Final Four … at least we got UNC.

Here’s What Happened Monday on Doug and Wolf

* The Final Four is in and it seems it’s over. D&W have lost the G&A Bracket Beatdown.

* The Suns lost last night and it appears they just don’t want to go to the playoffs. Wolf is disappointed with their collective lack of effort.

* This weekend the big story for Wolf was Blake Griffin. Wolf said he out-performed Tyler Hansbrough despite the result of the game.

Grid Iron Griddle

* The guys talked about Michael Vick. He claimed bankruptcy documents that he will make 10 million next year as a quarterback…sure Michael…we believe you.

 Guests

* Mel Kiper Jr., ESPN NFL Draft Expert: As the Draft looms closer, Mel joins the guys for a Mel Kiper Monday and he was amped. He talked about some of the guys who have really impressed him recently.

* Russ Pennell, UofA Coach: Coach talked about his uncertain future and his chances of coaching somewhere next year. He also put to rest the Pitino rumors.

* Paul’s Call: Paul Calvisi takes his sports seriously, without taking himself too seriously. Your daily dose of irreverance, angst, and stupification.

Looking for a Head Coach for your basketball team? U of A is!

Here’s what happened Friday on Doug and Wolf:

* Before last night’s game, the Suns had won 6 in a row, but lost to the Blazers last night. They play Saturday night against the Jazz at six on KTAR. Did last night’s loss kill any chances of the Suns making the playoffs?

*Ryan Moats, Houston Texans Running Back, had a gun drawn at him by a police officer, keeping him from his mother-in-law’s last minutes before dying. Wolf feels that people shouldn’t jump to conclusions assuming the officer was out to get him, when really he probably had no idea who he was pulling over for a traffic violation. Doug is having a hard time defending the officer’s actions from all that he has read and heard about.

* Rick Pitino was asked about the rumors of him being the next head coach at UA. He said, “For 8 years, I’ve given every ounce I had to University Louisville. I will continue to do that. I can poke fun and make all the jokes in the world but there’s no truth. Anybody today can go on a message board. Anybody today could put anything out there they want, truth or untruth. And all I can tell you is that I’ve lived and died with Louisville for 8 years”. The question is, who will be the next head coach for UA?

Grid Iron Griddle:
Former Philadelphia Eagle tight end, L.J. Smith, said he was treated like “a number” by the eagles. Doug and Wolf said that you should know what your getting into, and stop the crying.

Guests:

Jay Bilas, ESPN and CBS College Basketball analyst: Jay shared his thoughts on the Sweett 16 and Rick Pitino going to UA.

Al McCoy, Suns Hall of Fame Broadcaster: Al reviewed the Suns loss to the Trail Blazers last night.

Paul’s Call: Paul Calvisi takes his sports seriously, without taking himself too seriously. Your daily dose of irreverence, angst, and stupification.

There is no I in T.E.A.M

Here’s what happened Thursday on Doug and Wolf:

* The Suns extended their winning streak to six after beating the Jazz last night 118-114. Doug is hopeful that they will make the playoffs and is impressed with the team’s new style of play especially Grant Hill. Wolf still thinks that when the season is over the team will be blown up.

* U.S. Senators are getting off the sidelines to examine antitrust issues involving the Bowl Championship Series. Under the current BCS, some conferences get automatic bids to participate in series, while others do not. Should Congress be solving College Football’s problems or our country’s problems?
Doug and Wolf: “No congress, stay out! We can solve our own problems!”

* D&W are nervous about their brackets…They need YODA to come through or else they will be wearing hot dog suits at Chase Field while Gambo & Ash point and laugh.

Grid Irion Griddle:

The NFL draft order will be changed, from now on if you make the playoffs your draft position will only be determined among how you do with other playoff losers.

D&W: Both agree that this is a good rule. This rule will already be enforced with the Cardinals right away.

The NFL is considering adding 2 more games to their schedule, and cutting out 2 preseason games.

Wolf: “Going to 17 games is a bad thing for the athlete’s health. Is this why they have been enforcing tougher rules and punishments to make the games safer so they can then extend the season? Hmmm… Doesn’t the NFL make enough money already?”

Guests:

Kevin Spencer, Cardinals Special Teams Coach: Kevin tried to motivate Doug and Wolf about their “Sweet 16” picks. He also told us why the loss of the wedge will change special teams in the NFL.

John Clayton, ESPN NFL Insider: John called in live from the NFL Winter Meetings. He gave us his thoughts on the recent rule changes.

Al McCoy, Suns Hall of fame Broadcaster: Al reviewed the Suns big win over the Jazz last night.

Pauls Call: Paul Calvisi takes his sports seriously, without taking himself too seriously. Your daily dose of irreverence, angst, and stupification.

A new Pac-10 Commish

Wednesday on Doug and Wolf

***The guys broadcast LIVE at US Airways Center***

* The Suns play the Jazz tonight. Doug is hopeful because maybe the Jazz are tired after their last game.

* A new PAC-10 Commissioner takes over next year. The guys both said it can only get better here on out.

* The Gambo and Ash Bracket Beatdown isn’t quite a beatdown this year. Wolf (the self proclaimed bracketologist) is letting down the Doug Wolf and Yoda team.

Grid Iron Griddle:

* The guys talked about the new NFL Rules and if it is a good or bad move for the league.

Guests:

* Rick Welts, Suns President: Rick Welts joined the guys to talk about the Suns right now.

Clock is a tickin’…

Here’s what happened Monday on Doug and Wolf:

Daron Sutton, Diamondbacks Announcer was in for Ron Wolfley today

* Curt Schilling announced his retirement via his blog yesterday. Is Curt Schilling a Hall of Famer? Doug: “He has too low of a win total to be considered, even with 3,000 strikeouts.” Daron: “He is absolutely a Hall of Famer, the fact that he performed the way he did during the steroid era, he was simply one of the best pitchers of his time with a huge post season upside”

* Suns had a impressive win over the Nuggets last night beating them 118-115. Is this Cinderella story over? Doug thinks: “It is just too little too late for the Suns”

* Leandro Barbosa is listed to be out 1-3 weeks but he said recently that he will not be on the Suns last road trip. Doug: “So basically he won’t be back for at least 2 weeks”

Grid Iron Griddle:

According to ESPN.com NFL owners voted Monday to modify the schedule to ease the burden of cross-country road trips. Under the new plan east coast teams would not have to make the trip out west more than once a year. Is this east coast bias by the NFL?

Doug agrees that there might be something to it, even though he usually doesn’t agree with these types of biases.

Guests:

Mike DeCourcy, College Basketball Insider: Mike took a look at the NCAA brackets and predicted some possible upsets.

Bert Blyleven, former MLB Pitcher: Bert discussed Curt Schilling and if he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.

Herb Sendek, ASU Basketball Coach: Herb addressed ASU missing the chance of heading to the “Sweet 16” and what the future looks like for the Sun Devils next year.

Eddie Johnson, Suns Analyst: Eddie discussed the Suns being 3 games out of making the playoffs with 12 games left in the season.

Al McCoy, Suns Hall of Fame Broadcaster: Al reviewed the Suns big win over the Nuggets last night.

Paul’s Call: Paul Calvisi takes his sports seriously, without taking himself too seriously. Your daily dose of irreverence, angst, and stupification.

* UA makes the “Sweet 16” and ASU falls short.  Doug heaps praise for the Wildcats and rips James Harden.

* Can the Suns win a championship with Amare Stoudemire as their franchise player?

Grid Iron Griddle:

How will Matthew Stafford’s 38 on the Wonderlic affect the entire NFL Draft?

Guests:

Todd McShay, ESPN NFL Draft Expert: Todd said that a bad Wonderlic score hurts more than a good one helps a player.

Russ Pennell, UA Basketball Coach: Russ talked about what the teams’ mindset was going into last week’s games.

Dave Burns, Sports 620 KTAR Commissioner: The commish gave us a rundown on who’s winning the bracket beatdown after the first two rounds.

Tourney Time

The incredible games of the weekend are exactly why I love the NCAA Tournament.

Imagine if you had tickets to the games in Dayton.  I realize my hometown brings nothing to the table when it comes to great American cities–we have the Air Force Museum which is solid but I know my place.  OSU/Sienna in 2OT’s, Okla St/Tenn in overtime, E Tenn St almost becoming the first 16 seed to win and Pitt barely escaping the next game were all witnessed by the crowd in Dayton.

I say this because the tourney is in Glendale.  If you can get tickets, you’ve got to go.  The tempo of Mizzou and Memphis will be crazy.  UConn handling the length of Purdue in the first game and then the speed of the MU/UM winner is the definition of earning your way into the Final Four.

As far as the bracket beatdown goes, I’m extremely nervous and torn.  I have two choices, root for my picks to lose for the benefit of the team or be humiliated by running on the dugout while I have the best bracket.  I beat Ash if Memphis goes to the Final Four and I beat Gambo is UNC wins it all.  However, if Pitt wins it all, that benefits Wolf and gives us a ton of points.  Yoda has Mizzou and Nova in the Final Four.  So the best scenario for us would be for Pitt to win it all over Mizzou.

Now you see my dilemma.  I’m going to win the bracket beatdown and still end up on the dugout.  No matter what happens, I lose.

Drama, Drama, Drama.

Here’s what happened Friday on Doug and Wolf:

* The Denver Broncos acknowledge that QB Jay Cutler has asked for a trade. His agent blames head coach Josh McDaniel’s for not smoothing things out when he had the chance last weekend. The Denver Post reports that 10 teams are interested in trading for Cutler, what would you give up for him?

* After struggling early and then missing most of last season with a hamstring injury, Erick Byrnes is making his Spring debut for the Diamondbacks today vs the Angels in Tempe. He is starting in centerfield. Byrnes is in his 2nd year of a 3-year $30 million contract. What does Byrnes have to do to prove that he belongs in the starting lineup?

* ASU is in the tournament for the first time since 2003. They open up today vs Temple around Noon on Sports 620 KTAR. How far does ASU have to advance in order for it to be considered a successful season?

Grid Irion Griddle:

Jay Cutler and his drama about the Bronco’s not trading their star quarterback.

Wolf says that he is sick of his thumb sucking drama.

Donte Stallworth, wide reciever for the Cleveland Browns, was reported drunk and fatally struck a man. Doug wonders what is with these athletes?

Guests:

Pauls Call: Paul Calvisi takes his sports seriously, without taking himself too seriously. Your daily dose of irreverence, angst, and stupification.

Let the games begin….

Here’s what happened Thursday on Doug and Wolf:

We are broadcasting LIVE from Basha’s in Chandler

* The Suns beat the 76ers last night, with 14 games left in the season the Suns are still 4 games out of a playoff spot. D&W think the Suns are out of the playoffs but they thought that Shaq, Nash and Hill played extremely well.

* D&W can’t wait for the March Madness to begin! Wolf is of course picking his W.V. Mountaineers over Kansas. Doug and Wolf Upset Alert is in full effect: Wolf has picked Illinois losing in the first round and Doug has picked Xavier.

*D&W have ASU advancing to the Sweet 16 while Gambo and Ash have Syracuse…loser runs the bases as a condiment. * Kurt Warner had surgery on his left hip yesterday. He is expected to be out for up to two months. Considering Warner’s age and the fact he was sacked 26 times last season along with countless other hits. Are you concerned now that this surgery will have lingering effects?  Wolf: Is not worried “Warner was never a mobile quarterback anyway, he will be fine and passing for 4,000 yards.” Doug: wonders…“If Warner passed his physical with this injury? And if he didn’t how did he sign his new contract?”

Grid Irion Griddle:

The competition committee will review a new proposition for a rule that states: “When the ball comes loose when a quarterback is throwing, replay can be used to determine if it is a fumble or an incomplete pass.”

Wolf: “Does anyone see the bigger picture here? Does anyone see the consequences of this rule change? Football players have been taught since they were five to stop playing when the whistle blows…this is so fundamentally unsound that I question my own knowledge about what is going on here.”

Guests:

Tim Kempton, Suns Analyst: Tim gave us his thoughts about the Suns chances of making the playoffs.

Steve Lavin, ESPN College Basketball Analyst: Steve talked about potential bracket busters and previewed this weekend’s NCAA games.
