Here’s what went down Monday on G&A…
Renewed Hope - The Suns got a big win over the mighty Lakers yesterday at U.S. Airways Center without Steve Nash and, obviously, Amare Stoudemire. Gambo called it, without question, the most complete win of the year and feels this team can make some noise in the post-season if they continue to play with the passion they displayed against LA. Ash firmly believes Shaq (45 points Friday, 33 yesterday) has found his groove. He pointed out The Daddy has three straight games against his former clubs (Lakers, Magic, Heat). G&A agree Matt Barnes was huge and the Suns showed true-grit in withstanding Kobe and the Lakers’ third quarter run. Gambo reported the Suns are in on free-agents Joe Smith - his daughter lives in Arizona, Drew Gooden, and Stromile Swift. He thinks a new player could be added Wednesday.
We caught up with Suns’ forward Matt Barnes who scored a season-high 26 points and added 10 rebounds, 7 assists, and 3 steals in yesterday’s 118-111 upset win over the Lakers at U.S. Airways Center. He knows the Suns still have a long way to go with a tough stretch ahead. Suns play the Magic in Orlando tomorrow night.
No Kurt-ousy? - Kurt Warner is still a free-agent and he visited with 49er officials today in the Bay Area. Gambo is still confident the Red Birds will get a deal done, even if the Niners drive the price up, although Warner’s rep says “feelings have been hurt” when dealing with the Cards this offseason. Ash is concerned Warner may bolt - especially since the 49ers have his ear, person-to-person, no less. The Broncos upset their franchise quarterback Jay Cutler over the weekend by dangling his name in trade rumors - specifically for Matt Cassel who was eventually dealt to the Chiefs. Cutler is butt-hurt and refusing to meet with Bronco officials. G&A agree priority number one is re-signing Warner. A decision could come Tuesday. The guys would be open to the Cards making a run at Cutler IF Warner lands in San Fran. Would you?
The newest member of the Houston Texans, Antonio Smith, joined us. The former Cardinal defensive end signed a 5-year, $35 million deal with Houston Saturday. He said he will miss his now former teammates in Arizona, but is looking forward to playing with Mario Williams and the other young Texan stars like Steve Slaton and Andre Johnson.
Short show tomorrow before Suns’ basketball in Orlando.
