Jet-Streamed

Here’s what went down Monday on G&A

Jet-Streamed - The Jets blew out the Red Birds 56-35 yesterday at The Meadowlands.  G&A agree there’s plenty of blame to go around starting with Kurt Warner and the Cards’ o-line who failed to protect him throughout the course of the game.  Both are frustrated by the poor pass protection footwork and technique Levi Brown used yesterday against former Card Calvin Pace.  Gambo puts plenty of blame on the secondary which was consistently beaten by Brett Favre and the Jets’ receivers.  Ash still thinks the Red Birds will take care of the Bills this weekend in Glendale.  The guys agree there is plenty of parity in the NFL right now.

We caught up with Sports 620 KTAR reporter Johnny V. LIVE at Cards’ headquarters in Glendale.  V. said most of the Cards’ players were okay with the hit on Anquan Boldin at the end of the game yesterday in New York and the secondary is still shell-shocked after getting torched by the Jets’ skill players.  Eric Smith of the Jets was fined $50,000 and suspended one game for the hit on Q.

Season Over - The D-backs’ season officially came to a close yesterday with a win over the Rockies.  Bob Melvin’s crew finished 82-80 as Randy Johnson picked up win #295 on the final day of the season.  G&A debated if the club will bring Randy back and what tweaks the front office needs to make this off-season.  Gambo believes Johnson can still pitch.  The guys were upset that Unit didn’t make an appearance on the field with the rest of the team to give away his jersey - a tradition with the Diamondbacks.

Tomorrow:  We’ll be joined by ESPN baseball insider Tim Kurkjian, college football analyst Mark May, and Cards’ quarterback Kurt Warner.

Jet-setters?

Here’s what went down Friday on G&A

Johnny V. filled in for the vacationing Ash.

No Victory for USC - Oregon State shocked the college football world by knocking off top-ranked USC last night in Corvallis.  Gambo & Johnny V. broke down what happened to Pete Carroll’s team.  Gambo thinks the Trojans overlook inferior teams every year (Stanford last year, the Beavers last night).  Johnny V. still feels USC is not only the most talented team in the Pac-10, but one of the best in the country.  The guys agree this is certainly a big missed opportunity for the Trojans but another big upset for Mike Riley and the Beavers and you never know what to expect from these crazy Thursday night games.

1997 Butkus Award winner and one of the best linebackers in Ohio State history Andy Katzenmoyer discussed his rise to fame with the Buckeyes in Columbus and his eventual fall from glory after his NFL career was cut short due to injury in 2002.  He also expressed his frustration with the Sports Illustrated article which slammed his class schedule at Ohio State University.  Katzenmoyer has since opened L.I.F.T fitness in Westerville, Ohio with his wife.

Jet-setters?
- The Cards are preparing for Brett Favre and the Jets on Sunday.  Johnny V. feels, with the tough schedule ahead, this is a must-win game.  Gambo doesn’t feel this isn’t a must-win game, but the Red Birds need to learn to win on the road and there’s no better time than this weekend.

World renowned sports handicapper Brandon Lang joined the show to take calls and shared his thoughts and insight on this weekend’s big football matchups around the country.  Lang liked TCU, Virginia Tech, and Purdue to cover the number this weekend.

Our ESPN NFL analyst Mark Schlereth checked in for his weekly segment to break down the Cards’ disappointing loss last weekend D.C. and convey what he thinks might happen Sunday against the Brett Favre and the Jets.  He also explained how the Dolphins were able to run all over the Patriots last week at Foxboro.

Ash returns on Monday.

We’ll be broadcasting live from Coach & Willie’s in downtown Phoenix.

D-backs Done

Here’s what went down Thursday on G&A…

Short show following day baseball in St. Louis.

D-backs’ Done
- With this afternoon’s loss, the Diamondbacks were officially eliminated from the playoffs.  The guys know we will see a very different team in 2009.  Gambo feels Eric Byrnes will be the fourth outfielder with Conor Jackson becoming the permanent starting left fielder and Doug Davis will be traded with just one-year left on his deal.  Both feel several of Josh Byrnes’ moves didn’t pan out, but Bob Melvin deserves credit for keeping this team afloat until the final weekend of the year.

The guys caught up with the great Brooks Robinson.  Robinson was a 16-time Gold Glove winner, 15-time All-Star, 1964 AL MVP, 1970 World Series MVP, and 1983 National Baseball Hall of Famer.  He discussed his illustrious 23-year career-all with the Baltimore Orioles.  The third baseman is widely considered the best defensive player at any position in the history of baseball.

Tomorrow:  Ash is off, Johnny V. co-hosting with Gambo

We’ll be joined by former Ohio State star linebacker Andy Katzenmoyer, ESPN NFL analyst Mark Schlereth, and sports handicapper Brandon Lang.

Blame Game

Here’s what went down Wednesday on G&A

Blame Game - The Diamondbacks fell behind early and never recovered dropping a key game last night in St. Louis.  Randy Johnson was roughed up in the opening inning and Jon Rauch’s struggles continued.  Gambo is fed-up with Rauch (although he admits he was initially in favor of the deal) and wonders if he is any benefit to this staff.  Ash thinks Josh Byrnes should take some responsibility for the D-backs’ downfall because most of the deals he made (Rauch, Carlos Quentin, Jose Valverde) haven’t panned out.  G&A agree BoMel is a solid manager, but question some of his decisions - particularly with the shaky bullpen.  The guys debated what the Snakes might do with free-agent-to-be Randy Johnson at the conclusion of the season.

Arizona State athletic director Lisa Love shared her thoughts on the Devils’ 27-10 loss to 2nd-ranked Georgia at Sun Devil Stadium on Saturday.  Love also previewed The Stadium Shootout in Glendale December 20th featuring ASU-BYU and Minnesota-Louisville.  Tickets go on sale this weekend.

The guys caught up with D-backs’ skipper Bob Melvin.  BoMel isn’t quite sure what to make of Rauch’s struggles, nor what his role will be on this club moving forward.  He also said he expects big things from tonight’s starter, Max Scherzer.

Staying Home
- The Yankees’ post-season streak is oh-vuh (as Gambo would say).  For the first time since 1993, New York will not be playing October baseball.  Gambo thinks it’s ok this year, but wouldn’t want to see the Yanks left out of the post-season on a consistent basis.  Ash is just happy to not have to watch George Steinbrenner’s team this fall.  G&A debated if it’s good or bad for baseball not having the Yanks in the hunt for the title.

Tomorrow:  short show after day baseball in St. Louis

We’ll be joined by Baseball HOF’er Brooks Robinson.

Keep Grinding

Here’s what went down Tuesday on G&A

Short show before Diamondbacks’ baseball in the Gateway to the West.

Keep Grinding - The D-backs got a big win last night in St. Louis to shrink LA’s lead in the NL West to two games.  The Snakes avoided another late-inning bullpen collapse and will lean on Randy Johnson tonight against the Red Birds.  G&A love the fact that BoMel’s team isn’t rolling over and playing dead for the Dodgers.  Both agree the D-backs are still a long shot to overcome Joe Torre’s club in the West.

The guys caught up with Brandon Webb.  D-backs’ ace picked up his 22nd win last night in St. Louis as the D-backs kept their playoff hopes alive with a clutch 4-2 win over the Cards.  Webby threw a season-high 121 pitches - scattering 8 hits and 2 runs in 7 innings and got a huge strikeout of Albert Pujols to end the 7th.  Gambo ripped him for his slow baserunning and Webb responded by challenging him to a race.  Stay tuned.

Favre Factor - Brett Favre and the Jets were blown out by the Chargers last night in San Diego.  The future HOF’er threw three picks in the loss.  The Jets are now 1-2 and preparing to take on the Red Birds this weekend.  The guys debated if #4 made the right decision coming back or if he should have just stayed retired.  Gambo wonders what happened to the quality of quarterback play in the NFL.

We were joined by our ESPN baseball insider Tim Kurkjian.  He said the D-backs are still very much alive in the NL West and wonders if ANY “expert” picked the Rays to make the post-season, much less win the deep and talented American League East.

ESPN college football analyst Mark May shared his thoughts on last weekend’s games including Georgia man-handling ASU and Boise State’s upset of Oregon in Eugene.  MayDay doesn’t think Alabama will upset UGA this weekend, but watch out for Nick Saban’s team in the future.

Tomorrow:  We’ll be joined by D-backs skipper Bob Melvin and ASU AD Lisa Love.

Devils Doomed

Here’s what went down Monday on Gambo & Ash…

Short show before Diamondbacks’ baseball in St. Louis.

Devils’ Doomed - Georgia pounded ASU Saturday night at Sun Devil Stadium.  Gambo thinks Dennis Erickson should have listened to his advice last week and just not even tried to run the ball on the Dawgs’ strength and speed defensively.  Ash feels the Devils just aren’t ready for primetime and may be hurt by the “big city” factor that Columbus, Eugene, and Ann Arbor have being the only show in town.  Both agree next week’s game at Cal will make or break the season.

Right Move? - Cards’ coach Ken Whisenhunt opted to punt the ball away on 4th and four with two timeouts late in the 4th quarter.  The ‘Skins never gave the ball back and went on to a 24-17 win.  Gambo thinks Whiz should have rolled the dice since the down and distance was reasonable and the game was hanging in the balance.  Ash thinks this puts even more pressure on the Red Birds to pick up a win against the Jets this weekend in New York.  Gambo would like to see any of the Cards’ “other” wide receivers step and make plays to take the pressure off Fitzgerald and Boldin.  G&A agree the Cards didn’t get any breaks against Washington.

Cardinals’ color analyst and co-host of Doug & Wolf Ron Wolfley checked in LIVE from D.C. to breakdown the Red Birds’ disappointing 24-17 loss to the Redskins yesterday at FedEx Field.  Wolf thought Whiz made the right move to punt the ball away late in the 4th quarter.

Snakes Alive! - The Diamondbacks are only 2.5 games behind the Dodgers heading into tonight’s game in St. Louis.  One week of regular season baseball to play.  The Dodgers are idle so a win tonight could shrink the margin to two.  G&A debated if the D-backs can stay hot and, maybe more importantly, the lowly Padres can help out by beating LA.  Both agree tonight is a must-win - especially with Brandon Webb on the bump.

Tomorrow we’ll be joined by ESPN baseball insider Tim Kurkjian and college football analyst Mark May.

Big Game

Here’s what went down Friday on G&A.

Short show today before Diamondbacks baseball in Denver.

Big Game - Dawgs-Devils tomorrow night at Sun Devil Stadium.  Gambo knows the Devils will not be able to run the ball on UGA and must rely on quick, short passes to move the ball against a stingy Bulldog defense.  He also thinks not having senior Keegan Herring won’t make much of a difference, but ASU needs to protect Rudy Carpenter.  Gambo says there are no moral victories for Dennis Erickson’s team…leave that to UofA.  It’s put up or shut up for ASU.

Former Yankee 2-time World Series Champion and 1971 AL Rookie of the Year Chris Chambliss joined us to discuss his career in pinstripes and the final weekend of play at the old Yankee Stadium.  The Yankees are releasing a 6-DVD box set on Tuesday called Essential Games of Yankee Stadium.

Our ESPN NFL analyst Mark Schlereth checked in to discuss the Cards 2-0 start and what might happen this weekend in D.C. against the Redskins.  He broke down the impressive play of Aaron Rodgers and the controversy in Denver last weekend surrounding respected NFL referee and Valley resident, Ed Hochuli.

World renowned sports handicapper Brandon Lang joined Gambo for his weekly segment to share his thoughts on this weekend’s big matchups in both college and the NFL.  Lang likes the Pats big this weekend against Miami and Carolina over the Vikings in Minnesota.

PICK THE PROS:

Ash- Cincinnati (+13.5), Arizona (+3), New England (-12)

Gambo-  Carolina (+3.5), Tennessee (-5), Atlanta (-5.5)

E- Atlanta (-5.5), Buffalo (-9.5), Tennesee (-5)

Ash returns Monday!

The 2-Minute Drill: Second Chance

Here’s what went down Thursday on Gambo & Ash

Ash was off.  Gambo flew solo.

Gambo reflected back on him and Ash being honored guests of the Chase Field grounds crew last night.  Gambo was happy he was able to take home third base…literally.  Why do they have to change out the bases twice a game, again?

An Era to Remember - Steve Garvey said the game of baseball was best in the 70’s.  Garvey played with the same infield for nine years - something you’ll never see in today’s game.  Gambo said he really fell in love with the sport during that era-before free-agency, steroids, and too many teams.  He thinks the game has changed and certainly not for the better.  Too many spoiled, ungrateful, selfish athletes (see Josh Howard).

Former Cardinal offensive lineman, now the starting left guard for the Washington Redskins Pete Kendall previewed their game against the undefeated Red Birds Sunday at FedEx Field.  He expects a tough, competitive game this weekend against the revitalized Cards.

Devastated - Respected referee and Valley of the Sun resident Ed Hochuli has publicly apologized to Chargers fans for his lapse in judgment in the Chargers loss to the Broncos Sunday in Denver.  Gambo knows Hochuli made a mistake and he’s fine with that.  He does feel he should have taken the time and admitted his mistake before Denver ran another play.  He’s hoping that blown call doesn’t cost the ‘Bolts a shot at the playoffs.  We took calls.

Former Green Bay Packer NFL MVP, Super Bowl champion and Notre Dame Heisman Trophy winner Paul Hornung reflected back on his career and how he sees the NFL in the modern era.  Hornung is amazed at the poor quarterback play in the NFL today.  He shared stories about how Bart Starr used to call every play at the line of scrimmage.

Gambo caught up with Justin Upton.  The Diamondbacks’ right fielder launched a towering 438-foot 2-run homer in last night’s 7-6 win over the Giants at Chase Field.  J-Up is 9-21 in last 5 games entering tonight’s contest against San Fran.

Sports 620 KTAR Program Director “The Big Bald Eagle” Ryan Hatch joined Gambo to preview “The 2-Minute Drill:  Second Chance” where we will raffle off an NFL destination trip to any Sunday game the winner wants tomorrow at 2:00PM on “Gambo & Ash.”

Tomorrow:  Ash continues his vacation…all Gambo, all the time!

Guests:  ESPN NFL analyst Mark Schlereth, former Yankee World Series champion Chris Chambliss, and sports handicapper Brandon Lang.

Closer to a Closer?

Here’s what went down Wednesday on G&A

Disrespectful - Mavs’ forward Josh Howard is in the news again for all the wrong reasons.  The talented player who last season admitted he liked to smoke weed, even in-season, was caught on a cell phone camera disrespecting The National Anthem at a charity flag football game.  G&A are outraged at Howard’s antics and know it’s inexcusable, but feel he’s certainly not the only athlete who needs to show more respect during The Anthem.  The guys are even more ticked at Mark Cuban who almost defended Howard’s remarks.  We took calls.

Arizona State Director of Athletics Lisa Love checked in for her weekly segment to discuss Saturday’s disappointing loss to UNLV and what she expects to see from Dennis Erickson’s team this weekend against 3rd-ranked Georgia.  Her advice to Sun Devil fans-get to the stadium early!

Diamondbacks skipper Bob Melvin joined the show to discuss the D-backs mini two-game win streak and the approach he’s taking the final two weeks of baseball.

Closer to a Closer? - Angels’ owner Artie Moreno confirmed that he will not expand the club’s payroll in 2009.  Reading between the lines, record-setting closer Francisco Rodriguez will not be back with the club next season.  Gambo thinks it’s time the D-backs step up and make a play for the best closer in baseball.  Is he worth $15 million a year?

Georgia head football coach Mark Richt joined the show to share his thoughts on the Bulldogs visit to Sun Devil Stadium Saturday.  This marks the first west coast trip for UGA since 1960.  He has been impressed with the Rudy Carpenter and the Devils’ talented skill players.  Richt is 75-19 in his 7-plus years in Athens.

Tomorrow:  Ash is off, Gambo flies solo.  He’ll be joined by Redskins’ guard, and former Cardinal, Pete Kendall, former Dodger great Steve Garvey, and former Heisman winner and NFL MVP Paul Hornung.

Same ‘Ole UofA

Here’s what went down today on G&A…

Same ‘Ole UofA…what started out as a promising open to the 2008 football season took a turn for the worse Saturday against New Mexico.  The Lobos beat the ‘Cats for the second-straight year and with the schedule only getting tougher, G&A debated if this signals the end of Mike Stoops-who is 19-30 at UofA.  Gambo feels the New Mexico loss (Lobos rushed for 221 yards) will keep them out of a bowl…again.  Ash is taking a wait-and-see approach after seeing how this weekend’s game with equally inconsistent UCLA plays out.  He thinks the ‘Cats still have a shot at a lower-tier bowl-since the Pac-10 has seven of them.

Unbeatable?…Gambo is convinced that USC will run the table and win the BCS Championship in January.  He thinks the Trojans are just too fast and too talented not to.  Mark Sanchez reminds him of former Raider great and Stanford alum, Jim Plunkett.  Ash, after going over USC’s schedule, concurs but feels a talented skill team could give them trouble in the title game.

Our ESPN baseball insider Tim Kurkjian checked in for his weekly segment to discuss the sinking Diamondbacks, Carlos Zambrano’s no-hitter against the Astros in Milwaukee Sunday night, yesterday’s unexpected firing of Brewer manager Ned Yost, the new single-season saves leader K-Rod, and everything else making headlines around Major League Baseball.

Viva La Manny!…no player acquired near the trade deadline has made more of an impact than Dodgers’ slugger Manny Ramirez.  Man-Ram has better production (post-trade deadline) than any other player in over 50 years.  G&A agree this deal worked out great for the Dodgers and Red Sox-but not for the lowly Pirates who got little in return for talented Jason Bay.  The guys discussed if Man-Ram is MVP-worthy…even though he played for the Dodgers for only two months.  Gambo thinks he’s deserving of the NL MVP.

ESPN college football analyst Mark May shared his thoughts on ASU’s stunning loss to UNLV and what he expects to see Saturday against Georgia.  MayDay will also breakdown USC’s beat-down of Ohio State at The Coliseum and what turned out to be an otherwise terrible weekend for the Pac-10.

We were joined by NFL super-agent Drew Rosenhaus, who represents over 100 NFL players including Plaxico Burress, Chad Ocho Cinco, Terrell Owens, Kellen Winslow JR, and Anquan Boldin, who has a new book out called, Next Question.  He discussed his new novel and share his thoughts on the future of Boldin with the Cardinals moving forward.  Rosenhaus said Boldin will not be a Cardinal next season.

Tomorrow:  Georgia head coach Mark Richt, Dbacks’ skipper Bob Melvin, and ASU Director of Athletics Lisa Love
