Changing of the guard

Here’s what went down Monday on G&A…

Changing of the Guard - Edgerrin James is out and Tim Hightower is in as starting tailback for the now 5-3 Cardinals following Sunday’s win over the Rams. G&A agree Whiz’s decision to sit Edge is very telling and doesn’t want to hear Edge’s reasoning why he isn’t playing (chastised coaching staff). Same for Matt Leinart, who didn’t take a single snap, even late in the 4th-quarter with the game already decided. Both feel Hightower gives the Red Birds another big-play threat to an already-loaded offense. The rookie has proven he can handle everything, including picking up blitzes. Gambo thinks the NFC West is over - Ash isn’t so sure. We took calls.

New #1 - Texas Tech knocked off top-ranked Texas Saturday night in Lubbock and in the process, leap-frogged idle Penn State in the BCS standings. Alabama is the new #1. Gambo thinks if Penn State wins out they deserve a shot at the title and wonders how USC beats Washington 56-0 and moved DOWN two spots. G&A agree Tech’s dramatic win was one of the better college football games they’ve ever seen. Ash feels Tech’s win over UT is more impressive than anything Penn State has done or will do the remainder of the year. Gambo says the difference in Texas Tech this season is their much-improved defense, which complements Mike Leach’s lethal spread offense. Both know the BCS still has some sorting out to do before the end of the season.

Tuesday: We have a short show before Suns basketball in New Jersey. We’ll be joined by ESPN baseball insider Tim Kurkjian and college football analyst Mark May.
