Here’s what went down Thursday on G&A
The Season is Here! - College football starts this afternoon and G&A are stoked. Both feel this could be a break-thru year for Mike Stoops and the Arizona Wildcats - especially with a softer non-conference schedule and plenty of juice on offense. G&A know this should be another entertaining, roller-coaster-ride of a season starting tonight at stadiums around the country.
The List - Yahoo sports recently polled the “worst sports cities” and Phoenix came in at number 4. 82 seasons of pro sports (Cards, Suns, D-backs, Coyotes) in The Valley has created but one championship. The ratings were based on the number of pro teams in each market and the number of titles they’ve won combined with how many years they’ve been in existence. Got it? Gambo likes how the list was created. Ash doesn’t. We took calls.
ASU Athletic Director Lisa Love checked in to preview the Devils’ fall sports schedule and discuss Saturday’s football season opener at Sun Devil Stadium against NAU.
Backing the Pac(Man) - Adam, don’t call me “Pacman,” Jones was re-instated to play in the first regular season game with the Dallas Cowboys. The guys debated if Jones will (finally) stay out of trouble. Gambo wonders why Pacman has been hanging out with teammate and, fellow troublemaker, Tank Johnson.
The man who invented instant replay, Tony Verna, joined the show on the day Major League Baseball implemented their new rule on homeruns. Verna has a new book out called Instant Replay: The Day That Changed Sports Forever.
Fair or Foul? - Instant replay is about to make its’ way into Major League Baseball. Re-play, as of now, will only affect homerun calls. Gambo doesn’t believe this will last very long as more on-field controversy continues to litter the game. Ash is hopeful they never use re-play to call balls and strikes. We took calls.
Former Texas Longhorn star, now Bronco starting running back Selvin Young previewed Denver’s season in the AFC West and their final pre-season game tomorrow against the Cardinals in Glendale.
The guys were joined by Director of USA Basketball and former Phoenix Sun owner Jerry Colangelo. He shared his process of putting the team together over the past three years and his experiences in Beijing where Team USA won the gold medal.
We were joined by Team USA volleyball player Ryan Millar who helped the U.S. win Olympic gold over the weekend. The 6’7’’ middle blocker will discuss upsetting Brazil to win their first gold in 20 years just days after tragedy struck-head coach Hugh McCutheon’s father-in-law who was stabbed to death in Beijing.
Friday: Dave Burns in for the vacationing Ash
Guests: Dbacks’ skipper Bob Melvin, Dodger outfielder Andre Ethier, and sports handicapper Brandon Lang
