War of words

Here’s what went down today on G&A:

* Ron Mexico will stay in jail for another 20 months (at least) and faces losing up to $143 million. G&A discussed the length of the sentence. Both agree Vick will be suspended by the NFL once he’s out of the hole and will never step on an NFL field again.

* We were joined by John Goodwin, who was at the sentencing in Richmond this morning. Richmond, who is the manager of Animal Fighting Issues for the Humane Society, said the Vick saga has helped raise awareness for dog fighting and animal cruelty.

* The Cardinals melted down on the field and in the locker room Sunday in Seattle. The NFC West title is gone and the Red Birds have only a slim chance of making the post-season as a wild card. Both agree it will be nearly impossible for the Cardinals to win out so it really doesn’t matter. Oh, how those San Francisco losses hurt.

* G&A still think Levi Brown stinks and will eventually be moved to guard. He was worked over Sunday by Seahawk speed-rusher Patrick Kerney.

* Johnny V. checked in from Cardinal headquarters with the latest injury news and the Blackstock-Dockett war of words.

* The Patriots slap around the Steelers to stay perfect. Spread for the Jets game this weekend opened at 27.5.

Tomorrow: ESPN college football insider Mark May

Jaws breaks it down

Here’s what went down today on G&A:

* ESPN MNF analyst Ron Jaworski checked in for his weekly segment to break down all the big games including Monday night’s thriller in Baltimore between the Ravens and the still-perfect Patriots. Jaws discussed the Cardinals big win over Cleveland and what he thinks will happen Sunday in Seattle against the NFC West-leading Seahawks.

* ESPN MNF analyst Ron Jaworski - Part II

* We were joined by Seattle Seahawks Pro Bowl tackle Walter Jones. The Seahawks seven-time Pro Bowl left tackle and probable future Hall-of-Famer discussed his great career with in Seattle and previewed Sunday’s game against the Cardinals at Qwest Field.

Boris Diaw Sighting

Here’s what went down today on G&A:

* There was Boris Diaw sighting last night in Toronto. Did a pre-game “pep talk” from Mike D’Antoni have anything to do with it? G&A agree the Suns will never get their money’s worth with Diaw.

* Dirk Nowitzki is struggling. Gambo thinks the Mavericks place at/near the top of The Association is coming to an end. Jason Kidd is unhappy in New Jersey. Might Mark Cuban try to bring J-Kidd back to Big D? G&A don’t think the teams could “match the numbers.”

* We were joined by NFL Hall of Famer Len Dawson. Dawson talked about the draft coin toss that landed him in Pittsburgh and some guy named Jim Brown in Cleveland.

* ESPN NBA analyst Tim Legler checked in. Legs said Carmello Anthony is a skilled player that plays NO defense.

* We were also joined by Light heavyweight champion Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins. Hopkins thinks Ricky Hatton can upset Floyd Mayweather this weekend in Vegas.

Tomorrow: ESPN MNF analyst Ron Jaworski & Seattle Seahawks Pro Bowl tackle Walter Jones

The Fabulous Frenchman

Here’s what went down today on G&A:

* Gambo had the day off - Johnny V. filled in with Ash. Short show before Suns-Raptors basketball.

* Planet Orange improved to 2-0 on this east coast road trip with a close win over the Pacers. Amare goes off for 42 points and Boris Diaw continues to struggle to find his role on this team - Ash & V wonder if he ever will. Both agree they need another shooter-badly. Would Memphis be willing to part ways with Mike Miller in exchange for the “Fabulous Frenchman?”

* Ash & V broke down the Tigers-Marlins blockbuster deal. Both agree this deal puts Detroit near the top of AL with Boston, Cleveland and the Yankees. Who knows if the Marlins’ new prospects will pan out - they might-they might not.

* ESPN NFL reporter Sal Paolantonio joined the guys to talk some football and discuss his new book.

* We were joined by ASU Athletic Director Lisa Love. The Devils are preparing for their Holiday Bowl matchup later this month against Texas in San Diego.

Tomorrow: NFL HOF’er Len Dawson, ESPN NBA analyst Tim Legler and Bernard Hopkins

Gambo & Ash screensaver

Here’s what went down today on G&A:

* Short show from the home offices of the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl before Suns-Pacers basketball.

* The Patriots survive in Baltimore to remain unbeaten. Gambo hates New England and claims they were nothing more than extremely lucky last night against the Ravens. G&A agree the Belicheats have been exposed the past couple weeks by Philly and Baltimore. Ash believes the Pats’ sub-par rushing attack will eventually catch up with them-possibly in the post-season against the Colts.

* We talked some BCS with Fiesta Bowl President John Junker. JJ got a nice gift when he returned to the office from lunch today - a Gambo & Ash screensaver! That’s the gift that keeps on giving.

* We are also joined by ESPN college football insider Mark May. MayDay says the Pac-10 is a much better conference than the Big 10. May also discussed the numerous coaching vacancies and what might happen at such high-profile schools like Michigan and UCLA.

Tomorrow: Gambo’s off, Ash isn’t

Better Bowl Tie-ins

Here’s what went down today on G&A:

* The bowl games are set and the BCS is again under fire. Ash is reluctantly okay with Ohio State playing for it all (again). Gambo thinks the BCS system, in the end, did its job. Gambo says ASU should be happy with the Holiday Bowl and wasn’t worthy of a BCS bid. Both agree the Pac-10 and President Tom Hansen need better bowl tie-ins so the second-place team - ASU in this case - won’t be left out of the big dollars and national exposure. G&A rip the Rose Bowl for selecting Illinois.

* We were joined by ASU wide receiver Chris McGaha. McGaha had a couple big catches in the win over UA Saturday.

* The D-Backs shipped Carlos Quentin to the White Sox for a prospect. Only time will tell if Josh Byrnes gave up on him too soon.

* The Cardinals got back to .500 with a narrow win over the Browns. Gambo gives Whiz and the gang kudos for continuing to fight through countless injuries and other set-backs. Ash applauded Edgerrin James for his production day on the ground Sunday. HUGE game in Seattle Sunday against the Seahawks.

* G&A spoke with Cardinals defensive end Antonio Smith. Smith has been a pleasant surprise on the defensive line and continues to play well in the Red Birds scheme.
