A-Plus Guests

Here’s what went down Wednesday on G&A:

* It was G&A’s first of three days down at Radio Row and they had a show filled with A-plus guests.

* First up was Hall of Fame Detroit Lions running back Barry Sanders. Sanders talked about his decision to retire and the Giants dynamic backfield of Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw. Gambo thinks Bradshaw is a big time running back.

* Mel Renfro, cornerback of the Dallas Cowboys and 2-time Super Bowl champion spoke about the struggles of former NFL players and his great playing career.

* Atlanta Falcons running back Warrick Dunn checked in at Radio Row. He discussed rushing for 10,000 yards, the Michael Vick situation and how much longer he thinks he will play in the NFL.

* Lisa Love called in and she chatted about ASU men’s and women’s basketball, plus everything else that is going on with ASU athletics.

* The last guest of the day was Suns forward Boris Diaw. Diaw has been inserted into the starting lineup with Grant Hill now coming off the bench. He broke down the Suns most complete win of the season over the Atlanta Hawks and previewed the big game on Thursday against the San Antonio Spurs.

Tomorrow: Radio Row Day 2

Guests:

ESPN analyst Tim Legler, Super Agent Drew Rosenhaus, Ravens All Pro Offensive Lineman Jonathan Ogden

Can The Patriots Achieve Perfection?

Here’s what went down Tuesday on G&A:

* The Super Bowl is approaching. The world is watching the Valley of the Sun.

* Boston is on quite a “sports high” with the success of the Patriots, Red Sox, Celtics, and even, Boston College. The guys debated if any other city has experienced the “wealth of sports success” as Bean Town. We took calls.

* The Mets have a new ace. His name is Johan Santana. Gambo says the Twins had no choice financially, but to trade Santana. G&A wonder how many “prime” years Santana has left. Both like the deal for New York. Gambo is happy his Yankees backed out of the Santana Sweepstakes.

* Former UA star, now Giants rookie safety Michael Johnson checked in from the media day. He’s ready for the rematch against Tom Brady, Randy Moss, and the Patriots this weekend.

* World-renowned sports handicapper Brandon Lang checked in. He’s $ in picking the Super Bowl. Lang has correctly picked against the Super Bowl spread for the past 15 years. He likes the underdog Giants to cover on Sunday.

* We were also joined by Bills running back Marshawn Lynch, NFL Hall-of-Fame quarterback Steve Young, and Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb. All really good interviews with interesting takes on the Perfect Patriots.

* Steve Young Part One

* Steve Young Part Two

* New Tigers starter Dontrelle Willis joined the show, as well. “D-Train” is excited to pitch for a World Series contender again.

Tomorrow: Radio Row, Day 1.

Guests: Packers wide receiver Greg Jennings, former Cowboy Gridiron Great Mel Renfro, and ASU AD Lisa Love.

Anger Management

Here’s what went down Monday on G&A:

* Doug Franz has anger management issues. G&A wonder why Doug would treat his co-workers with such disrespect-via e-mail, no less. Oh well, every clock ticks a little different, I guess.

* We are less than a week away from the “big game” in Glendale. The masses are beginning to trickle into the Valley. G&A discussed which Patriot team will show up. The team that blew everyone out the first half of the season - or the team that has “struggled” in the playoffs? Gambo threw big props to Bill Belichick for tweaking the week-to-week games plans and keeping the perfect season intact - even when things didn’t look good (vs. Ravens on MNF). With weather not expected to be any sort of factor, Ash thinks this could be another “breakout” game for New England.

* ASU hoops is reeling after three straight losses while UA is playing the best basketball of the season with three straight wins. Ash predicted a mid-season stumble after the Sun Devils’ 4-0 start in conference play. G&A agree they need a second scoring option outside of freshman phenom James Harden.

* The Suns outlasted the shorthanded Bulls Sunday in Chicago. Steve Nash loved the “ugly win.” Gambo thinks this team is good enough to win it all, but inconsistent enough to lose in the first round. Will the Suns look past Atlanta tomorrow? They better not - they own the Hawks 1st-round pick this year.

Tuesday: Donovan McNabb, Dontrelle Willis and super sports handicapper Brandon Lang

Is Davis Really ‘Committed To Excellence’?

Here’s what went down Friday on G&A.

* Extremely short show before Suns-Cavs hoops from Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland

* The guys talked to Cards’ Pro Bowl defensive tackle Darnell Dockett who’s excited to join Larry Fitzgerald in Honolulu. D2 shared his thoughts on the season that was, what’s needed to improve the 8-8 Red Birds, and his Super Bowl week plans which includes plenty of socializing.

* We were also joined by 4-time Super Bowl champ and College and Pro Football Hall of Famer Ted Hendricks. “The Stork” shared some great stories about his old-school playing days with the Raiders and the breaking news regarding Oakland coach Lane Kiffin who is being asked to resign by Al Davis. Kiffin just completed the first year of his 3-year contract.

* G&A agree Davis is a joke. The mere fact that Davis wants to hire Denny Green says it all. G&A also applaud Kiffin for balking at Davis’ request and, in turn, forcing the Raiders’ owner to pay up if he wants a new coach in his never-ending “Commitment to Excellence”.

* ASU mens hoops suffered its first “bad loss” of the season last night to Washington at Wells Fargo Arena. Ash thinks Saturday’s showdown against Washington State is suddenly a must-win game for the Sun Devils.

* We talked about UofA’s big win over Wazzu last night in Tucson. Gambo thinks Jordan Hill is key to the ‘Cats success. Ash feels Jerryd Bayless can help take UofA to new heights, at both ends of the floor.

What Bostonians Really Should Do

Here’s what went down Thursday on G&A:

* The Suns can’t seem to beat of all teams, the lowly T-Wolves. Amare again struggled guarding the bigger Al Jefferson. Gambo thinks the Suns might look to sign a couple big bodies to help better match-up against the bigger teams. This would take the pressure off STAT. Both G&A agree Amare doesn’t have the bulk or power to match-up with most centers or true power forwards around the league.

* FBR Chairman Tim Lewis checked in to preview next week’s festivities at the TPC of Scottsdale. Even without top-draw Tiger Woods (again), Louis expects monster crowds next week, including the thousands here for the Super Bowl.

* Jose Canseco is at it again. The slugger revealed that Tigers All-Star outfielder Magglio Ordonez asked him to leave him out of his next tell-all book and, in return, Ordonez would help fund Canseco’s upcoming movie. G&A think this is shady and wonder just how much we can believe from Mr. Canseco.

* ESPN NBA insider Tim Legler checked in. Legs discussed the Suns’ rebounding and defensive deficiencies and how no team would ever part with a skilled big man before the trading deadline if the Suns called to inquire.

* The Boston Globe released a list of Phoenix “Things to Do” for all Patriots fans who are coming out for the Super Bowl. if you like taking a vortex tour, bird watching, or visiting Bed & Breakfasts in Benson, you’re in luck. If you have a life, you’re apparently out of luck. G&A rip the list and wonder if the author has ever traveled to Arizona. We took calls on what the Bostonians REALLY should do when visiting our beautiful state.

* We were also joined by NFL Hall of Famer, 7-time Pro-Bowler, former U.S. Congressman, and legendary Seahawks receiver Steve Largent. Largent discussed his career, getting traded from the Oilers to the Seahawks, playing in Seattle, and how the game has recently evolved into a passing league.

The FBR Does Not Need Tiger

Here’s what went down Wednesday on G&A

* Short show before Suns-Timberwolves basketball in Minneapolis.

* We got a full re-cap of Gambo’s big night out at the Hannah Montana concert. Oh, his 7-year daughter was there, too. Gambo went backstage, got autographs, hugs, etc. He also ran into former Diamondback Luis Gonzalez who called in to report that he saw Gambo “singing along” last night. Gambo did not deny the report.

* The Suns beat the hapless Bucks, but not with much help from the bench. Gambo says this is just how Mike D’Antoni uses his short rotation and he’s not going to change. G&A agree Raja Bell is playing his best basketball of the season. Is a minor tweak to the roster coming? Gambo thinks the Celtics have the best shot at landing Damon Stoudemire because they can offer him something the Suns can’t, playing time. Why would a player want to come to Phoenix to waste away on the bench like Jim Jackson and Jalen Rose.

* Phoenix Coyotes GM Don Maloney joined the guys. The resurgent ‘Yotes are in the hunt for a playoff spot. The club agreed to terms on a 3-year contract extension yesterday with goalie Ilya Brizgalov.

* ASU AD Lisa Love checked in for her weekly segment. She previewed this week’s men’s hoops home stand against Washington tomorrow and 6th-ranked Washington State Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena.

* Toy manufacturer and designer Todd McFarlane revealed some of his new releases that we will see during Super Bowl week.

* The FBR is next week and Tiger Woods won’t be there, again, TV numbers and attendance sky-rocket when Tiger is in the field, but the Tiger-less FBR continues to thrive. Gambo thinks no single athlete has a greater impact on their sport than Tiger. Ash thinks the FBR is smart for attracting more than just “golf fans” to the week-long popular event in north Scottsdale. We took calls, many feel the FBR doesn’t need Woods and vice-versa.

Tomorrow: ESPN NBA analyst Tim Legler

Top-Flight Lock-Down Cover Corners In High Demand

Here’s what went down Tuesday on G&A:

* Off early this afternoon for Suns-Bucks basketball from The Bradley Center.

* BIG night tonight as Gambo’s daughter is escorting him to the Hannah Montana concert in Glendale - Gambo can’t wait! He is fully prepared to sing along to every song and spend at least $70 on a concert t-shirt for himself. We are expecting a full concert review Wednesday at 1:00 p.m.

* Tony Dungy is coming back to coach the Colts - he will stay in Indy, while his family will live in Florida during the season. Gambo thinks this is a bad idea, especially when Dungy always preaches “family first.” Ash thinks the decision should be left up to him and he’s fine with Dungy returning. Both agree life is juggling act with your family, job, etc. There aren’t many higher-stress jobs than being a professional head coach - we took calls on this hot-button topic.

* More than 100 major league baseball players allegedly have ADD and can now legally acquire the drug “speed” thru a loop-hole in the MLB drug policy - we took calls. G&A agree this is a joke, but athletes are smarter than we often give them credit for. Ash wonders if drug abuse in baseball will ever stop and players will just play the game tarnish-free – doubtful.

* Stats show the NFL is turning more and more into a passing league with less focus on the run game - sacks are down around the league. Gambo thinks there is no longer a true GREAT defense in the NFL. G&A both agree this is why top-flight lock-down cover corners are in such high demand on the free agent market.

Tomorrow: Todd McFarlane & Lisa Love

Cassell to the Suns?

Here’s what went down Monday on G&A:

*The Super Bowl is set. Giants vs. Patriots in 13 days. Gambo is (obviously) excited “his” Giants are on their way to Glendale, Ash not so much. The guys debated whether these are the two of the most-hated coaches in the NFL. G&A broke down yesterday’s championship games; both threw props to Phillip Rivers for his gutsy effort on two bad knees. Ash called out LaDainian Tomlinson for not “toughing it out”, and Gambo thinks LT’s knee injury was legit. We also discussed the again uncertain future of Brett Favre.

*We were joined by New York Giants’ offensive lineman Greg Ruegamer, the former ASU star will be playing in his second Super Bowl, oddly enough, against the team he played for in his first.

*G&A also chatted with the great NFL & College Hall Of Famer Jim Brown. Brown threw big props to Bill Belichick and says the Pats’ head coach is misunderstood by the media and underappreciated for the way he coaches and deals with players on, and off the field…Brown also discussed life on the big screen and how is attempting to clean up the gang situation in Los Angeles thru his Amer-I-Can program.

*The Suns are again hot. G&A would like to see D.J. Strawberry get more minutes. Ash likes his size in the backcourt. Is Sam Cassell the right fit for the Suns should the Clips decide to buy him out? G&A agree he would be a great fit here, much better than the under-sized Damon Stoudemire.

Tomorrow: Ed “Too Tall” Jones

Dancin’ Devils

Here’s what went down Friday on G&A:

* The ASU hoops team gets a HUGE double-overtime win over Cal in Berkeley…G&A agree this team is officially legit…Ash thinks 20 wins will get the Devils dancin’…Gambo thinks Sun Devil guard James Harden is a better player than Jerryd Bayless…we took calls on Herb Sendek’s revival of ASU hoops in Tempe…

* Speaking of Jerryd Bayless…his Arizona Wildcats are 1-4 in the Pac…G&A agree the ‘Cats are now a bubble team…whatever Kevin O’Neill is doing…it isn’t working…

* We were joined by Stanford head coach Trent Johnson…BIG early season showdown between the 14-2 Devils and the 14-3 Cardinal tomorrow night in Palo Alto…Johnson thinks Harden is a tremendous talent and might be the best freshman in the Pac…

* The Suns get a nice win over the Lakers at Staples to move back into first-place in the Pacific…Gambo thinks this was a quality road win, Ash isn’t as thrilled…G&A debate whether Mike D’Antoni was sending Amare a message by keeping him on the bench in crunch-time…both agree the Suns should pursue Joakim Noah which would allow STAT to play power forward and D’Antoni to stay “fast” on the court…

* As first reported here, the Dbacks came to terms with five players on one-year deals, including Gold Glove shortstop Orlando Hudson…Gambo thinks it’s smart Josh Byrnes’ locked down O-Dog for next season…the club will then take a wait-and-see approach before making a decision next winter on Hudson…

* The guys chatted with Bears’ Pro Bowl returner Devin Hester…Hester talked about his amazing knack for returning kicks and punts…he hopes to see more time on offense for Lovie Smith next season…

* G&A broke down the championship games this weekend…G&A (like everyone else) both think the Patriots will roll the ‘Bolts…the guys also agree the Giants match-up very well with the Packers…Gambo will take the G-men, Ash still likes Green Bay…the frigid weather could play a factor in both games…

Here’s what went down Wednesday on G&A

Here’s what went down Wednesday on G&A:

* Gambo was off, so Johnny V. filled in with Ash.

* Ash signed his Girl Scout cookie LOI with Burnsy’s daughter this afternoon.

* The show was dominated by the Suns who lost to the lowly Clippers last night. The Suns are now officially in 2nd place in the Pacific. The guys agree the biggest problem is on the defensive end of the court. Ash isn’t sure this brutal stretch of games is getting the Suns “postseason-ready.”

* We were joined by Lakers Forward Luke Walton. Walton still thinks the Suns are very good team that can go deep in the playoffs. He also couldn’t believe his UA Wildcats were knocked off by the Sun Devils last week.

* Big week ahead for the Top 25 ASU Sun Devils. ASU plays at Cal Thursday and Stanford Saturday. We were joined by Golden Bear head coach Ben Braun. ASU Athletic Director Lisa Love also joined the guys.

* The WAC is cracking down. New Mexico State fans can no longer chant “nice shot, a-hole!” when an opposing player makes a free throw. For the record, the Spanish version will not be allowed either…go figure.

* O.J. Simpson got ripped by Judge Jackie Glass - then she doubled his bail today in Vegas. The guys agree “The Juice” is an idiot for not stepping out of the spotlight when he could have. Ash thinks O.J. is off to jail.

* Cardinals safety Terrence Holt also joined the guys to discuss his first season with the Red Birds, the championship games this weekend, and his charity flag football tournament February 2nd in Avondale.

Tomorrow: Gambo returns

Guests: former NFL greats Dwight Clark & Tony Dorsett, NBA analyst Tim Legler
