It’s Friday and it’s the last day in Tampa Bay for the Ankarlo crew and today was started off asking the question with businesses closing, is it out obligation to help them out and buy things or go out to dinner? The boy in St.Johns that was charged killing his father and father’s roommate may get to go home for awhile….Is that fair? Game day traditions, do you have one that you like to do before you watch your favorite team plays? We also have out Courtesy Chevrolet community champion, and before the show closed Ankarlo and Diane asked former NFL quarterback Joe Theisman his prediction of the game.

Never fails what people will do for money….Ankarlo had a challenge for Diane and Rob on how to profit some of that green stuff. Go Tampa!!

January 29, 2009

It’s Thursday in Florida-day 3 of our visit to Tampa and Super Bowl 43. So far, my team (Diane, Rob and me) has taken in Media Day with the cast and crew from the Cards and the Steelers, enjoyed a party or two (nice little get-togethers but the BIG ones don’t really start until Friday night), hung out on Radio Row with over 100 other radio stations and spotted a LOT of football stars-past and present. And, in the middle of it all, it’s been quite boring to say the least.

Don’t get me wrong, the best part of my job is always when I have the chance to experience new places and things and then tell you about it. So, from that perspective, it’s been terrific. On the other hand, this is Super Bowl 43. S.U.P.E.R. B.O.W.L. 43!! I fully expected to see a town decked out and waiting for its time in the national spotlight-you know, kind of like Glendale and Scottsdale. Instead, many here haven’t been able to tell me who’s playing in the big game on Sunday and those that can seem to have a ho-hum attitude about it, sort of a “been there done that” attitude.I realize the Valley’s chance to shine has been limited when compared to Tampa and Miami but come on-how about a little razzmatazz-magic?! The football gods seem to smile quite frequently on this part of the country, why not at least smile about it. The airport had zero signage (other than some 81/2 by 11 sheets of paper taped to one of the tram’s windows and they even got that wrong because they cheered for the wrong team (Go Steelers! What?!). The paper and TV stations are just now getting in on the coverage and the streets are anything but festive. Nothing!

But, I’m not complaining. No sir. Not for a minute. I hope Tampa keeps it up just like they are-don’t change a thing folks. You see, the way I look at it, if the universe’s leaders in put-a-price-tag on anything and everything mindset (Read that: NFL.) don’t like what they see this time around in the Sunshine State, Arizona will have a better shot at landing another hosting opportunity-sooner rather than later.

We enjoyed the buzz, the visitors, the energy and the money that came to town as Glendale Mayor Elaine Scruggs delivered on all promises and of course would love to do it again. So, I’m cheering for two things this year: A Cards win and a Tampa loss!

It’s day 2 at the Super Bowl and the crew was ready for another day of excitement on media row. Ankarlo, Diane and Rob got to go to a Super bowl media party last night and sounds like they had a good time, well I think they did, you be the judge of that. Sheriff Joe Arpario  was on the show today and he wants to use the new light rail as a patty wagon..well sorta. He’s calling it the con rail, find out what Ankarlo thinks. A company in Florida is making a Caylee Anthony doll to honor her, or is it? Ankarlo has some thoughts about that and your phone calls. CBS 5 is investigating a story of a website framing the Tempe police department, and we  hear from Guest Rebecca Long who has a unemployment boot camp.

January 27, 2009

It’s day one at the Super Bowl in Tampa Bay, Florida and Ankarlo, Rob and Diane are all there live this week letting you know what’s going on with are Arizona Cardinals. It was media day today for the players and coaches and Ankarlo sent Diane to talk to some of the players and get the vibe on what was going on there. President Obama was on an Arabic TV station the other day and some of the comments our President made were not really setting well with Ankarlo. Don’t forget Tuesday is our weekly visit with Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and he talked a little about his Super Bowl bet with the Mayor of Pittsburgh.

One of Ankarlo’s favorite subjects…..speed cameras, oh yeah he has more to add to what he has already said about this subject and an elderly man in Michigan froze to death in his home….because the he did not pay his electric bill and the city turned it off. So with no electricity comes no heat, who’s fault was it? Ankarlo has his opinion on who and why.

Today on Ankarlo Mornings: A team lost 100-0 and they are whining about it. The winning team has apologized and fired the head coach. Ankarlo says this is just ridiculous. This team couldn’t score a point? And losing is just losing. Do better next time.

Another coach is being charged in the death of one his players. The 15-year old died after practicing in 94 degree heat. Why is the coach being held responsible?

Ankarlo also takes your calls today about the ailing economy. What are you doing to get by?

In the final hour, the focus moves to education. Ankarlo talks with Paul Giblin from the Arizona Guardian to get the latest. Some lawmakers want to cut education funding to deal with our state budget deficit. Ashlea Deahl from the Phoenix Magazine calls in to tell us about her dog being attacked by a pit bull. Her little dog was lucky to survive. Ashlea also was bitten in the fight.

Finally, Johnny V from Sports 620 previews our trip to Tampa.

Kill the Speed Cams

January 26, 2009

Odds are that if you’re hearing me right now you have passed or will pass by one of the straight-from-the-pits-of-hell speed cameras.  But, thankfully, this sad Janet Napolitano mistake may be coming to an end.  The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee voted 5-2 last week to approve House Bill 2106.  Since most of us don’t keep track of the bill names let me lay it out for ya—HB2106 will force the stupid speed cams off of our state’s highways.  Finally, the legislature is getting into the act after the outgoing governor made the deal with the highway devils without asking a whole lot of people about it.  This is not about speeding and breaking the law, please understand this.  It is about the government invading our privacy and creating systems that amount to nothing less than money grabs.  Write your state representative today and ask them to vote YES to HB 2106.  Drive safely.  Drive smart.  Slow the government’s encroachments.

Ankarlo’s Take is written for broadcast.  You can hear it live during Arizona’s Morning News at 7:20 on News/Talk 92.3 KTAR.
