The semi-finals are here!

The playoff had its first upset of the tournament when USC traveled to Alabama and took care of business (according to you, and was that really an upset? I guess only in the standings). We are now down to four and arguably everyone’s top four teams in the country this season. No home field advantage this round as the games take place at neutral sites, the other BCS games. First we will have Oklahoma taking on USC in New Orleans at the Sugar Bowl. The other semi-final will see Texas battling Florida in the Rose Bowl. The winners will then play in the Fiesta Bowl for the DFCFB Playoff Champion. Here is a look at how the Round 2 matchups ended and if you would like to see what the bracket looked like in Round 1 you can see it here. Next week leading up to the actual BCS Championship game we will have the DFCFB Championship game and see where we end up. Personally, the last three weeks of these games below have been better than 30 plus days of not watching these four teams.

Oklahoma over Penn State 239-27 (90%-10%)

Florida over Texas Tech 211-40 (84%-16%)

Texas over Utah 225-29 (89%-11%)

USC over Alabama 202-53 (79%-21%)

5) USC                 @           1) Oklahoma

Cheery Cards

Here’s what happened Tuesday on Doug and Wolf:

Paul Calvisi and Tony Femino filled in for the guys…

All Cards on the table
After another dismal performance against a quality opponent, Cards HC Ken Whisenhunt isn’t taking any chances or giving anymore second ones. Whiz says everyone will be held accountable, and that a few starters could be benched if their play does not improve. Paul says G Deuce Lutui and a couple defensive lineman should be worried. Tony isn’t too worried about this week against the Seahawks, and thinks this may just be a clever cover for Whiz to rest some of his guys before the playoffs begin next weekend.

FEST
Yesterday it was FFT (Femino’s Flagstaff Theory), today it was FEST- Femino’s Economic Stimulus Theory. Yes, with the economy in such sad shape, and discounts and almost every retail outlet readily available, Tony doesn’t understand why sports is exempt from giving the fans a financial reprieve. Paul understand why: Because sports fans will keep paying! Case and point: this weekend at University of Phoenix Stadium will mark the Cards 30th sellout in 30 tries.

Poinsettia Bowl
Tonight’s Poinsettia Bowl might be the best the college post-season has to offer. Paul won’t be watching, however; Not until the college post-season produces a true national champion. Tony feels that teams like Boise State could bring about that change, and that BCS busters like Boise and Utah need more support (and wins) to bring a playoff system to the college ranks.

Guests:

Steve Kerr, Suns GM
Kerr believes the Suns are starting to see results from the Jason Richardson trade, and that he is already seeing some results on the practice court which was lacking energy a few weeks back.

Herb Sendek, ASU basketball coach
ASU Basketball HC- Sendek talked out Saturday’s thrilling win over BYU, and briefly previewed Tuesday’s afternoon matchup against Idaho State.

Cards snowball effect

Here’s what happened Monday on Doug and Wolf:

Paul Calvisi and Tony Femino filled in for the guys

Cards snowball effect- Another early deficit leads to another blowout loss on the East coast. The Arizona Cardinals were embarrassed by the New England Patriots yesterday 47-7. In 5 Eastern trips thus far this season, the Cardinals have been outscored by a combined 100 points.  Tony wonders why Flagstaff wasn’t used as a practice site in preparing for winter conditions, and Cal wonders if it might not be a case of “senioritis”- i.e. the Cards taking it easy before the playoffs.

Stoops before hoops? -UA AD Jim Livengood’s new favorite seems to be Mike Stoops.  This after Stoops supposed flirtation with the Iowa State job, and the Wildcats nice win in the Las Vegas Bowl on Saturday.  Tony feels the leverage game worked out perfectly for Stoops and not so much for Arizona fans, who probably don’t feel 8-5 is a crowing achievement during a down year in the Pac 10.  Or maybe they do…

Out of control
- Five teams that could have controlled their own playoff destinies squandered their opportunities’ yesterday. The Philadelphia Eagles fall in Washington 10-3. The New York Jets lose to the Seahawks in Seattle, 13-3. The Denver Broncos fail to clinch the AFC West after losing at home to Buffalo. The Minnesota Vikings fail to clinch the NFC North with a home loss to the playoff bound Atlanta Falcons. The Tampa Bay Bucs-controlled their own playoff destiny with two home games left against the Chargers and Raiders. Now, after yesterday’s loss to the Chargers, the Bucs need to beat the Raiders next week, and have the Cowboys lose at Philly.  After a close vote, Paul and Tony agree the biggest choke-job of the weekend belongs to the Broncos.

Guests:

Ken Whisenhunt, Cards head coach- Whiz somewhat endorsed Femino’s plan of moving the team to Flagstaff to practice for winter conditions.  Whiz also called the Cards embarrassing loss in Foxboro a “wake up call,” and that his team is “embarrassed and disappointed” about the way they played.

Doug Franz College Football Playoff - Round 2

The first round has ended and it went upset free. I think that alone is a shock.

The Doug Franz College Football Playoff names 16 teams to a playoff with 8 teams earning a bid by winning their conference championship from one of the top 8 conferences. The other 8 teams earn an at-large bid by being one of the top 8 highest rated teams in the BCS that don’t win their conference championship. Here are the results of the first round:

Oklahoma over Virginia Tech 318-3 (99%-1%)

Florida over Georgia 302-12 (96%-4%)

Texas over Georgia Tech 285-23 (93%-7%)

Alabama over Oklahoma State 227-80 (74%-26%)

USC over Cincinnati 302-6 (98%-2%)

Utah over TCU 167-140 (54%-46%)

Texas Tech over Ohio State 258-50 (84%-16%)

Penn State over Boise State 163-147 (53%-47%)

I took TCU and Boise State winning on the road but I was out-voted. Now, the second round is still at the home of the higher seed. I don’t re-seed the play-off. The reason is simple, the bracket. The NCAA basketball tourney is a success because of the bracket and the office pool. The Doug Franz College Football Playoff is banking on the bracket to bring the playoff the same attention.

The round two games are on.

I’m only taking one upset in the second round. I think Alabama is better than most people do. I don’t think Alabama is as good as Alabama fans think they are. I know Alabama isn’t better than USC. I don’t care where the game is, USC would beat ‘Bama.

I’m totally interested in the Texas Tech game at Florida. I think UF wins, but imagine the offenses in that contest. A Heisman trophy winner and two almost’s all in one game. Meyer and Leach’s offensive minds going at it. That’s the offensive game of the century.

The other games interest me only in the “maybe, just maybe” category. I mean maybe when it comes to the upset possibility even though I don’t think it will happen.

Now it’s your turn to pick. We’ll leave the voting up until right after Christmas. Make sure you check back to the Doug Franz College Football Playoff after Christmas for the National Semi-finals.
