Too much clutter

Here’s what went down Wednesday on G&A

Choke Job - The U.S. women’s gymnastics team missed a chance at gold when team leader Alicia Sacramone first fell off the beam, then stepped out of bounds during her floor exercise allowing China to take home the gold. G&A hate to see pressure get to any U.S. athlete - especially someone as likeable as Sacramone. The guys feel sadder for her than upset at her. Both agree they would feel less pity for an American millionaire Olympian who blew a similar opportunity.

Rockies starting 2nd baseman Clint Barmes joined the guys this afternoon. Barmes had two hits and scored a run in last night’s loss to the D-backs. He’s hitting .300 with a team high four triples for Colorado.

D-backs skipper Bob Melvin checked to discuss the new-look roster with slugger Adam Dunn.

Too Much Clutter - With the acquisition of Dunn, the club is loaded with corner outfielders and infielders. Bob Melvin told G&A it’s highly unlikely Mark Reynolds will be moved to second base in place of the injured Orlando Hudson. Gambo thinks Randy Johnson has earned the #3 spot in the possible post-season rotation behind Webb and Haren.

Nobody More Dominant? - Ash thinks Michael Phelps could go down as the most dominant athlete in history. Gambo agrees, saying Phelps has elevated the sport of swimming and drawn great attention on a worldwide stage. We took calls. Some suggested Pete Sampras, Lance Armstrong, Tiger Woods, Wayne Gretzky, Michael Jordan and others. Ash can’t see a large group of kids flocking to a nearby pool trying to be the next Michael Phelps. Gambo couldn’t disagree more.

The newest Arizona Diamondback Adam Dunn checked in to share his thoughts on Monday’s trade from the Reds. Dunn was on base 3 times with a double and two walks in last night’s win over the Rockies.

Tomorrow: short show after day baseball at Coors Field

  1. 1 Rieger

I caught the end of the discussion about Michael Phelps yesterday and unfortunately my phone was dead and I could not call in. I think everyone has overlooked the greatest wrestler ever, Dan Gable. If you add up Gable’s high school, college, international, and Olympic careers his total record is 182-1. His only loss was durning the finals of the NCAA tournement his senior year. Gable did not even give up a point in the ‘72 Olympics. After that he retired and went on the coach Iowa wrestling, and is responsible for their wrestling dynasty, and producing other Olympic metalist from the program. I think that covers everything that wa talked about, dominence and impact on his sport as a whole.
