards will never take a team to a SB

22. PANTHERS: Let’s see if this franchise gives up 374 yards of offense and puts up a -4 turnover ratio when they host SF (even more embarrassing: CAR has no wins at home, keep that in mind when they’re running over SF

23. RAVENS: Most overrated coach in NFL history

24. TEXANS:

Had a good season, too bad there’s only two wins left

25. BENGALS: No credit when you finally play up to expectations after Thanksgiving

26. VIKINGS:
I would have bet the farm MIN and SF lose—didn’t count on them both going +4 in turnovers

27. FALCONS: Barely averaging two TD’s a game

28. RAIDERS:

The curse is over, they can win in the division!

29. RAMS:

Gus! Take the ball and hand-off the ball

30. JETS: We’ve got GB/DAL and JAX/INDY this week, but the big one is in Florida (see no. 32)

31. 49ERS: Is there a rule against giving the ball to Frank Gore every play?

32. DOLPHINS: NYJ @ home might be their only chance—do you believe in miracles? No!

Live from ASU’s campus

The BCS continues to be a mess. Could Wolf’s Mountaineers actually make the BCS championship game? ASU could play in the Fiesta Bowl.

Guests:

ESPN college football and NFL draft expert Mel Kiper, Jr.: Mel thinks that West Virginia and Missouri will play in the BCS Championship game. He likes Tim Tebow to win the Heisman.

* Suns play one of two back-to-back games against the Kings. Is there anything to worry about? Tough win on the road.

* We talked about Nick Saban’s comments yesterday, but today we actually heard his comments on comparing a football loss to 9-11 and Pearl Harbor. Doug & Wolf agree that it was in very poor taste. Hibatchi!

* The guys previewed the ASU-USC game. Doug likes USC and Wolf is going with the Devils.

* Doug and Wolf Power Poll: The biggest disagreement was where the Colts belong.

The Grid Iron Griddle:
