Doug is Marc Anthony

Friends, Phoenicians, countrymen, lend me your ears;

I come to bury D’Antoni, not to praise him;

The poor coaching that men do lives after them,

The good is oft interred with their bones,

So let it be with D’Antoni … The noble

Hath told you D’Antoni was not stubborn:

If it were so, Boris, shan’t have plays called for henceforth,

Or in the fourth,

And grievously hath D’Antoni called them …

Here, under leave of Boris, Raja, Barbosa and the rest,

(For they are honorable men;

So are all D’Antoni’s guys; all honorable men)

Come I to speak at D’Antoni’s funeral …

He had his time as our coach, faithful and just to us:

But the noble say he was genius;

And the nobles are honorable men….

He hath brought zero trips to the finals home to Phoenix,

Our regular season ransoms did the general coffers fill:

Did this in D’Antoni seem successful?

When that the Spurs have coached, D’Antoni hath choked:

Coaching should be made of sterner stuff:

Yet the noble say he was above us;

And the noble are honorable men.

You all did see the Bell on the Parker, the Finley and the Ginobili?

I, for thrice months, presented him a Strawberry,

Which for thrice months he did refuse: was this stubborn?

Yet Boris says, “I am open”;

And, sure, he is a strong fourth quarter threat than a Nash, a STAT, or a Shaq and Boris is an honorable man.

I speak not to disprove what D’Antoni does,

But here I am to speak what I do know.

You all did love him once, not without cause:

But for what cause withholds you now to accept his failure?

O Scoreboard! Thou art fled to brutish Spurs,

And the Suns have lost their reason…. Bear with me;

My heart is in the coffin there with D’Antoni,

And I must pause till a new coach comes to us.

Doug: The Mailbag

I return almost all my e-mails. It’s impossible to fully appreciate the scope of opinions that are out there unless you read some of the e-mails with me. Some people disagree with me in a very intelligent manner and it forces me to rethink my opinions or come up with different reasons to back up my opinions. There are others who might agree with me, but they do so in such an ignorant manner, I re-evaluate my opinion anyway.

Then there are the real winners who say nothing and all they can do is insult. It’s sad but I print those e-mails just so we can all learn how important parenting is.

Here’s the mailbag after the Suns lost 117-115 in 2OT’s to the Spurs:

Refresh me Suns Hater - when did you apologize to the people of Phoenix for your Stern mistake last year? I heard you actually predicting the Suns will beat San Antonio. Are you 12 years old? People do not like you as a DJ or your opinions because you are soft and you try to make bold statements. You must have played soccer when you were a kid. Stern was wrong - he proved it by being a hypocrite (clearly Duncan left the bench) and you like the puppy dog you are followed behind him. Little boys that don’t admit their mistakes never grow up to be strong respectful young men. Get with the program or mommy and daddy will ship you off to Military school. Now let the real grown-ups get back to work.

Dennis

Wow! You hate me for an opinion I never gave. My opinion on the suspensions is the rule is idiotic but they’ve enforced that rule blindly before so I completely agree with the suspensions of Boris and Amare. However, I said Duncan should have been suspended too.

Now, the soccer thing is interesting. If you’re a Suns fan, wouldn’t you like Steve Nash? He plays soccer at an extremely high level and even credits the sport with having a lot to do with his toughness. So people hate me because I’m weak and you know I’m weak because I played soccer but people like Steve Nash because he’s tough…because he played soccer.

Doug:

I think I heard you say the Suns lost when time on the clock was 4:44 left in the second period when the Spurs called a time out. OUTSTANDING OBSERVATION, the Suns looked like they had won, what the Suns needed to do was continue to push!!

Thanks for the show, what a great way to wake up in the morning and have your show to listen to on the way to work!!!

Norm

It’s really nice of you to make our show part of your morning. The Suns get complacent and think they win something just by existing. I was looking for issues when I saw the way they celebrated when SA called TO. Here are the stats that made me feel the end of the first half was so crucial.

1) 13-5 run

2) 1-4 shooting

3) Gave up 2 offensive rebounds

4) 3 turnovers

5) Committed 3 fouls

6) Didn’t show the toughness that is exuded by Dennis since he didn’t play soccer

Doug:

12 minutes for Giricek is unacceptable in a double overtime game with Bell playing 54 minutes. Raja Bell is not worth 54 minutes. Blaine

That hurts to read. Haven’t I been saying since January that Raja just doesn’t have it and D’Antoni should see if DJ could help out defensively? I guess Manu is just the greatest offensive player in the game and I’m asking too much of Raja.

Dear Doug the Disposable Douche Bag,

I can’t stand hearing you %$#& and moan about how the whole world and 75% of the Milky Way is out to screw the Suns. How a first rate, world class little pantywaist whiner like you can call ANYBODY a big whiner like you called Tim Duncan is THE classic example of the pot calling the kettle black. It’s a good thing TD wilts under the pressure of playing Shaq or he might have broke Wilt’s 100 pts in a game record.

Randy

In my opinion, David Stern should be fired. Is that whining? I think NBA officials are the worst in sports. Is that whining? Here’s Stern’s resume in the last 12 months: can’t keep a franchise in Seattle, promotes Tim Donaghy to the second round of the playoffs, allows interpretation of an “officials in casinos rule” and the “vicinity of the bench rule” for refs and Duncan, hands a suspension for leaving the bench to Amare.

Those are opinions based on facts. Therefore, it’s not whining. Your e-mail is a weak point based on insults. I said Shaq was in Duncan’s head and I didn’t think Duncan would get off on the Suns. Obviously I was wrong but not for the reason you’re quoting. The game of basketball might be a little over your head but if you’re on the bench, you’re not guarding anyone. So how was I wrong that Duncan doesn’t shoot well against Shaq when Shaq played so little?

BTW, did you play soccer?

Hey fellas,Love your show. Have called in a time or two…

I thought you might be interested to know that I didn’t want to miss this morning’s show but I’m out-of-town so I called my Dad (lives in Chandler) and had him put his phone by the radio. I then put my phone on speakerphone for the 30 min or so it took me to prepare for the day ahead.

I just like how you can criticize Coach without sounding like a whiner and without loosing the spirit of being passionate about the suns winning. You guys are intelligent enough when it comes to “intelligent radio,” but the thing I like the most about your show is how much more fun-loving it seems than other shows.

Marc

I have learned over the years to never take e-mails too seriously because if you allow yourself to feel good about one e-mail, you’ll get torn up when the next one rips you.

I can’t help myself but to be thrilled by this e-mail because you completely understand me. Just because I passionately want D’Antoni to do something differently, doesn’t mean I think I’m a better coach.

Very few disagree with me on point and yet understand I want the Suns to win. It’s also sad how I’m labeled as a hater because I want the Suns to do something different. It’s the classic, don’t rip my team even if what you say might be right.

Thanks for listening.

Wolf: With This Shield Or On It!

In regard to the Suns success in the post-season, cold and timid souls can rationalize the acquisition of Shaquille O’Neal and take a cowardly “wait-and-see” attitude before declaring Steve Kerr and Mike D’Antoni did the right thing, but you, sir, are a critic and not a “doer of deeds.”

With Shaq, the Suns are better prepared to experience success in the playoffs than they were with Shawn Marion.

If you disagree, stop reading but know this: your argument will appear in the next Non-Sequitur.

If you agree, let us continue.

The only guarantee in life is that you will not be here one day. But unlike life, there are no guarantees in athletic competition. A man can strive, “valiantly,” but he knows failure lurks and hides in reality’s clutch and in the shadows of his own thoughts and doubts.

In head-to-head competition, all men can do to increase their odds of success is to do whatever they can to get better, individually and as a team. This is all one can ask of a human.

But just because you get better – individually and collectively – it does not guarantee success. If it did, there would be no Las Vegas. There are no guarantees.

Whether or not the Suns succeed in the “second-season” of the NBA playoffs, Steve Kerr and Mike D’Antoni girded their loins and did the hard thing: they dared to get better and I salute them.

These men were roundly blasted by the national media for trading Shawn Marion for Shaquille O’Neal. The arguments, one way or the other, are old and tired but what they did wasn’t. What they did was courageous, audacious, bold, even Spartan. They cared little for the critic’s voice and what they would say. They did while others chirped.

And they were right. Shaq has made the Suns a better playoff team. The Suns have increased their odds of success in the post-season because of the Marion/Shaq trade.

And don’t talk to me about the salary-cap implications and paying Shaq $20-million over the next 2-seasons. Professional sports teams play to win championships – hopefully – not manage their cap space. Would you trade an NBA Championship for a well balanced, well contrived salary cap?

Of course you would. It is intellectually disingenuous to suggest otherwise.

You cannot have it both ways and still be counted a Spartan or a rational human being. Either Shaq gives the Suns a better chance at winning an NBA title or the salary-cap is more important than a ring.

The Suns cannot guarantee a championship in the world of athletic competition. Things happen and players aren’t programmed like computers. All they can do is try to improve their chances of winning an NBA title. Shaq has done this.

If the Suns don’t win a title, the “I told you so” crowd will pound their chest and call Kerr and D’Antoni “stupid” for making the Shaq trade. And in this bottom-line world they’ll be right, but they won’t be honorable.

Bring on the Spurs!!!

Here’s what happened Thursday on Doug and Wolf:

* We got what we all really wanted, Suns and Spurs.

* Both guys have the Suns winning the series

* Brandon Webb is pitching out of his mind. Is he the best pitcher in baseball?

*Wolf is still at work. We get the latest on the Wolfley pregnancy with “Baby Watch”.

Grid Iron Griddle:

What is Darnell Dockett thinking? Doug can’t even defend Dockett for wanting to renegotiate after only one season of his new deal.

Guests:

Derrick Hall, Dbacks President: Derrick said that he was fired up about the Suns and loved the fact that people can watch the Suns at noon and go to the Dbacks game on Saturday.

Greg Schulte, Voice of the Dbacks: Greg said that this is the best start Webb has had in the majors.

Al McCoy, Suns Hall of Fame Broadcaster: Al is fired up about the Spurs like the rest of The Valley is.

Wolf: The Suns outside force

The Suns have shown a deep and abiding penchant for mental lapses throughout this season. They seem to have a hard time dealing with prosperity. When they get up and on top of their prey, they are most vulnerable.

Mental toughness, or the lack thereof, may prove to be the undoing of Planet Orange but their malaise may have a cure: the playoffs.

The playoffs represent a change of context and this change of context carries a tangible force. The “second-season’s” undeniable force is pressure and pressure has the ability to destroy or repair brain cells.

This change of context has the power to focus the Suns, alter their concentration and heal their regular season woes. Then again, the power comes from within the hearts and minds of the players that take the floor.

Let’s hope Nash, Shaq, Stat, Raja, Hill and company feel the pressure, respond to it well, and let the Great Divider work its cognitive magic.

Remember: A body in motion stays in motion unless acted upon by an outside force.

The Suns Opponent in the First Round is….

Here’s what happened Wednesday on Doug and Wolf:

* Who are the Suns playing in the first round? We’ll find out tonight

* Will the Suns have the mental toughness in the playoffs?

Grid Iron Griddle:

Wolf will be spending Thanksgiving in Philly. Paul Calvisi will be spending the same day dodging “D” batteries. The Cardinals are playing on Turkey Day. Wolf and Paul are ecstatic.

Guests:

Thunder Dan Majerle, Suns Analyst: Dan wants the Suns to avoid the New Orleans Hornets as long as possible in the playoffs.

Greg Schulte, Voice of the Dbacks: Greg gave us some insight on Micah Owings’ success this season.
