Here’s what went down Friday on G&A
Abbreviated show today before Diamondbacks’ baseball in Houston.
Who’s Under Center? - Ken Whisenhunt is starting Kurt Warner tomorrow night in Kansas City in the Red Birds’ second pre-season game. Gambo has no problem with this and Ash thinks Warner has really separated himself from incumbent Matt Leinart in training camp. Gambo would like to see Leinart get as many 1st-team reps as possible, but understands having a crisp Kurt Warner, if Leinart falters, is equally important. Gambo still thinks Leinart can be a very good NFL quarterback in time. Both agree the Cards may not have total faith in Leinart.
Going for the Gold - Nastia Luikin took home the gold edging out fellow American Shawn Johnson in Beijing. Luikin was born in Russia. Many sponsors were hoping Johnson would take home the gold so they could “build” her as the next Mary Lou Retton or Kerri Strug. Gambo doesn’t feel a silver medal will be “sexy” enough to attract corporate America. Ash doesn’t think anyone will remember Luikin when the Games end.
Former Diamondback, now closer for the Astros Jose Valverde checked in to discuss the off-season trade and his first year in Houston. “Papa Grande” is 5-3 with a 4.23 ERA and 30 saves this season. He said he was moderately surprised at the trade that sent Chad Qualls and Chris Burke to Phoenix.
Against the Ropes - One sport where the U.S. is no longer dominating is boxing. The guys discussed why the once-proud Olympic boxing team has taken such a hit (no pun intended) in recent years after George Foreman, Muhammad Ali, Roy Jones JR, and others experienced so much success. Gambo thinks the scoring system really hurts the Americans chances.
