One of the great benefits of my job is being considered a celebrity even though you and I both know, I’m not.
There are quite a few charity events here in the Valley. Some of these events ask me to come out since I’m on the radio. I love doing these events for charity. If I can donate time and make an evening more enjoyable for people that spent money on a charity, I’ll do it any time I can.
I went to Mark Grace’s Super Bowl on Saturday night. There was plenty of food and a lot of good guys who participated. It was a wonderful event. Mark kept telling me how happy he was that I was there and that’s just plain cool. I consider myself the same as you. I’m just a sports fan who loves to meet these guys and talk baseball. I got that chance on Saturday and it was great.
I was lucky enough to be placed on a team of D-Backs employees. They were a lot of fun and all of them listen to Doug & Wolf. I had a great time with my team. I’m also a bad bowler. I consistently bowl over 100 but I’ve only gone over 135 twice in my life. It was a great team to be on because all of them but one was better than me so I wasn’t the worst, but there were enough good ones to carry me.
One of the things that I observed from a baseball stand point was how long Bruce Bochy and Aaron Rowand talked. He just signed this offseason with the Giants so you would think they’ve got plenty of time together but they talked for about 20 minutes before the bowling started. Rowland was a laid back guy and more than willing to spend some time with anyone.
I really enjoyed meeting Brett Butler. I always respect guys who play the game with passion and fire on the field, but have a life and understand reality off the field. Butler was that way. He also had to be one of the best celebrity bowlers. Every time I looked over at his lane he was receiving high 5’s so he’s either very good or had a very understanding team around him.
I got to talk to Rick Sutcliffe again, too. He’s a guy everyone should get to talk baseball with once in their life. He’s from Kansas City so I’ve met him a couple times but it’s always great to see him.
Your financial status is clearly none of my business. If there’s anyway you can spend the money to come to one of these events, however, please do. This event was $1,400 for a team of four. I completely get it if that’s just too steep, even when divided by four people. At Mark’s event, that price even included dinner from Ruth’s Chris and Macayo’s plus some drink tickets.
As you might have guessed, I go to these events free because they ask me to come. I feel it’s important for our station to have a presence at these events and I really enjoy meeting people that make up our listeners and potential listeners. The great thing is I’m a fan of a lot of these guys so I would pay to go if I could afford it. I love these events and I love getting to know the greats of the game and getting pictures taken with these guys to hang up at the house.
If there’s ever a time that we’re having one of our charity auctions on air, jump at the chance if you can. Whether you can afford it on your own or you have to split it with someone else, do it. You have a great opportunity living in Phoenix to attend these events on a much more regular basis than people in other cities because so many athletes live here or don’t mind coming here.
Thanks for listening to Doug & Wolf so someone thinks anyone wants to meet me and I get lucky enough to go. I’ve always felt bad for the people that pay to come to these events in the hope of meeting a big name celebrity and they get stuck with me at their table, lane, or group. Of course, sitting with me isn’t all bad because we can go together getting pictures taken with all the real celebrities.
