Here’s what went down Friday on G&A
Setting Sun - The Suns suffered a big loss Thursday night, falling by 20 to the Blazers. The season is running out on Alvin Gentry and his slimming playoff hopes. Gambo wouldn’t mind seeing Phoenix make the playoffs, but thinks a slim chance at the lottery and a chance to re-shuffle the roster is a better way to go. The guys agree the playoffs won’t happen. Who would you like to see stay and who go? John feels any two of these three won’t be back (STAT, Nash, Shaq). We took calls.
Trading Places - Billy Gillespie is out as head coach at Kentucky. Ash thinks Florida head coach Billy Donovan is a perfect fit in Lexington. So now that the first domino has fallen-what does this mean for the UofA Wildcats? Gambo is hearing Rick Pitino is at the top of the list. Ash thinks there is maybe no bigger name in college basketball than Pitino and his system would pull plenty of big-time talent to Tucson. Gambo thinks Pitino could rule the Pac-10 in a short amount of time. Can you see Ricky P leaving The Bluegrass State for the Old Pueblo? We took calls.
Our March Madness analyst Bill Frieder shared his thoughts on Thursday night’s Sweet 16 matchups and what might happen later Friday and this weekend as the field is paired down to four, as well as Billy Gillespie out at Kentucky and the future of Rick Pitino at Louisville. “Frieds” is hearing Pitino could end up in the Old Pueblo, but doesn’t see that happening.
Field(s) of Dreams - Lavance Fields has his Pitt Panthers in the Elite 8 where they will play Villanova Saturday. Gambo thinks the gritty point guard from New York is one of the unsung heroes in this tourney. The Panthers are winning ugly. Ash says Fields reminds him of former UCONN guard Khalid El-Amin. Short, pudgy, and not afraid to step up and take a big shot when needed. The guys discussed who are the most underrated player in March Madness-2009. We took calls.
Center of Attention - Hasheem Thabeet is taking the tournament by storm and helped UCONN dispatch Purdue last night with 15 points, 15 boards and 4 blocks. G&A are amazed at his skill level and overall athleticism. Ash thinks his draft status has soared and Gambo feels the junior will fair better than some of the other big men who have entered the draft recently and will likely be a top 5 pick this summer if he leaves - which is expected.
Duke Disaster - For the sixth consecutive year, Duke was defeated by a lower seed in the tourney. G&A agree Duke looks slow and over-matched when pitted against more athletic teams like they were last night against Villanova. Ash thinks Coach K needs to recruit more of the one-and-done players. Is this the beginning of the end for the Dukies? We took calls.
Good Cop, Bad Cop? - .Texans running back Ryan Moats was pulled over in Plano, Texas as he was rushing to the hospital to be with his dying mother-in-law. A Plano officer pulled him over in the parking lot of the hospital for running a red light and didn’t allow him to enter the hospital -harassing him during the process when Moats was searching for his insurance. His mother-in-law died shortly after and Moats never got to say goodbye. The guys think this whole issue could have been avoided with better communication from both parties. G&A know this cop could be in hot water. We took calls.
Monday we’ll be joined by Memphis head coach John Calipari, Cards’ quarterback Matt Leinart and NFL HOF’er Jim Kelly.
