Goodbye Randy?

Here’s what went down Thursday on G&A

Preaching Patience - The Suns got drilled by the Rockets last night at U.S. Airways Center in a game filled with almost everything-including a brawl. Ash was happy to see the Suns take a stand for Steve Nash as the fight unfolded, and loves the toughness Matt Barnes brings to the floor. Gambo is willing to give this team time under Terry Porter and his new system. The guys agree Leandro Barbosa is struggling-especially with his ailing mother back in Brazil.

Saying Goodbye? - Randy Johnson filed for free agency today, meaning his renewed career in Arizona could be over. Ash thinks Johnson and his agents are putting the onus on the D-backs for not getting a deal done with the Snakes, and feels there’s really no way he will return on ’09. Gambo knows Unit can still pitch, but believes unless he can take a hometown discount he should pitch elsewhere. Gambo reported negotiations are continuing between the two parties. Doesn’t Johnson owe it to the fans here to take a “cheaper” deal? We took calls.

Oregon head football coach Mike Bellotti discussed the Ducks showdown with UofA Saturday in Eugene. Bellotti broke down the Cats’ high-powered offense and what he expects to see from Mike Stoops’ defense. The Ducks come in 7-3 (5-2 in the Pac-10) while the Wildcats sit at 4-2 in the Pac and 6-3 overall.

Our ESPN NBA analyst Tim Legler shared his thoughts on last night’s Rockets-Suns scuffle-marred game at U.S. Airways Center, the Celtics last-second win over previously unbeaten Atlanta last night in Boston, the red-hot Lakers, and everything else making headlines around the league.

Eye on NY? - Mike D’Antoni quietly has the Knicks off to a 5-3 start and has caught national attention for his hard-lined stance on Eddy Curry and Stephon Marbury. He has New York playing his style (132 points in the win Wednesday night over Memphis). G&A are happy the well-liked D’Antoni is doing well, but wonder how long he can keep winning without top-notch talent like he had here. We took calls-most of which were happy the Coach Mike is experiencing early-season success.

Friday we’ll be joined by ESPN NFL analyst Mark Schlereth and sports handicapper Brandon Lang.
