Don’t worry about learning the language

March 4, 2008

Less and less immigrants becoming citizens in Canada are learning one of the two languages spoken there, English and French.

As Toronto’s Daily Star writes:

In B.C. and Ontario, the provinces where most immigrants land, a large number reported using a language other than English or French at work. The proportion held steady at 30 per cent in B.C. over a five-year period and dipped only slightly to 20 per cent from 21 per cent in Ontario.

You can be sure this is happening in America right now. Most of us are not opposed to legal immigration. As Americans, we can appreciate the value of making a better life for yourself as long as you are willing to work hard and not exploit the system. Is it too much to ask you learn the language of the country you are coming to? I don’t think so.

I think are children (White, Americans) should be taught Spanish for free. There should be a program for them to learn Spanish just as they have the program in the schools for the children who speak Spanish or “Non English Speaking” to learn English. Children learn faster at a younger age, their brains are like “sponges”. I called the Education Board and the comment I received from the person who answered the phone is that they can take the class in High School. That is when I gave her the same response I mentioned above that the children can learn the language faster and better at a younger elementary school age (K-5), that their brains are like a “sponge” absorb everything. Our American/White children are being “left behind” and I thought the school are suppose to be no children left behind. For our children to learn Spanish would be a BIG BENEFIT for their future (Work and Life). I feel it is discriminating.

Why should our children have to learn another language other then English to survive in America? The immigrants that come to any country should learn the language of the land. Not expect everyone else to change things to their language. America is turning into a big push-over nation. This needs to stop. If immigrants would just be respectful enough to try and learn the language, they would get a lot more respect then they do now. That’s just my opinion.

I think there is a lot to say about people using our kindness and “sense of fairness” against us and our culture, and in this case, our language. This London man hits the nail right on the head about western society - we are allowing foreigners to push us around and use our generousity as a weapon against us. Please check out the website that I attached. This man asks the question, of whether “my freedom is more important than your faith.”

Why is no one outraged at “press 1 for English”. I have no problem with “press 1 for Spanish” but making us choose the default language in an country whose natonal language is English is an outrage. Perhaps an economic boycott is in order.

Despite the best intentions of some liberals, languages are not “equal” in countries with national (and legal) languages. That’s why courts have translators.

I totally agree with you! I hate to call a business an have to push 1 for english. I feel like I must be in a different country. This is the USA and we have a right to have everything in English. Every time I go to the store and see something I would like to buy, I always have to turn the box around to read the english side. They always put the spanish side in front! I get so furious!

Got something to say?
