Where the Suns went wrong

Here’s what went down Monday on G&A…

Show dominated by Suns-Spurs Game 1. Plain and simple, the Suns let one slip away Saturday at the AT&T Center. G&A picked up the pieces this afternoon and debated whether Mike D’Antoni should have fouled in a couple late-game situations when the Suns had the lead. Both feel Amare Stoudemire should shoulder much of the blame for not playing smarter and keeping himself on the floor in the overtime sessions. G&A applaud Greg Popovich for playing “Hack-A-Shaq” late in the fourth quarter and altering the Suns’ momentum down the stretch. Gambo still believes the Suns will win the series.

The Diamondbacks won another series, but lost yesterday’s game to the Padres as Randy Johnson suffers his first loss of the season. Gambo thinks Bob Melvin needs to keep a close eye on Unit around the 6th inning because when his stuff goes, it really goes. G&A also discussed Greg Maddux’s struggles at Bank One Ballpark/Chase Field. The future HOF’er was touched up by the red-hot Dbacks’ lineup Friday night and denied his 350th win.

We were joined by former UofA All-American cornerback Antoine Cason. The Jim Thorpe Award winner is expected to be a first or second-round pick on Saturday.

Tomorrow: ESPN baseball analyst Tim Kurkjian, Giants centerfielder Aaron Rowand, and ASU draft prospect Mike Pollak

Gambo called it a night a little too early

Here’s what went down today on G&A

* The waiting is nearly over. Suns and Spurs Game one tomorrow in San Antonio. G&A broke down the series match-ups and shared their thoughts on how the latest chapter of this saga may play out over the next couple weeks.

* Head coach Mike D’Antoni joined the guys from San Antonio. Coach Mike says his team knows what to expect from the Spurs and vice versa. One thing he did guarantee was a very physical series.

* The Padres did the Diamondbacks a favor last night by losing to the Rockies, and taxing their bullpen, in a 22-inning, 658-pitch, 6 hour and 16 minute marathon last night at Petco Park. Skipper Bud Black joined the guys to talk about the classic and share his thoughts on future Hall of Famer Greg Maddux going for his 350th win tonight at Chase Field against the D-Backs.

* Gambo proudly announced that he watched 20 innings of the game before calling it a night. Ash ripped Gambo for not sticking it out to the end and compared it to going to a movie and leaving 15 minutes before the conclusion because you were too tired to stay.

* Speaking of the D-Backs, manager Bob Melvin checked in for his weekly visit. BoMel has few complaints about his 11-4 team and says Randy Johnson felt good after his first start on Monday in San Francisco.

* We were also joined by NFL Hall of Famer YA Tittle. He looked back on his career with the Giants and how the game has evolved over the years. Tittle is remembered by many fans for his bloodied face in a black and white photo. Some believe it is one of the most famous shots in sports history. G&A took calls on what listeners thought about the topic.

* Gambo’s daughter racked up 13,600 text messages in one month. That’s about 450 texts a day. Good thing Gambo has the unlimited texting plan because it would have cost him $2842! Do I really need to say anything else?

Monday: Re-cap of Suns-Spurs Game 1, NFL draft prospect and former UofA star Antoine Cason, and Giants centerfielder Aaron Rowand

Suns Get The Spurs In Round One

Here’s what went down Thursday on G&A…

The long and, at times, trying NBA regular season is over and the Suns will meet the defending champion Spurs in the first-round this weekend in the Alamo City. G&A both like Phoenix to advance. Gambo thinks the Suns have cleared that “mental hurdle” of beating the Spurs- thanks to Shaquille O’Neal. He also feels Amare has matured since Shaq’s arrival and will be the best player on the floor this series. Ash believes containing Tony Parker will be the biggest key for Mike D’Antoni’s team.

Our ESPN NBA analyst Tim Legler shared his thoughts on all the playoff match-ups. “Legs” also likes the Suns to advance thanks to the “Shaq Factor.” He isn’t sure anyone in the West can beat the Celtics or the Pistons.

Astros shortstop Miguel Tejada admitted he’s 33, not 31 as was previously believed. G&A discussed if this is a big deal or simply just another poverty-stricken Dominican kid doing anything he can to improve his life through baseball.

A Florida football recruit is in trouble. Well, sort of. The high school senior tight end who committed to the Gators accidentally broke the National Championship trophy when recently posing for a photo. Good news. The $35,000 glass football was insured.

We were joined by a trio of Diamondbacks this afternoon. Eric Byrnes discussed his 12-game hitting streak and that sad excuse for a mustache. Right fielder Justin Upton shared his thoughts on the transition from center to right and how he approached his first full season in the majors this spring. Conor Jackson also stopped by for a visit. CoJax says J-Up could go down as one of the greatest players of his generation.

Tomorrow: Suns head coach Mike D’Antoni LIVE from San Antonio, D-Backs skipper Bob Melvin, Padres manager Bud Black, NFL HOF’er YA Tittle, and ASU AD Lisa Love

Rockets Please, No Spurs

Here’s what went down today on G&A…

* Short show after Diamondbacks’ baseball this afternoon on Sports 620 KTAR.

* D-Backs improve to 11-4 with 4-1 win over the Giants. G&A discussed the amazing start by the Snakes’ rotation. Club returns home for a 3-game series against NL West rival San Diego on Friday.

* We will know tonight (finally) who the Suns will draw in the opening round of the playoffs. Ash believes Mike D’Antoni’s club could handle the Rockets without a problem. Do the Suns really want the Spurs in the 1st-round? Both agree the Lakers are one of the worst #1 seeds in NBA history.

Tomorrow: ESPN NBA analyst Tim Legler will preview the playoffs

The Sky Is The Limit For Upton

Here’s what went down Monday on G&A:

* Jeff Immelman won The Masters yesterday. G&A discussed why people don’t pull for the underdog like they do in other sports like college basketball (James Madison) or college football (Appalachian State). Ash doesn’t think Immelman is a “no-name” and Tiger Woods agrees. Gambo said he lost interest after Tiger was eliminated from a shot at the green jacket.

* The rivalry continues. Construction workers unearthed a David Ortiz jersey outside of the new Yankee Stadium. G&A think this is quite funny. Ash thinks they should have left the jersey buried. Gambo doesn’t believe the superstitious Yankee fans and players would tolerate that.

* Carmelo Anthony is back in the news for all the wrong reasons. The Nuggets’ forward was pulled over early this morning in Denver for possible DUI. Gambo wonders why million-dollar athletes don’t have personal drivers and if Anthony is truly committed to being a super-star. Ash thinks ‘Melo needs to watch his back and focus on trying to get the Nuggets in the playoffs.

* We were joined by our ESPN baseball analyst Tim Kurkjian who shared his thoughts on the mystery Ortiz jersey and the Diamondbacks’ hot start. Kurkjian thinks the D-Backs are (right now) the best team in the National League.

* Speaking of the NL West-leading Snakes, G&A discussed the unlimited potential of Justin Upton. Gambo thinks J-Up could be one of the best ever when his career comes to an end. They also previewed tonight’s season-debut of Randy Johnson at AT&T Park.

-HOF’er Tommy Lasorda checked in to share some great baseball memories and discuss the Joe Torre Era in LA.

Tomorrow: D-Backs afternoon baseball equals no Gambo & Ash
