The Reeking Rattlers

Here’s what went down today on G&A

* The 620 SportsLine Guarantee: Dave Burns and Gambo guarantee that Ash will wear a pink shirt with his initials embroidered on it at least twice in November. What do you think?

* The NBA season gets underway tonight and the Spurs get their rings. NBA fans around the country still don’t care, but they do care about the Suns. Gambo & Ash previewed the new-look Suns and how the season might play out. Gambo thinks keeping Amare out of foul trouble will be the biggest key. Ash thinks Mike D’Antoni needs to stretch out his bench so they will be ready if called upon late in the year or in the playoffs.

* ESPN baseball insider Tim Kurkjian broke the ‘Grady Little out, Joe Torre in’ story then joined Gambo & Ash to discuss.

* ESPN college football analyst Mark May talked college football and shared his thoughts on the Sun Devils and what might happen this weekend in Eugene.

* The Rattlers are going to give season ticket holders back their money if they fail to make the playoffs. Gambo & Ash think this reeks of desperation for what once was “the thing to do” during the hot summer months in Phoenix.

* We were also joined by Diamondbacks outfielder Eric Byrnes. Byrnes talked about the season that was and the Arizona Fall League Pat Tillman Benefit Night this Friday. Byrnes will throw out the first pitch.

Miracle in Mississippi

National love

Here’s what went down today on G&A:

* ASU and first-year coach Dennis Erickson get their statement win, beating Cal at Sun Devil Stadium. The Sun Devils are now sitting pretty for a big-time bowl game. Gambo & Ash applaud the Sun Devils’ offensive line for manhandling Cal up front. Gambo thinks ASU is getting the national love they deserve, Ash isn’t so sure - both agree if they stay perfect, they will play for the national championship title.

* Red Sox sweep away the Rockies. The guys discuss just how many years the Sox will dominate and what will happen to Curt Schilling.

* A-Rod is out of the Big Apple and will test the free agent market. Gambo hopes this whole thing blows up in the face of super agent Scott Boras.

* Gambo is happy the Yankees are closing in Joe Girardi.

* We were joined by Trinity head coach Steve Mohr. The D-III Tigers defeated Millsap over the weekend on a 15-lateral last play from scrimmage. Mohr coached Cardinals wide receiver Jerheme Urban at Trinity. Urban gave the pregame speech before the “Miracle in Mississippi”.

* Cardinals wide receiver Anquan Boldin also joined the show. The Red Birds open the second half of the season Sunday in Tampa against the Bucs.

Tomorrow: ESPN baseball insider Tim Kurkjian & college football analyst Mark May

Bedlam in Beantown

Here’s what went down today on G&A

* Red Sox edge the Rockies to take a 2-0 series lead. Gambo & Ash agree Curt Schilling further enhanced his postseason resume with a solid outing at Fenway Park.

* Bedlam in Beantown. Red Sox beat Colorado just minutes after Boston College’s dramatic comeback win in Blacksburg.

* Big story out of The East Valley. Nike will sponsor four Chandler high schools. Gambo & Ash don’t have a problem with this. Gambo thinks this is a shrewd business decision by The Swoosh if different high school programs can make additional funds.

* We were joined by ASU color analyst Jeff Van Raaphorst. Rapper previewed the BIG Cal-ASU game tomorrow.

* Gambo & Ash knows ASU has hit the big-time - making the lead story on espn.com this afternoon.

* We were also joined by ESPN MNF analyst Ron Jaworski. Jaws discussed the first half of the Cardinals’ season, plus, broke down the Patriots perfect run and everything else making headlines around the league.

Table for one!

Here’s what went down today on G&A

* The Red Sox drop a 13-1 hammer on the Rockies last night in Boston. Gambo & Ash marvel at Josh Beckett who toyed with the Rockies in Game 1. Gambo thinks this series will be short and sweet. Ash believes Boston will win, but not as easily as people think following last night’s blood bath.

* We were joined by ESPN baseball analyst Pedro Gomez from Boston. Pedro thinks the Red Sox super-power lineup will take care of Rocks. The guys discussed Curt Schilling and how much he hates Pedro and Boston Globe columnist Dan Shawnessy - Table for One!

* D-Backs top pitching prospect Max Scherzer checked in. He’s playing in the Arizona Fall League Rising Stars Showcase tomorrow in Surprise. Scherzer said he’s learned a lot in his first year of professional ball and has gained great experience in the Fall League.

* The guys previewed the Cal-ASU game Saturday. Gambo thinks this is the biggest - and most important - home game in the past 10 years dating back to the Ryan Leaf Era at Wazzu. Callers were split as to who will win.

* The NBA is back in the news for all the wrong reasons again. David Stern does not punish a half dozen refs for violating the NBA gambling policy and G&A wonder what he’s thinking.

* We were also joined by Chargers Pro Bowl fullback Lorenzo Neal. Great interview discussing the California wild fires, the uncertainty of this weekend’s game against the Texans, and playing for Norvell Turner.

Tomorrow: ASU color man Jeff Van Raaphorst & ESPN MNF analyst Ron Jaworski

Ash’s Blog: World Series Prediction

Okay, one outta two isn’t bad.

I thought my previous prediction of the Colorado Rockies vs. the Cleveland Indians was looking pretty good, until the Red Sox decided to defy the odds once again.

I give this Boston team a ton of props. This team never feels like they are out of it and that makes them very dangerous - oh yeah, and so does Josh Beckett. This guy is ridiculous right now - shades of Bob Gibson in 1967.

The Sox also have the dangerous duo of Manny Ramirez and Big Papi Ortiz in the middle of that lineup. Curt Schilling is one of the best postseason pitchers in the history of baseball and even though he doesn’t throw as hard as he used to, he is still one of the best.

Dice-K had a nice Game 7 in the ALCS and might have proven his worth for the ridiculous contract he signed. But, I’m not sure how he will pitch in Colorado.

Colorado was one of the hottest teams I’ve ever seen. I say “was” because I’m not sure how the layoff will affect them. They have sat around and played catch in the snow for the last seven days. You would think that would slow them down a little.

Here is how I think the series will play out:

Game 1: Too much Beckett! Sox win 4-1.

Game 2: I love the way Jiminez brings it! I’ll take the Rockies 6-4 as they find a way to beat Schilling.

Game 3: I’m not a big Josh Fogg fan and I think this is the one guy that could be rocked early. I’ll take Dice-K and the Sox 8-4.

Game 4: Lester vs. Cook - flip a coin? Heads. I’ll take the Rockies in this one 7-6.

Game 5: That Beckett guy again, huh? Sox 3-2.

Game 6: Start the celebration! Schilling gets it done again.

Gambo angry at Presidential candidate Rudy Guiliani

Here’s what went down today on G&A

* The Great One, Coyotes coach Wayne Gretzky joined the guys. The Coyotes off to a slow start – again.

* Gambo & Ash previewed the Fall Classic. Both agree the Red Sox are the clear-cut favorite, but the Rockies could turn the tables if they can beat Josh Beckett tonight.

* Gambo is pissed at big Yankee fan and Presidential candidate Rudy Guiliani because he’s pulling for the Red Sox to beat Colorado.

* ASU Athletic Director Lisa Love told Gambo & Ash that ASU should sell out their showdown with Cal Saturday. She is excited for ASU basketball as well.

*Gambo & Ash chatted with ASU linebacker Mike Nixon. The 24-year old sophomore linebacker says the Sun Devils can prove their critics wrong with a strong finish to the season.

* Gambo & Ash say ASU can beat Cal, but be wary of the Golden Bears.

* Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt joined the guys at the mid-way point of the season. Whisenhunt says it’s a good time to relax away from football and get healthy. The Cardinals still have plenty to play for in the wide open NFC West.

Tomorrow: Full recap of WS Game 1 from Fenway and D-Backs star pitching prospect Max Sherzer, who is playing in the Arizona Fall League

Gambo & Ash: October 23, 2007

Here’s what went down today on G&A

* San Diego wildfires continue to spread through various communities. The Chargers will practice here, but where will they play?

* The NFL is going Euro this weekend. G&A discuss the chances of the Super Bowl one day being played overseas - both hate the idea. Ash says the NFL doesn’t need the money/exposure. Gambo says Roger Goodell is all about making money and if that means going overseas, he will do it.

* ESPN baseball insider Tim Kurkjian checked in from Fenway Park to preview the Fall Classic which starts tomorrow in Beantown. G&A broke down the Rockies-Sox matchup. Kurkjian has the BoSox in seven.

* We talked college football with ESPN college football analyst Mark May. MayDay says Mike Stoops and Jim Livengood are likely done at the end of the year. Mark says UofA should pursue Fresno State head coach Pat Hill.

* G&A took open phones on Stoops. Gambo thinks he’s gone and Ash believes the ‘Cats may not want to buy him out - especially since they’re still paying the nightmare that was John Mackovic. Ash thinks Livengood might fall on the sword, instead.

* We also discussed this weekend’s Cal-ASU game in Tempe.

Tomorrow: Wayne Gretzky, ASU AD Lisa Love, and Ken Whisenhunt, who will break down the 1st half of the Cards’ season
