The Wizard of Westgate

Special to the Jon Bloom blog by Tom Williams who came up with this Sunday night.

Turned and tossed,  above with Graves, heading to the Super Bowl in 14 days,

Brought from the dead to end the curse, even the Lions… couldn’t do worse,

From Tempe to Westgate the Cardinal’s showed class,

They finally got enough talent to kick people in the ass!

Congratulations to the Bidwill family it has been a long wait,

We’re finally in the Super Bowl…I just can’t wait…

Aeneas and Centers, Beuerlein and Chuck, Bugel and Buddy didn’t have good luck,

Thanks for the talent, Coach Green was on his game, and the Wizard led the troops no pointing fingers to blame…

And so for all you people who threw stones at the Carnies, be able to admit that this team never quit…they believed in themselves these ordinary men, did extraordinary things to get a big  WIN!

No you’re not dreaming

What a wacky few weeks it’s been.  We went from wondering if the Cardinals would be able to finish the regular season with a winning record, to watching them dispose of two teams from what many consider to be the toughest division in the NFL in the first two rounds of the playoffs.

If I said I expected this, I’d be lying to you like Kobe to his wife after a trip to a Colorado resort.  That said, when I size up the matchup in Sunday’s NFC Championship game and just look at it as a football game (which is actually what it is), I can’t help but think the Cards are going to win and go to Tampa as one of the last 2 teams standing in the NFL.  It’s when I think about the magnitude of this prediction (actually picking the Cardinals to go to the Super Bowl) that doubt starts to sink in, not when I think about whether or not this team can beat the Eagles.

Sure I’m aware of how good and dominant the Eagles defense has looked lately.  And, yes, I’m familiar with the fact that Philly has been there before (5 title games in 8 years).  I also know that they embarrassed the Cards on Thanksgiving night and just shut down the defending champs on the road.  None of these factors are enough to convince me that the Eagles are ready to roll into what will be an absolutely electric atmosphere in Glendale and come out victorious.

Keep in mind, this is coming from a guy who is an admitted fan of both the star quarterback and wide receiver who will be wearing green and white.  I went to school with Donovan McNabb at da ‘Cuse and frequently played pickup basketball with him while also contributing on a radio show with the man I consider to be one of the best “guys” in sports.  His rookie wideout Desean Jackson also became a favorite of mine several years ago while lighting up the highlight reels for my beloved Golden Bears at Cal.

The big reason I think Arizona accomplishes the unthinkable on Sunday is the respect factor.  While many of my cohorts will disagree and give the mental edge to Philly thanks to their 48-20 Turkey Day victory, I strenuously object to that notion.  When the Eagles line up Sunday and look across at their opponent, no matter how much their coaches have stressed during the last week of preperation, they will remember blitzing Big Red right out of the city of Brotherly Love.  Sure they might be filled with confidence thanks to that memory, but it’s human nature for them to think they are facing a subpar opponent and thus have a lack of respect for who their up against.  Meanwhile, the Cards will definitely recall being embarrassed by that team and add that to the long list of things that have propelled them to wear tee shirts with the phrase “Prove It” around the lockerroom this week.

The other factor that can’t be overlooked is the home field advantage which will once again play a huge role on Sunday.  As I prepare to man the P.A. booth at University of Phoenix Stadium, I can’t wait to see and hear what you Cardinals fans are capable of this weekend and look forward to what will without a doubt be one of the most memorable sporting events I’ve ever been a part of.

Prediction:

Cardinals 27
Eagles 24

No you’re not dreaming…the Cardinals are going to the Super Bowl!!!!

Great time to be a sports fan in the Valley

I know there are those of you who wish you were a Boston sports fan, and how can anyone blame you after seeing what those folks have been able to enjoy over the last few years.  But as of right now I don’t think there are many better places to be a sports fan than right here in Phoenix.

The Cardinals are hosting their first playoff game since coming to Arizona this Saturday and it should be quite an atmosphere at University of Phoenix Stadium.  In fact, I truly believe that Cards fans will play a huge role in the victory should they be able to knock off the Falcons this weekend.

The Suns are back to playing a more entertaining brand of basketball and there are some very good matchups coming up at the purple palace not to mention the NBA All Star Weekend in February.

One of the best sporting events of the year happens in our backyard although the majority of you who go to the FBR Open don’t go for the sport, but rather the spectacle that takes place annually at the FBR Open.  Not that I’m mad at you for that…you still have to admit that the “Greatest Show on Grass” is one of the highlights of your year!

As a full fledged college hoops junkie, I’m excited to follow James Harden and the ASU Sun Devils as they get into the Pac-10 season  and gear up for my favorite time of year…March Madness.  The spring here is unparalleled as we not only get the Sweet Sixteen at U of P Stadium, but as usual Spring Training takes over and if you don’t take time to enjoy that as a valley resident, you can’t call yourself a true sports fan.

Oh and another reason to be excited…last time I checked we won’t be dealing with 2 feet of snow blocking our driveways or below freezing windchills unlike the majority of this wonderful country we call home.

So as you get ready to enter 2009 just remember how lucky you are to be living here right now and don’t forget to take advantage of the opportunities that are out there for you…I know I won’t!

Plenty of shots to go around

For those who think there aren’t enough basketballs for the Suns star players to share, let tonight’s game in Portland be an example.  The way the offense looks right now reminds me of what it’s like when I get together with my boys from high school.  Whenever we hit the bars we have a knack of rotating who buys the rounds throughout the night, and nobody worries about being left out of the rotation.  It’s something that we’ve picked up over years of practice, and while our core group has remained the same there have been new additions to the posse and they eventually blend right in the fold.

Steve Nash, Amare Stoudemire and Leandro Barbosa are the three guys left from the Suns core over the past few years.  Those guys know they are going to get their touches and while Shaq, J-Rich, Grant Hill and Matt Barnes are new to the group, it seems as if their roles are starting to get defined.

Phoenix opened the game pounding it down to Shaq while Amare showed some surprising unselfishness in the post.  Jason Richardson got free and hit 3 of 4 shots from downtown to help the Suns out to an early lead which stood at seven at the half.  That was with just six points on 1 of 5 shooting from Amare, prompting a studio discussion between technical director Jarrett Carlen and myself about when Stoudemire will start complaining of the lack of touches.  That issue was kicked to the curb as the Suns made STAT the focal point of the offense to start the second half and built a 12 point lead on his broad shoulders and smooth stroke from the free throw line. Steve Nash and Shaq both took a back seat to start the second half, while Matt Barnes and Leandro Barbosa continued to give the team solid minutes off the bench.

The bugaboos that continue to hurt the Suns are turnovers and perimeter defense and once again those were both exploited by the Blazers.  Brandon Roy was the man doing the damage this time as he continued his hot stretch with his 5th straight game over 29 points and a career high 52 points.  Before you point your finger at Jason Richardson and yearn for Raja Bell’s so-called defensive prowess, watch the film and you’ll see that Roy did most of his scoring when guarded by those not wearing #23, but that doesn’t excuse the Suns for their inability to shut the Blazers star down.  In the end it goes down as a very entertaining but painful 124-119 loss to an extremely talented and young Portland team who had lost 11 in a row to the Suns heading in.  I guess the streak had to end sometime.

Feeling like an Olympian

For the first time in my life, I kind of feel like an athlete who’s trained and competed in the Olympics. Now, if you’ve met me then you know by no means do I resemble one in stature as I ‘m way too fat to be a gymnast or a skater and not nearly big or strong enough to throw the shot put or do a clean and jerk (I’ve always wanted to use that phrase).

No, the real reason I feel like an Olympian is that I have been in training for most of my life to perform the task I got to perform last night at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater, OK.

While I’ve probably called hundreds of football games over the last 15 years or so, last night was my big moment, and what a blast it was describing the action of 3rd ranked Oklahoma’s 61-41 win over #12 Oklahoma State to a national audience on the Touchdown Radio Network. To be honest, it would have been almost as satisfying calling that game into a tape recorder from the stands like I use to do in training years ago, but I’m not gonna lie, it was a pretty cool feeling knowing that friends and family from San Diego to Detroit could be driving around listening to me describe the action of the game of the week in college football.

When the dust cleared and feeling returned to my feet (we broadcasted from an open air auxiliary booth on the roof of the lovely renovated stadium with temperatures dropping from the 40’s to the mid 30’s during the game), I’m not going to say I got a perfect 10 from the Russian judge or even that I stuck the landing…but as my own harshest critic, I felt pleased with the overall effort and was more than sufficiently prepared for the opportunity.
Heck, as a play by play guy, 102 points and over a 1000 yards of total offense is like putting a happy meal in front of a hungry toddler.

For those of you who may have missed it, there’s a reason they call that rivalry “Bedlam” and boy did last night’s game deliver as advertised. If OU isn’t one of the top 2 teams in the country and Sooners’ sophomore QB Sam Bradford doesn’t win the Heisman than there’s something seriously wrong with the sport many of us love so much.

At one point during the broadcast, former Heisman Trophy winner Gino Torretta (my color commentator and CEO of Touchdown Radio) remarked that the stats looked like we were watching a video game…he wasn’t kidding! OU’s top ranked offense could not be stopped as they rolled up over 60 points for the 4th straight game. But OSU is no slouch on that side of the ball either and if it wasn’t for 2 costly turnovers, the Cowboys may have hung in there with a chance to pull the upset.

In the end, the game will go down as another in an endless line of Big 12 shootouts in 2008. But for me, I’ll never forget making a dream come true on a chilly night in Stillwater.
