Gambo & Ash: September 27, 2007

Here’s what went down today on G&A

* BoMel decides to start Micah Owings this morning in Pittsburgh, pushing Brandon Webb back to Friday to start in Colorado. Micah stepped up on the bump and at the dish. D-Backs’ magic number currently 2 for playoffs and 3 for the NL West - HUGE series at Coors Field.

* G&A agree Micah deserves a spot in the post-season rotation instead of Livan Hernandez. Both agree the rookie can help on the hill and at the plate.

* Former ASU star and Steeler left tackle Marvel Smith joined the guys to preview Sunday’s game in Glendale against the Cards.

* The guys discussed the latest Shawn Marion trade news - both agree he is still on the block. Ash thinks Matrix gets plenty of love from the Suns.

* Stanford football coach Jim Harbaugh previewed their game against ASU.

Ash’s Blog: Time For “Matrix” To Fly!

I always had a feeling that this day would come for the Phoenix Suns.

The day that all the whining and complaining from Suns foward Shawn Marion actually became too much for them to handle.

Let me first say that I am a big fan of Shawn.

However, for the first time ever, I do think it is time for him to go. If he’s not happy being on a championship caliber team, being the highest paid player on the team, making four all-star games, being in some of the biggest commercials for Nike and being loved by the fans in Phoenix - then it is probably time to go.

That would make me feel pretty unappreciated.

I’m not sure why Trix acts this way, but we will see if the grass is greener on the other side. It depends on where he goes. If the Suns decide to trade Marion, I think there are only a few destinations that make sense for both sides. The first team that comes to mind is the Utah Jazz. See, they have their own disgruntled former all-star.

Andrei Kirilenko has already asked for his one-way ticket out of Salt Lake and the Jazz seem fine with that. Kirilenko had his worst numbers of his career last year and really fell out of favor with his coach and even some teammates. He is also being played out of position. The Jazz play him at the small forward spot and he is a power forward. If he were traded to Phoenix, he would start at power forward and really help with defense. Kirilenko averages about 2.5 blocks per game in his career, something the Suns could really use!

The negatives with a trade with Utah are that Kirilenko is owed four years and $63 million on his contract and I feel a front line of Boozer, Okur and Marion would be difficult for the Suns to handle if they met up in the post season.

The Lakers are the other team that make sense. I think a deal with Marion to LA for Lamar Odom and Brian Cook works for both teams and would allow the Suns to still compete for a title and wouldn’t neccessarily make the Lakers that much better!

Marion wants a three-year, $60 million dollar extension from the Suns and they don’t want to give it to him (I don’t blame them). Now that Marion knows that isnt an option he wants out. I’m not sure if they did give him the extension that he wouldn’t find something else to bitch about!

3:01-Marvel Smith: Former ASU star, now in his 8th season as the starting left tackle for the Pittsburgh Steelers checks in to preview their game against the Cardinals Sunday in Glendale.

TBA-Jim Harbaugh: 1st-year Stanford head coach discusses his first season with The Cardinal and breaks down their game Saturday against undefeated ASU at Stanford Stadium.

Gambo & Ash: September 26, 2007

Here’s what went down today on G&A

* Matrix speaks out and says he wants to be traded. Gambo & Ash agree it’s now time to move Marion. Ash thinks a trade to the Lakers is beneficial in a couple of ways. One: Lamar Odom is a better fit with the Suns than lazy AK-47. Two: Ash isn’t so sure the Suns could beat the Jazz with ‘Trix in Utah. Gambo shot down any ideas that Phoenix would pursue Jermaine O’Neal.

* Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin checked in for his weekly segment - said he never considered moving Brandon Webb back in the rotation to pitch in Colorado. Webbie has struggled against the Rocks.

* We were also joined by veteran clubhouse leader Diamondbacks first baseman Tony Clark, who praised BoMel and the Snakes younger players who have stepped in for injured players like Big Unit, O-Dog, and Chad Tracy. TC said one day he’d like to be a manager.

* ASU Athletic Director Lisa Love previewed the Devils first road game this Saturday at Stanford.

Tomorrow’s Guests:

Stanford head coach Jim Harbaugh

ASU wide receiver Mike Jones

Steelers offensive tackle Marvel Smith

Gambo & Ash: September 25, 2007

Here’s what went down today on G&A

* Short show before east coast baseball.

* Gambo says the D-Backs have already wrapped up the NL West…in short…look for the Padres or Rockies to clinch the division sometime later this week.

* The Saints suddenly stink - so do the Chargers, Bears, etc. Why are so many talented teams terrible this year? The guys discussed and took calls.

* We dove into the Mike Gundy mess. G&A defend the female columnist for writing the story - especially since Gundy couldn’t back up his arguments. Both agree it’s not the media’s job to support athletes. Gambo says it’s ok to be critical of student athletes in college - not high school or below.

* ESPN baseball insider Tim Kurkjian broke down the pennant races - national media still amazed at the success of Bob Melvin’s team.

* ESPN college football analyst Mark May from ESPN shared his thoughts on the Mike Gundy mess, saying he loved the fact that the coach supported/defended his player.

Tuesday, September 25, 2007

Gambo & Ash LIVE 1:00-3:30PM before Diamondbacks’ baseball on Sports 620 KTAR

2:41-Tim Kurkjian: ESPN baseball insider checks in to discuss the final week of regular season play. The D-Backs’ magic number is shrinking, the Padres are tanking and the Rockies are making a serious push for the post-season.

3:01-Mark May: ESPN college football analyst joins the show for his weekly segment to discuss all the big games last weekend including LSU’s win over South Carolina and Georgia upsetting Alabama. MayDay will also discuss ASU’s return to the Top 25 and Mike Gundy’s meltdown.

Gambo & Ash: September 24, 2007

Here’s what happened today on G&A

* The Cards’ QB controversy dominated the show this afternoon…another nail-biter for the Red Birds.

* Gambo says stick with Leinart unless the situation fits Warner better - Ash agrees, but thinks Anquan prefers Kurt over Matt.

* ASU beats Oregon State to stay perfect at 4-0 and overcomes another slow start (19-0 deficit). Ash is concerned about these slow starts and knows ASU can’t fall behind against the cream of the crop (USC, CAL, Oregon).

* We were joined by ASU football coach Dennis Erickson, who took coaching tips from Gambo – well, sort of.

* Gambo reported the Suns are close to inking free-agent forward Brian Skinner.

* The D-Backs look to shrink their magic number - off today – to open series in Pittsburgh against the struggling Pirates tomorrow.

* Gambo got another photo radar ticket and blamed the city of Scottsdale. Ash says, don’t pay it and Gambo weighs his options. Gambo says he will ignore it, then possibly take a “1-year leave of absence” if they try to serve him.

Guests tomorrow:

Mark May & Tim Kurkjian
