Here’s what went down Friday on G&A

* Three point five hour show this afternoon following Diamondbacks’ baseball on KTAR.

* The Mailman Does Not Deliver Karl Malone has no connection to his son Demetrious Bell, who was drafted in the 7^th round by the Buffalo Bills following a successful career at Northwestern State. Malone impregnated Bell’s mother (who was 12 at the time) when he was a sophomore at Louisiana Tech. ”The Mailman” has never spoken or supported Bell since the day he was born. G&A are amazed at Malone’s actions and wonder how he could be so cruel and so sick. Ash feels this type of behavior happens quite a bit in the “deep south.” G&A applaud Bell’s perseverance and hopes he succeeds with the Bills.

* Committing Too Early? Michael Avery recently committed to play basketball at Kentucky. Avery is 15 and has never visited the Lexington campus (he doesn’t even know what high school he’s going to attend yet?). G&A debated if this even makes sense since the commitment is non-binding. Ash thinks the “early bird gets the worm” and that’s why colleges do this (see Ben Howland recruiting Kevin Love as an Oregon 8^th-grader). Gambo wonders if Avery becomes a target since he committed so early.

* Our ESPN NBA analyst Tim Legler gave us the latest on Mike D’Antoni’s next coaching destination, the Spurs big bounce back win over the Hornets, and the struggles of LeBron James. He also shared his thoughts on Karl Malone and the image he portrays.

Here’s what went down Wednesday on G&A:

Stein Gets a Date! All-around good guy and station employee Eric Stein has a date next weekend and Gambo hooked him up with a pair of primo Diamondbacks’ tickets. G&A debate the idea of putting them on the kiss-cam. Not much else they can do.

Doll Gate. White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen is in hot water again over the controversy surrounding the questionable “slump-buster” statue that he erected in the Sox club house. Now a female reporter in Chicago is offended by Guillen’s actions and let her case be known. Gambo doesn’t feel this is a big deal and the reporter needs to lighten up.

Logjam. The Diamondbacks are weighing options for Chad Tracy, who is expected to come off the disabled list shortly. Ash would like to see BoMel showcase Tracy and try to deal him before the deadline. Gambo thinks third base is Mark Reynolds’ to lose.

Ten-time All Star Clyde Drexler, member of the Basketball Hall of Fame, and 1995 World Champion guard with the Houston Rockets discussed his amazing career and winning a gold medal with the “Dream Team” in the 1992 Olympics. Drexler averaged more than 20 points per game in his 15-year career. He is in town participating in the Phoenix Celebrity Golf Classic with proceeds benefitting the Foundation for Blind Children.

The “Big Unit” Randy Johnson checked in to discuss his victory over the Phillies Wednesday night at Chase Field. Johnson struck out six in 6 innings while notching his 286th career win.

Here’s what went down Monday on G&A…

Coach Speak, The Suns have given permission to Mike D’Antoni to pursue other coaching options. Gambo thinks D’Antoni will end up in New York because they can offer him the big-money and knows Mike can parlay his new gig into a monster contract elsewhere. Ash thinks the Suns roster needs a tweaking-including a lock-down 2-guard. Gambo says Jeff Van Gundy and Avery Johnson will not be options as D’Antoni’s replacement.

Drinking & Boating. Bears running back Cedric Benson is the latest professional athlete to get into hot water. Gambo wonders if we should keep a tracker each day of the athletes busted. G&A agree it’s time for the Bears to part ways with the underachieving Benson.

Tragedy at the Track. Eight Belles had to be euthanized on the track following the Kentucky Derby Saturday when both front ankles were broken beyond repair. NBC opted not to show it during the telecast, now PETA is involved. Ash feels it was the right, albeit, tough decision. Gambo thinks this is an even bigger story because it happened at the Kentucky Derby…

We were joined by Dominique Rogers-Cromartie. The Cards first-round pick in this year’s draft checked in to discuss his first mini-camp which wrapped up yesterday and his expectations going into his rookie season with the Red Birds.

Randall McDaniel joined the guys. The former Agua Fria High, ASU, and NFL star was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame last week. McDaniel made 12 Pro Bowls and was named to the All-Pro team nine times in his 13-year career with the Vikings and Bucs following his time in Tempe.
