How much is Brandon Webb worth?

Here’s what went down Thursday on G&A…

Half show following Diamondbacks’ baseball this afternoon on KTAR.

Brandon Webb continues to roll, improving to 8-0 following his dominant effort over Philly. Webby is on the verge of signing a monster extension with the Snakes. G&A debated how much the best pitcher in baseball is worth. Gambo feels Webb is worth the big money, but only in a max 5-year deal while he is still in his prime. Ash agrees. Both marvel at the way Webb efficiently and effectively handles his business on the mound.

Then there’s Eric Byrnes. The D-Backs’ $10 million/year left fielder is hitting .232 following his 0-5 this afternoon while Carlos Quentin is tearing up American League pitching. One person suggested Eric Byrnes is the baseball version of Boris Diaw. G&A discussed if Josh Byrnes may have made a mistake in re-signing Byrnes in his contract year. Most calls were split.

Kobe Bryant is your 2007-08 Most Valuable Player. G&A think Chris Paul may be more deserving, but are fine with Kobe winning his first MVP. Gambo thinks winning an MVP puts Bryant in an elite class of NBA all-time greats.

The Spurs are against the ropes and G&A couldn’t be happier. They previewed tonight’s game against the Hornets in San Antonio. Both agree a loss tonight would signal the end of an amazing run for the defending champions.

Tomorrow: We’re on after D-Backs-Cubs’ baseball from Wrigley Field. We’ll be joined by Brandon Webb & ESPN NBA analyst Tim Legler.

Stein gets a date!

Here’s what went down Wednesday on G&A:

Stein Gets a Date! All-around good guy and station employee Eric Stein has a date next weekend and Gambo hooked him up with a pair of primo Diamondbacks’ tickets. G&A debate the idea of putting them on the kiss-cam. Not much else they can do.

Doll Gate. White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen is in hot water again over the controversy surrounding the questionable “slump-buster” statue that he erected in the Sox club house. Now a female reporter in Chicago is offended by Guillen’s actions and let her case be known. Gambo doesn’t feel this is a big deal and the reporter needs to lighten up.

Logjam. The Diamondbacks are weighing options for Chad Tracy, who is expected to come off the disabled list shortly. Ash would like to see BoMel showcase Tracy and try to deal him before the deadline. Gambo thinks third base is Mark Reynolds’ to lose.

Ten-time All Star Clyde Drexler, member of the Basketball Hall of Fame, and 1995 World Champion guard with the Houston Rockets discussed his amazing career and winning a gold medal with the “Dream Team” in the 1992 Olympics. Drexler averaged more than 20 points per game in his 15-year career. He is in town participating in the Phoenix Celebrity Golf Classic with proceeds benefitting the Foundation for Blind Children.

The “Big Unit” Randy Johnson checked in to discuss his victory over the Phillies Wednesday night at Chase Field. Johnson struck out six in 6 innings while notching his 286th career win.

Thursday: We’ll be on after the Phillies-Diamondbacks matinee at Chase Field.

The Suns’ coaching search is imminent

Here’s what went down Tuesday on G&A…

Right Fit. The Suns’ new coaching search is on the verge of starting. Gambo thinks the Suns should break up the team if they’re going to hire an up-and coming assistant coach. He thinks the Suns won’t start the process until the “D’Antoni Domino” falls. G&A agree that they don’t want to see a college coach hired. Gambo thinks D’Antoni would have an extended leash if the Knicks hired him since they’ve been so brutal in recent years.

Silencing the Spurs. The Hornets beat the Spurs to take a convincing 2-0 lead in the series. The Spurs look old and out-of-sorts at both ends of the court. Gambo wonders if the Hornets are becoming the NBA’s new darling. Ash wonders if MVP Kobe can hang with CP3 should both teams advance to the Western Conference Finals.

Ozzie’s Outburst. The White Sox manager is in hot water again after a sexist statue appeared in Chicago’s clubhouse in hopes of breaking his team out of a recent hitting slump.

Our ESPN baseball insider Tim Kurkjian checked in to discuss the suddenly slumping Diamondbacks, Max Sherzer’s starting debut last night against the Phillies, the latest Ozzie Guillen outburst, and the never-ending Roger Clemens saga.

More Problems. Roger Clemens is in the news, again! Ash doesn’t care about Clemens’ extra-marital affairs, but does care that he cheated the game by allegedly using steroids. The guys debate what’s worse. Gambo thinks Clemens should have just backed down a while back and not dragged himself and his family thru the mud even more.

Former Ohio State star quarterback Art Schlichter was the 4th overall pick by the Baltimore Colts in the 1982 draft but saw his life unravel due to a gambling addiction that cost him his wife, millions of dollars, and years in prison. He is now touring the country speaking on behalf of Gambling Prevention Awareness-a non-profit organization he founded.

Athletes in Jail. Art Schlichter was put away for quite some time for his gambling addiction. Does time heal all wounds for athletes who serve extensive jail time? How will we remember Mike Vick, Rae Carruth, Luis Sharpe, and others who have spent time in jail 20 years from now? G&A discussed and took calls.

Tomorrow: Dbacks’ skipper Bob Melvin and ASU AD Lisa Love

Audio: Former No. 4 overall NFL draft pick Art Schlichter

Former No. 4 overall NFL draft pick Art Schlichter:

A must-hear interview between Gambo & Ash and Art Schlichter: The former No. 4 overall NFL draft pick in 1982 not only lost his starter’s role to Baltimore quarterback Mike Pagel, but also his career and fortunes due to a troublesome gambling addiction. Schlichter’s addiction led him into a life a debt and prison time. Schlichter has spent more than 10 years behind bars, but was recently released in 2006 where he currently resides with his mother in Indiana.

Where will Mike D’Antoni land next year?

Here’s what went down Monday on G&A…

Coach Speak, The Suns have given permission to Mike D’Antoni to pursue other coaching options. Gambo thinks D’Antoni will end up in New York because they can offer him the big-money and knows Mike can parlay his new gig into a monster contract elsewhere. Ash thinks the Suns roster needs a tweaking-including a lock-down 2-guard. Gambo says Jeff Van Gundy and Avery Johnson will not be options as D’Antoni’s replacement.

Drinking & Boating. Bears running back Cedric Benson is the latest professional athlete to get into hot water. Gambo wonders if we should keep a tracker each day of the athletes busted. G&A agree it’s time for the Bears to part ways with the underachieving Benson.

Tragedy at the Track. Eight Belles had to be euthanized on the track following the Kentucky Derby Saturday when both front ankles were broken beyond repair. NBC opted not to show it during the telecast, now PETA is involved. Ash feels it was the right, albeit, tough decision. Gambo thinks this is an even bigger story because it happened at the Kentucky Derby

We were joined by Dominique Rogers-Cromartie. The Cards first-round pick in this year’s draft checked in to discuss his first mini-camp which wrapped up yesterday and his expectations going into his rookie season with the Red Birds.

Randall McDaniel joined the guys. The former Agua Fria High, ASU, and NFL star was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame last week. McDaniel made 12 Pro Bowls and was named to the All-Pro team nine times in his 13-year career with the Vikings and Bucs following his time in Tempe.

Tomorrow: 2-time Cy Young Award winner Bret Saberhagen, ESPN baseball insider Tim Kurkjian, and the amazing story of Art Schlichter

Keep on guessing

Here’s what went down Friday on G&A

* The Suns are going to keep us guessing over the weekend on the status of Mike D’Antoni. The current head coach met with Robert Sarver and Steve Kerr in downtown Phoenix for lunch before leaving without comment. G&A discussed his options and what might be next if D’Antoni leaves/gets fired. We took calls. In a side note, the Mavs interviewed Rick Carlisle about their head coaching vacancy.

* Two small northwest colleges are making headlines when a Western Oregon player tore her ACL rounding first after hitting a homerun. In a touching turn of events, two Central Washington infielders picked her up and carried her around the bases. Gambo thinks this is lay-up for an ESPY Award this year. G&A discussed if this would happen in a men’s collegiate sporting event. Gambo thinks it is honorable, but he wouldn’t do it himself.

* Gambo’s 13-year old daughter, and up-and-coming athlete, Kaylee joined the guys and agreed with her father. She wouldn’t help, either.

* ASU AD Lisa Love checked in for her weekly segment. She discussed ASU’s decision to drop their cheer program and the recent ground-breaking for a much-needed on-campus basketball facility.

* Diamondbacks’ skipper Bob Melvin joined the guys. BoMel previewed Max Sherzer’s much-anticipated major league starting debut Monday against the Phillies and this weekend’s big showdown against Mets at Chase Field.

* David Stern discretely fined Celtics’ swingman Paul Pierce $25,000 for flashing a gang sign in a recent game against the Hawks. G&A feel Stern may have made a mistake for making the fine public and further exposing these gangs. We took calls. Most agreed with Stern’s decision and thinks the NBA needs to be extremely careful with their image-especially after the All-Star fiasco last year in Vegas.
