Tampa Day 2: We do this together

Congrats to the Cards marketing department for the slogan they use to include you into the fabric of the Cardinals.  Winning, creates great marketing opportunities.

When I first heard, “We do this together,” I understood the goal.  It was important for you to bring the noise and create the same home field advantage other teams have.

I also thought it could be seen as high on the cheese factor.  If the team doesn’t succeed, it sounds pretty silly to try to include you in the losing.

I’m now sitting here on radio row after Tuesday’s show and I’m thinking of the same slogan.  I understand very few of you have the time, disposable income, or vacation days to come to Tampa for the Super Bowl.  I hope I can steal the Cards slogan for our show.  Whether you’re watching us on Webby…driven my Sanderson Ford Lincoln Mercury (I knew I’d get points if I included that but streaming is expensive so they’ve earned the plug) or listening to the show, it’s important to me that you feel like we’re doing this together.

You helped build Doug & Wolf into one of the most popular morning shows in Phoenix, not just sports shows, one of the most popular morning shows overall.  You helped due to crowd noise and support to get the Cardinals here.  You deserve to have your show, your station, and your team in Tampa for Super Bowl 43.

We will capture the magic of this week with our coverage of Tampa.  Sports 620 KTAR has sent 10 people to cover Super Bowl 43.  No TV station, no newspaper, no other radio station is devoting so much of their resources to this event.  Although this is clearly the Cardinals Super Bowl, the coverage of the event is our Super Bowl and we will succeed.

True Realization

In case you haven’t done the math, the Doug & Wolf show is on from 7a-11a.

Obviously that makes no sense until I tell you that we start at 7a Eastern Standard Time.  Most morning shows start at 5 in the morning with some starting at 6a.  It’s always different on radio row because you have different people starting all the time.  You also have some people recording interviews when they’re not on air.

Since we didn’t start until 7 here in Tampa, I walked around and took a look at some of the radio stations around the country and listened to some of their shows.  It’s easy to figure out what they’re talking about.

Every station in the country is talking about the Arizona Cardinals.  It was surreal to walk around the Tampa Convention Center and hear all of these opinions about the Cardinals.  The opinions themselves ran the whole gamut from “don’t deserve to be here” to “I told you they’d surprise.”  My point isn’t their opinions.  It’s that other people outside of Phoenix are even talking about their opinions.

We’re a Super Bowl town!  Not a town that has the SB (TB) but a town playing in the SB.

When you watch SportsCenter or listen to “The Herd” and you’re hearing other people talk about the Cardinals, it’s fine to remember what they say.  File it away if someone bugs you.  Listen to who’s picking the Cards to win.

Most importantly, just soak it in.  Everyone in the nation is talking about your team…and it feels so good.

Next Stop… Tampa, FL

Here’s what happened Monday on Doug and Wolf:

* The Cardinals head to Tampa to prepare for Super Bowl XLIII. Wolf was at the team’s rally to help send them off.

* Suns GM Steve Kerr and Owner Robert Sarver made an unscheduled visit in Atlanta Saturday to offer the team encouragement. Will this talk help the Suns?

* Wolf could not be more giddy about the Cardinals’ going to the Super Bowl.

Grid Iron Griddle:

Hall of Fame Defensive End Jack Youngblood was LIVE in Tampa to give his thoughts on the Super Bowl.

Guests:

Kevin Spencer, Cardinals Special Teams Coach: Contrary to reports, Coach Spencer said Steelers’ QB Ben Roethlisberger and Coach Whisenhunt have a good relationship and still talk via text messages.

Jack Youngblood, NFL Hall of Famer: Jack reminisced on his playing days, including Super Bowl XIV, in which he played with a fractured fibula.

Al McCoy, Legendary Voice of the Suns:Al gave his insight on the Suns’ win over the Hawks last night.

Wolf: The Cards have what the Suns are losing

Two seasons ago the Phoenix Suns were the most exciting, cutting edge team in the National Basketball Association, the panacea to boring, back-it-down basketball – the future of the NBA. Last season the Phoenix Suns were the most exciting, cutting edge team in the National Basketball Association that couldn’t beat San Antonio. This season the Phoenix Suns look like every other average team in the Association.

The reasons for this are varied and often complicated but Dogma may have more to do with the Suns declivitous path than anything else.

According to dictionary.com:
Dogma: 1. a system of principles or tenets, as of a church.

The Suns believed they were good. The Suns knew they were good. The Suns believed they could win an NBA title. The Suns knew they were special. The Suns believed…

Belief is critical to the success of any entity; it’s the thing that keeps you grounded, together and on the same page when that entity is a human being and things are going well. Faith is critical to the success of any entity; it’s the thing that keeps you grounded, together and on the same page when that entity is a human being and things are not going well. Belief becomes faith when the fire’s flickering tongue begins to test one’s resolve.

Confidence is a must in the world of professional sports. People that get paid to perform in front of the masses because they possess a desired skill or vocation must be confident above all else or their doom is currently perched above their chamber door.

In order to be confident a person must believe in something that defines him/her or the collection of souls they call “team;” This belief system turns to faith when falling rocks come crashing down…and they will come crashing and you will be tested. Being a confident person or team means you know who you are, you know who your teammates are, you believe in where you’re going and you believe you know how to get there.

Confidence, individually or as a team, comes by experiencing success through “a system of principles or tenets.” Eventually, by experiencing success, this becomes a player’s or a team’s dogma.

This no longer appears to apply to Planet Orange. They have lost their mojo, their dogma.

The Suns are not a confident team. Their beliefs about themselves and their team no longer compel them to summon the requisite passions to play inspired basketball, special basketball. What they once knew about themselves and took for granted has washed upon the shore like a Pilgrim with a musket.

Unless the Suns can find a new system of principles and tenets, the dream is done. And that new system of principles and tenets sounds a lot like a rebuilding project, something that has been under way since the beginning of the season.

Wolf on with Colin Cowherd

The Arizona Cardinals are going to Super Bowl XLIII and Ron Wolfley has been doing plenty of interviews over the past few weeks. Friday morning he joined Colin Cowherd. Earlier this week he and his brother Craig were on the NFL Network to preview Super Bowl XLIII.

Anquan Speaks…We Listen!

Here’s what happened Friday on Doug and Wolf:

* Anquan Boldin speaks to the media about his actions in the NFC Championship. Has the media blown it out of proportion?

* Wolf talks about his 300 on his Twitter page.  He previews his constant “Tweeting” from Tampa.

* Could Amare making the All-Star team be the worst case scenario for the Phoenix Suns?

Grid Iron Griddle:

With everyone talking about Larry Fitzgerald, is it setting up for Anquan to have a big game?

Guests:

Kevin Spencer, Cardinals Special Teams Coach: Kevin said that they are going to stop Steelers punt returner Santonio Holmes by not punting the ball the whole game.

Darren Woodson, ESPN NFL Analyst: Darren likes how the Cardinals’ defense is playing.  He likes the Cardinals to win the Super Bowl.

Paul’s Call: Paul Calvisi takes his sports seriously, without taking himself too seriously. Your daily dose of irreverence, angst, and stupification.
