Micah gets sent down to Tucson

Here’s what went down Tuesday on G&A

Gambo & Ash were LIVE from Arizona Cardinals Training Camp 2008 in Flagstaff: Day II

Owings’ Issues Micah Owings was touched up for 8 earned runs in only 3 innings last night against the Padres. Gambo doesn’t want to see Owings in the rotation for the stretch run of the season and thinks he’s scared to throw inside after recent control issues. Ash still thinks he can be a solid starter like he was towards the end of last year and early this season when he started 4-0. Both agree Micah’s mechanics need tweaking and know he now has little trade value.

Second-year Cardinals wide receiver and return specialist Steve Breaston shared his secrets to success in the return game and how he improved his receiving skills and routes this off-season.

Still Special The Cards had an up-and-down season a year ago on special teams. Breaston was an added weapon in the return game, but G&A agree kicker Neil Rackers must be more consistent-especially with a tougher schedule than a year ago.

Our ESPN baseball insider Tim Kurkjian shared his thoughts on the Angels acquiring Mark Teixiera this afternoon, other possible players on the move before Thursday’s deadline, and why he feels the Diamondbacks will prevail in the wide open NL West.

Former Diamondback, now starting leftfielder for the San Diego Padres Scott Hairston joined the guys. Hairston is second on the team in homers with 17 and tied for the team-lead in triples with three. The earthquake last night in southern California scared him to death.

No Deal The Anaheim Angels completed a trade for Braves’ slugger Mark Teixiera this afternoon. G&A wonder if the D-Backs will be better off in the long run with .300-hitting Chad Tracy at first and white-hot Conor Jackson in left. Both agree they could strengthen their bullpen by picking up another left-handed set-up guy.

ESPN reporter and good friend of the program Pedro Gomez checked in from Milwaukee to preview tonight’s big Cubs-Brewers game at Miller Park and share his thoughts on the pending trade deadline which is just around the corner. Gomez thinks the NL West is anyone’s to win.

Down to Tucson The Diamondbacks ran out of patience with Micah Owings optioning him to Triple-AAA Tucson this afternoon. G&A hope this will help Owings correct his mechanics and build up his confidence after seeing his ERA balloon to nearly six.

Cards’ head coach Ken Whisenhunt sat down to discuss last years’ 8-8 season and share his goals for training camp and his expectations moving forward towards the regular season opener September 7th against the 49ers.

Tomorrow: G&A Cards’ 2008 Training Camp Tour: Day III

Cardinals camp begins

Here’s what went down Monday on G&A…

Gambo & Ash were LIVE at Cardinals’ Training Camp 2008 in Flagstaff.

Cards’ starting quarterback Matt Leinart sat down with Gambo & Ash to discuss his controversial summer, his now fully rehabilitated shoulder which caused him to miss most of last season, and his thoughts on entering his third training camp here in Flagstaff.

Big Season. Matt Leinart is at a cross-road early in his career. His off-season was marred with controversy. G&A debated if Leinart is the answer and if he is committed enough to be the quarterback Ken Whisenhunt and the Cards think he will be. G&A both want to see Leinart succeed with the Red Birds but know Kurt Warner is watching very closely from the sideline. Ash thinks the division is wide open. Gambo thinks the NFC West is one of the weakest in the NFL.

Red Birds’ starting tight end Leonard Pope discussed his break-out season last year and expectations going into the upcoming year both as a receiver and as a blocker.

Cardinals’ starting cornerback Eric Green previewed the upcoming season and shared his life as a cornerback in the NFL.

Getting Closer? Gambo is reporting the D-Backs are closing in on a deal for Braves’ slugger Mark Teixiera and it won’t cost them Conor Jackson, as some have reported. The deal would send Chad Tracy and a minor leaguer to Atlanta. The guys love the possible deal-even if they have him for only the remainder of the season before he signs with another team via free-agency. Both agree the D-Backs would make a strong push to re-sign Teixiera this winter-especially with Orlando Hudson and Brandon Lyon possibly not returning next season.

We were also joined by Sports 620 KTAR reporter Johnny V. who re-capped this afternoon’s practice here at NAU which included the club working out former ASU tight end Brent Miller. The club practiced through light showers instead of heading inside to the Walkup Skydome.

Tomorrow: ESPN baseball insider Tim Kurkjian and Padres’ outfielder Scott Hairston

Pac-10 Media Madness

Here’s what happend Thursday on Gambo & Ash:

Ash is on vacation and Gambo flew solo.

* Pac 10-Media Madness! Seven, yes, seven guests joined Gambo courtesy of Johnny V and his expensive long distance phone bill. Four spoke with Gambo today, as Pete Carroll of USC talked about the juggernaut that is Trojan Football, one that hopefully will get a challenge from year two of the Erickson era. Dennis Erickson doesn’t seem to think so. He told Gambo that the Pac-10 comes down to “USC and then everyone else.” Included among the group would be Mike Riley and Oregon State, who also joined Gambo as did Jim Harbaugh from Stanford. They did beat USC!

* Josh Childress may be a trend setter. No, not that god awful hairstyle. (Least, I hope not). He could be the first of many non-NBA stars being paid like stars in Europe. Gambo wouldn’t be surprised, although it is surprising to him how Europe has changed from the place where guys who couldn’t cut it in the NBA came to play. Who better than Paul Shirley to talk about this. Not only could he not cut it in the NBA, but he also plays in Europe! Just kidding, but Gambo wasn’t when he asked Paul to set him up with Shirley’s girlfriend’s sister.

* Day 2 of Cards camp didn’t go quite as smoothly as Day 1. That is unless you like cornerstone franchise players accusing you of lying and saying they will not discuss a long-term deal anymore. Yes, Anquan Boldin is a very unhappy man. Gambo isn’t happy with the signal this sends around the league (or that Rod Graves remains as GM), but he does sympathize a bit with the organization since Boldin’s deal runs through 2010. In any case, this does provide a major distraction. Much more than Leinart’s beer bong, or Dominic Rogers-Cromartie’s holdout. Wait, maybe that was Graves’ plan all along…

Tito Ortiz stops by the studio

Here’s what went down on Wednesday on G&A…

OK, Gambo and Tito Ortiz didn’t have their big throw down, but Ortiz was nice enough to stop in-studio and spend a great length of time with G&A. His greatest fight: The 2nd matchup with Chuck Liddell, even though it ended up in a loss. Ortiz is confident that he’d come up with a win against Mike Tyson in his prime in an MMA match. In the boxing ring, not so much, as Ortiz feels MMA and boxing are like “checkers and chess. “ He also feels MMA fighters are not being compensated commensurate to the growth of the sport and the growth in profits for the UFC. It doesn’t sound like he’ll be back in the UFC anytime soon, but Ortiz does plan on fighting, and would love a rematch with Frank Shamrock, who beat him in a fight almost 10 years ago.

The D-Backs made a big trade yesterday - and now Bob Melvin may have a logjam of arms in the bullpen. Melvin says a deal for Jon Rauch would’ve been sooner, but basically it came down to parting, grudgingly, with Emilio Bonifacio. With Rauch in-tow, Melvin feels that Tony Pena will be the primary 7th inning guy, although match-ups and workload could call Chad Qualls into action again. (Heads up!) Melvin said he spoke with Qualls about the possibility of this reduced role, and that Qualls was OK with it. Melvin is not-so-sure about the future of Micah Owings, who has seen some action in the bullpen, with Yusmeiro Petit providing some quality starts.

Some quality WNBA chat later in the show. No seriously, did you see the brawl at the Palace last night? G&A have seen the Rick Mahorn shoving controversy several times and both agree it doesn’t look good for the former Pistons’ bad boy. Actually, Gambo thinks Mahorn is done in the WNBA, especially since he used obvious force in knocking down Lisa Leslie and didn’t react too remorsefully when she hit the ground…hard.

In the 5 o’ clock hour, G&A were joined by the newest Arizona Diamondback. No, not Jamie D’Antona. Jon Rauch joined the guys to talk about his new role as 8th inning stopper for the D-backs. Not surprisingly, Rauch is excited to be in Arizona, and had nothing but nice things to say about his former organization in Washington. No, really…

D-Backs add to the pen

Here’s what happened Tuesday on Gambo & Ash:

* Yesterday G&A talked at length about the D-Backs prolonged struggles in the bullpen this season, particularly from the 7th and 8th inning guys, Chad Qualls and Tony Pena. Well, apparently D-Backs GM Josh Byrnes felt the same, as today Arizona acquired Nationals closer Jon Rauch in exchange for Emilio Bonifacio. G&A like the trade; Ash isn’t sure Bonifacio will be anything more than another Tony Womack (I agree) and Gambo is sure that Pena and Qualls aren’t trustworthy enough for a team with World Series aspirations.

* D-Backs GM Josh Byrnes joined the guys immediately following the trade announcement. He expects Rauch to pay immediate dividends, as in tonight against the Cubs. Looking toward the future, Byrnes likes the next couple of years of Rauch’s contract, especially since the D-Backs will have a couple of free-agents at season’s end, Brandon Lyon and Juan Cruz. Lyon, however, will remain the closer and Byrnes expects Rauch to fill the role that Brandon filled so well last year - the 8th inning set-up job.

* Count ESPN’s Tim Kurkjian as one who likes the Rauch trade. He especially likes it because it keeps the Dodgers from adding another piece to their depleted bullpen. The trade may also keep the D-Backs from adding another bat to their lineup. Kurkjian has heard the Mariners would not discuss a potential trade for Raul Ibanez, without Bonifacio involved.

* The D-Backs weren’t the only ones making moves. Yesterday, the Suns added free-agent forward Matt Barnes and today Barnes joined G&A live from the Fishtank. Barnes talked about his bizarre trek to the NBA, as well as his relatively unknown football background. Barnes agreed with Ash’s assessment as someone with a background of tough, tenacious play. Although Barnes played a variety of roles in Golden State, he said GM Steve Kerr and Terry Porter expect him to play the three in Phoenix.

* Last but not least, former D-Backs skipper Bob Brenly joined the guys to reminisce about the 2001 World Series. OK, only Ash and Brenly wanted to reminisce, while Gambo just wanted to know if they stole any signs from Andy Pettitte. Didn’t Matt Williams go deep off Pettitte in Game 2? Brenly also relayed a recent conversation between him and Mark Grace, which pointed out some of the unsung heroes of the 2001 season; reliever Troy Brohawn, spot starter Robert Ellis, and the guy who stole signs from Andy Pettitte among others.

Tomorrow: D-Backs skipper Bob Melvin and Gambo fights former UFC light heavyweight champ Tito Ortiz live in studio.

Should the D-Backs give up a key prospect to shore up the bullpen?

Here’s what went down Monday on G&A…

* Tough weekend for the D-Backs, and an especially tough weekend for the bullpen. Gambo is baffled by the bullpen’s 7-plus troubles, but not so much about the 9th inning guy, Brandon Lyon. Ash, on the other hand, wouldn’t mind some closer insurance, and both believe getting Jon Rauch wouldn’t be a bad idea, even if it meant parting with Emilio Bonifacio.

* A big part of the Suns’ problems over the last few seasons has been depth. Now, Phoenix may have a log-jam on the bench, particularly at the 3 and 4 spots after the recent signing of free-agent Matt Barnes. G&A love the signing, particularly Ash, who feels Barnes will bring a pesky toughness to a team that may lack some of the latter. The team still lacks a true backup point guard, and Gambo isn’t ready to rule out Gordon Dragic making the trip overseas to play for the Suns this season. G&A believe the sooner the better when it comes to getting Dragic on the active roster. After all, Steve Nash isn’t getting any younger, and could provide some valuable assistance to a young protégé.

* At 53 years of age Greg Norman isn’t exactly young (sorry Henry Lopez). He was however one round away from an amazing British Open victory. Unfortunately, Padraig Harringon’s lucky charms were too much to overcome for a 2nd straight year, but G&A agree that the story that will be remembered in the end will be that of Norman and his amazing comeback, ala a 39 year-old Jimmy Connors at the U. S. Open in 1989.

And last, but certainly not least - former major leaguer Jim Abbott joined the guys to talk about his amazing big league career and memories of Yankee Stadium.

Tomorrow: ESPN’s Tim Kurkjian and former D-Backs skipper and current Cubs analyst Bob Brenly.

Veteran presence back in the D-Backs’ clubhouse

Here’s what went down Thursday on G&A…

Welcome Back Tony! The Diamondbacks completed a trade that brought Tony Clark back to Phoenix. How much will Clark help? The guys like the deal for his clutch bat and steady, late-inning glove. Gambo confirmed that Conor Jackson will play left field for the remainder of the season while Clark and Chad Tracy will platoon at first. The guys debated if this is the end of the trading or just the beginning? One player the D-Backs like is Nats’ closer Jon Rauch, but G&A know a player with his talent and low salary won’t come cheap. Gambo feels T.C.’s selfless leadership is just what this team needs. Ash doesn’t want to see the D-Backs mortgage their future before the trade deadline.

Dying Young. Young athletes around the country are dying every three days from heart disease. Doctors are having a hard time pin-pointing where these problems are coming from, but many feel it could stem from steroids and methamphetamines. Gambo wonders how these peak-condition athletes are dying from heart conditions. Ash knows athletes are always trying to get “that edge” either legally or illegally and that’s part of the problem.

G&A caught up with Dr. Paul Steingard. The former Suns’ specialist and local osteopathic doctor founded “TOPS” (Team of Physicians for Students). He shared his thoughts on the alarming increase in young athletes’ deaths around the country and how he and a team of doctors are trying help cut down on these staggering numbers.

Shark Bait? 52-year old Greg Norman is just one shot off the British Open lead after today’s opening round. Ash is amazed that Norman is anywhere near the top of the leaderboard. Gambo thinks the TV numbers will suffer greatly without Tiger-even if Norman or possibly Sergio Garcia is close to the top at the end of the weekend. Ash thinks the Open might be saved if Rocco Mediate, Garcia, and Norman have a chance on the final day.

Tomorrow we’ll be joined by D-Backs’ skipper Bob Melvin

An All-Star Game for the ages

Here’s what went down Wednesday on G&A…

Changes Needed The guys broke down last night’s marathon mid-summer classic at Yankee Stadium. Gambo doesn’t feel players should go to the All-Star game if they are not expected to pitch (Brandon Webb). Ash thinks it’s a double-edged sword either way. Both agree things need to change before there is another possible player-shortage due to extended extra innings. Gambo thinks All-Stars should be able to re-enter the game. Terry Francona was prepared to have J.D. Drew pitch if the game would have continued.

Papelbum! The Yankee fans were all over Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon before and during last night’s All-Star Game in New York. New Yorkers were upset that he earlier announced that he wanted to close the game instead of decorated fireman Mariano Rivera. Ash feels he should have deferred to Rivera or taken the high road a different way. Gambo thinks Papelbon made a big mistake. Both agree this only adds the hated Yanks-Sox rivalry. Did Paps get what he deserved? We took calls-most of which were split.

Off to Italy! Former UA prize hoop recruit Brandon Jennings has signed a 3-year deal with Virtrus Roma of the Italian league. G&A discussed why the possible future 1st-round pick would sign a 3-year deal overseas. Gambo thinks Lute Olson will have to recruit one-and-done players to compete at an elite level like he and Arizona is accustomed to. Ash believes Jennings could pave the way for other prep stars going overseas instead of college if he becomes a high NBA pick in the coming years.

Star(bury) Search? The Knicks are expected to release point guard Stephon Marbury. The guys discussed if the Starbury would be a good fit here backing up Steve Nash now that Tyronne Lue is off the market after signing with the Bucks. Gambo knows Marbury would have to adjust to being a role player, but knows the Suns need to address this dire need and LB, nor DJ Strawberry, is not the answer. Ash loves the idea of bringing Steph’s instant offense off the Phoenix bench and won’t lose sleep over the Suns missing out on Lue. Gambo confirmed the Suns have interest in free-agent Jason Williams.

Baseball’s All-Star game

Here’s what went down Tuesday on G&A

Bitter Gambo It’s that time again! The June Employee of the Month was announced and it wasn’t John Gambadoro. Congrats to team player and all-around good guy technical director Pablo Rios. Gambo called for Vice President/Market Manager Scott Sutherland to be fired immediately. Gambo decided to run the board for one of the breaks and, ummm, there’s a reason he didn’t win.

Complete 180 Rangers’ slugger Josh Hamilton didn’t win the homerun derby, but wowed the fans at Yankee Stadium (28 bombs in the opening round) and won over millions of baseball fans around the country. G&A agree this is a wonderful, feel-good story. Hamilton burned through nearly all of his $4 million signing bonus. The guys debated if it’s too late for the 27-year old to go down as one of the greatest players ever. They both agree there is plenty of temptation ahead for Hamilton. We took calls.

Changing of the Guard? Tonight’s All-Star game features a new breed of stars like Hamilton, David Wright, Ryan Braun, Dan Uggla, Evan Longoria, Hanley Ramirez, and others. Only one current all-star (Miguel Tejada) was named on The Mitchell Report. There’s no Manny Ramirez, Pudge Rodriguez, Tom Glavine, or Curt Schilling. Gambo thinks a large group of these young All-Stars are destined for greatness. Ash thinks the fans want to see this new crop of phenoms as the game further evolves. Gambo wants to believe that we are entering a “clean era” in baseball.

Our ESPN baseball insider Tim Kurkjian checked in live from Yankee Stadium to preview tonight’s historic All-Star Game and re-cap the first half of the season. He also shared his thoughts on the amazing achievements of Josh Hamilton.

Still Shopping The Suns are still hoping Tyronne Lue decides to sign here, but Gambo is reporting the club is also looking at free-agents Shaun Livingston, Jason Williams, and Keyon Dooling. Ash likes J-Will and Livingston more than Lue. Gambo thinks Lue might sign with the Celtics if they up the ante and outbid the Suns. Would Phoenix consider bringing in Stephon Marbury if he is released by the Knicks? G&A agree the Suns should at least take a look to back-up Steve Nash.

Part II Gambo is irritated that Fox is stretching their exclusive interview with Brett Favre into two parts. G&A agree the Packers are in total control of this situation and are taking care of their franchise before their franchise quarterback. Both agree this saga is far from complete.

Absolutely inexcusable

Here’s what went down Monday on G&A

* Weekend Culturing- G&A discussed their big weekends. Ash saw jam-band Rusted Root while Gambo somehow got out of taking his daughters to the Jonas Brothers concert Friday night. Gambo concluded that Rusted Root sounds an awful lot like Crowded House. Gambo ripped Ash for his musical tastes, Mark, obviously, returned the favor.

* Inexcusable- Gambo is convinced the Diamondbacks are the dumbest team in baseball following their comedy of mental errors on the latest east coast road trip. G&A are getting sick of Chad Qualls squandering late-inning situations and know the trade with Houston (along with light-hitting Chris Burke) for Jose Valverde has been disastrous. Gambo continues to defend Bob Melvin and blames the players for lack of effort and simple execution. Ash doesn’t want to see Qualls in any late-game situation for the next couple weeks.

* Still Waiting- The Suns continue to wait on free-agent Tyronn Lue who is deciding between a handful of teams including the Heat. G&A agree Steve Kerr can’t be as patient as he was with Brent Barry.

* We were joined by former New York Yankee player and World Series champion manager Ralph Houk who shared his thoughts on the final All-Star Game tomorrow night at the present Yankee Stadium and being around some of the greatest players in baseball history like Roger Maris and his fondest memories of the Stadium.

* More Dirty Laundry- Tim Donaghy is back in the news. The former NBA ref allegedly made over 100 calls to fellow official Scott Foster. David Stern has insisted all along that Donaghy has acted alone. Gambo wants to see how David Stern slips out of this one. Ash feels if all this is true, it’s time for David Stern to step down as commissioner of the National Basketball Association. G&A are going to take a wait-and-see approach until all the facts are released.

* Tough Stand- Brett Favre wants out of his contract with the Packers, but Green Bay is not willing to release the future HOF’er. They are willing to bring him back as a backup to incumbent Aaron Rodgers. It’s getting stickier and sticker by the day. G&A agree Ted Thompson doesn’t want Favre on another NFC North team-specifically the Vikings.

Intern Sean ate nine Jack in the Box tacos within 20 minutes during the first half of the show.

Tomorrow: We’ll preview the All-Star Game and be joined by ESPN baseball insider Tim Kurkjian.
