DANCE WITH MY FATHER…

It seems like just yesterday that I danced with my father.

I remember when I was 5 years old and running to him the minute I’d hear a Freddy Fender song play and stand on his feet and grab his waist so that we could dance together. Before the Last Teardrop Falls, was one of our favorites and he would hold me as we danced together across the room…I never wanted the song to end. And the lyrics were fitting:

I’ll be there anytime

You need me by your side

To drive away every teardrop that you cried…

I share a lot of blessed memories with my father along with life long lessons:

-Dad taught me that cleanliness is next to Godliness. I never had a hair out of place, a stain on my clothes or a scuff mark on my shoes. If he could carry me so that I wouldn’t touch the dirty ground, he’d do it…even now, if I’d let him.

-Dad could do the laundry, wash all the cars, vacuum the entire house, dust and cook up lunch all before 12 noon.

-Wrinkles were not allowed. My brother and I walked around in starched and pressed clothes. Our creases had creases! Dad was a slave to the iron (it had to be the Navy man in him)

-Dad knew I sucked at math and he was always patient with me. My math problems never made sense until he’d show me how to do it

-When it came to deadbeat boyfriends, he’d let me fall. He always trusted that I was smart enough to make my own decisions when it came to guys and in the end I’d always drop the zeros

-My dad was in the military, so there were many times where he’d have to go out to sea — 9 months to a year at a time. I remember how he’d take the family out for a drive the night before he had to leave and we’d get ice cream and just enjoy driving around with him until the sun set

-I remember when the morning would come for dad to leave to the ship for Westpac and I’d cry uncontrollably after he’d leave. I never wanted him to see me cry because I didn’t want to make him sad or have his last image of me in tears

-I remember the Grease soundtrack that my dad bought me. I played it so much that I wore the tape out and he ended up buying me anothe rcopy

-I always looked forward to the road trips we made to San Antonio, Texas in dad’s brown Camaro

-Because Dad was a stickler on having a well manicured lawn, he never let us have a Slip-n-Slide. “It damages the grass!” he’d say

-I remember the purple bike he taught me to ride without training wheels. It was the coolest bike ever and I’m sure he was on the verge of having a coronary watching me fall constantly. I’m surprised I wasn’t wrapped in bubble wrap from the first attempt

-If my brother or I got hurt, Dad would automatically get upset, “WHAT?! What NOW?!” He immediately went into panic mode

-One of the hardest days of my life was having to tell my father that his dad, my grandfather, had pased away

-Dad was the first person to ever introduce me to rap music! He had the vinyl record for The Sugar Hill Gang, Rapper’s Delight. I loved the song so much, that to this day, I still remember every single lyric. (I’m a pretty big hit at karaoke bars)

-My dad always waited up for me when I went out with my girlfriends. I’d always bring him home a late night treat like a dessert or Mexican food and we’d stay up in the kitchen and just talk

-When my mother would cook live and onions (a dish I despised) Dad would say, “Mmmm, higado (Spanish for liver)…eat it! It’sll put hair on your chest!”

-My dad is obsessive compulsive when it comes to locked doors. he’ll quadruple check the front door and garage door before he goes to sleep. He’d always tell me to keep my car door locked when I went out and made me prove it as I backed out of the driveway

-When I decided that it was a good idea to “bleach” my brown hair in the 8th grade and it turned orange, he said I looked like an Aztec Indian. I scoffed…but now looking back at the pic-Yikes, it was horrible.

-My dad washed his hair with soap and always smelled good

-Dad could always bake up a mean Bundt cake and cheesecake

-My dad was a stickler when it came to time management. If my curfew was 12 midnight, he meant 12 midnight on the dot. Not 12:01, not 12:03. If I wasn’t through the door at exactly 12 midnight, I would expect him sitting and waiting for me on the stairs with a clock in his hand asking me if I knew what time it was

-”Where’s my change?” was his favorite line

-”Dad, do you have a couple a bucks?” was mine

-I remember when The Wonderful World of Disney would come on TV when I was little. I would grab a pillow and make myself comfy on dad’s lap and we’d watch it together

-I’d always pretend that I was asleep in the car when we’d drive home late from somewhere and he’d end up having to pick me up and take me to my room

-My father was such a great husband to my mother. He loved her and I reveled in the affection he showed her

-When mom and I would get in a disagreement, I would run to him and he’d listen- even though he’d usually be in agreement with my mother, I still felt like he had my back

-Dad was the only one who could make me laugh until my sides hurt

-Even when I visit my father’s house today, the flood of warm memories fill my soul as soon as I walk through his front door.

My father was and still is, the epitome of a great man. His love and inspiration have transformed me into the woman I am today. He taught me to never settle for second best and brought me up knowing that I could have anything I wanted with hard work. His encouraging words and unconditional love continue to resonate. Every chapter in my life from childhood to adulthood to marriage and children, I continue to look to him for guidance.

The last time I danced with my father, it was during my wedding. And like the Freddy Fender song, I didn’t want it to end. Deep inside, I felt that once the song ended and he let go…that I’d have to move on and let go of him. But …I haven’t…and never will.

If I could get another chance…Another walk, another dance with him, I’d play a song that would never, ever end. How I’d love to dance with my father again…

Ankarlo Update…

Many of you have been asking when Ankarlo is coming back. To be honest, I don’t know yet. But, what I can tell you is he is making progress. I saw him earlier this week and the signs of progress are evident. For those of you wondering where Ankarlo has been: He was in a serious car accident on April 8th and suffered a severe concussion. He has been out since then due to complications from the accident. Austin Hill and Kid Stevens have been filling in on Ankarlo Mornings. They will continue to hold it down until Ankarlo is healthy enough to return.

Thank you for all your concern and well wishes. We are all very appreciative.

This picture sits at my office at work.

I can’t help but smile whenever I look at it.

It has all the elements that make me happy: the wind, the beach, the white sand between my four year old toes…and my mother…

I look at this picture and I see a child with no worries in the world with a mother who constantly dotes over her with all her love and support; a father behind the camera who captures the moment on film knowing that one day his daughter will look back on this photo with heartfelt emotion and love.

I still hear the waves crashing in the background and the seagulls fluttering above.

I still smell her Oil of Olay skin cream and the scent of her flowery perfume.

It’s a perfect mixture that dances with the fresh ocean air and warm sun.

Her warm hugs and infectious laughter still resonate within my soul.

The joy, the energy, the light in her eyes when she looked at me. I was her world.

The smiles…the happiness…the comfort of being a kid.

A blessed childhood.

Time goes by so fast, I can hardly catch my breath.

Ankarlo Still Resting

Ankarlo still needs more rest and will be home this week doing just that. He is still recovering from a severe concussion he received in a car accident two and a half weeks ago. His doctors have told him to sleep, sleep and sleep. He says he has been getting a lot of rest. I will keep you updated.

After the September 11th attacks we all wanted our government to protect us from the threat of terrorism. The Bush administration (with the suggestion of several Democrats) created the Department of Homeland Security to do just that. This week that agency created a firestorm when they released a report called, Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment.

The assessment warns that, “rightwing extremists may be gaining new recruits by playing on their fears about several emergent issues,” such as the economic downturn and the election of our nation’s first black president. In addition, “rightwing extremists will attempt to recruit and radicalize returning veterans in order to exploit their skills and knowledge derived from military training and combat.”

It goes on to say, “Many rightwing extremists are antagonistic toward the new presidential administration and its perceived stance on a range of issues, including immigration and citizenship, the expansion of social programs to minorities and restrictions on firearms ownership and use.” Later it says, “rightwing extremists will attempt to recruit and radicalize returning veterans in order to exploit their skills and knowledge derived from military training and combat.” Now, everyone seems to be saying this report is offensive to veterans, people that believe in state’s rights and the constitution. Some even believe the government is keeping tabs on conservatives that don’t agree with abortion.

Even Senator John McCain chimed in, ”I think it’s an insult to the men and women who have served our country in the armed services.” Senator Jon Kyl added, “I don’t know where they get the idea that somebody who served the country, who’s pro-10th Amendment, pro-Second Amendment, who’s pro-state’s rights, makes them a security threat to the United States. That’s sort of a belief in the U.S. Constitution in my book.”

Can I be honest with you? If you think this way you are over reacting. Nowhere in this Homeland Security assessment does it say that returning military members are a threat. It simply points out that a 2008 FBI report found that “some” returning veterans have become involved with white supremacy groups. That’s a fact. It’s not conjecture. Nowhere in this report does it say that if you believe in the U.S. Constitution, if you are pro-life, go to Church or if you belive in the right to own a gun you are an extremist. It’s just not in there. The government isn’t watching you. They don’t have the resources or the time.

The Department of Homeland Security is doing exactly what we asked them to do back in 2001. They are studying different organizations to determine whether or not they pose a threat to this country. DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano called them “routine.”She added, “Let’s focus on what this is. It’s an assessment of a situation where you have a down economy and other factors that go on that historically have given rise to violence…we (DHS) try to protect against violence all the time.” The report warns of the rise of extremists groups similar to those that formed in the 1990’s. It’s not talking about attending a tea party. So let’s be honest. Let’s stop trying to drum up fear and make this something it’s not.

You remember the name Richard Poplawski? On April 4, 2009 he murdered three police officers in Pittsburgh. He had no real reason to kill them though he thought Obama was going to take his guns away. He frequented white surpremacist chat rooms talking about a “Zionist occupation.” He even attempted to become a Marine in 2005, but was discharged after punching his drill sergeant. Clearly, this murderer is disturbed. He is the type of person DHS want law enforcement to look out for, not you.

The Department of Homeland Security has released two reports in the past couple of months looking into the different types of rightwing and leftwing extremism. Ankarlo is talking about these today.

Groups across America participated in “We Surround Them.” Thousands have engaged in, or will a 21^st Century Tea Party. Millions of citizens want illegal immigrants turned away at the front door. In recent months 7 million of you went on government watch lists because you applied for a gun permit.Homeland Security Director Janet Napolitano in a 9 page paper released last week identified all off those people and more as potential terrorist. She said in part, “…”right wing extremists are antagonistic toward the new presidential administration and its perceived stance on a range of issues, including immigration and citizenship, the expansion of social programs to minorities, and restrictions on firearms and use.” She called her report, “Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment.” According to author Roger Hedgcock there are 850,000 federal authorities to keep an eye on right wing citizens—in other words the new terrorists of 2009. Oh she did a paper on those crazy left leaning Americans—you’ll get yours too. The 10^th Amendment reads,” The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” In other words, this country was founded on the principle of strong and powerful states rights. No more!“I believe that our federal government has become oppressive in its size, its intrusion into the lives of our citizens, and its interference with the affairs of our state,” Gov. Perry said. He added, “I am here today to express my unwavering support for efforts all across our country to reaffirm the states’ rights affirmed by the Tenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. If we don’t get a handle on our nation now and if good men and women of America don’t make a run office soon—soon there won’t be in offices left to apply for!Ankarlo’s Take is written for broadcast. For those of you that have been following this show for a while, you will know that Ankarlo always has a story to tell. He has had a million experiences in his life and last week had another one. Ankarlo was knocked unconscious after a car accident on Wednesday. He retold the story this morning during the show. Of course, he brought his sense of humor with him and admitted to signing along to one of his favorite songs, Bohemian Rhapsody right before the accident. I tried to warn him about that song.

We are all glad is he back on the air today, but more importantly we are glad he is healthy! The entire Ankarlo team appreciates all your well wishes that you sent to him via this webpage, twitter and facebook.

Old Glory At Sea

Old Glory, on the open seas, has always meant fairness, safety and protection. It has been with deep interest as the world as watched how our naval ships would react to a boatful of Somali pirates. Those same pirates have kidnapped, killed and jettisoned away with millions in ransom money when other countries have been involved, but this time the thugs picked on a cargo ship flying our old red, white and blue. No doubt the captain of one of the awaiting war ships will face some discipline, after all the kidnapped captain, 53-year-old freighter Capt. Richard Phillips was able to jump in the water and attempt a get away but by the time our military made a full ID he had be reclaimed. Folks, there should have been snipers who dared not blink an eye the first time but they got it right the second time around. The Somali pirates aimed AK47s at Captain Philip’s head and that’s all she wrote. Three terrorists were dead before they closed their eyes and the fourth threw his hands in the air. And there was a great lesson learned. Hijack, kidnap and attack other vessels and that’s one thing. Mess with America and it’s the last story you’ll ever tell.

Baseball fans with no class

Last Wednesday afternoon I was able to attend a Diamondbacks game with the Ankarlo team and as I was there an inning had ended and one of the d-back players flung the ball into the crowd and I saw kids with their gloves ready to catch it, as soon as it came upon them two adult males tried to grab it up and in doing so bumped some of the kids and caught the ball for their own. It was clearly for one of the kids and these two IDIOTS had thought they were funny and clever. I saw the disappointment in the kids faces and the anger in some of the other fans, and as I looked up at the jerk that took the ball and was about to say something but lucky for me I didn’t have to because the two men got an ear full from other people around them. The jerk with the ball just smiled and showed everyone that he had the ball and just kept taunting the crowd that he was the IDIOT of the week. While he was doing this along came two older ladies, they went over to the IDIOT and said something to him that made him and his companion leave their seats. The IDIOT had a sour look on his face and just left, I wish I knew what was said but it didn’t matter at this point because they were leaving and the fans around them were clapping as they left.

I just don’t understand why people have to be such IDIOTS and not think about other people other then themselves. If it’s not in the ball park it could be on the freeway, a store , restaurant, ect. I had a great time with friends and kudos to the fans that spoke up and told the IDIOT that he was an IDIOT for doing what he did and hopefully he will think twice doing something like that again, but I doubt it.

Ankarlo in an Accident

Ankarlo was in a car accident yesterday. He is doing well. He driving home from yesterday’s DBacks game and was hit. After a period of unconsciousness he awoke in the hospital. They did a number of tests and determined Ankarlo was well enough to go home. I spoke to him last night and he was in very good spirits. Both the doctors and his wife told him not to work today. How can you argue with that? And his car was totalled. Sad. At least he is well though!

Today my daughter turned 10

It’s a bittersweet moment for me. I’m excited that she’s entered the double digits and has a lot to look forward to come her teenage years…and yet…my heart is heavy with the thoughts of yesterday…

Ten years ago at 9:43 am and four hours of labor, she entered the world - all 7lbs 12 oz. of her. Like any new mother, as soon as my eyes met hers, the love was instantaneous. her tiny little hand grasped my finger and she fit so perfectly in my arms; at that very moment, nothing else in the world mattered.

I named her Mia Angelica. I wanted a name that was short and sweet but exuded confidence and strong will. After seeing the world renowned soccer player, Mia Hamm on T.V. I knew that was the name I wanted.

When we brought her home from the hospital, she had what seemed like a never-ending bout with colic. There were many sleepless nights and endless tears (and that was just me). I thought I was supposed to have one of those “perfect” babies that you see on T.V.-you know, those shiny, smiley babies that never cry. I was in for such a rude awakending. She hated sleeping in her crib, always wanted to be held and insisted on falling asleep on my chest every time.

Mia hated to be away from me. I could not leave the room without her wailing like someone was pulling her toenails out with a pair of rusty pliers. She always wanted to be carried and had to have me at arm’s length at all times. I thought this phase would never end and that I would forever be joined at the hip with her.

But as time went on, she started to need me less and less…

She no longer needs me to kiss her goodbye when I drop her off at school in the monring (that just doesn’t happen in the 4th grade). She pours her own milk in her cereal bowl. She showers and gets ready for school by herself. When she talks with her best friend, Jade on the phone, she leaves the room. She doesn’t need me to hold her hand anymore when crossing the street. She closes the bathroom door now and can tie her own ponytail. She has her own opinions…her own thoughts…her own dreams. What happened to that little hand that grabbed my finger so tightly 10 years ago?

All this time, she had been letting go; without me noticing, she slowly unleashed her grip from my finger and also…my life.

Independence replaced me.

MIA TURNED 10

As I sit here tonight watching her sleep, I can’t help but feel sad. My little girl is growing up. Her little round face has metamorphasized overnight right in front of me. Her long body frame and her size 5 narrow feet show all the sign s of a beauty in the making. I no longer see the chubby, fat toes of a toddler or the sticky mouth of a first grader.

I wipe away my “happy tears” and ben dwon to feel her cheek and kiss her forehead…

and out of nowhere…

she reaches for my finger

and holds tight…

Today on Ankarlo Mornings: President Obama said yesterday we are not at war with Islam. Ankarlo says that might be true, but most terrorism around the world is attached to some form of Islam. So, let’s be real.

Mayor Phil Gordon appears on the show today. Ankarlo asks him why he went to Washington to get Sheriff Arpaio fired. Gordon says he didn’t.

Also today, education cuts causing teachers to lose their jobs in Mesa and Gilbert and we are entering the era of the subprime family.

In my 30 years of hosting radio and television programs I have received the same question no less than 10,000 times if I’ve heard it once: “Darrell, how can I get into radio.” And I usually take the time to tell them how I did it—which was to go to market 282 and work the overnight shift for nothing. The rest is hard work and determination. That’s the key. Right now the country is in turmoil and I’ll bet you’ve asked yourself “what else can I do?” What else can you do? What else can little old me—stupid as a fly do if this job suddenly stops? Sorry, but that’s what it sounds like. The easy answer first: make a list of things you’re good at and could earn money doing and start looking for a new gig or—and this is the harder one—believe in yourself. And, yes, this is much more difficult. Your first obstacle is getting past the BS you sell yourself about not enough schooling or training. Man that’s lame. Believe in yourself. I don’t know how many jobs I’ve won over the years because I owned the room when it was my turn to talk. Look at the cars around you—now look at the zombies driving them. Is this really the rest of your life? You were made for excellence. You were made to be better than all that.Today. Before the sunsets. Sit down with a pad of paper and an ink pen and dream. Whatever pops into your head gets written down. Read the list out loud from this morning until tomorrow morning and I’ll tell you what to do next. I’m not kidding. Be a winner or be zombie—your call. Repeat Past Mistakes?

Almost 60 percent of the home loans that were modified about a half a year ago were back into default territory as of February. That’s some bad news; it tells you that many of the Americans who took advantage of the financial opportunity still couldn’t see things through. But now we’re getting word from DC that there are fresh signs that President Obama’s $75 billion home mortgage bailouts—the program he announced in Mesa is actually seeing signs of relief to thousands of Valley homeowners who were either in mortgage default or prepared to go there. Financial counselors say for the first time in a long time they are actually showing people programs that will help them stay in their homes. I’m hoping my $75 billion will help a whole bunch of folks stay in their homes and grow their neighborhoods and do well enough that they can repay the taxes used for the program. But what really worries me is that the same offers of home modifications from a half year ago will be seen all over again. Time will tell.

This morning on Ankarlo Mornings: Ankarlo has had enough of the attacks on Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Mesa police chief George Gascon testified at a Congressional hearing yesterday about rule 287(g). This rule allows police officers to cross train with ICE to help arrest individuals in this country illegally. He takes Gascon and several other outspoken activists to task.

Also, Ankarlo brings in Laurie Thomas and Michael Cameron from the ASH line to help you quit smoking. After all, taxes have increased on cigarettes. Have you seen some of the new anti-smoking ads? Do they go over the line?

Several military members wives are turning to surrogacy to make some extra cash. But, the catch is you are paying for the insurance. Is that right?

New World Order

On Thursday, England’s Prime Minister finally used the phrase that has been quietly—secretly uttered for quite some time. Mr. Brown was explaining the enormous financial investments G-20 nations would be bringing to the table—though it should be noted that America is expected to drop about five times as much as the next country. Anyway, while the prime minister was stirring the crowd with his wonderful British accent and rhetoric that sounded like he may have actually had a clue he slipped. Looking at the crowd he said, “This is collective action…we have resolved that from today we will together manage the process of globalization…I think that with this a New World Order is Emerging.” (Hear Gordon Brown here) He then went on to explain how the poorest will be maintained by the richest (sounds vaguely familiar to a presidential candidates promises but this man was speaking to the globe about something that sounded mater-of-fact, not something coming but something here—a New World Order. Do a little reading and see what’s waiting. A single currency, that’s kid’s stuff. How about shared property ownership, which country’s laws are used and sovereignty-something a lot of Americans have died for—it vanishes. Think I’m fear-mongering? Give it time and watch as we’re slowly sold on acceptance, then we’ll see what’s waiting—and how very late we are to do anything about it.

Yesterday, we the fine folks at KTAR played a practical joke on the city of Phoenix by reporting that 350 new red light cameras were going up everywhere. As the day went on we told you the grace limit would go from 11 miles per hour to 5 over the limit, that people could buy passes allowing those with money to speed without getting a ticket and that x ray technology would let law enforcement see everything in your car—including you, if you know what I mean. Some listeners were angry at the stunt. Some, knew immediately and helped others believe it was true and even other people started mad then loved it once they were “in” on the joke. Friends, and you are our friends, if was just a joke—a crazy April Fools joke. With all the nasty news at every turn it was kind of nice to just goof around a little. What frightens me out of this lesson—the way things are heading in this country—every single item suggested in the joke is just one dumb politician away from reality.

By now you know yesterday’s stories about more speed cameras coming to the Valley with the help of stimulus money were an April Fool’s joke. 350 cameras aren’t coming to the Valley. The speed camera map was a map of Valley gas stations. X-Ray cameras for now are only in airports and along the border. It was just a joke.

Another radio station in Las Vegas said parents are going to have to pay $100 a month to send their kids to elementary school and $250 a month for high school.

Last year I bought a wonderful little house that overlooks some of the Valley’s most beautiful hills. The price had already dropped so I felt the money I would sink into it would be worth it so we took the plunge. I moved money from an IRA based on advice from my financial advisor. Boy, did I make a mistake! Nope, not on the house, I still love it! But my guru, who promised to hold our hands as we made some sophisticated moves has earned me the chance to hear from the Gestapo of the USA, better known as the IRS. Seems they want to put a levy on everything I own and everything I make. How nice. And my money-man—he hasn’t answered a single call. I’ve promised to be transparent with Ankarlo Mornings so I’ll share the good and the bad stuff with you and I’ll start with IRS agent Hyde who could easily get a job in a slasher psycho film if this government work doesn’t pan out. You think times are ugly for you right now, and for many they are—wait til you hear my bed time story. It’s best to hear it with Vodka in one hand and pills in the other. Okay, I’m kidding about that last part—sort of.

General Motors Chairman Rick Wagoner is no more. To most of us, this bit of news won’t change a thing—after all, we didn’t know the guy personally. 32 years with GM, he arranged one of the most far-reaching union agreements ever—an agreement that has saved the companies millions. He closed under-producing plants, trimmed the man- power by almost half and demanded that General Motors vehicles return to the quality oriented leaders of yesteryear. By most analysts accounts, the guy has done a decent job.So, why after three decades is he gone? Those who watch the automobile industry call it “political theatre.” As soon as the federal government put money into the mix and our president decided he should call the shots—even in private enterprise, Mr. Wagoner’s days were numbered.Grant it, GM has lost a lot of money in recent years–$82 billion in the last four alone but he saw the issues coming and had already made moves to fix them. And, if he has to go, shouldn’t the president fire a bunch of other leaders in private companies? After all, they’ve lost a lot of cash too and if this is all for political grand standing, wouldn’t it be really smart to appease all of us who wield pitchforks and torches by firing the whole lot?The analysts are right, this is political theatre and we’ve bought front-row tickets to watch and watch we will, as the federal government goes where it should never have gone in the first place.

Have you wondered why those idiots in DC picked the 90% figure to tax the AIG bonuses? New York Democrat Charley Rangel answers it this way, ““We figure the local and state governments will take care of the other 10 percent.” The actors on the Hill used the word “outrageous” to describe the bonus money but it also outrageous for elected leaders to create specialized taxes out of thin air. And, we should scream our lungs out that 73% of citizens support the move. I feel like I’m watching one of those horror flicks where the pretty trampy vixen gets set to walk into a dark room where the killer awaits. No matter how loud I scream at the screen, she still gets slashed. The bonuses are wrong but as I’ve explained too many times to count—politicians helped put the deal together so why aren’t they taxing themselves at 100 %? If you are part of the majority who supports this un-Constitutional and un-American activity you had better watch the small print in the deal—families making $250,000 including bonuses working at the main bailed out companies will legally robbed too—100% tax! But if you live overseas don’t worry about it, House members said they will leave their money alone. If you aren’t sickened by this just wait. Your day is coming.

Everyone loves a circus, with big elephants, whacky out-of-control donkeys and even the pooper scoopers make you laugh. On Wednesday we had it all when Congress staged its own BS circus with Barney Frank playing the ringmaster and Chris Dodd doing an unbelievable disappearing act. All while a guy appointed to fix the issues—with a buck a year as compensation got sawed in half more often than not. Folks, what we witnessed should cause us to riot. Literally! Frank passively suggested he doesn’t care what happens to AIG employees getting bonus money. In other words, so what if citizens hang ‘em. They deserve it. Maybe they do. But only after those liars in the congressional chambers learn their lessons first. Chris Dodd had to back track all day for blatantly lying about his role in creating the language that allowed the huge bonuses. Indeed, Dodd and other politicians created the AIG deal. Indeed they acted shocked at the hearing though Time Magazine reports many knew about it all weeks ago. Indeed, the legislators say they will create a tax to get the money back. I call BS on the whole charade. This is not a little bending of truth people; these are planned and executed lies aimed to keep your minds off the real criminals. Throw the whole lot of them into a jail cell with Bubba, maybe he can teach them something about honor codes—their mammas obviously failed.

Purple Cow

I attended a pretty cool strategy session on ways to grow a radio show. To make his point, the moderator told us about a cow, a purple cow. There, in the field, mixed with the plain old brown cows. Hey, wait, wasn’t that a candy when I was growing up? Or a chocolate drink? Anyway, I digress, where was I? Oh, that’s right, in a field of dung, dumbfounded and astonished by a fluke of nature. “Darrell, “ the boss man said, “If you want to number one in the ratings—forever, be purple.” Or something like that. If this were the TV show Kung Fu I would be asking the bald dude in the dress, “But, Master, what does he mean?” Since it’s real life I don’t need the Dali lama or a pipe of peyote–I understood—and the lesson applies to each of us. We will stop to look at, take pictures with and forever remember the purple cow. Because the bovine stands out amongst his peers. Do that if you’re looking for work and do that if your trying to keep the job you have—stand out in a distinct but positive way and you’ll move to the head of the pack. Meet Wild Freeborn.

She’s and adorable 8-year-old and she is a girl scout. I’m sure you have purchased girl scout cookies in the past. Aside from this year’s price increase and the suddenly shrinking box they are still pretty darn good cookies. Well, little Miss Freeborn’s dad works for a web hosting company and they decided to take their sales pitch to the internet. But, several parents thought this was unfair. Wow. This is the way to tear down the American Dream from an 8-year-old.

The best part: Wild is trying to raise money so her entire troop can go to summer camp. I guess some parents don’t even care about that. It’s not the kids that are the problem with America, it’s the parents.

Educate the Masses

President Barack Obama unveiled his administration’s education goals. As part of his plan he wants to ensure that it becomes unacceptable to drop out of high school. Obama would also like to reward teachers with merit pay. Both of those are lofty ideas, but shouldn’t we be looking at the fundamental problem of education. Why has it gotten so bad? Why do we no longer trust our education system? At the very least, it’s partly because we have dumbed everything done so much.

Obama even threw out some statistics in his speech.

In 8th grade math, we’ve fallen to 9th place. Singapore’s middle-schoolers outperform ours three to one. Just a third of our thirteen and fourteen-year olds can read as well as they should. And year after year, a stubborn gap persists between how well white students are doing compared to their African American and Latino classmates. The relative decline of American education is untenable for our economy, unsustainable for our democracy, and unacceptable for our children – and we cannot afford to let it continue.

How did we get here? It didn’t just happen overnight. It’s time to hit the reset button and start all over again. The President also plans on doubling federal education funding. For the record, Bush doubled education spending under his administration as well. This isn’t just a funding problem. We have a discipline problem. We have an education system that is too administration heavy. Throwing more money at the problem won’t fix it. Maybe the reset button will.

Losing the Fight

President Barack and VP Joe—guys, I know it’s your show and you’ll run it as you see fit but come on, give our military a break. They’ve had a difficult bunch of years. You both, along with Uncle Harry “I lost my mind years ago” Reid declared our devastating loss in Iraq more than a year or so ago and we see how wrong you were there. Now, both of you have told the world that we are losing in Afghanistan. Just stop it. Kurt Warner didn’t quit with two minutes left in the Super Bowl to remind fans we were losing. He knew the score and stepped up his game and a cheering stadium almost gave him a win. Would you two leaders of the free world notice that our military is mighty and can get any job done and invite those of us at home to scream our lungs out for them? Could ya? I realize you are playing the “we can’t win card” so you can beg the killer terrorist Taliban members to help stabilize things. But ask any negotiator and he will warn you never to bargain from a position of weakness. And never, ever give up.

No Need for God?

24% of Americans are either agnostic, atheist or deist, the most significant change in American religious practices in the history of this country. Church attendance; down. Denomination affiliation; down. The only increase in this study of 54,000 citizens was how many claim they have no need for religion. That’s huge for a country that was founded not just on religious freedom but on a majority of Christians who fled England to worship Christ without government review. Those wanting to argue my facts, first do what I did and read the original documents provided by the Library of Congress. Anyway, get this, atheists and agnostics have tripled since 1990. Tripled. That tells me a few things: 1, today’s church is failing at the task of displaying Christ’s message of love and redemption and the people with their butts still occupying pews don’t believe the message enough to openly demonstrate it. The only positive thing about today’s troubled times like high unemployment and a wrecked economy, those numbers will soon change for the better. Kind of funny how we have no need for God until the waters get a little choppy. My Marine son told me once, “I didn’t see any atheists as we walked into enemy fire in Fallujah.”

Morality in Government

A couple years ago scientists said they could harvest the cells without hurting the embryo—though they have yet to prove it. http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=embryos-survive-stem-cell-harvest On the other hand, some of the most important doctors of our time have told me that stem cells harvested from umbilical cords and taken from healthy living donors are as good as or better than those from embryos—little humans—created to be killed so the living can live better or longer or with fewer medical issues. Look, if my loved one could walk or fight off Parkinson’s with the help of stem cells I would run to sign up. When the doctor explained that another human, who had no say in the matter, would create the opportunity by paying the ultimate sacrifice I think I would be haunted every day for the rest of my life. Before I get to my meaty point—that will get me in a bit of trouble, my heartfelt disclaimer first: I am who I am because I had a few great teachers who believed in me and if we can pay football players 23 million bucks—we should pay great educators much more than they get. Okay, now for the trouble—hundreds of teachers and their union rallied yesterday for more financial resources–which got me to thinking. Classrooms in our country have some of the most liberal people any where at their lecterns, supported by the most liberal union in the nation. On the whole, the liberal agenda has always supported bigger government, higher taxes and freebies galore so in essence, many of the teachers and union reps asking for the cash on Wednesday helped to cause their financial strains in the first place—kind of a create a problem so others can solve it. This doesn’t apply to every teacher—many are saviors but I don’t think I’m wrong regarding the others.

Spending time with the kids

Last weekend I had the chance to spend some time with my two boys who are 7 and 3 years old. I work two jobs and have been pretty busy as of late so I rarely get to have any family time. My wife is a trooper holding down the fort when I’m working and taking care of 3 kids ( I have a daughter too). Last Saturday my little guy and I went to the movies and then out to lunch. He told me all about what he does when he’s in pre-school and what kind of toys he would like to get when he turns four later this month. I watched him look at me at times and smile and I just knew that he knew my attention was all towards him and we had a great time. I got to know a little bit more about my little guy and it made me very happy and also sad because as a father I should have known all that along time ago.

My oldest son and I went to a Phoenix Coyotes game that night and had a fun time, he too told me alot about school and what he was looking forward to getting for his birthday this week. He told me what he knew about hockey and what players were his favorite. He liked the fact that we were out with his dad’s co-workers and friends from work(Ankarlo team) and that he could eat all the junk food he wanted and not worry what mom would say. Later that night when I tucked him in bed, he looked at me and said thanks dad, this was one of my favorite days ever. Wow…Talk about trying to keep it together, I smiled at him and being choked up with what he said, I told him Your welcome son, thanks for making my night the best ever.

I know alot of us work and can’t always be there for our kids when we want to but that Saturday taught me to be more aware of how my kids are doing and to try to spend as much time as I can, even if it’s just 10 minutes to talk or let them show you what they did in school that day. I always want my kids to know that their father and mother always made time for them no matter what time of day or how tired we were.

Specifically, this will benefit Veteran’s returning from Iraq and Afghanistan that are having trouble keeping up with their bills.

I’m a little shocked at some of the angry emails streaming through my inbox lately. The vitriol is palpable, but thank the Lord they’re not aimed at me. Instead, some of you need a voice and believe I’ll provide it as you curse and scream at—ready for this—Kurt Warner! Yep, there’s outrage at the guy who just a few weeks ago could walk on water while hitting Jesus Himself with a 10 and out bullet. Why the anger? Because #13 now wants a two-year $23 million deal. Judy writes, “I’m struggling to keep my lights on and this guy is crying over millions. How dare he?” Hang on a second Judy; don’t we all try to negotiate more money, an extra day off or better opportunities? You bet we do. Sure, Warner is out of our league but since that’s the way things are done in the NFL, shouldn’t we be cheering him on—as one of our own? Pete writes, “…But now I can’t afford tickets.” Because Kurt wants more money? I don’t think so. If our top dog QB were gone, the NFL, Cardinals and other forces would figure out a way to keep ticket prices high so let’s at least use it to keep our hopes for another playoff alive and well. Now that’s hope I can believe in.

Yesterday, Ankarlo and Diane were talking about a story that shows conservative states are the ones with the most online porn viewing. In fact, Utah leads the nation. I don’t think this is a big deal, but I think it proves that most people are a at the very least, a little hypocritical.

So is Southwest airlines.

Just over a year ago, the airline kicked Kyla Ebbert off her flight because of her outfit. See:

Now, the same airline that kicked Kyla off has a plane with a bikini clad supermodel Bar Refaeli on the outside. Check it out:

Obviously, Miss Refaeli is beautiful. But, notice she is wearing less than Kyla. The bikini plane is part of a special promotion with Sports Illustrated. Southwest has done this with other special promotions before, but several complaints have hit the airline’s corporate headquaters with some saying the 737 is the same as “soft porn.” Give me a break. That’s just silly. If anything, complain about their double standard.

Some Iowa lawmakers are debating a new law that would punish parents for having porn in their houses. See, if a child finds it the parents could then be charged with child abuse. We are going crazy.

In Seattle, a 15-year old girl was beaten by police. She threw a shoe and the officer and he beat her up. Was it justified? Some of you say yes, some say no.

In the final hour, Ankarlo talks with Dr. Katherine Albrecht about RFID chips. Homeland Security director Janet Napolitano supports that REAL ID act. That would involve placing RFID chips in your driver’s licenses.

MY CAR - THE TRAVELING JUNK DRAWER

Yup. There is no denying it. My car is a traveling junk drawer.

The thing about it is…it’s not any ordinary, small junk drawer.

It’s an SUV, TAHOE-SIZED junk drawer.

BUT, I have an excuse.

I travel 36 miles to downtown everyday to drop off my kids and go to work and then I drive 36 miles back home in the evening. We spend A LOT of time in the car - which means A LOT of crap accumulates. I knew it was time for me to clean things out when everytime I took a turn, I felt all the junk slide from one side of the truck to the other.

I took inventory the other day when I attempted to just “pick up” a littel bit and here’s just a few things I came across.

-overdue libary book from the Phoenix library

-Barbie with no top

-Broken yo-yo

-DVDs with missing cases

-DVD cases with missing DVDs.

-Hair clips

-2 tubes of Hannah Montana lip gloss

-2 kick balls

-Half eaten bag of melted M&Ms

-Homework from 2 months ago

-1 empty Capri Sun

-2 quarters, 3 pennies and a nickel with hair

-Pack of Bubbilicious

-Jonas Brothers book

-School uniform top

-Crayons

-4 markers

-Girl Scout cookies in the box

-Pillow

-1 flip flop

-Headband

-Stickers from doctor’s office

-4 goldfish crackers

-Littlest Pet Shop toys

-Nintendo DS game

-Bookmarker

-Movie Tickets

-Farting slime (stick fingers in a bucket of slime and it makes fart noises)

Oh…I could go on and on, but you get the idea. It was enough to start my own little retail business. I constantly tell myself that I’m never going to let it get like that again! But I fail miserably every time.

I used to be envious of other people who have spotless cars that smell like crisp, new leather. No smudges on the windows or sticky residue on the seat. They were the ones who didn’t have to throw things under the seat or hide all the crap under a jacket when other people rode in the car with them.

I used to be envious.

But now I realize how lucky I really am.

Taking inventory of my car also forced me to take inventory of my life and how blessed I really am. I have transportation. I have beautiful, healthy children. I have a car of things that they love. It will only be a matter of time before those childhood items will be replaced with memories. It’s hard to accept that one day I won’t have my “junk drawer” to complain about. (It was hard enough getting rid of their infant car seats).

I sigh heavily as I hold the stuffed puppy in the hot pink tutu close to my heart. I place it back in my car…along with the pillow, the topless Barbie, stuffed monkey, Nintendo games, crayons, markers…

and yes…

even the farting slime.

WHILE IN CHICAGO, THE ABC RADIO NETWORK USED HIM AS SUBSTITUTE NEWS MAN. HIS NEWSCASTS FEATURED NEWS OF THE DAY, HUMOR, AND STORY TELLING IN A DISTINCT, UNIQUE TONE.

Back during the Super Bowl I made note of the special relationship between channel 12 sportscaster Bruce Cooper and his NFL son Marquis as they messed around in Tampa Bay. “The father and son have a great bond,” I thought. Now, we all wait to see if “Coop’s” boy has been taken from him—swallowed up by an ocean that has never played favorites. We get so darned busy with our jobs, struggles for bigger and better and general tasks of the day that our most cherished possessions, our families, often go wanting. I’m sure Coop has walked past a picture of Marquis, perhaps picked up one of his high school trophies from not-that-many years ago and reminisced. He is basking in the memories of a strong tie to his son. And though this story may very well have a sad ending—yours is still being written. Global New Deal

On Sunday, England’s Prime Minister Gordon Brown shocked more than the citizens of his country when he said, “universal action to prevent the crisis spreading, to stimulate the global economy and to help reduce the severity and length of the global recession.” The “action” he’s seeking is a global new deal—http://history.howstuffworks.com/american-history/new-deal.htm straight from the FDR playbook—on steroids. (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/columnists/guest_contributors/article5821821.ece) Brown’s remarks were in advance of this week’s meeting with President Obama and included a lot of shared history between the nations including wars against fascism, Hitler and a few other common interests. People here who already want open borders will no doubt love the concept but when will we get to the heart of the global new deal–how much it will cost America? http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article5822265.ece . And no doubt America would have to give up a lot! Since Obama’s belief that the well-off should pay for the poor, wouldn’t that translate to rich nations covering for poor ones in this proposed global economy—which leads me to believe this may be a new idea but it’s certainly not a deal. Not for us anyway.

Arena Gridlock

You ever noticed how we are most selfish behind the wheel? It’s more apparent after a sporting event than any other time. I was out in Glendale the other night trying to leave the Westgate City Center after a Coyotes game and it was a nightmare.

When did we become this selfish? People were literally running out of the arena to get to their cars in order to avoid the gridlock. Of course, if you ever watch a game on TV you know this is the reason the fans leave early if there is no chance their team will win. Been there, done that. If it gets any worse I just might stop attending games all together.

Today on Ankarlo Mornings: Diane starts off the show recounting her morning. She was trying to get on the 51, but another car wouldn’t let her in the lane. Then, Starbucks forgot to put egg on her egg sandwich. Then she wanted a refund and they forgot to give her the sales tax back. What the heck? To top it all off, she was running around since she was late in her very high heels. Now, that’s a morning.

Ankarlo also breaks down Obama’s budget and tax hikes. Yes, they are a tax hike and yes, this is the biggest budget in the nation’s history. But, it must be done because it’s an emergency.

Obama speaks live in the course of the show about his troop withdrawal plan by 2010.

Also, UConn Men’s Basketball coach Jim Calhoun yelled at a reporter when he asked him how much money he makes. But, should coaches make $1.6 million at the college level? What’s the difference between Calhoun and Kurt Warner wanting $14 million a season?

Bogus Budget

Some surprising news on the budget front: Looks like there is some creativity in DC after all. Hidden in the fine print:

All persons living on welfare for more than a month will be kicked off the rosters. Anyone using food stamps to buy brand name products or deserts will lose all access. Moving up the chain, anyone making up to $35,000 a year must now give at least $20,000 to charity or be taxed at a rate of 45%. Married couples making up to $95,000 must agree to volunteer at least 25 hours per week or lose housing deductions and face a tax rate of 43%. Lost benefits for the poor and higher taxes for the working and middle class—huge hikes–all right there in the budget. 45% income tax rate if you make 95 thousand. Wow! How many of you feel this is not right—completely unfair and plan to call congress? Before you do–a confession. I made that stuff up. Just wondering why you would be mad about those changes and not the unfair attacks on Americans who have worked hard and now make enough money to live or hire other people? By the way, their tax hike, after adjustments will be about 42% and people are not outraged? This is called class warfare and it will destroy us. And now you know what’s wrong with America!

According the USBP, early this morning agents assigned near the Ajo station witnessed an SUV traveling at a high rate of speed with it’s lights out. Agents began pursuing the vehicle and placed a tire deflation device on the road. That didn’t stop the SUV, it continued driving on flat tires. Obviously, the SUV was found, but the driver fled into the desert. He didn’t even try to conceal the 1,958 pounds of marijuana packed into 118 bundles in the back of the car. Just another day down at the border. The total street value: $1.6 million.

Another item of note: Mexican President Felipe Calderon has ordered 5,000 additional troops to Ciudad Juarez to continue the war against the cartels. Unofficial estimates say over 900 people have been killed this year alone in Mexico. The pictures above are the reasons for the brutal violence throughout Mexico that is slowly creeping into the U.S. I guess there are plenty of buyers on this side of the border.

Today on Ankarlo Mornings: ACORN organizers in Baltimore cut the padlock off a foreclosed home, moved the previous owner back in and was proud of it. An ACORN director basically added that everyone has a right to stay in their home even if they don’t pay their bills. Ankarlo wonders when that became a right?

Mexico has a growing drug violence problem. And it’s coming into the US. Ankarlo has a few comments…
