Here’s what went down Friday on G&A

K-Rod Shopping? - Angels’ closer Francisco Rodriguez tied Bobby Thigpen for the single-season all-time saves record last night with #57.  The Halos have already said they aren’t planning to re-sign the free-agent-to-be this off-season.  Gambo thinks Josh Byrnes would be wise to look into spending some money to bring in a reliable closer.  He also doesn’t feel the younger D-backs (Chris Young, Justin Upton, etc.) have developed and the blame falls on the coaching staff.  Ash would like to see the team take more of a “tough love” approach.  Both agree the Snakes should make some sort of free-agent splash or trade this off-season.  We took calls.

Victory for USC? - Ohio State Jim Tressel announced star running back Beanie Wells is listed as doubtful.  USC is a 12-point home favorite.  Ash thinks the Trojans will roll by two touchdowns.  Gambo thinks it will be a close game and people are underestimating the talented Buckeyes.  That being said, Gambo likes the Trojans to win and put a big dent in the Buckeyes’ BCS title hopes.  Both agree the Big 10 is down this season.

D-backs’ skipper Bob Melvin checked in to discuss the mental state of his club following the last road trip and how he plans on using his taxed bullpen over the final few weeks of the regular season.

Lots of Issues - Vince Young’s therapist announced today that the Titans’ quarterback was suicidal and carrying an unloaded gun earlier in the week.  Young refuted reports that he is having “issues” and just needed some “time away” from football.  G&A continue to agree there is more to this story than is what being reported-at least not yet.

World-renowned sports handicapper Brandon Lang took calls and shared his thoughts on the upcoming slate of weekend games in both college and the NFL.  Lang was a perfect 9-0 picking games last week.

Our ESPN NFL analyst Mark Schlereth checks in for his weekly segment to discuss the Cards’ season-opening opening win over the 49ers in San Francisco and previewed the Red Birds’ home opener Sunday against Miami.  He also shared his thoughts on Brett Favre’s successful debut with the Jets, the impact of Shawne Merriman’s loss in San Diego, and everything else making headlines around the National Football League.
