Down go the champs

Here’s what went down Friday on G&A

* Down Go the Champs! The Lakers have eliminated the defending champion Spurs and now wait (and rest) for the Boston-Detroit winner. G&A agree Kobe Bryant is the most ridiculous basketball player on the planet. Gambo thinks LA is the clear-cut favorite to win it all with a bench filled with great role players. Ash sees big network ratings with the Lakers back in the finals and thinks this will be Kobe’s title if he wins it. With all the power in the west, Gambo hopes the Suns blow up their roster and start over. G&A agree the Spurs had a great run, but it might be over in the Alamo City.

* The Skid Continues Conor Jackson’s big error opened the floodgates to another loss for the slumping Diamondbacks. Gambo thinks Josh Byrnes may look into acquiring a good, defensive, late-inning 1st baseman. G&A agree Pittsburgh’s Doug Mientkiewicz would be a perfect fit. Ash thinks the Giants have proven they can be a player in a suddenly wide-open NL West. G&A agree the losing streak has been, for the most part, a total team effort.

* Big Night For Big Unit Randy Johnson got another tough-luck no-decision against the Giants last night at Chase Field. The Big Unit struck out nine and tied the embattled Roger Clemens for second on the all-time list. Gambo feels Randy could pitch another season if his groove on the mound continues the remainder of the season.

* G&A rip TV Two-A-Day contestant Tammy Trickey and her boyfriend for failing to call-in on time for TV Two-A-Days. The really bad news is tomorrow is Tammy’s birthday. Oops.

Monday: Cards’ cornerback-turned-safety Antrel Rolle.

On Steve’s time

Here’s what went down Thursday on G&A

* Gambo made his return from Disneyland.

* Taking Their Time…Gambo reported the Suns interviewed Tyrone Corbin for a second time today, Elston Turner will be in-town to chat tomorrow, and Terry Porter is expected to get a second visit, as well. Ash likes the fact that Kerr is taking his time with the hiring process. Turner is getting higher and higher on Gambo’s wish list. Ash’s top choice is still Porter. Gambo wonders if you go with the experience of Porter or the defensive expertise of Turner.

* Is Tonight the Night? G&A discussed what could be the end for the World Champion Spurs. G&A agree it couldn’t happen to a better bunch of floppers. Speaking of floppers, the NBA says there’s going to crack-down on it. Ash thinks this is going to be tough for refs to decipher. Gambo wants to know what the NBA is going to do get the officiating more consistent.

* Our ESPN NBA analyst Tim Legler shared his thoughts on the Celtics 106-102 Game 5 win over the Pistons and the one-game revival of Ray Allen. Legs also previewed Spurs-Lakers Game 5 tonight at Staples Center and chimed in on the on-going Suns’ coach search.

* Cardinals’ defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast checked in to break down the second week of OTA’s which wrapped up this afternoon in Tempe. He also discussed Darnell Dockett’s holdout and the early progress of first-round pick, cornerback Dominique Rogers-Cromartie.

* Kimbo Mania!…YouTube legend Kimboslice hits network television this weekend when he faces off against some guy named James Thompson in the cage on the same week he graced the cover of ESPN Magazine. Gambo thinks Kimbo has a chance to be a legitimate fighter. Ash loves Kimbo and thinks he has a chance to be the best cage fighter ever. Both agree his popularity will only increase…as long as he doesn’t lose anytime soon.

* Struggles Continue…the D-backs are slumping on the mound and at the plate. G&A agree the biggest concern is the club’s high strikeout total so early in the season. Ash doesn’t think Dan Haren has lived up to the expectations of trading away 5 top-tier prospects. Gambo thinks he’s been only ok to this point, but still likes the trade.

Did the Lakers slip by with a win?

Here’s what went down Wednesday on a technically-challenged G&A…

Sports 620 KTAR’s Jon Bloom filled in for the vacationing Gambo

* Dose of Their Own Medicine. LA survived Game 4 last night in San Antonio to take a 3-1 series lead. Ash thinks Derek Fisher and the Lakers got away with one. Bloomer didn’t think Brent Barry “sold” the controversial collision like a “true Spur” would and felt the no-call was the right call. Ash hates both teams, but hates the Spurs more. Both wouldn’t have any problem kicking dirt on the Spurs’ grave- which could happen tomorrow night at Staples Center.

* Bloomer & Ash debated whether Robert Horry will one day land in the Hall of Fame. Both wonder why “Big Shot Bob” doesn’t shoot anymore.

* ASU AD Lisa Love checked in to preview the baseball regional this weekend (Sun Devils play Stony Brook on Friday in Tempe) and the women’s CWS (Sun Devils play Alabama tomorrow in Oklahoma City). She also discussed the sudden revival of the ASU wrestling program.

* World Series of Poker Star David Negreanu joined the show. The former high school drop-out has made nearly $10 million in his decade-long career. “Kid Poker” ranks second amongst all-time money winners on the WPT circuit.

* Vai Sikahema is going to fight Jose Canseco. Ash & Bloomer discussed and wondered just how far Canseco has fallen.

Tomorrow: the return of Gambo.

Guests: ESPN NBA analyst Tim Legler and Cards’ offensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast

The D-Backs are glad to be back home

Here’s what went down Tuesday on G&A…

* Coyotes’ captain Shane Doan filled in for the vacationing Gambo.

* Continued Road Struggles. The Diamondbacks return home tonight after a 2-5 East Coast road trip without the services of the struggling Eric Byrnes who was placed on the DL this afternoon. Ash & Doan are amazed at the season Chipper Jones is putting together. Doan thinks the D-Backs’ cold bats will break out this week being back at home.

* NL Worst. What was initially thought to be one of the toughest divisions in baseball, the NL West has been a huge disappointment through the early part of the season. Doan wonders what happened to the Rockies this off-season coming off their amazing World Series run. Ash has no doubts it’s a two-horse race between the D-Backs and Los Angeles.

* Our baseball insider Tim Kurkjian from ESPN checked in for his weekly segment to breakdown the D-Backs’ rough East Coast trip, the red-hot play of Chipper Jones, and the last-place New York Yankees.

* State of the Coyotes. The NHL playoffs are in full-swing and the Coyotes are again watching from home. Doaner shared his thoughts on the season that was and why the NHL is struggling among the other top sports. He also talked about playing for “The Great One” and where the franchise is headed moving forward.

* New Cardinals’ linebacker Clark Haggins discussed his first season of OTA’s which continue this week in Tempe. Haggins came over in the off-season from Pittsburgh where he collected five tackles and a sack in the Steelers’ Super Bowl XL win over the Seahawks.

* Big Brown Back in Town. Big Brown returned to the track today as he continues his quest for the Triple Crown. Doan, whose family owns horses, feels Big Brown’s injured hoof isn’t too severe. The guys debated if it would be a big risk having Big Brown race and risk further injury or not race at all and miss out at a chance for the Triple Crown. Ash wonders how much a week off will hurt the horse.

* Eric Byrnes is on the DL with a bad hamstring. Doaner says hamstring injuries are tough to play through and rest is really the only remedy.

Tomorrow: Sports 620 KTAR’s Jon Bloom is in for Gambo.

We’ll be joined by D-Backs’ skipper Bob Melvin & ASU AD Lisa Love

Is Barbosa leaving the Suns?

Here’s what went down Friday on G&A…

* Dave Burns pinch-hit for the vacationing Gambo.

* LB heading out? Leandro Barbosa spoke out to a Brazilian newspaper saying he would be willing to accept a trade to the Knicks to be reunited with Mike D’Antoni and his staff in New York. Burnsy and Ash wonder if LB knows something we don’t-at least not yet. Burnsy wonders if Barbosa would even fit in with the new coaching staff that Steve Kerr assembles. Ash thinks a fresh coaching staff can turn LB into a serviceable, but never great, defender.

* ASU Wrestling is Back! ASU AD Lisa Love confirmed ASU wrestling is back. A group of anonymous donors stepped up to put the program back on the map, or mat, so-to-speak, pouring in millions of dollars. Burnsy thinks ASU wrestling has a small, but die hard, core of fans. Burnsy and Ash are surprised the program has been revived.

* Back on the Bump Doug Davis back on the hill tonight for the first time since conquering cancer. Burnsy hopes the Dbacks’ can wake up the bats on the road for once. Ash wonders how poorly the Dbacks would be if they didn’t play in the severely over-rated NL West.

* Overpaid! Burnsy threw out the question: who is a bigger waste of money, Eric Byrnes or Boris Diaw? Ash thinks Byrnes is the bigger mistake because he has peaked and won’t get any better than last season’s good, but not great, stats. He thinks Diaw has the potential to be a very good NBA player. Diaw’s lack of effort is more than irritating. Byrnes at least continues to play hard every single game.

* Diamondbacks’ analyst Mark Grace checks in from Atlanta to preview the weekend series against the Braves and discuss the club’s current 3-game losing streak. He also shared his thoughts on Doug Davis’ return to the rotation following his successful bout with cancer. Grace will also be a part of FSN’s “Salute to the Troops” during Monday morning’s telecast.

* Cards’ starting linebacker Gerald Hayes joined the show in to discuss the first week of OTA’s which concluded yesterday in Tempe. Hayes started all 16 games last season and collected a career-high 115 tackles.

No show Monday. Coyotes’ captain Shane Doan sits in with Ash Tuesday.

Hate him or love him, one must respect Kobe Bryant’s game

Here’s what went down Thursday on G&A:

* Short show this afternoon before Diamondbacks’ baseball in south Florida.

* Laker Revival! The Lakers erased a 20-point 3rd-quarter lead to shock the Spurs at Staples Center. Ash is still perplexed as to which team to pull for in this series. Gambo would love to see a Lakers-Celtics Final match up. Gambo feels, as much as people hate him, they must respect the amazing skill of Kobe Bryant who erupted in the 2nd half. Gambo thinks Kobe is better than LeBron and every GM in the NBA would agree. Ash thinks he’s crazy.

* Our ESPN NBA analyst Tim Legler checked in LIVE from Boston for his weekly segment to break down the Lakers dramatic comeback win over the Spurs last night at Staples Center and preview Pistons-Celtics Game 2 tonight at the TD Banknorth Garden. He also told us why Ray Allen continues to struggle in the playoffs and what the Bulls might do with top overall pick (see Michael Beasley).

* Who Could Ask for More? The NHL has it’s “dream match-up” for the finals with Pittsburgh taking on Detroit. G&A discuss if anyone actually cares about this or will be able to find the games on the obscure Versus TV network. Gambo thinks the NHL can survive, but must know its pecking order in the sports food chain. Ash feels the NHL strike set the league back, but watching hockey in HD is tough to beat.

Tomorrow: Burnsy in for Gambo, we’ll be joined by Cards’ linebacker Gerald Hayes.

Shut up and play

Here’s what went down Wednesday on G&A:

Short show Wednesday afternoon before Diamondbacks baseball

Fix is in? Ash wonders how the Bulls miraculously landed the No. 1 pick in the lottery with a slim 1.7 percent chance of landing the selection. Ash thinks the Bulls would be wise to move Kirk Heinrich for a proven big man and take Chicago-raised Derrick Rose with the No. 1 pick. G&A agree Rose will be a better pro than Michael Beasley. Gambo confirms the Suns will not trade down or trade out of their 15th overall pick, but might look to move up in the draft.

Shut Up & Play! The Cardinals OTA’s are underway and Darnell Dockett and Anquan Boldin are AWOL. Gambo thinks rookies are making way too much money (see Matt Ryan) and is sick of athletes already under contract holding out for more money. Ash is fine if teams want to play top players (LaDainian Tomlinson, Peyton Manning) top dollars, but wonders why the Cardinals would ever consider ripping up Dockett’s deal when he just signed it last year. In short, one Pro Bowl doesn’t mean huge money.

Soccer, errr, football chat: Manchester United beat Chelsey to win the Champions League in Moscow. G&A briefly broke down the biggest soccer game of the year which went to a shootout.

Talk to the skipper: Bob Melvin: D-Backs’ skipper Bob Melvin checked in for his weekly segment to preview Brandon Webb’s quest for his 10th victory and the D-Backs’ inability to score runs on the road so far this season.

G&A also caught up with new USF basketball coach and former Kansas star guard Rex Walters. Walters discussed his brief acting career (he appeared in “Blue Chips” with some guy named Shaq), KU beating Memphis for the National Championship, and coaching in the underrated West Coast Conference.
