Ankarlo Mornings 8-14-07

August 14, 2007

Tuesday, August 14, 2007: Darrell doesn’t think the Chandler Police Seargant should be punished after leaving his K-9 in his car. It was just an accident and he is already beating himself up. Some of you disagree. Sgt. Tom Lovejoy’s wife, Carolyn calls in to explain what the family is going through. Mayor Phil Gordon makes his weekly visit to Ankarlo mornings too. During our trip to Mexico we got a first hand look at a border check point on I-19 south of Tucson. The US Border Patrol wants to make this a permanent check point, but there is some opposition from some of the community members. Darrell talks to the spokesperson for the Coalition for Safe and Secure Borders, Carol Cullen. Border Patrol Agent Richard DeWitt explains the Border Patrol’s point of view. Now, that’s fairness! And in the final hour of the show, Darrell congratulates the Chandler Little League team for going to the World Series. But, at the same time wonders if you would give money to help the parents get there. Enjoy!

This is certainly a tragedy, and I shudder to think I could make the same mistake. I agree with Darrell, disciplinary action, retribution of the costs of training and purchasing this dog, and the heartache are enough for Officer Lovejoy and his family.
I think he should be assigned another canine partner when he is ready. Why waste this officer’s training? Would he not be incredibly viligant with his next partner? From what has been shared, this tragedy came about from a number of unusual circumstances, including different behavior of Bandit himself. I don’t believe for a second that this was at all purposeful or from reckless behavior. Anyone who works with an animal like these handlers do is dedicated. If, as someone stated or blogged, this is a felony, than what of the infants that die this way?
I completely support this family and hope that they continue to stand strong through this adversity. Kudos to Carolyn Lovejoy for her strength and courage, and love for her husband. Please know you are all in our hearts and prayers.

I now live in Dallas Texas, I know Tom and all the rest of the K-9 officers for Chandler. They all are top notch first class Officers and Handlers. The loss to the force and the K-9 team is just as loosing a human officer. The reason they have the dogs is to take less chances for a human officer to be killed in going after the bad guys. So this horrific event was an accident. Tom and his family will forever have this tragedy in mind. I know that all the officers on the Chandler PD are at a loss for what happened. Charges should never be charged, he lost his partner, his friend that would defend his life. This accident was just that an accident. I know the love, the training, the hours they all spend with their partners. Tom deserves a second chance and I would trust Tom, and the other K-9 officers at chandler Pd with my kids and my dog. They are all good people and it was simply an accident.

I can’t believe your stance on the Chandler police officer whose dog died after being left in the police car. Earlier this week you stated individuals should wear “I am studid t-shirts” for leaving pets and kids in cars and now you are stating this officer should not be held accountable for his dog being left in a car to “cook to death”. Why the change of heart? I missed your show today.

Shame on you for virtually condoning Officer Lovejoy’s criminal treatment of his “ward”, Bandit! Handlers are supposed to treat their dogs as one of the family, yet he couldn’t be bothered to remember that he had left Bandit in his car to be baked alive! Where was his wife? If Bandit was “one of the family”, shouldn’t she have shown concern that her husband had come home without their family member? Police officers are “supposed” to set examples for the rest of the community. What kind of an example has Officer Lovejoy provided?

I had a lot going on a year ago due to my nephew’s suicide and I did the same thing with my dog..left her in the car. I was fortunate that she was found after a couple hrs and even tho it was touch and go for a week in the emergency animal hosp..she pulled thru and has suffered no damage. Before that happened I could never understand how people could “forget” their animal in the car. When there’s a lot of trauma going on in your life, it can happen. I too beat myself up tremendously and was my own worst enemy and I still shudder when I think about it and what could have happened. We need to leave the officer and his family alone, they are grieving, believe me.

Got something to say?
