Apple of his eye

Here’s what went down Friday on G&A…

Lasting Impression…Gambo became the center of A.J. Hinch’s press conference Thursday night and, funny, Gambo didn’t even go to the game.  What started as media small-talk basically making fun of the way John talks turned into a high-stakes dare which Dave Burns was happy to accept.  $42 was collected before Hinch entered the room and it was Burnsy’s for the taking if he would ask the first question of the presser in Gambo’s voice.  He did, Hinch got a kick out of it, and now Dave is $42 richer.  The good guy Commissioner took the money and bought sporting goods to donate to Doug & Wolf’s “Gear Up For Kids” benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix.  Rumor has it Gambo gets a free dinner out of the deal, so everyone’s happy.

Apple of his eye…Amare Stoudemire has been outspoken in regards to his future here in Phoenix, or possibly elsewhere.  He went on a New York radio station recently and said he would love to play for the Knicks and former coach Mike D’Antoni.  This is just one of a few teams STAT has lobbied for on his recent radio tour.  Stoudemire said it’s a “50-50 chance” he’s coming back to Phoenix.  G&A believe a deal will get done and one suitor for a deal might be the Washington Wizards.  He likes a package including Caron Butler and Nick Young, among others, but isn’t sure of the Wizards would part with that much for Amare - especially with a questionable attitude and lingering eye concerns following a second surgery.  Gambo thinks STAT now stands for Somebody Take Amare Today.

Cards’ Pro Bowl wide receiver LARRY FITZGERALD joined us as the second week of Organized Team Activities concluded Thursday in Tempe.  Fitz shared his thoughts on the offseason and how he expects the ongoing Anquan Boldin saga to play out with training camp just a couple months away.  He is coming off a career-year which included 96 catches, 1431 yards, and 12 TD’s.  He added 30 grabs for 546 yards and 7 touchdowns in the playoffs.

Where Are They Now?…We caught up with former Sun and fan favorite, now Memphis Grizzlies radio analyst, ELLIOT PERRY.  “Socks” played 11 years in the NBA, including two stints with the Suns (1994-96 & 2000-2001).  He finished 2nd for the NBA’s Most Improved Player Award in 1994-95.  He discussed transitioning to the broadcasting field and shared his thoughts on the playoffs, which continue Friday night in Denver with Game 6 between the Lakers and Nuggets.  He also said he got his nickname from a reporter when he came out for practice one day with his socks pulled up to his knees.

D-backs infielder RYAN ROBERTS joined us to discuss his recent hot streak at the plate.  He said the team is playing better and gaining more confidence with every win.  He also shared the story behind his numerous tattoos, saying he originally only planned on getting one (a cross wrapped with barbed wire) on his left bicep.  Obviously, that has changed.

Desert Revival…The Dbacks are starting to win and people seem to be “getting back into” baseball.  Ash is one of those people.  G&A agree A.J. Hinch and his staff have done a nice job smoothing out the rough edges left behind by Bob Melvin, Bryan Price and some of the other coaches from the previous regime.  Gambo was willing to be patient with some of the younger players.

Our ESPN NBA analyst TIM LEGLER joined us to break down the Cavs Game 5 win over the Magic Thursday night in Cleveland and what he expects Friday night in Denver as the Nuggets look to stave off elimination against the Lakers at the Pepsi Center.  Just how great is LeBron James following another triple-double last night?  Legs also said Amare would love to play for Mike D’Antoni again because of the chance to play in New York and the fact that Coach Mike doesn’t exactly preach defense in practice or games - which fits right up Amare’s alley.

Team LeBron…The Cavs are still playing…barely.  Thanks to another monumental effort from LeBron James, the Cavs are getting set for a Game 6 in Orlando.  G&A are running out of catchy adjectives to describe LBJ, who recorded another triple-double and had a hand in 29 straight 4th-quarter points.  Gambo feels sorry for the city of Cleveland who craves a title so badly.  The Browns won a title way back in the mid-60s.

We were joined ON LOCATION by our ESPN NFL insider MARK SCHLERETH who’s son Daniel, a pitcher in the Diamondbacks organization,  was called up from Double-A Mobile earlier Friday.  Stink said he’s never been happier or prouder than he was Thursday night when he got the call from his son saying he was “going to The Show.”  He said they both cried during their late night conversation.

Monday we’ll be joined by Cards receiver Early Doucet.

Moving greatness?

Here’s what went down Thursday on G&A…

Seeing Greatness?…The on-again, off-again Lakers are a step away from returning to the NBA Finals following Wednesday night’s win over the Nuggets.  Los Angeles swings anywhere from Championship-caliber dominant to frustratingly inconsistent - depending on the opponent and significance of the game.  What can we take away from this years’ group?  Do you need two superstars to be a GREAT team?  The guys debated and we took calls.

$50,000 to Win a Game…George Karl and the Nuggets are not happy with the officiating following Wednesday night’s loss to the Lakers.  Following Game 4, Phil Jackson went off on the refs and was fined $50,000 by the league.  Several Nugget players were upset at the refs and openly wondered how much Jackson’s comments had to do with how the game was officiated.  Gambo doesn’t feel the NBA playoffs have any “flow” to them because of how the games are being called.  Ash wonders if adding another official would hurt or help the problem.  Gambo thinks another ref would simply add more calls to an already cluttered foul-fest like several of these post-season games have played out.  G&A agree: No sports officials are critiqued more than in the NBA.  Would instant replay help?  The guys debated.

We were joined by ASU junior right-hander MIKE LEAKE.  The two-time Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year became the first player in conference history to win the award in back-to-back seasons.  Also an academic All-American with a 3.42 GPA in management, he is 14-1 this year with a 1.24 ERA.  He has 128 strikeouts, while walking only 18.  The Devils start regional play Friday night, hosting Kent State at Packard Stadium at 7:00.  Leake was little league teammates with San Diego State phenom Stephen Strasburg.  He said the consensus #1 pick was fat and “not very good at all.”

The Chosen One…On the heels of Wednesday’s news that suspended Manny Ramirez could be one of the starting outfielders for the National League, he could be joined by 21-year old Justin Upton of your Diamondbacks.  Upton’s hitting .335 and leads the Snakes in nearly every offensive category.  Gambo feels J-Up will represent the Dbacks in St. Louis; Ash believes it will be tough-luck starter Dan Haren - who’s shown consistency all season - even without much run support from his offense.  John thinks Upton will be one of the best players in baseball in the next couple years.

Thorny Rose…The Memphis basketball program is in hot water and the source of the problem could be Bulls’ Rookie of the Year Derrick Rose.  Reports say Rose may have cheated on his SAT.  First-year coach Josh Pastner was not coaching at Memphis when Rose was recruited, but new Kentucky coach John Calipari was.  Rose reportedly never took his SAT.  So what should the NCAA do now?  Rose is a millionaire NBA star and could probably care less what happens because he got exactly what he wanted from Memphis…exposure towards a lucrative NBA deal and career.  Would punishing Memphis make sense because Pastner and his staff had nothing to do with this?  G&A think the punishment might not be severe because of that very point.  Who should be blamed in all this if anyone?  Ash wonders how this would have played out if Memphis beat Kansas last year to win the NCAA Championship.

Arizona Cardinals’ wide receiver STEVE BREASTON checked in to discuss the second week of OTA’s, which concluded earlier Thursday in Tempe.  The former Michigan Wolverine star had a breakout season in 2008, finishing with 90 receptions for 1,154 yards and 3 touchdowns.  He shared his Super Bowl experiences and how he looks to improve this offseason leading into training camp later this summer.

Windy City Trade Winds…Now that Anquan Boldin has fired Drew Rosenhaus, rumors are swirling as to who will replace Drew and represent the disgruntled wide receiver.  One possibility is Eugene Parker (Larry Fitzgerald’s agent).  A rumor is swirling that Boldin could be traded for another Parker client, Bears’ return specialist/receiver Devin Hester and a pick.  Chicago needs playmakers for new quarterback Jay Cutler and the Cards could save money by trading Boldin and bringing back the dangerous Hester plus a draft pick.  G&A don’t think this trade would make any sense for the Red Birds because they are a better team right now with Anquan Boldin rather than Devin Hester.

Superman Returns…The original Superman (Shaq) decided to take in a game to see the new Superman (Dwight Howard) Monday night in Orlando.  “The Diesel” sat courtside as the Magic beat the Cavs to take a 3-1 series lead.  This is the same guy who left Orlando to go win multiple titles with other teams and then rip head coach Stan Van Gundy and Howard after a regular season game earlier this season.  The Magic fans didn’t seem to have a problem with the affable Shaq sitting front row (the Magic apparently gave him the primo seats), but Gambo & Ash did…even to the point where they wouldn’t sell Shaq a good ticket if he wanted one.  Should Shaq have known better?  What athlete who skipped out of town could never return to sit front-and-center?  Gambo suggested Simeon Rice.  Ash said Robert Horry.  We took calls.

Friday we’ll be joined by Cards Pro-Bowler Larry Fitzgerald at 2:10 and ESPN NBA insider Tim Legler at 4:10.

Superman’s Kryptonite

Here’s what went down Wednesday on G&A…

Mark Asher returned this afternoon from illness.

Superman’s Kryptonite
…LeBron and the #1-seeded Cavs are on the verge of elimination following Tuesday night’s loss in Orlando.  In actuality, the series should be over-except for LBJ’s last-second Game 2 shot which, at the time, evened the series at 1-1.  The Cavs are having a tough time stopping the Magic’s versatile offense, particularly Dwight Howard.  Gambo thinks the solution is quite simple-put 4-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year Ben Wallace on Superman.  It’s apparent Anderson Varejao can’t handle Howard’s strength and athleticism.  Ash thinks the bigger issue is “The Master of Panic” Stan Van Gundy has thoroughly out-coached NBA Coach of Year Mike Brown.

Fran-tic Message…The greatest quarterback in Minnesota Vikings history Fran Tarkenton spoke out recently about possible Vikes’ quarterback Brett Favre.  Here is one salvo… “I think it’s despicable. What he put the Packers through last year was not good. ”Here’s an organization that was loyal to him for 17, 18 years, provided stability of organization, provided players. It just wasn’t about Brett Favre. In this day and time, we have glorified the Brett Favre’s of the world so much, they think it’s about them. He goes to New York and bombs. He’s 39 years old. How would you like Ray Nitschke in his last year [playing for] the Vikings, or I retire, and go play for the Packers? I kind of hope it happens, so he can fail.”  Gambo loves these comments because he’s sick of Favre and his me-first attitude.  Ash doesn’t agree with everything Tarkenton said, but knows Vikings’ fans would be wise to hear the underlying meaning behind his message.

Arizona State Director of Athletics LISA LOVE checked in for her weekly segment.  The #5 National Seed ASU baseball team will begin their hopeful trip to the College World Series Friday when they host Kent State at Packard Stadium, plus break down the amazing season for junior right-hander Mike Leake, and look ahead to tomorrow’s WCWS matchup between the defending champion Lady Sun Devils and Missouri in Oklahoma City.

We were joined by our ESPN baseball analyst TIM KURKJIAN.  He broke down the Dbacks recent improved play under new skipper A.J. Hinch, the amazing start of Zack Greinke who lowered his season ERA to 0.84 with a complete-game win over the Tigers last night, and the Dodgers who are running away in the NL West-even without Manny.

Rock the Vote!…The All-Star Game is just over 5 weeks away and guess who could be one of the starting outfielders for the National League?  The suspended Manny Ramirez of all people.  ESPN’s Tim Kurkjian is outraged by all this.  He believes MLB should do away with internet voting all together because the REAL baseball fans attend the games and know the players.  Gambo thinks this is an outrage and sends a terrible message if Man-Ram is allowed to play.  Ash knows the All-Star Game is a popularity contest and won’t lose sleep either way.  John thinks fans vote for their favorite players, more than the best players.  Mark then ripped him saying he votes for the Yankees starting lineup, anyway.  Do the fans hold the right to vote in the players they want or should a higher power (commissioner Selig?) step in and “make it right” for other players who haven’t been busted in the steroid circle.

We caught up with Cards’ quarterback KURT WARNER.  He shared his thoughts on his recent visit with President Obama, Anquan Boldin firing Drew Rosenhaus, the noticed maturity on and off the field of Matt Leinart, and how the second week of OTA’s are progressing in Tempe.  Warner is hopeful the organization can get a new deal done with Boldin and put this year-long power struggle to rest once and for all.

Follow the Leader?…Anquan Boldin is no longer represented by Drew Rosenhaus.  Will fellow Florida State star and Cards’ teammate Darnell Dockett follow suit?  Gambo thinks this would be in the best interest of Dockett who hasn’t gotten anywhere on a new deal with Rosenhaus at the helm.  Ash feels we could see a trickle-down effect hurting Rosenhaus’ status as the NFL’s “money maker” for some of the higher profile players around the league.

Thursday we’ll be joined by Cards’ wide receiver Steve Breaston and ASU junior ace Mike Leake.

Agent shown the door

Here’s what went down Tuesday on G&A…

Ash was sick, Gambo flew solo this afternoon.

Rosenhaus Shown the Door - Anquan Boldin will likely fire super-agent Drew Rosenhaus. Gambo is one happy man. He is wondering if this is the first step for Q to “repair his image.” He also thinks Boldin realized that for all the chattering Rosenhaus did about getting Anquan a new deal, nothing has developed on this front for nearly a year. Gambo think there’s no such thing as “outplaying your contract” like Rosenhaus frequently has said in the past. Gambo feels Anquan’s “value” is what his current deal is NOW. Every player’s value is what their respective contract states. John thinks Drew just went for the quick contract so he could get paid, without taking his client’s best interest to heart. Reports say Anquan has reached out to several different agents recently in hopes of finding Rosenhaus’ replacement.

We were joined by Cards rookie guard Herman Johnson. The 6’7, 382-pounder from LSU was taken in the 5th-round of this years’ draft. Johnson is the largest born baby in the state of Louisiana at 15 pounds and 14 ounces. He was a 1st-team All-American last season with the Tigers. The team continues their second week of OTA’s in Tempe.

Worst Ever? -  Jon Rauch’s struggles continue and they were brought to the forefront once again yesterday at Chase Field. Ahead 7-1 yesterday against San Diego, Rauch failed to record an out and opened the floodgates which eventually led the Padres tenth-straight win. Gambo thinks Rauch is the worst reliever in Diamondback history and feels AJ Hinch won’t use him much in upcoming games. How can he when he failed to retire two bottom-of-the-order Padres last night? John also feels management will be more patient with a younger, struggling Chris Young (24), than an older, struggling Eric Byrnes (33). Plus, “CY” plays better defense and doesn’t throw the ball into opposing teams’ bullpens from the outfielder.

Diamondbacks manager A.J. Hinch joined the show and discussed the recent road trip, the current home stand, his bullpen, and injuries with the Diamondbacks, particularly Conor Jackson and Brandon Webb.

Mr. T umm - ”sang” Take Me out to the Ballgame yesterday at Wrigley Field. The 57-year old actor and humanitarian fired up the Cubs’ fans by chiming “…let me root, root, root for the Cubbies” and “…one, two, three strikes you out” before saying he “pitied the Pirates.” Oh, good times. Gambo wondered if Mr. T is only 57.

Going Global - Chinese investors are close to buying a small piece of the Cleveland Cavaliers and their arena. Yes, the same Cleveland Cavaliers headlined by the great LeBron James. The Cards played in Mexico, the Suns have scheduled a preseason game to be played in Mexico,  Gambo wonders if pro sports suits are scheduling more and more International games with the purpose of getting more exposure for the sport or possibly bringing in new ownership dollars? Gambo thinks these Chinese investors will make LBJ even bigger there than he is here in America.

We were joined IN-STUDIO by Valley resident, actor, comedian, and good friend of the show Frank Caliendo. He appears on FOX NFL Sunday. He was joined in-studio by Charles Barkley, John Madden, George Bush, and Adam Sandler among others.

Money Where Your Mouth is - Cavs guard Mo Williams guaranteed yesterday that the Cavs would beat the Magic in this series and said Cleveland “is the best team in basketball. Gambo finds it funny that the All-Star guard would say something like that since he, many feel, is the reason the Cavs are losing the series.

Wednesday we’ll be joined by Cards’ quarterback Kurt Warner, ESPN baseball insider Tim Kurkjian, and ASU AD Lisa Love

Played Out?

Here’s what went down Friday on G&A…

Dave Burns filling in for one vacationing John Gambadoro

Played Out?…Interleague play starts Friday as the Diamondbacks open a 3-game set against the A’s in Oakland.  Burnsy thinks Interleague games have really lost their luster.  Ash doesn’t get real excited over it, either.  Since you, as fans, have to deal with these non-traditional games, would you rather see the Snakes play more high-profile teams (Red Sox or Yankees) and get their brains beat in or match-up against the likes of the A’s or Mariners with a better chance to stack wins?  Burnsy wants to see the best teams - regardless if that means more losses.  How about playing American League rules in National League parks and vice versa?  Would this stir up interest in Interleague play?  One e-mailer suggested a game at Chase Field…just not involving the Diamondbacks.  Ouch.  The guys debated and we took calls.

Prejudice Prevails?…The Nuggets beat the Lakers Thursday night to even the series at one apiece.  Meanwhile in the east, the Cavs hope to even the series Friday against Orlando.  The guys broke down Game 2 Thursday night at Staples Center.  Ash believes it’s evident the Nuggets don’t fear Team Kobe.  Do you attribute this to Chauncey Billups?  Burnsy has an extreme dislike for George Karl dating back to his reporting days in Seattle.  Dave only wants to see a Lakers-Cavs Finals.  Ash feels no team has played better this postseason than Denver.  David Stern and the NBA moneymakers are really pulling for a LA-Cleveland final, but are you?

Arizona State Director of Athletics LISA LOVE checked in for her weekly segment.  She previewed the defending champion Sun Devil Lady softball team, who will host North Dakota State later Friday afternoon in the Tempe Super Regional.  Plus, Pat Murphy’s baseball team looks to round into postseason form when they play three against UCLA starting Friday at Packard Stadium.

The Disappearing Hockey Team?…The Coyotes’ future is in jeopardy and it doesn’t help that reportedly only $20,000 in season tickets have been sold for next season - if the Desert Dogs’ season even happens.  Ash feels it is realistic the franchise might fold, the Coyotes players disperse to other teams around the NHL, and a brand new pretty franchise could surface in Canada.  It would also “save face” for the NHL, who needs all the PR help it can get.  Burnsy doesn’t really care what happens to the ‘Yotes and believes most of Valley doesn’t either.

Our baseball insider TIM KURKJIAN from ESPN discussed the Dbacks’ recent improved play, what to do with the slumping Chris Young, the streaking New York Yankees, and yesterday’s near deal that sent Jake Peavy to the White Sox.

Number 300…Former Diamondback Randy Johnson goes for #299 Friday against the Mariners in Seattle and could go for #300 early next month against the Snakes at Chase Field when the Giants come in for a three-game series, although he may miss Arizona in the rotation.  The guys ran down the list of possible modern day players who could one day reach that feat.  The list is small…very small.  Blue Jays ace Roy Halliday has 139 wins, but isn’t getting any younger.  Burnsy asked if 200 is the new 300 in terms of pitching milestones?  Ash thinks the modern-day pitcher doesn’t throw as much or for as long as the Randy Johnson’s, Tom Glavine’s, and Greg Maddux’s of the world.

ESPN NBA analyst TIM LEGLER joined us to share his thoughts on the Nuggets big win Thursday night in Los Angeles, the Clippers winning the Blake Griffin sweepstakes on Tuesday, and a preview of Friday’s Magic-Cavs Game 2 as Cleveland looks to even up the series.

Eye on the Future…Amare Stoudemire has made it known that he may want out of Phoenix and the rumors are swirling that that just may happen.  There is interest from several teams around the league - including the Wizards and Grizzlies.  Meanwhile, STAT is still recovering from eye surgery that kept him part of the second half of the season.  Tim Legler said he’s been told teams would want Amare even “if he came with a patch over his eye.”  Burnsy isn’t so sure that’s the case.  Why would a franchise part with key pieces and/or valued draft picks for possible damaged goods and a questionable attitude?  Ash thinks if the deal is right, the Suns should pull the trigger IF the deal makes sense.  Should teams be concerned about the talented, but damaged Stoudemire?

Too Melo?…Carmelo Anthony is taking his game and his team to the next level.  The Nuggets forward has Denver in the midst of an NBA Finals run and he’s shed his previous label of lazy, soft and unmotivated.  Anthony has played great defense on Kobe Bryant the first two games, but his national appeal isn’t there quite yet.  Burnsy reported Melo’s jersey is the 15th most popular among NBA consumers.  The likes of Nate Robinson and David Lee (big Market-New York) rank ahead of him.  Ash thinks it’s because Anthony has a checkered past, on and off the court.  He’s happy he ditched the cornrows.  Will Anthony ever make the NBA Mount Rushmore along with Kobe, LeBron, Dwight Howard and D-Wade?  The guys discussed and took calls.

No show Monday…Gambo is back Tuesday…we’ll be joined by Dbacks’ skipper A.J. Hinch and Cards’ mammoth rookie tackle Herman Johnson.

The Young & the Restless

Here’s what went down Thursday on G&A…

Abbreviated show before Diamondbacks baseball in south Florida.

The Young & the Restless
…The Dbacks split a pair with the Marlins yesterday thanks to some late-inning heroics from Justin Upton who hit two, Game 2 moon shots as the Snakes came back to avoid the doubleheader sweep.  The good…was Upton, Mark Reynolds and Geraldo Parra.  The bad…Chris Young - who struck out five times yesterday.  Gambo sees the writing on the wall and it’s not pretty.  Young even failed in a sacrifice attempt in Game 1.  The guys have been impressed with Parra, but Ash is taking a wait-and-see approach after Parra performs at a consistent high level for 2-3 months, not 2-3 weeks.  Is Parra suddenly the long-term answer at centerfield for the once-touted Young?  We took calls.

Another Classic…The Magic shocked everyone (except maybe Charles Barkley) when they beat the Cavs last night.  G&A were impressed with the play of Rashard Lewis, who came up big down the stretch.  Going into the semi-finals, people thought Kobe and the Lakers might be the team that needs to be on upset alert, but could it be LeBron and the Cavs?  The guys agree it won’t be easy for either one-seed to advance to the finals judging from the semi-final Game 1’s earlier this week.

We were joined by Hall-of-Fame, one of the leagues 50 Greatest Players, and the logo of the NBA - JERRY WEST.  The 14-time All-Star discussed his playing career, the current state of the NBA, and the shared his thoughts on the semi-final matchups.  West is a part of the Sports Legends Challenge, which is happening in the Bahamas from September 14th-17th.  For more, go to www.SportsLegendsChallenge.com.  He reiterated that LeBron James is better than Kobe Bryant and LBJ has the chance to go down as the best player in NBA history.

Reaction from Jerry West interview…guys debated who’s better - Kobe or LeBron?  Gambo doesn’t think there’s a better clutch shooter than Kobe, but if he’s starting a team, he’d take King James.

The new tight end of the Cardinals ANTHONY BECHT checked in as OTA’s continue this week in Tempe.  The Red Birds signed the 11-year pro this offseason.  He discussed playing in a pass-oriented offense with great skill players around him and his relationship with Cards’ coach Ken Whisenhunt - which dates back to when both were with the Jets.  Becht is expected to contribute immediately because of his solid blocks skills.

Getting Closer?
…NFL.com reports the Cards could be getting closer to a possible new deal for Pro-Bowler Anquan Boldin.  What can we make of this - especially when it comes from Gambo’s favorite, super agent Drew Rosenhaus?  John wonders if Anquan gets a new deal if it will set precedent for Darnell Dockett to get his deal done after the 2009 season (with two years left) like Q does.  Ash is still hoping a new deal will get done with Boldin, but he isn’t holding his breath.

We were joined by 14-year-old New York high school freshman JACLYN MURPHY.  Murphy isn’t your typical teenage lacrosse player.  She had a malignant brain tumor at age 10 and has become an inspiration for the Northwestern Women’s Lacrosse team who found out about her health issues and “adopted” her.  Now 300 teams are on the list to “adopt” children after hearing Murphy’s story.  The Lady Wildcats play Penn in the Lacrosse Final Four tomorrow in Towson, Maryland.

Full show Friday…Gambo is off…Burnsy fills in with Ash…we’ll be joined by ESPN NBA analyst Tim Legler, baseball insider Tim Kurkjian and ASU AD Lisa Love.

Bird House

Here’s what went down Tuesday on G&A…

Short show today before Diamondbacks baseball.

Bird House - OTA’s began this morning in Tempe and the Cards are back in the news again. The stories that just won’t seem to go away include the whining Anquan Boldin and Darnell Dockett, Adrian Wilson’s possible pending new deal, and what might happen with twice franchise-tagged Karlos Dansby. The guys seem to think the Cards could botch things with Dansby who’s coming off a big year and is expected to make big dollars when the franchise tag expires at the end of the season. Will the Cards get a long-term deal done before July 15th? Gambo thinks he deserves the right to test the market. Ash doesn’t have a good feeling about this is story will end. Do you?

We were joined by Cardinals linebacker Karlos Dansby. The Red Birds franchise tagged the five-year pro for the second time following an impressive 2008 season which included 119 tackles, 4 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 2 interceptions. He discussed his future with the Cards, as well as OTA’s which started this morning in Tempe.

Deisel Moving to Dallas? - Reports say the Suns and Mavericks could pull off a trade sending Shaq to Big D for Erick Dampier and Jerry Stackhouse who’s contract the Suns would buyout and essentially save Robert Sarver $10 million. Gambo doesn’t think this makes sense because Shaq’s $13 million would come off the books after next season and bringing Dampier (who has two years left) back, as well. Dampier is OK, but certainly not at $13 million per season. The Suns want to play up-tempo and the slow-footed Dampier doesn’t fit that role. Ash feels Dampier is OK, but won’t get anyone too excited about it. He would rather see Shaq dealt to New Orleans for Tyson Chandler and the expiring contract of Antonio Daniels. The salaries would match-up, but would the Hornets go for it? Gambo floated the idea of Amare to Boston for a package including Rajon Rondo and possibly Brian Scalabrine (for salary purposes). The lottery is today. G&A agree it will be an interesting summer for Steve Kerr.

Good Business Man - Ash is marveling at what WWE owner and CEO Vince McMahon is cashing in on the exposure over the scheduling conflict next Monday where the WWE is scheduled to tape a Monday Night Raw at Pepsi Center. One problem…the Nuggets need the arena for Game 4 of the Western Conference semi-finals the same night. McMahon has gotten free national exposure over the past 48 hours since the story broke. The NBA is allowing the Nuggets and WWE to resolve the issue.

Sports 620 KTAR’s Dan Weiss checked in from downtown Phoenix to update us on the latest bankruptcy news regarding the Coyotes-whose future is on shaky ground to say the least. Weiss said the power struggle continues between who exactly controlled the team-Jerry Moyes or the NHL and what makes the most sense for the broke franchise? Can the team move without the approval of the NHL? We likely won’t know for quite some time.

We were also joined by Diamondbacks’ skipper A.J. Hinch who discussed his first two weeks on the job, the “misunderstanding” between he and Doug Davis, and how the team is dealing with the other off-the-field distractions.

Ladies first

Here’s what went down Monday on G&A…

Short show this afternoon before Diamondbacks baseball in Miami.

Drama With(in) the D-backs - The club looks to make it two in a row later this afternoon as they open a 4-games series against the struggling Marlins in Miami. The bigger news, however, is off-the-field where former pitching coach Bryan Price ripped the organization for hiring the inexperienced AJ Hinch over Chip Hale and Kirk Gibson once good friend BoMel was shown the door a little over a week ago. Then Friday night, Doug Davis was not happy when pulled for a pinch-hitter in the latter innings by Hinch and words were exchanged in the dugout. Broadcaster Matt Williams defended Hinch and, in short, told Davis to shut up and play. Davis responded calling Williams, “just a front office guy.” G&A hate Williams and wonder what his true role is within the organization-he has about 5 job titles. Does he have a right to be critical of Davis when he wasn’t in the dugout to hear what was said? The guys weighed in, plus shared their thoughts on how it doesn’t appear the club is inspired to play under Hinch and the team is experiencing exactly what they don’t need at this time…several off-the-field distractions.

We were joined by D-backs starter Max Scherzer who picked up his first career win Saturday night in Atlanta. He pitched six scoreless innings, giving up just 4 hits in the 12-0 route. Scherzer lost his first seven career decisions, despite having a career ERA of 3.39 in 22 starts. He has 33 strikeouts in 37 2/3 innings pitched this season. He says the team is adjusting under new skipper A.J. Hinch and called the Hinch-Davis situation Friday night in Atlanta a “misunderstanding.”

Ladies First - Filly Rachel Alexandra won the Preakness Saturday beating Mine That Bird by a length. The last filly to win the second leg of the Triple Crown was 85 years ago. G&A agree this is a great story because the favorite, who was also sort of the underdog, won the race. The guys were pulling for Alexandra.

Final Four - The NBA playoff semi-finals start tomorrow. The Lakers took care of the Rockets in Game 7 yesterday, while the Magic eliminated the defending champion Celtics. Ash predicted both series correctly. The guys are intrigued with the match ups-especially with some “fresh blood” in each conference (Denver and Orlando). Mark wonders how much of an upset it would be if the Nuggets get past the Lakers. Gambo thinks the Lakers will roll-especially if Andrew Bynum plays like he did yesterday against Houston (16 points). Gambo knows Carmelo Anthony never plays well against the Lakers. Both feel the Cavs will dispatch Orlando.

Tuesday we’ll be joined by D-backs skipper A.J. Hinch

A busy weekend ahead

Here’s what went down Friday on G&A…

Lucky 7’s?…the Magic and Rockets held serve at home Thursday night to force all-or-nothing Game 7’s Sunday in Boston and Los Angeles.  The guys were impressed at how the Rockets took the fight out of the Lakers immediately, but Ash gives Houston no chance of winning this weekend at the Staples Center.  Gambo feels Phil Jackson’s team is soft (particularly Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom).  Ash likes Orlando’s chances in Beantown, but not Gambo.  The Rockets can’t match the Lakers talent-wise.  Can heart beat out talent?  Who ya’ got?

Our ESPN NBA analyst TIM LEGLER joined us to discuss Thursday night’s wins by the Magic and Rockets, forcing Game 7’s on Sunday.  Plus, how the Cavs and Nuggets are dealing with their extended post-season layoffs waiting for the other respective semi-final series to conclude this weekend.

Preakness Prep…a filly will race against the boys tomorrow at the Preakness in Baltimore and she very well might win it all.  Other horse owners tried to keep Rachel Alexandra (undefeated in past four races) out of the race because they knew she would have a great chance of winning.  Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird is still in line for the Triple Crown.  Are you going to be watching tomorrow and do you want to see a possible Triple Crown winner (Mine That Bird) or Rachel Alexandria?

Yer Not Big Papi!…Red Sox slugger David Ortiz is struggling in a big way.  He went 0-7 and left 12 runners on base in Thursday’s loss to the Angels.  In 144 at-bats this season Big Papi has one less homer than the slugger known as Augie Ojeda (who has one).  Where did it all go wrong for Ortiz who two years ago was one of the most feared hitters in baseball?  Does he miss Manny Ramirez that much?  Could Big Popi be the next big name involved in the steroid scandal?  The guys weighed in and shared their thoughts.

Where Are They Now?…we were joined by former Arizona State star and NFL defensive tackle JEREMY STAAT.  After his career in pro football, he followed in good friend Pat Tillman’s steps joining the Marines and serving in Iraq.  The 32-year-old is engaged and graduated Friday morning in Tempe.  Staat plans on attending Cal State Bakersfield and working towards his Master’s Degree in Theology and Public Administration.

The Untouchables

Here’s what went down Thursday on G&A…

The Untouchables
- The D-backs are “enjoying” an off day after Wednesday night’s loss to the Reds.  The sweep completes a dreadful 1-5 homestand to start the AJ Hinch era.  Gambo now agrees with Ash who yesterday said the season is all but over…in mid-May.  The guys feel the time is now to start shopping guys like Doug Davis and Scott Schoenweis - who can help teams in contention - something the Snakes don’t have to worry about in 2009.  Do you agree with Gambo & Ash that the season is a lost cause (currently 10 ½ games back in the NL West) or are you holding out hope that this season can be a success?  Gambo believes there are six “untouchable” players on this team (Geraldo Parra, Justin Upton, Stephen Drew, Max Scherzer, Dan Haren and Bryan Augenstein).  Notice one name left off that list?  Brandon Webb.  Others are Tony Pena and Chad Qualls - two effective late-inning relievers.  Who do you want to stay and who do you want to go?  We took calls.

We caught up with good friend of the program, ESPN reporter/baseball insider Pedro Gomez.  He shared his thoughts on the Diamondbacks’ dreadful start, the surprising Toronto Blue Jays, and San Diego State phenom Stephen Strasburg -  who some consider the greatest college pitcher of all-time.  Strasburg is expected to be the first overall pick by the Washington Nationals next month.  Pedro says the biggest thing hurting the Dbacks is lack of veteran leadership to help them thru these difficult times.

Best Ever? - If you haven’t heard of Stephen Strasburg, you will shortly.  The SDSU junior has been completely dominant this season - sporting an 11-0 record and tossing a no-hitter last week against Air Force.  G&A feel he is one of more underappreciated athletes around.  He is represented by Scott Boras.  Can the Nats get a deal done?  If not signed by a certain date, Strasburg can return for his senior year and be draft eligible in 2010.  Know any current struggling local MLB teams that could use another live arm on their roster??

I’m Sorry - Umpire Paul Schrieber apologized to Tigers’ slugger Magglio Ordonez who he lightly shoved last night after Ordonez was called out on strikes in Minnesota.  The story has made national headlines.  Gambo has no problem with it - especially after Schrieber said he did it so he wouldn’t have to kick Ordonez out of the game.  Manager Jim Leyland came to Ordonez’s defense and was eventually ejected.

Feeling Uncomfortable - There is a current bill in Congress that would ban “ED” commercials from 6:00A-10:00P.  Every time you turn on the TV, you are pelted with these commercials - especially during sporting events.  Gambo, a father of three, believes this is a sensitive/awkward issue when he’s watching games with his teen and pre-teen daughters.  Ash is happy he doesn’t have to go down that road with his son yet, but knows he could.  The guys discussed and took calls.

Two Years Ago Today - May 14th, 2007 Robert Horry hip-checked Steve Nash and changed the fortune of the Phoenix Suns some think to present day.  Although the Suns won game four in San Antonio, the short-handed team, following the suspensions of Amare Stoudemire and Boris Diaw, couldn’t hold off the Spurs in game five before eventually losing the series in six games.  This is certainly a sore subject for all Suns fans.  The franchise has been taken more body shots than any in their quest for an NBA Championship.  Ash thinks that single moment set the Suns back more than we’ll ever know.  The guys hate the “leaving the bench area” rule.  Gambo is convinced that 06-07 team was destined for their first title.  Does it still hurt Phoenix sports fans?  We took calls.

In the News Again - Drew Rosenhaus is at it again.  The super agent tweeted today that there may be some room for negotiation with Boldin and the Arizona Cardinals.  Rosenhaus said the $10 million proposal was “inaccurate.”  Gambo is continually annoyed by Drew’s antics because Boldin is under contract for two more seasons.  He is hoping the Red Birds stand pat with both Boldin and Darnell Dockett.  Ash is hoping the two parties can reach a new deal-especially since the Cards seem willing to work on an extension for Q.

Short show Friday before day baseball in Atlanta.  We’ll be joined by ESPN NBA analyst Tim Legler and Where Are They Now with former ASU star and NFL lineman Jeremy Staat.
