My Weekend

Every Friday in the “My Weekend” blog, I’ll tell you what’s upcoming for me and make predictions to earn your respect.

As always, if you want to respond directly to me, you can e-mail me at doug@ktar.com.  If you want to right a post on this blog, please do.  I think it’s a great idea for you to interact with other Doug & Wolf listeners.  Just know I’ll never respond to posts because I think that’s your area.

Today I’m going to balance movie night and Dodgers/D-Backs.  Every Friday, I devote to my daughters.  We have a tradition of going out to dinner, going to a friends, or sitting on the couch together watching a movie.  I’ll probably tape the D-Backs game and watch it later tonight.

I think tonight’s game is the big one of the three.  With Webb pitching poorly, Haren has to be the man.  I’d also like for all of us to hold hands in prayer:  LORD, PLEASE HELP OUR COUNTRY CHOOSE THE RIGHT LEADER, PLEASE KEEP OUR TROOPS STRONG AND HEALTHY, AND PLEASE HELP CHRIS YOUNG BUNT AND STEAL BASES.

Saturday is a dream for me.  I really do love my Ohio Bobcats and they play on ESPN at 9a against Ohio State.  I’m getting up early to watch and the whole house is on lock-down–I guess you could call it a compound.  I know they’ll get blitzed but just to be one of those teams that put a scare into one of the big boys would be great.  I want the week leading up to OSU/USC to be talking heads saying, “What’s wrong with the Buckeyes?   Coming off their performance against Ohio, they don’t look very good.”

Saturday will be easier than yesterday.  Thursday night was rough for me because I love the Redskins but I guaranteed a cover for the Giants.  I hate it when I have to do that.  I need the Giants to win to earn credibility while I sit there cursing under my breath at Daniel Snyder for hiring Jim Zorn.

You’ll always know where I stand.  I will never apologize for rooting for the D-Backs, the Suns, and the Redskins, but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to call them out when they fail.  If I disagree with a decision they make, I’ll demand explanations.  I don’t think it’s wrong to root for them all and hold them accountable.

Saturday night I’ll be working with ASU.  My pre-game show starts at 5:30.  If you’re going to the game against Stanford, I’ll be in the Sun Devil Plaza next to the arena on the East side of Sun Devil Stadium.  Stop in and say hi and meet the family.

Sunday is all about the NFL and wrapping up the D-Backs series.

I’ll pick five games a week.  My rules are simple, I can pick any game on the board for credit from you against the spread and tell you what I think about ASU and the Cards.

For the local teams I say ASU beats Stanford and the Cards go 1-0.  I’m really worried about ASU getting up by two scores and then laying an egg in the second half but I think they’ll hold on.  Give Wolf credit on AZ.  I think they’ll win but I’m not guaranteeing it like Wolf.  Until I see the Cards clean up the turnovers and penalties in the regular season, I’ll believe more.  They’re still better than the 9ers though.

For the hard core fan, I went 4-1 last week.  Do you think I can keep it up?  I’ve already got one game right with NYG but I’ll still write it down for you.

NYG -4 v WSH

CIN -1 1/2 @ BAL

WAKE -8 VS OLE MISS

BALL STATE -7 VS NAVY

OKLA ST -16 1/2 VS HOUSTON

Have a good weekend.

Working for the Series

Here’s what happened Friday on Doug and Wolf:

 * Ever since Brandon Webb took a line drive to the chest, he’s been…bad. Doug suspects there is a lot more to the injury then we are being told. Wolf doesn’t see the advantage of hiding an injury in baseball and doesn’t think there is any smoking gun. He thinks that Webb and Haren are just overconfident.

* Wolf guarantees a week one win for the Cardinals against the 49ers. Doug is worried about the depth on defense though. He knows Frank Gore will wear down the D-Line.

* The Media, the Bengals, and the NFL have now recognized that Chad Johnson is now officially Chad Javon Ocho Cinco. Wolf however, puts himself above the rest and refuses to address him in such a way. It is just a mediocre publicity stunt. Wolf thinks Chad “Johnson” did it just to egg on Marvin Lewis.

* Doug thinks it’s time for Roush to really step up. He needs to be a guy who can bring this team to the next level. Doug is unsure if the DBacks will be in first place on Monday. The only have to win one game to stay in first place.

Guests:

Mark Bavaro, Author and Former NFL Tight End: Mark came on to talk about his new fiction book, Rough and Tumble. He has had some great material to use over the years and his experiences in the NFL. Mark talked about his quiet side and how this helped him become a better writer.

John Clayton, ESPN NFL Insider: John thinks that Wolf’s pick of the Cards winning the NFC West is realistic. It’s anyone’s division…well except for the 49ers. John’s sleeper pick is Carolina winning the Wild Card.

Frank Caliendo, Fox NFL Pregame Show: Frank joined the guys again to share his great impressions and great jokes alongside good insight on the NFL.

Paul’s Call: Paul Calvisi takes his sports seriously, without taking himself too seriously.  Your daily dose of irreverence, angst, and stupification.

NL West…Embarassment

Here’s what happened Friday on Doug and Wolf:

Doug looks at the NL West as simply…an embarrassment. The Dodgers got swept by the MLB worst Washington Nationals. Both agree that this series is crucial in setting up the D-backs for a playoff berth. Wolf can’t wait to see Doug Davis in the game tonight. Doug is excited for the show because the Dodgers travels plans last night must have been so chaotic, that the D-backs are guaranteed to win.

Guests:

Jim Cross, KTAR Reporter: Jim joined us to talk about the brand new ASU Practice facility which cost over 8 million. It was completely destroyed in the storm last night. Pieces of the facility are in Tempe Town Lake and scattered around Tempe.

Buster Olney, ESPN MLB Insider: Buster talked about the poor scheduling by the Dodgers. He believes the long travel will affect LA’s chances. Buster agrees with D&W that these games are crucial for heading to the post season. He doesn’t think there will be any big additions for any teams except the Angels might pick up David Eckstein.

John Clayton, ESPN NFL Insider: John is not surprised with how the Adam Jones situation turned out. He also mentioned that Pacman was at Hooters when he heard the news. At least they have clothes on at Hooters.

The Blame Train Hits Melvin

Here’s what happened Thursday on Doug and Wolf:

* The D-backs got swept by one of the worst teams in baseball. Now it seems the blame train is starting to head towards Bob Melvin. There were a few situations last night that were unacceptable to the guys. Wolf was upset there wasn’t someone ready in the sixth to relieve the Unit. Doug was fine with it because he would rather have RJ slowly destroy his back than put the bullpen out there. Is Jarrod Parker ready yet?

* Cards Coach Whisenhunt said to not read into the decision to start Warner in tomorrow’s game. So, Doug decided to read into it. Wolf says Leinart is going to get most of his work with the second team. So is the controversy over? Wolf poses the question, what if Kurt plays terrible and Leinart has a great game? He believes Leinart is one good game away from the light bulb turning on.

Guests:
Derrick Hall, D-backs President: Derrick came on to talk about the disappointing losses to the Padres. However Wolf and Derrick are excited about the all you can eat buffet and upcoming games.

Greg Schulte, Voice of the D-backs: Greg came on to talk about the Padres series finale. He was also surprised that they pitched to the Padres version of Babe Ruth.

Grid Iron Griddle:
John Junker, Fiesta Bowl President: John came on in the Grid Iron Griddle to talk about the college football season and how excited he is about the Fiesta Bowl this year.

Paul’s Call:
Paul Calvisi takes his sports seriously, without taking himself too seriously. You’re your daily dose of irreverence, angst, and stupification.

The Crunk List:

Craig Sager in a recent blog interview let loose a surprising story about Ted Turner and Jane Fonda. Let’s just say…we had to bleep out a certain word.
