Obama the Hopeful
February 25, 2009
President Obama has been using what some news commentators call a “charm offensive” since his first week in office and on Tuesday night’s address to congress he put it into hyper-drive. He was funny, sincere, brought a very difficult economic issue into American homes in a way that was understandable to most and, in this time when most are in a genuine funk, he played the role of executive cheerleader—a role he had to play. His outlined goals are to be applauded many of them anyway, but the sincere concern is just when the president will come to us with another request for money. I was monitoring my Twitter account during the speech and NBC’s David Gregory asked “is there any question the president is getting ready to ask congress for more money to bail out the banks?” I’m just a little worried that we are getting so used to trillions in cash infusions that by the time the bill comes due for all the promises, the dream itself will be lost.
