Pick The Pros - Week 11

In Pick The Pros we had a demotion after last week. Gamb0 & Ash both went 3-0 and fill-in producer Farmer Rod went 1-2. Ash took a strong week and sits in second place by himself while Gambo continues to claim he is the best picker in the country and is comfortably in first place. Brandon Lang had a few to stay away from while also feeling pretty good about a few, including a couple our guys took in this weeks Pick The Pros. The Week 11 picks…

ASH - NY Giants (-7), Atlanta (-6.5), Jacksonville (+3)

GAMBO - NY Giants (-7), Arizona (-3), Indianapolis (-8)

E - Pittsburgh (-5), Buffalo (-5), Carolina (-14)

Goodbye Randy?

Here’s what went down Thursday on G&A

Preaching Patience - The Suns got drilled by the Rockets last night at U.S. Airways Center in a game filled with almost everything-including a brawl. Ash was happy to see the Suns take a stand for Steve Nash as the fight unfolded, and loves the toughness Matt Barnes brings to the floor. Gambo is willing to give this team time under Terry Porter and his new system. The guys agree Leandro Barbosa is struggling-especially with his ailing mother back in Brazil.

Saying Goodbye? - Randy Johnson filed for free agency today, meaning his renewed career in Arizona could be over. Ash thinks Johnson and his agents are putting the onus on the D-backs for not getting a deal done with the Snakes, and feels there’s really no way he will return on ’09. Gambo knows Unit can still pitch, but believes unless he can take a hometown discount he should pitch elsewhere. Gambo reported negotiations are continuing between the two parties. Doesn’t Johnson owe it to the fans here to take a “cheaper” deal? We took calls.

Oregon head football coach Mike Bellotti discussed the Ducks showdown with UofA Saturday in Eugene. Bellotti broke down the Cats’ high-powered offense and what he expects to see from Mike Stoops’ defense. The Ducks come in 7-3 (5-2 in the Pac-10) while the Wildcats sit at 4-2 in the Pac and 6-3 overall.

Our ESPN NBA analyst Tim Legler shared his thoughts on last night’s Rockets-Suns scuffle-marred game at U.S. Airways Center, the Celtics last-second win over previously unbeaten Atlanta last night in Boston, the red-hot Lakers, and everything else making headlines around the league.

Eye on NY? - Mike D’Antoni quietly has the Knicks off to a 5-3 start and has caught national attention for his hard-lined stance on Eddy Curry and Stephon Marbury. He has New York playing his style (132 points in the win Wednesday night over Memphis). G&A are happy the well-liked D’Antoni is doing well, but wonder how long he can keep winning without top-notch talent like he had here. We took calls-most of which were happy the Coach Mike is experiencing early-season success.

Friday we’ll be joined by ESPN NFL analyst Mark Schlereth and sports handicapper Brandon Lang.

Trevor Time?

Here’s what went down Wednesday on G&A

Trevor Time? - Trevor Hoffman wants to come back to the Padres but the feelings not totally mutual. Hoffman’s agent says that a handful of teams are in the running for the all-time saves leader-one of those is the Diamondbacks. Gambo thinks he would be a great fit here, even if just for a year or two. He feels the revolving door at closer never made much sense since Brandon Lyon never got the job done in place of the departed Jose Valverde. Ash likes the idea simply because T-Hoff is better than any of the incumbents (Tony Pena, Chad Qualls, Jon Rauch, etc.). Would the former UA Wildcat make sense here? We took calls.

Arizona State Director of Athletics Lisa Love checked in LIVE from Washington D.C. where the National Champion Sun Devil softball and track and field were being honored by President Bush today at The White House. She also previewed Saturday’s homecoming game against Washington State and the tip-off of Herb Sendek’s nationally-ranked Sun Devil hoops’ season on Friday.

ESPN and ESPN.com BCS guru Brad Edwards discussed the chances of three Big 12 teams possibly getting bids and how the breakdowns might play out over the final month of what has been a very unpredictable college football season. There is also a chance a team like Ohio State could get in over a one-loss Big 12 school because of the top-heavy and talented Big 12. Edwards thinks BYU still has a good chance of making a BCS game if they run the table, beating Utah the final week of the season.

The Mess of the BCS - The college football season is winding down and the BCS is crazy as ever. Would you believe Ohio State and possibly BYU still have a chance of making a BCS game? The guys agree a very good Big 12 team could be left out of the BCS picture, like Missouri was last year. G&A know nobody wants to see a Ball State-Ohio State BCS game. They debated if the BCS will work itself out in the end as, like it or not, it usually does.

My Bad - 49er offensive coordinator Mike Martz is blaming everyone but himself for the botched play-calling towards the conclusion of San Fran’s MNF loss to the Cards. He blamed the officials for “mis-spotting” the ball in the closing moments. Martz said he already had a play called from the one-yard line, not the three where the ball was spotted. G&A place total blame on Martz and the coaches for not taking control of the situation. Ash thinks he has been living off his “Greatest Show on Turf” days and the game has clearly passed him by. We took calls.

Gambo & Ash caught up with 1967 Cy Young Award winner Mike McCormick who was the only Giant in the franchise’s storied history to win the award before Tim Lincecum took home the honor yesterday. McCormick, a 2-time All-Star himself, said Lincecum were deserving, but felt all the other finalists (Brandon Webb, C.C. Sabathia, Johan Santana) each had outstanding seasons. He is also in the history books for giving up Hank Aaron’s 500th homerun.

Thursday we’ll be joined by ESPN NBA analyst Tim Legler and Oregon head coach Mike Bellotti.

Close Cards

Here’s what went down Tuesday on G&A

Close Cards - The Red Birds improved to 6-3 with a dramatic 29-24 win over the 49ers in Glendale.  G&A agree the Cards certainly didn’t play their best, but getting the victory really says a lot about how far this team has come.  Ash thinks San Fran offensive coordinator Mike Martz blew the game with his final play call.  Gambo was impressed with 49er quarterback Shawn Hill, but applauds the Red Birds for making plays when they had to.  The guys were perplexed by some of the officiating last night-for both teams.  Gambo thinks Steve Breaston’s improvement has been key to the club’s 2008 success.  We took calls.

Cardinals’ defensive captain and starting linebacker Karlos Dansby checked in to discuss the Red Birds’ comeback win over the 49ers last night in Glendale.  Dansby had a key 4th-quarter interception to go along with a team-high 10 tackles.  The free-agent-to-be is optimistic he will re-sign with Arizona this off-season.

Decisions, Decisions - Dansby told Gambo & Ash that he feels he will be able to agree to terms and remain a long-term Cardinal this off-season.  G&A know the organization won’t be able to afford both he and Anquan Boldin - who is expecting a bigger deal or trade once the season ends.  Gambo thinks Breaston’s development could make trading “Q” a little easier.  Ash feels Dansby is quickly becoming a top-tier NFL linebacker.  Gambo hopes the Cards will attempt to keep their “core” together.  We took calls.

Former 4-time Pro-Bowl linebacker with the Cards and Redskins Ken Harvey discussed his 11-year NFL career, his time here in Arizona, and life after football-which includes his latest concept, “Float Ball” a high-concept called SpaceSportilization.

Our ESPN college football analystMark May broke down last weekend’s big games including Alabama’s big overtime win in Death Valley, Texas Tech’s route of Oklahoma State, and Iowa’s upset of previously unbeaten Penn State.  MayDay also shared his thoughts on the latest BCS rankings and everything else making headlines around college football.

Hold the Mayo! - The Suns survived a scare from Memphis last night as rookie O.J. Mayo went off for 33 points in the loss.  Ash was surprised when the Grizzlies picked him - especially when they already have a talented point guard in Mike Conley, JR.  Ash thinks Mayo fits well at the two-guard, which he played last night.  Gambo likes the way Terry Porter is using his aging roster wisely - like resting Shaq on back-to-backs.  Both agree the Suns will be tough to beat if the bench continues to produce (50 points vs. the Grizzlies).

All About Football

Here’s what went down Monday on G&A

Monday Madness - The Cardinals face the 49ers tonight and the world will be watching as Monday Night Football comes to Glendale. The guys agree the Red Birds are nearly unstoppable at home under Ken Whisenhunt, and tonight is an opportunity to basically put the NFC West on ice. Both agree the Cards should roll the Niners - especially with revenge on their mind after last year’s sweep, which essentially cost them a playoff spot. We took calls.

Monday Night Football analyst and good friend of the program Ron Jaworski shared his thoughts on tonight’s 49ers-Cardinals match-up in Glendale and recapped the weekend that was around the NFL.

Week 10 - The guys broke down the big games around the league, including the Falcons’ win over New Orleans and New England’s big victory over the Bills. Gambo had no problem with Herm Edwards going for two late against San Diego. Ash is convinced Matt Ryan is for real and Atlanta is a player in the NFC.

BCS Mess - Another crazy weekend of college football is in the books and the BCS crystal ball is cloudier than ever. G&A were relieved Iowa upset Penn State so we won’t have to see another Big 10 team get blown away in the National Championship. The guys debated who might get left out if Texas Tech, Texas and Oklahoma all finish the Big 12 season with one loss if OU beats Tech next weekend.

Goin’ Bowling! - For the first time in a decade, the Arizona Wildcats are going to a bowl game. The ‘Cats pounded lowly Washington State to clinch their 6th win and assure a post-season destination to-be-determined. Gambo thinks the Sun or Holiday Bowl would be a major coup for UA. Ash is convinced this Arizona team is one of the better teams in the Pac-10 - at least this season. Both wonder if the Wildcats will keep ASU out of a bowl game this year - quite a change from years’ past. The guys debated if UA fans will make the trek to support their team. We took calls.

Tuesday we’ll be joined by former Cardinal Pro Bowler and Float Ball creator Ken Harvey. ESPN college football analyst Mark May will check in for his weekly segment as well.

Pick The Pros - Week 10

In Pick The Pros the standings were shook up after last week. First off, Gambo had his first losing week. Secondly, Ash actually lost a game on Gambo because he went oh-fer. The worst of his picks being Dallas covering at New York. Farmer Rod filled in for E and did well enough for him to gain a game on Gambo. For this week Brandon Lang agreed with Gambo except on the Sunday night game in Philadelphia. Guess which way Gambo went. And as for the Week 10 picks…

ASH - Tennessee (-3), Jacksonville (-6.5), NY Giants (+3)

GAMBO - Carolina (-9.5), NY Giants (+3), New England (-3.5)

E - Jacksonville (-6.5), San Diego (-15), New Orleans (+1)

Day of guests

Here’s what happened Thursday on Gambo & Ash

Coyotes captain Shane Doan joined Gambo & Ash while on the road. Doan is off to a solid start to the season and the ‘Yotes look to improve on their 5-5 record when they take on the Canucks tonight in Vancouver.

Red Sox pitcher and former Diamondback Curt Schilling discussed his 8th Annual Schilling FORE ALS Golf Tournament and his future heading into the 2009 season-including the chances of returning to the D-backs.  He is currently a free-agent wanting to join a team that has a chance to play in October.

Light middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe previewed his fight Saturday against Roy Jones, JR at Madison Square Garden.  Calzaghe is 45-0 with 32 knockouts.  Jones enters the fight 52-4 with 38 KO’s.

7-time Grand Slam singles champion and largely considered the “Face of Tennis” John McEnroe discussed his illustrious career, the state of the game, and The Cancer Treatment Centers of America Championship that he’s participating in out in Surprise.

Tim Legler our ESPN NBA analyst checked in for his weekly segment to break down Amare Stoudemire’s 49-point, 11-rebound masterpiece last night against the Pacers.  “Legs” also shared his thoughts on Tuesday’s Allen Iverson-Chauncey Billups blockbuster deal, and the undefeated Atlanta Hawks who beat the Hornets in New Orleans last night.

Perfect Game!

Here’s what went down Wednesday on G&A

Short show today before Suns-Pacers’ basketball.

More Drama - The Lute Olson Soap Opera continues down in Tucson.  Lute’s doctor, Stephen Knope, has filed a restraining order against Olson’s former wife Christine after she stormed directly into his private office and placed a target practice sheet with 25 bullet holes to the head and body on the back of his chair.  The guys agree Lute’s ex is crazy.  End of story.

Perfect Game - The Suns opened their 4-game road trip with a nice win over the Nets last night.  Gambo loves the way Terry Porter trusts his bench-even if that means suffering a loss along the way.  Ash enjoyed the fact that Porter rested his starters and the Suns still had 7 players in double figures.  The guys agree Shaq might not play a single minute tonight against the vertically-challenged Pacers (second game of the back-to-back) and that’s fine.  Gambo can see a 4-0 road trip - Ash thinks they’ll go 3-1.

On Second Thought - USC coach Pete Carroll suddenly isn’t a fan of the BCS.  Carroll has said in the past that the system was clearly the best way to decide a National Champion-now he wants a playoff system because the one-loss Trojans can’t gain ground in the BCS standings because of the weak Pac-10 that they play in.  Gambo doesn’t feel Carroll’s argument holds any weight-especially when he thinks schools like Florida and Penn State are flat-out better this season.  Ash is in favor of the proposed plus-one system and can’t see a play-off system solving the problem.  Fiesta Bowl President John Junker called in to share his thoughts and argue with Gambo.  We took calls.

Not So Fast! - UA freshman Jeff Withey wants to transfer to another university after Olson’s sudden retirement last week.  Arizona athletic director Jim Livengood is refusing to release Withey because it would cost ‘Zona a scholarship.  Gambo doesn’t see much happening down in The Old Pueblo with all the de-commits they’ve experienced in the past couple weeks and the general apathy surrounding the hoops’ program.  Ash reported that new coach Russ Pennell is holding one 5:30AM practice a week.  Fun!

Thursday we’ll joined by Curt Schilling, ESPN NBA analyst Tim Legler, and light-heavyweight champion Joe Calzaghe.

Midway point

Here’s what went down Tuesday on G&A

Happy Election Day!

Wolverine Worst - This has been a disastrous year for Michigan football.  The Wolverines (2-7) will not be going to a bowl for the first time in 33 years and lost at home to Toledo a few weeks ago.  Gambo thinks the players have quit on new head coach Rich Rodriquez - nearly all who were recruited by former coach Lloyd Carr.  The current players can’t figure out Rich-Rod’s spread offense.  Ash doesn’t think Carr, who was scrutinized by alums, would not have let this free-fall happen.  The guys debated if Rodriguez will find success playing his style in a “grounded” league like The Big 10.  We took calls.

Midway Point - The NFL season is half over and it’s been a strange season up to this point.  The top teams in the NFC outweigh the best the AFC has to offer.  G&A discussed the long list of running back surprises (Chris Johnson) and disappointments (Laurence Maroney).  Gambo likes the two-back system like the Titans and Giants use.  Ash thinks it’s strange that some of the leagues marquee backs (Adrian Peterson, LaDainian Tomlinson, and Larry Johnson) have been good, but certainly not great.

ESPN baseball insider Tim Kurkjian shared his thoughts on the Phillies finishing off the Rays last week to claim their first World Series Championship since 1980. He thinks Curt Schilling will pitch again next season because his ego won’t allow him to retire now.  Kurkjian also said he expects Padres’ ace Jake Peavy to be dealt this winter and feels Manny Ramirez may eventually re-up with the Dodgers because he is good for LA and LA is good for Man-Ram.

Warm up the Stove - The World Series is over, but there’s still plenty of excitement in Major League Baseball.  G&A discussed the chances of Randy Johnson returning to the Snakes.  Big Unit is six victories short of 300.  Gambo thinks it would be wise to bring Johnson back as the fourth starter.  Ash isn’t in favor of any deal this winter involving Max Scherzer.

Our ESPN college football analyst Mark May checked in for his weekly segment to discuss the wild weekend it was including Texas Tech’s dramatic win over Texas and Florida’s beat down of Georgia.  Plus, he previewed this week’s big games including TCU @ Utah Thursday night, LSU hosting top-ranked Alabama, and Oklahoma State travelling to Lubbock to take on the Red Raiders.

Changing of the guard

Here’s what went down Monday on G&A…

Changing of the Guard - Edgerrin James is out and Tim Hightower is in as starting tailback for the now 5-3 Cardinals following Sunday’s win over the Rams. G&A agree Whiz’s decision to sit Edge is very telling and doesn’t want to hear Edge’s reasoning why he isn’t playing (chastised coaching staff). Same for Matt Leinart, who didn’t take a single snap, even late in the 4th-quarter with the game already decided. Both feel Hightower gives the Red Birds another big-play threat to an already-loaded offense. The rookie has proven he can handle everything, including picking up blitzes. Gambo thinks the NFC West is over - Ash isn’t so sure. We took calls.

New #1 - Texas Tech knocked off top-ranked Texas Saturday night in Lubbock and in the process, leap-frogged idle Penn State in the BCS standings. Alabama is the new #1. Gambo thinks if Penn State wins out they deserve a shot at the title and wonders how USC beats Washington 56-0 and moved DOWN two spots. G&A agree Tech’s dramatic win was one of the better college football games they’ve ever seen. Ash feels Tech’s win over UT is more impressive than anything Penn State has done or will do the remainder of the year. Gambo says the difference in Texas Tech this season is their much-improved defense, which complements Mike Leach’s lethal spread offense. Both know the BCS still has some sorting out to do before the end of the season.

Tuesday: We have a short show before Suns basketball in New Jersey. We’ll be joined by ESPN baseball insider Tim Kurkjian and college football analyst Mark May.
