Here’s what went down Wednesday on G&A
Ash was off, Gambo flew solo.
Sports 620 KTAR reporter Johnny V checked in from Cards’ headquarters to discuss the latest on Anquan Boldin’s pulled hamstring. V. said the team is hopeful their new travel schedule (leaving for trip the day before, not two) will reverse their east coast fortunes. Boldin sat out practice again today.
Jagod-Edge - Boston College fired head football coach Jeff Jagodinski after he interviewed for the same vacancy with the New York Jets. B.C. athletic director Gene DiFillipo promised the school would take action if Jagodinski interviewed with the NFL team which he did on Tuesday. Gambo applauds DiFillipo for taking a stand and not wavering on his initial stance against Coach Jags - especially since he had three years left on his deal with the school. Why doesn’t anyone honor their contract even when they are “underpaid” (like Brandon Webb)? There isn’t even a guarantee that Jagodinski will land with the Jets. We took calls.
We caught up with ASU Senior Associate Athletic Director Don Bocchi who discussed the latest news around Tempe, including BYU dropping the Devils from their football schedule next season so they can play Oklahoma in Dallas.
Mission Impossible - Gambo reported that ASU will replace BYU with a home date against Louisiana-Monroe next season. He feels the Cougars put the Devils in a tough spot even though they will owe ASU a “favor” as Bocchi told Gambo earlier in the day.
Westwood High grad and former New Mexico head hoops coach Ritchie McKay joined the show. He is now at Liberty and coaching one of the nation’s rising stars, freshman Seth Curry, younger brother of Davidson standout, Stephen Curry.
Pacers starting point guard and former Texas Longhorn T.J. Ford previewed tonight’s game against the Suns at U.S. Airways Center. He said he is anxious to match-up with Steve Nash. Ford is averaging 14 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds a game this season.
Game Over - The Pacman Jones’ experiment is over in Dallas. The Cowboys released the troubled cornerback this afternoon. Gambo says it’s about time. He thinks Jerry Jones’ next step should be to show Terrell Owens the door - even if they have to eat his contract to do it. If these two headaches were eliminated from the roster, would they be a playoff team this season? Gambo seems to think so. Same goes for Jeremy Shockey with the Saints and Chad Johnson with the Bengals. We took calls.
Thursday we’ll be joined by Panthers’ linebacker Thomas Davis, Titans assistant head coach Dave McGinnis, and ESPN NBA analyst Tim Legler.
