One big Fiesta

Here’s what went down Thursday on G & A

Longing for a Fiesta - Still a couple weeks out from another solid Fiesta Bowl matchup.  Texas Longhorns coach Mack Brown joined G&A to discuss the big game, which he feels confident his team is concentrating on instead of the jumbled big picture in the BCS and in college football.  Brown also had high praise for Ohio State QB Terrell Pryor, and why not – he tried to recruit him!  Brown’s also been recruiting some top notch talent from the state of Arizona, and he doesn’t see that changing anytime soon.

The State of in-State recruiting - Speaking of out-of-state powers like Texas taking top notch high school players out of Arizona, G&A were struck by the case of Devon Kennard, regarded by most as the top in-state prospect.  Kennard has not ruled out ASU, but it certainly looks as if he is leaning elsewhere.  G&A see this as a troubling sign, one that may suggest neither Arizona school will be rising in the Pac-10 against the likes of Oregon, Cal, and certainly NOT USC.

Tiger vs. Phil - Phil Mickelson took some shots from an unlikely source:  Tiger Woods’ caddy!  Steve Williams’ critical comments of Phil were “out of line” according to most, including Gambo.  He feels Williams put his “boss”, Woods, in a bad position.  Ash feels it’s never good for a caddy to take a strong position, sort of like a kicker speaking out in football.

ESPN NBA analyst Tim Legler joined G&A to talk about the NBA season, one that is becoming increasingly dominated by one team.  Legs is amazed at how well the Boston Celtics are playing, especially considering the hangover effect that winning a championship often has (during the regular season) to a veteran team.  On the other side of the spectrum are disappointments like Toronto and Philadelphia, who both fired their head coaches.  Legs wasn’t particularly surprised.  After all, both GMs of those respective organizations inherited their head coaches.  Legs was surprised how career assistant Randy Whittman inherited the T-Wolves job (one which he no longer holds).  He says Whittman did a “horrible job,” and should stick to being an assistant.  Ouch.

Tomorrow:  E returns

Pick the pros - week 15

In Pick the Pros both Gambo and Ash look to recover after a sub-par week 14. Sports handicapper Brandon Lang looks to help out with the picks this week, as the end of the year can be kind of tricky. The picks

ASH - New York Giants (+3), Miami (-6.5), Kansas City (+5)

Gambo - Tennessee (-3), San Diego (-5), New England (-7)

E - New York Jets (-7.5), New England (-7), New York Giants (+3)

Audio: Robert Sarver

Suns majority owner Robert Sarver joined Gambo & Ash to discuss the big 5-player deal that landed talented guard Jason Richardson and Mike D’Antoni’s recent comments regarding his divorce with the club last summer.

Stars aren’t shining on Planet Orange

Here’s what went down Thursday on G & A

Shorter show this afternoon before Suns’ basketball in Dallas

Wanting his STATs - The short-handed Suns lost their third-straight, last night to New Orleans, minus the under-the-weather Steve Nash and with Shaq sitting out the front half of the back-to-back. Amare wants to be “the man,” but didn’t show it last night when his team needed him most. Amare scored 26, but he and Robin Lopez combined for a measly 4 rebounds in a 61 combined minutes. Gambo thinks it’s quite simple-Amare isn’t as good as he thinks he is. Ash reflected back on the players Phoenix recently drafted for themselves (Lopez, Drajic, Tucker, etc.) compared to who they drafted for other teams (Rajon Rondo, Rudy Fernandez, Luol Deng). The guys discussed if it’s time for the Suns to trade their selfish All-Star, although it may be tough to find suitors and equal value in return.

“Pac-Man” Manny Pacquiao joined the show to discuss his much-anticipated fight with light heavyweight champ Oscar de la Hoya Saturday night at The MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Pacquiao enters the fight 47-3-2 with 35 KO’s. “The Golden Boy” is 39-5 with 30 KO’s.

Worth the Investment? - Pacquiao-De la Hoya might well be the biggest fight in 2008, but initial pay-per-view numbers aren’t particularly high. The guys wonder if these two stars will eventually draw decent numbers just weeks before Christmas when economic times are so stagnant. We took calls.

Our ESPN NBA insider Tim Legler checked in for his weekly segment to discuss the slumping Suns who face the Mavs tonight in Dallas, Toronto’s firing of Sam Mitchell yesterday and the surging Cleveland Cavaliers, who have won 14 of their 15 games. “Legs” thinks the Suns would be wise to re-up Stoudemire before he leaves via free-agency.

Thanks, but no Thanks - Unbeaten Ball State turned down a chance to play Boise State in the Humanitarian Bowl on the blue turf in Boise. Instead, it appears the Broncos will face TCU in the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego. While Ball State is catching flack for backing out, Gambo applauds the decision to play essentially a road game for their bowl. Ash thinks it’s a shame Boise State, a BCS-eligible school, will likely play in the Poinsettia, a 7th place bowl in the Pac-10. Welcome to the wonderful world of the BCS.

Friday we’ll be joined by former Alabama head coach Mike DuBose, ESPN NFL analyst Mark Schlereth and sports handicapper Brandon Lang.

Dueling

Here’s what went down today on G&A

Abbreviated show before Suns’ basketball here on Sports 620 KTAR.

Sloppy Seconds - Dallas Star Sean Avery was suspended yesterday, but not for anything he did on the ice. Avery called out Calgary’s Dion Phaneuf, who happens to be dating his old girlfriend, Elisha Cuthbert. He wondered why so many fellow NHL players are dating his “sloppy seconds” referring to Phaneuf. G&A discussed how and why Gary Bettman made the Dallas center the first player in the history of the NHL to be suspended for any off-ice comments. Both agree his comments were way out of line. Ash wonders if the highly controversial Avery even wants to be a hockey player with so many interests away from the rink, including designing women’s bags and attending fashion shows. Gambo wishes Bettman would have allowed him to play against Calgary and “settle things” during the game. We took calls.

Former Coyote, now San Jose Shark center and former teammate of Avery, Jeremy Roenick joined the guys to discuss his relationship with Avery. “JR” wasn’t surprised to hear the comments and could sense a comment like this coming from the outspoken and frequently out-of-line Avery.

The guys caught up with former Abilene Christian quarterback Billy Malone. The now 25-year old pro prospect was a Texas high school blue chip recruit who originally signed with Tulane out of high school. Following a number of off-the-field issues, including a heart problem and drug and alcohol abuse, the pro-style signal-caller is on the NFL radars around the league. The husband and father or two once milked cows on a farm to make ends meet.

Arizona State athletic director Lisa Love checked in for her weekly segment to preview The Duel in the Desert Saturday in Tucson, yesterday’s sudden passing of long-time Sun Devil voice Tom Dillon, and everything else making news in Tempe.

Clubbing - Over 2 million college student-athletes are playing club sports. Many look at it as a way of extending their playing career if they may not be quite good enough to play at a D-1 level if the sport is offered at their schools. Some even use it as a way to get noticed by coaches on campus. G&A discussed why club sports are frequently underappreciated, but important towards the development of these student-athletes on, and off, the field. We took calls.

Arizona head football coach Mike Stoops shared his thoughts on Saturday’s match-up against the Sun Devils, reflected back on the careers of seniors Mike Thomas and Willie Tuitama, and expressed his opinion on how a 5th-tiebreaker crowned his former school, Oklahoma, the Big 12 South Champion.

Duel in the Desert - Mike Stoops has a chance to go 8-5 this year or go 6-7 depending on how the ASU and bowl game TBA play out. First things first are the Sun Devils Saturday night in Tucson. Gambo isn’t so sure Stoops saves his job if he loses to ASU-regardless of how the bowl game plays out. Ash thinks UofA will be too much to handle for the offensively inept Devils. Both feel Stoops has turned the program around, but wonder how patient AD Jim Livengood will be if the Cats’ current tailspin continues.

Thursday we’ll be joined by “Pac-Man” Manny Pacquiao, ESPN NBA analyst Tim Legler, and former Alabama head coach Mike DuBose.

Some fight in them

Here’s what went down Monday on G&A

Giant Gap? - The defending Super Bowl champs came in and left town with a convincing win over the NFC West-leading Cardinals. Gambo thinks the Cards played pretty well despite their ineptness in the red zone, as well as the fact that they couldn’t generate any pressure on Eli Manning, who picked them apart for 240 yards and 3 touchdowns. Ash feels there were too many breakdowns — especially with missed tackles in the secondary, two big turnovers, and lapses on special teams. Both were impressed with the cover skills of rookie Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. Why was the roof closed again? We took calls.

Big 12 Bottleneck - The BCS picture is becoming a little clearer — except in the top-heavy Big 12 South. Oklahoma smacked previously unbeaten Texas Tech, but still didn’t pass Texas in the BCS standings. Gambo thinks the Sooners’ beat-down of Tech was the most convincing win of the entire 2008 season. Ash thinks OU will pass UT in the BCS standings with a win this weekend over in-state rival Oklahoma State in Stillwater. The guys debated if the BCS works itself out in the end. Ash ripped Gambo for watching the nightmare that was Washington-Washington State. We took calls.

The guys caught up with light heavyweight champ Oscar de la Hoya, who previewed his much-anticipated bout next weekend against Manny Pacquiao at The MGM Grand in Las Vegas. “The Golden Boy” is 39-5 with 30 KO’s. Pacquiao enters the bout 47-3-2 with 35 KO’s. He discussed how he is approaching the fight and what he expects from Pac-Man.

Just How Good? - G&A briefly touched on the importance of next weekend’s fight in Vegas. Does the sport of boxing need an epic battle to “save” the sport, and just how good is de la Hoya going to look against the nails’ tough Pacquiao?

Tuesday we’ll be joined by ESPN college football analyst Mark May and NBA analyst Tim Legler.

A day for hoops

Here’s what went down Thursday on G&A

Measuring Stick - The big, bad Lakers roll into town to take on the new-look Suns Thursday. The storylines are everywhere, and they start with the on again/off again relationship between Kobe and Shaq - and O’Neal’s recent denial that he wants to return to LA. Ash thinks the Lakers are good for 65+ wins this season. They discussed the significance of the match-up and how the teams will go about stopping the other team’s best players. We took calls.

The guys caught up with Matt Barnes. The new Suns’ forward and recent father of twin boys discussed his first season in Phoenix and previewed tonight’s match-up with the 8-1 Lakers at U.S. Airways Center. Barnes is averaging 12 points and nearly 6 rebounds a game.

Rhode Trip - Florida State star safety Myron Rolle is in an interesting position. The ‘Noles have a big game this weekend at Maryland, but Rolle has something much bigger ahead of his in the “game of life.” Rolle is a finalist for the prestigious Rhodes scholarship and the interview is Saturday…in Alabama, and likely won’t make it to the game even though there is a private jet waiting just in case. G&A applaud what Rolle is doing on and off the field. Ash thinks you’re a scholar before you’re an athlete so the decision is quite simple. Gambo thinks other student-athletes should follow Rolle’s lead and get more out of their scholarship/education, because most don’t.

Former Diamondback and good friend of the program Luis Gonzalez updated us on his playing status for the 2009 season and shared information on his Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon tomorrow which benefits Arizona Quest for Kids.

Our ESPN NBA analyst Tim Legler shared his thoughts on Thursday’s Lakers-Suns game and everything else making headlines around the league. Legler thinks Phil Jackson’s team has the depth and talent to finish what they couldn’t last summer-win another NBA title.

Former NBA head coach, now TNT analyst commonly referred to as the “Czar of the Telestrator,” Mike Fratello joined G&A to break down Thursday’s Lakers-Suns game. He will be calling the game with Marv Albert and Reggie Miller.

Friday we’ll be joined by Giants o-lineman Grey Ruegamer, Cards’ Pro-Bowler Darnell Dockett, ESPN NFL analyst Mark Schlereth, Memphis assistant coach Josh Pastner and sports handicapper Brandon Lang.
