Here’s what went down Tuesday on G&A
Gambo was off. Ash flew solo.
The Webb Brandon Weaves - D-backs’ ace Brandon Webb is struggling and it couldn’t come at a worse time with the Snakes in the midst of the post-season chase with the Dodgers and fast-charging Rockies. Ash feels Webby is blowing his chance for a second Cy Young, but doesn’t really care. He would rather see him get right because the Cy Young pales in comparison to the possible bigger picture - a World Series title. That being said, Ash still feels Webb will win the Cy Young. Ash wonders if BoMel might look to tinker the rotation to get him a couple extra days rest down the stretch.
The Decision Is In - The Cardinals have named a starting quarterback and his name is Kurt Warner. Ash thinks, with the Cards’ brutal schedule, that Sunday is a must-win for Ken Whisenhunt and the Red Birds in San Francisco. Ash likes the move because it shows that the Cards are serious about winning now, not later. Ash wonders if the fans will be calling for Leinart if Warner struggles early like Leinart did last season. We took calls.
Ash caught up with ESPN baseball insider Tim Kurkjian who previewed the stretch run as we enter the final month of regular season play. Kurkjian discussed Brandon Webb’s recent slump, C.C. Sabathia’s controversial near no-hitter, and how he feels the wild NL West will play out over the final month.
ASU senior wide receiver Mike Jones joined Ash this afternoon. Jones caught six passes for game-high 162 yards in Saturday’s 30-13 season-opening victory over NAU at Sun Devil Stadium. He was happy with the efficiency of the first-team offense against the ‘Jacks.
Our ESPN college football analyst Mark May shared his thoughts on the opening weekend including Alabama’s beat down of previously 9th-ranked Clemson in Atlanta, the disaster that is the Big East, Beanie Wells’ mysterious foot injury, and UCLA’s upset of Tennessee last night in Los Angles.
Cause for Concern? - The Sun Devils opened their season with a 30-13 win over outmanned NAU Saturday night in Tempe. Ash thought Rudy Carpenter and his talented group of receivers played as advertised, but wonders if there’s reason for concern with the run game. Ash liked the way ASU strung together some long drives against the ‘Jacks and put the game out of reach before the reserves entered in the third quarter. Ash warned Sun Devil fans not to overlook Stanford this weekend.
Tomorrow: Short show after day baseball at Chase Field. Gambo returns!
