What a long but great day.
5 o’clock in the morning and we’ve got 30 college students all standing around looking at us. They seem to be in a little shock that this is actually happening.
A couple of them made us feel old by telling us just how much their dad loves our show. There were about 5 kids from the SAE house that told us that they’re big listeners when they’re home in Phoenix. One kid asked me if that was Wolf’s real voice.
I think Doug & Wolf Old School is a great idea and it’s just going to get better throughout the week. As long as Wolf doesn’t ask for the server to crash again–it did. We had double the number of viewers for D&W OT than we normally do so Wolf got his wish.
While they were dealing with the issue, I beat Jordan in corn hole. She’s from our promotions department but we’ve become quick friends. She’s from my high school’s rival. Of course I graduated when she was 5 so it’s a friendship that she reminds me has some limitations on “crunkness.”
After my nap H-Lo (tech), Jordan and Nikki (promotions), Tyler (web-boy), Yoda and I went to dinner and had pizza (when I went to school we had to put a comma before the and, why did that go way?). After dinner, the girls had work to do so the four of us went to our first game at the McKale Center.
I couldn’t believe what I saw. It was a shock to me. I couldn’t believe how small it was. It’s nice. I’m not ripping the arena. It seemed very clean and was very well lit so I liked the surroundings but it came as a shock to me how empty and small it was. Since my only real knowledge of the gym comes from national television and the fans looked so enthusiastic, I just thought the gym was always big and full.
I’m from Dayton, Ohio. I don’t want to make it out to be the mecca of basketball but if you’re a hard-core CBB fan, you know the school well. The University of Dayton Arena holds over 13,000 and holds NCAA tourney games about once every two or three years. It holds the play-in game every year. UD Arena comes close to selling out for every conference game and always sells out for big games. The usual crowd is in the 5 figures.
To me, this just shows you two things: Lute Olson and Pac-10 basketball. A school like Dayton is in a bigger city with more fans, more ticket sales but it’s in the A-10 and has no national presence. It’s just another example of what Lute Olsen was able to do.
If you made a list of the top 5 people in sports that are under the most pressure, I think you could put Jim Livengood on that list.
See you on Wednesday.
