Tangled Webb

Here’s what went down Friday on G&A

Lowering Your Demands? - ESPN is reporting the Cardinals have lowered their standards regarding a possible Anquan Boldin deal. The Red Birds are reportedly looking for only a 2nd-round pick and player in exchange for the Pro Bowler. The guys hate this new wrinkle. Gambo says Arizona would be better off keeping Q and shouldn’t be in a rush to deal him. Ash says it all depends on what type of player the Cards would get in return. The guys agree things get even stickier when it comes to a possible deal because whatever team gets him-will have to give him a new deal. Ash is hearing Anquan’s hamstring may be a bigger concern than what we are hearing. Gambo reported there is no truth to the rumors that the Cards want a 2nd-round pick and a player back for Boldin. ESPN’s Pedro Gomez said the Birds love Knowshon Moreno from Georgia. The guys would love to see him here. G&A’s advice to the Cards-be careful with the Anquan Boldin situation.

Big Unit’s Big Return - Randy Johnson makes his return to Chase Field this weekend, but it will be as a member of the San Francisco Giants. Gambo thinks the Unit deserves a standing ovation before taking the mound and delivering the first pitch tomorrow night. Ash feels RJ did just as much as any athlete here in Arizona. They agree anything less than a great ovation would be a slap in the face.

Where Are They Now? - We caught up with former Diamondbacks reliever, now MLB Network studio analyst Dan Pleasac. The 18-year veteran ranks 6th on all the all-time list with 1,064 appearances. He discussed the D-backs rocky start (he thinks they’re the biggest disappointment in baseball thus far) and shared his thoughts on the NL West.

Our ESPN NFL analyst Mark Schelerth previewed this weekend’s draft and the “need” areas for not only the Cardinals, but the rest of the NFC West. Will the Red Birds go running back or pass rusher in the 1st round? He said the Cards are still in a good position with Anquan Boldin-regardless of if they keep him or deal him.

Another Rumor - ESPN is reporting the Cards granted Boldin’s agent Drew Rosenhaus to discuss a contract with the Tennessee Titans. The deal would include a 2nd-round pick this year and a player to be named later (possibly LenDale White). Gambo reported there’s nothing to this deal and doesn’t like the deal to begin with. Mark isn’t in favor of it either and wants, regardless of how this trade or non-trade plays out, to Birds to land a top-tier running back like Beanie Wells, UCONN’s Donald Brown, or Moreno.

Mark May, our college football analyst from ESPN checked in with the draft less than 24 hours away. “MayDay” broke down the top prospects, sleepers, and who he feels will have an immediate impact at the next level. He loves o-tackles Michael Oher and UofA’s Eben Britton, but has durability concerns with running back Beanie Wells and balance issues with Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry.

Playing GM - Regardless of what happens with Anquan Boldin, the Cards will likely be selecting at #31 tomorrow evening. If you’re Rod Graves or Ken Whisenhunt, who do you like? The guys shared their favorite players, but know the microscope won’t feel so close drafting at the end of the 1st round, instead of in the top 10 where you almost have to “hit a homerun.” Gambo is hoping Donald Brown is there, but Ash doesn’t think so. Ash would love to see Northern Illinois’ Larry English or Everette Brown from Florida State. He is also intrigued by Britton, but doesn’t think he’ll be there. Gambo also likes Aaron Maybin.

Tangled Webb…Dave Burns reported Brandon Webb had tightness in his shoulder when he was playing catch off the mound this afternoon. Already on the disabled list, there is no timetable for a possible return to the bump. Ash could see this coming after Webb’s Opening Day not-so-great start against the Rockies at Chase Field. Gambo says it’s time for the D-backs to look into signing free-agent Pedro Martinez. The season may depend on it.
