The Big House

Here’s what went down today on G&A:

* Busy show on with plenty of big topics:

* Oregon plays UA tonight in The Old Pueblo. Gambo & Ash debate if the ‘Cats can shock the Ducks again. Gambo says this is a big game for Mike Stoops and Dennis Dixon and his Heisman hopes on an ESPN stage. Dennis Erickson says Sun Devil fans should not cheer for the ‘Cats even if a UA win would help ASU’s BCS chances. We took calls - many said they won’t cheer for UA.

* We were joined by College and NFL Hall of Famer Dan Dierdorf. The former Michigan star previewed Ohio State-Michigan game Saturday at The Big House.

* Former ASU walk-on Levi Jones joined the show. The Bengals’ Pro-Bowl tackle is preparing for their game with the Cardinals Sunday in Cincinnati.

* Breaking news on Barry Bonds. Barroid was indicted on perjury and obstruction of justice. Do we really need to say more?

* Phil Jackson apologized (sort of) for his Brokeback Mountain comments he made following their loss to the Spurs. Ash wasn’t offended, but thinks the NBA doesn’t need these types of remarks. Gambo thinks Phil was just trying to be funny.

* We were also joined by ESPN NBA analyst Tim Legler.

Tomorrow: Ron Jaworski & Pick the Pros

D’Antoni needs to relax

Here’s what went down today on G&A:

* Suns beat the shorthanded Knicks, then Mike D’Antoni rips his team - and Suns’ fans, in the process. Gambo & Ash love D’Antoni, but wonder why he would open his postgame presser with a verbal assault on the fans. Ash thinks everyone, including D’Antoni, need to relax.

* Stephon Marbury says he has dirt on Knicks’ coach Isiah Thomas. Gambo & Ash agree Marbury is being a baby and just needs to shut up and play.

* The NFL re-instates Dolphin running back Ricky Williams. Ash thinks Miami should trade him right now. Gambo believes the win-less Fish need all the help they can get, but would never want Ricky as a teammate - and neither should any of the Dolphins.

* We were joined by Cardinals linebacker Calvin Pace. The Wake Forest alum is having a breakthrough season and he credits Whiz and the new staff for putting him in a scheme to be successful on the field. The free-agent-to-be says he wants to be back in Arizona next season if the money is right - stay tuned.

* We were also joined by NL Manager of the Year and Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin. BoMel discussed the season that was and how he hopes the young team will improve moving forward.

* Suns’ analyst Tim Kempton bet Gambo & Ash that his sorry alma mater Notre Dame will reach a BCS bowl game next year. Gambo & Ash discussed the restaurant of choice when they win the sucker bet. We updated Tim on the Fighting Irish’s schedule next season, which includes The Marines, The Salvation Army, and Old Navy.

Tomorrow: Bengals Pro-Bowler & former ASU star tackle Levi Jones, NFL HOF’er Dan Dierdorf, and ESPN NBA analyst Tim Legler

Morning Show Yard Sale Guy

Here’s what went down today on G&A:

* Stephon Marbury was absent from Knicks’ shootaround this morning. Isiah Thomas says Starbury will be welcomed back when he decides to return - later Stephon left Phoenix to head back to New York. His future as a Knickerbocker unclear.

* G&A both agree Stephon is a talented player and a good-hearted person, but not nearly the player he thinks he is. Ash thinks losses follow Marbury from team-to-team. Gambo thinks Marbury is a classic sports “loser”. We took calls on other sports “losers” and former Sun Devils coach Dirk Koetter was one name listed.

* ESPN college football insider Mark May checked in to talk college football. MayDay wants Ohio State and their fans to stop complaining. Notre Dame has hit rock-bottom. May also discussed the Sun Devils big win over UCLA.

* We debuted the Morning Show Yard Sale Guy - Doug Franz is still a joke.

* We also previewed the Suns-Knicks game minus Starbury and former Sun Quentin Richardson.

The Big-10 is overrated

Here’s what went down today on G&A:

* The Cardinals get a much-needed win over the Lions yesterday and the defense steps up in a big way, particular, oft-injured Karlos Dansby. The guys discussed how important Dansby is to Clancy Pendergast’s schemes and if NFC West is suddenly the Cardinals’ division to lose. Both agree the Cardinals will cut the again-injured Bertand Berry at the end of the year.

* The Browns are in a pickle: Do they re-sign the red-hot Derek Anderson or usher in The Brady Quinn Era in Cleveland next year? G&A marvel at the success Anderson has had in young NFL career. This could shape up to be another Drew Brees-Phillip Rivers mess.

* Ash celebrates as The Ohio State University is upset at The Shoe by Juice Williams and Illinois. G&A agree Ohio State and the Big-10 are overrated. Just how good is this Kansas team - Ash thinks they’re a team to watch in the BCS chase.

* G&A also breakdown how the recent BCS shakeup effects ASU. Gambo thinks the USC-ASU winner will go to the Rose Bowl and the loser to the Holiday Bowl. Ash thinks USC just isn’t that good.

* We were joined by Cardinals wide receiver Anquan Boldin. ”Q” insists he’s healthy although his production has been down since returning from injury.

Tomorrow: Mark May

Help inside hard to come by

Here’s what went down today on G&A:

* Dan Majerle joined the guys to talk about Jerry Colangelo’s emotional induction ceremony at US Airways Center on Sunday. He also talked about the Suns struggles inside, the Celtics early success and Shaq’s decline in Miami.

* G&A took calls on the Suns loss in Atlanta. Most agree that they could use some help inside and that help will be hard to come by.

* Given Nebraska’s and Notre Dame’s struggles, is it time for college Athletic Directors to stop looking to the NFL for head coaches? G&A agree that LSU DC Bo Pelini would make sense as Bill Callahan’s successor.

* ESPN analyst Tim Legler joined the guys for his weekly segment. Legs talked about the Suns and some of the early surprises in the NBA, including the Houston Rockets.

* ESPN and MNF analyst Ron Jaworski joined G&A for a “Football Thursday.” Due to the Suns-Heat game tomorrow, Jaws talked to the guys about all the NFL matchups one day early.

Tomorrow: Former Florida State star, and current Detroit Lions leading tackler, Ernie Sims.

One of the boys

Here’s what went down today on G&A:

* Short show today before Suns-Hawks basketball from Atlanta.

* Suns pound the Bobcats. Gambo & Ash debate how much we can take away from this game. Boris Diaw continues to thrive in the Amare-less lineup. G&A debate if Diaw and Amare can co-exist together on the floor. There was a Sean Marks sighting, as well, but Gambo & Ash don’t think the Suns can rely on the type of production that they got from “The Flying Kiwi”.

* The Diamondbacks (in particular Ken Kendrick) are defending Matt Williams, but showed no love for Jason Grimsley when he was busted for HGH. G&A think Matty is, “one of the boys” while Grimsley never was and that is why they are backing him. Ash thinks Kendrick needs to keep his mouth shut and not comment on things he knows little about.

Tomorrow: ESPN NBA analyst Tim Legler

Dropping the hammer

Here’s what went down today on G&A:

* The Sun Devils are no longer undefeated. G&A agree ASU had their chances, but play-calling cost the Devils their perfect record. Both agree the Rose Bowl is still well within reach, but need some help from some other BCS teams.

* We were joined by ASU quarterback Rudy Carpenter. Rudy said the Autzen crowd made it difficult to audible all game. He says team has not lost confidence and needs to focus now on UCLA this weekend.

* The Suns are off to a somewhat slow start. The Lakers dropped the hammer on Friday and then Mike D’Antoni goes off on Phil Jackson following his Zen-like actions late in the game.

* Johnny V. checked in to discuss the latest Amare news. G&A wonder if this team is built for postseason success - too small?

* Guys talked about the Pats-Colts game and both agreed the game lived up to the hype.

* Adrian Peterson goes off, setting the NFL rushing record. Gambo still thinks the Cardinals should have taken him.

* The Cardinals lost their 3rd-straight. Gambo thought Whiz blew it with poor timeout management. Ash still thinks there are plenty of winnable games over the 2nd half of the season. Both agree that winning the pathetic NFL West is the best (and only) way to get to the playoffs.

* We were joined by Cardinals wide receiver Anquan Boldin, who says the team needs to pick up the pace right now.

Tomorrow: ESPN college football analyst Mark May

No room in baseball for astericks

Here’s what went down today on G&A:

* The Suns are off and running – literally. Planet Orange opens the season with a win in Seattle against the new-look Sonics. G&A discuss the good, bad and ugly last night at Key Arena.

* We were joined by Suns’ guard Marcus Banks. Banks hit 4-5 3-pointers against the Sonics and gave Steve Nash much-needed rest until the 4th quarter when the Suns made a run and put the game away.

* G&A discussed the latest Barry Bonds saga. Barroid says he won’t go in the HOF if his record-setting homerun ball has an * on it. Gambo wonders why Bonds doesn’t just buy the ball from fashion designer Marc Echo, since he’s a multi-millionaire. Ash actually agrees with Barry, saying there is no room for asterisks in baseball.

* Former ASU All-American Juan Roque previewed the Sun Devils game tomorrow at Autzen against the Ducks. He compared his ’96 undefeated team to this season’s team and said the Sun Devils can win tomorrow if their defense continues to play well. Roque will be calling the game.

* G&A both pick the Ducks to beat ASU.

* We were also joined by ESPN’s Ron Jaworski. Jaws still thinks the Red Birds can reach the playoffs and he also previewed the BIG Pats-Colts game in Indy and how the Saints and Bolts are playing good football.

Monday: Cards WR Anquan Boldin & ASU QB Rudy Carpenter

Ash’s NBA 2007-’08 Predictions

Western Conference Standings:

1. Dallas Mavericks - The Mavs are still stinging from their embarrassing loss in the first round of the playoffs to Golden State. The regular season will prove nothing to the critics as Dallas will have to win in the playoffs to erase that memory. They still win 64 games this year.

2. Phoenix Suns - Tim Donaghy you piece of *%$@. OK, maybe it’s not all his fault. David Stern you piece - you get the idea. The Suns got jobbed last year and look for redemption this year. The addition of Grant Hill was nice, now let’s hope coach D’Antoni doesn’t forget about his bench during the regular season. Suns win 60.

3. San Antonio Sterns – Err…the Spurs. I can’t even write anything nice about them, so if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all. Thanks Mom.

4. Denver Nuggets - A full year of A.I. and ‘Melo together and Kenyon Martin coming back into the mix. That’s nice and won’t be so nice for some of the teams in the West. Hey, it happened for the Rockies, why not the Nuggets?

5. Utah Jazz - Tough, physical team who made it to the Western Conference Finals last year. They need to keep a pacifier close for Kirilenko and everything should be fine.

6. Houston Rockets - If T-Mac stays healthy, this spot could be as high as No. 3 in the West, but I’m thinking that won’t happen. Is this finally Yao’s team?

7. Golden State Warriors - What a great run they gave us last year. Getting rid of Jason Richardson was not smart. Nellie’s back and so is the run and gun in the Bay area.

8. Memphis Grizzlies - There’s my shocker. I think Marc Iavoroni brings a fun style to a fun city and gets the Grizz back into the playoffs. Oh yeah, a healthy Pau Gasol will help.

9. New Orleans Hornets - The Hornets spent a lot of money last season and it didn’t work. I think this could be a playoff team this year if some of those busts turn into even decent players once again. Chris Paul is a star on the rise.

10. Los Angeles Lakers - I don’t think they make the playoffs with or without Kobe. I’m still guessing that he gets traded and it gets even worse in La La Land. How does Mitch Kupcake have a job?

11. Portland Trail Blazers - It’s too bad the Blazers made the wrong pick at No. 1. I said all along that Durant was the pick, but no one listens to me. The Blazers will still be improved as Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge lead this young team back to respectability.

12. Seattle Sonics - Sonics are on their way out of the Pacific Northwest, but they are on their way up with the addition of Kevin Durant. Too bad Oklahoma City will be reaping the benefits in a year!

13. Sacramento Kings - Ron Artest will punch something this season – it just might be his ticket out of Sac-Town.

14. Los Angeles Clippers - Welcome back to the Lottery Clips. We all missed Elgin Baylor on Lottery night.

15. Minnesota T-Wolves - Do I really need to explain this one?

Eastern Conference Standings:

1. Chicago Bulls - I think the Bulls are legit whether they get Kobe or not. They got off to a rough start last year and that hurt them in the long run.

2. Boston Celtics - The big winner in the off-season moves. KG and Ray Allen give the Celtics their best chance to be relevant again since Larry the Legend was lighting it up!

3. Detroit Pistons - They really didn’t do much to improve, but they have played in five straight Eastern Conference Finals. I think that streak ends this year.

4. Cleveland Cavaliers - They sure didn’t do much to build off last seasons success. LBJ might win the MVP, but the team will be hard pressed to repeat last season’s run.

5. Orlando Magic - That’s right, I said Orlando. I think Dwight Howard will be an MVP candidate and the addition of Rashard Lewis gives them a great 1-2 punch.

6. New Jersey Nets - This could be the last hoorah for Jason Kidd and Vince Carter. The star power is there, but a deep run in the playoffs isn’t.

7. Toronto Raptors - Chris Bosh is really starting to come into his own as a star. The Raptors will be good, but the East got better and that will knock them down a bit.

8. Washington Wizards - Agent Zero will score 60 points in a game this year – guaranteed.

9. Miami Heat - The end is here for the Heat. They won’t make the playoffs this year.

10. Charlotte Bobcats - The Bobcats picked up a pure scorer in Jason Richardson and re-signed Gerald Wallace. Unfortunately Adam Morrisson is out for the year with a sprained mustache.

NBA Finals & Awards

* Rookie of the Year - Kevin Durant

* Coach of the Year - Stan Van Gundy

* MVP - LeBron James

* NBA Finals - Chicago Bulls vs. Phoenix Suns

* This time the right team wins - Suns in 6.
