You as parents, need to teach him to tie his shoes, not shame him into learning. Shame on you for not helping him to learn this sooner so he wouldn’t be in an embarrasing situation now. Don’t make it a big deal or a punishment, just keep working with him. Sounded like you went overboard taking the shoes to school. Sorry, truth hurts sometimes.
