* The guys talked about Manny’s monster games as of late. He is batting over .400 with the Dodgers. Doug Davis gave up four runs in five innings, but Doug Franz doesn’t think it’s too bad. He is the fourth guy in rotation and it didn’t cost them the game. Wolf is not worried either. He has his three game bad streak out of the way so now he should have three straight games where he is virtually the lefty version of Dan Haren. Speaking of Haren, he has given up 10 runs in his last 11 innings which has coincided with his contract extension. Eric Byrnes anyone?
* There were a few scuffles at Cards Camp yesterday. Coach Whiz had to come in at one point and settle a “dispute”. Wolf thought that the punches were beautiful and loves to see his team fight. It’s a hyper aggressive sport so seeing the players get hyper aggressive is a nice sight to be seen for Wolfley.
* Team USA took it to the Grecians in basketball this morning. Greece lost by more than 20 points but somehow shot 65 percent from the field in the defeat. Great shooters who can play great defense? Hmm, someone should pinch Mike D’Antoni. Oh and by the way Mike, Bosh got 18 points off the bench. Although we do understand that Giricek is not quite Bosh.
Grid Iron Griddle:
Kurt Warner, Cardinals QB:Kurt joined us on the Grid Iron Griddle. Kurt says he feels great and strong and riding around on the Segway has helped his legs. He has been playing basketball and focusing on his feet recently so he isn’t immobile in his age. Kurt plans on playing a few series in the upcoming game against the Chiefs. Warner believes that both him and Matt deserve to be starters in this league…problem is they are both on the same team. Kurt sees himself playing three more years but isn’t set on anything.
Guests:
Kurt Warner Part 2, Cardinals QB: Kurt came back on after the griddle. He is running a fundraiser for the flood victims in the Midwest. Over 92,000 people have been displaced in the heartland. He is working hard to get money together to rebuild homes and lives. If you can donate please go to http://www.kurtwarner.org All Kurt is asking for is a $10 donation.
Derrick Hall, D-backs President: Derrick thought the game last night was great despite the loss. Derrick could not get into details about the instant replay but he believes it will be in the game by the end of the season. It will mostly affect home run calls and not slow down the pace of the game. He has really liked what he has seen out of Dunn and he will make everybody better. He is not counting out the idea of making another move but feels confident with the current line-up.
Greg Schulte, Voice of the D-backs: Greg is getting into the Olympics and woke up to watch the US vs. Greece game. Schulte said it was an exciting game and loved the development of the ninth inning. Greg was curious how Davis could walk the first batter on four pitches. He also thought the pitch zone last night was…liberal. He also predicted Dunn would get his first D-backs HR tonight.
Crunk List:
Chad Johnson came out and said that Michael Phelps is not the best swimmer in the world. Who is? Well Ocho Cinco of course. He claims that the best swimmers in the world are from his home town but they just never got the opportunities that Phelps did. Chad of course is one of those guys who never got the opportunities?…sure, whatever Mr. Johnson.

Greg Schulte, Voice of the Dbacks [6:32m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | DownloadHere’s what happened Wednesday on Doug and Wolf:
* It has come out that one of the “players to be named” in the Adam Dunn trade is Micah Owings. Doug and Wolf are a little disappointed with this news. They feel Micah has a lot potential and will be a much better player in the future. Wolf still likes the trade but knows that we have not seen the last of Owings. Doug thinks the D-backs organization believes they were an offensive player away from a 2008 championship which is why they were willing to make the move.
* If Michael Phelps were his own country, he would be in second in Gold Medals. China has him beat and if he were separate from the US, he would have a lead by one. Wolf is stunned by Phelps calling him an unbelievable freak of nature. Doug was shocked that Phelps was disappointed by his last race. He broke a world record but wanted to do it even faster. If it weren’t for Michael, Wolf would not watch swimming in the Olympics.
Grid Iron Griddle:
Wolf got heated up about video games. He said he would “go off” on players if he knew they were playing football video games during the season. The fact that players blow assignments in the National Football League because they are spending their free time getting out of shape, playing Madden, and chasing skirt is appalling.
Guests:
Ivan Maisel, ESPN.com CFB Insider: Ivan talked about Georgia’s team and their problems on the offensive line. Their recent issues have caused some concerns. He still likes Georgia and picks them. Even with Mark Sanchez’s injury, Ivan is still convinced that USC will take the PAC-10. He also said that USC and UCLA is the most overrated rivalry in sports.
Greg Schulte, Voice of D-backs: Greg thought that the big story from yesterday’s game was RJ’s 10th win. He did very well in a tough ball park and kept the Rockies hitters quiet. He gives the D-backs larger depth and makes them a team to deal with. With eight more starts left for Randy, he still has a shot at 300 wins. He said Dunn’s game was very Dunn like. All of his at bats except one went to a 3-2 count and Greg is impressed with his eye at the plate.
Crunk List:
Several Cards players ran out of practice yesterday to pick up their new copy of Madden ’09. Yes, the one with Brett Favre on the cover in Packers gear. Wolf thinks this gets in the way and guys need to focus on what their opponents think of them, not what sports geeks rate them.

Doug and Wolf broadcasting LIVE from Flagstaff at Cardinals Training Camp.

It’s a Dunn deal and it’s a good deal.
People are coming out of the woodwork against the Adam Dunn trade and I just don’t get it. This is a good trade. The D-backs traded a player who’s coming off of Tommy John surgery and two people not named Parker and Scherzer for a power bat. On top of that, when Dunn leaves as a free agent, the D-backs get two first round picks.
If the worst thing you can say about this trade is, “He’s bad on defense,” then it’s a good trade. Sure there’s some issues when Upton comes back, but what about this issue: when Upton comes back, the Dodgers have a 5 game lead? It’s wrong to pretend any of us know what stage the D-backs will be in when Upton’s back. What we do know is the D-backs are horrendous on offense and OK on defense. They now go to decent on offense and average on defense. Are the D-backs better equipped to win the NL West now than they were two days ago? I say yes!

Speaking of Upton, after his torrid start, he’s been very poor. I was getting all these e-mails that he needs to be sent down before he was injured. Now that the D-backs have traded for a RF, suddenly Upton’s going to the HOF and has done everything perfect all year. Let’s keep Upton in Tucson until he demonstrates that he belongs back up.
Of course you should anticipate problems and decisions before they happen, but that doesn’t mean you have to fret over them ahead of time. If you’re turning left in five blocks, why drive in the turn lane with your signal on the whole time? Put Dunn in LF and then make a decision what to do with Dunn and Upton when you need to.
Here’s what happened Monday on Doug and Wolf:
* Adam Dunn is now a D-back, meaning that Arizona now has three of the top five leaders in strikeouts. Wolf thinks Dunn fills a huge need for the Sedona Red and gives this team a shot to knock anybody off. Doug does not think the strikeouts of Dunn and Reynolds is a problem. Their power back to back can work pitchers mentally and force them to go to the bullpen early. Doug is fine with Dunn in right field because CY can bail him out.
* Wolf talked about the afternoon Cards practice yesterday and said they really got after it following a weak morning. Doug did not see as much Ben Patrick as he is used to and wants the tight end to be a constant presence.
* Aaron Rodgers threw a TD and a pick in his debut with the Packers. Wolf thought the performance was outstanding. Doug didn’t think it was anything special just looking at it from a football standpoint, but all the pressure of the night boosts the performance. Doug says that if he doesn’t improve upon this game, the Packers will win four games. Wolf is sold on nine.
Grid Iron Griddle:
Linebackers Coach Bill Davis talked with Doug the other day and he asked Doug what he thought about the team. Doug was, needless to say, ecstatic to say that they are much better this year, but the schedule is so tough, it won’t show.
Guests:
Pat Kirwan, NFL.com: Pat believes the Cards are significantly better this year and is happy Whiz found a great gig. He likes Matt Leinart and likes his maturity level. His mechanics have improved and says Matt now knows what to do after he throws the ball. Kurt Warner is frustrated he is not the starting QB and feels he can make many teams better in the league. Father time is ticking so he wants to find time as a starter soon, according to Kirwan.
Kevin Spencer, Cards Assistant Coach: Coach Spencer was impressed by Wolf’s wardrobe today (and everyday) of the crocs and camo shorts. Spencer quoted Bill Belichek by saying there is still a lot of work to do. He believes they have become a lot faster and the bottom half of their roster is much improved. Coach Kevin believes Sean Morey is a great special teams guy and even though he is a bubble wide receiver, he has a place on this team. Kevin commented on the 4×100 Olympic event saying he was surprised the French were trash talking because they still owe us money from WWII.
Keith Law, ESPN MLB Insider: Keith thinks that the Eric Byrnes contract is just a gift that keeps on giving…sigh. He is excited about the Dunn trade and what it can do for the Snakes. Keith would play Dunn in right field, but when J-Up comes back it gets a little more complicated. He also feels that CoJack needs to go back to first because he can’t keep up the run in left. Because of Dunn and the Dodgers inability to make good management decisions, (i.e. Ethier rarely playing) the D-backs are the front-runner in the NL West and have a good shot at making a run in the post season. Keith is also looking at Paul Byrd sitting on the waivers. He thinks he would be a great pickup for any NL club.
Crunk List:
Madden ’09 came out today with Brett Favre on the cover in his Green Bay uniform. EA said they did it to pay tribute to the legend. Doug thinks they did it just to save face and to save money.

Keith Law, ESPN MLB Insider [9:10m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | DownloadHere’s what happened Monday on Doug and Wolf:
* Orlando Hudson is out for the season with a hand injury. Doug and Wolf believe this should be the end of the world but… it’s not. Last season proved to us that Augie Ojeda can show up and perform when called upon. Also, if Reynolds and Young can come back next year improving like CoJack did this year, then ’09 is going to be one heck of a team. Carlos Quintin’s success with the Sox is finally getting to Wolf.
* Wolf agreed that the 4×100 Freestyle was the most incredible comeback imaginable. Doug was shocked that even the Bronze medalist broke a world record. The French team guaranteed they would smash America. Surprise, surprise, the French were wrong.
* Aaron Rodgers’ home debut will take place Monday night and the eyes of the nation are on him. Wolf thinks he has far more to lose than he could ever gain in this game. The downside is tremendous so it’s important to pull him as soon as he has just a bit of success.
In the Red Zone with Coach Ken Whisenhunt:
Ken Whisenhunt, Cardinals Head Coach: Coach Whiz is happy with Leinart, saying he plays like he practices. Matt’s injury last season has set him up for success for this season because he of his new found ability to break down a defensive scheme. Coach W expects to see improvement on the defensive side of the ball. The Whiz agrees with Wolf about Aaron Rodgers. Pull him as soon as you can if there is even minor success.
Guests:
Greg Schulte, Voice of the Dbacks: Greg talked about Webb’s stellar performance last night and what we can expect in this next series. Greg points to the youth as being the offensive problem. He thinks this next road trip might lift them up.
Crunk List:
Michael Phelps’ first medal ceremony of ’08 ended … suspiciously. The National Anthem ended early and also the beginning was butchered. President George W was in attendance. Wolf calls foul play. Listen here to the sound of the Anthem
