NFC Champ Camp Report

Here’s what went down Friday on Gambo & Ash…

NFC Champ Camp Report…Sports 620 KTAR reporter Johnny V. joined us LIVE from NFC Champ Camp in Flagstaff to discuss the club’s first official workout which took place at NAU earlier this morning. J-5 said Ken Whisenhunt was happy with the initial morning session, but didn’t give a timeframe for rookie holdout Beanie Wells. He also said afternoon rain showers could move the Cards’ afternoon session to the friendly confines of the Walkup Skydome.

Armed and Dangerous…The MLB trade deadline has come and gone and several teams made moves Friday. Gambo thinks the White Sox and Tigers substantially upgraded their rotation adding Jake Peavy and Jared Washburn, respectively. Ash knows Seattle may be the big winner when it’s all said and done because the M’s could re-sign the free-agent-to-be Washburn this winter. The D-backs didn’t make any moves, but G&A know a couple waiver-wire deals could be announced in August. Ash can’t remember a busier trade deadline day in recent years than Friday.

Angry as Bears?...Vikings’ wide receiver, and former Bear, Bobby Wade said Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher called out new quarterback Jay Cutler. Both players publicly denied there is any friction between the two Pro-Bowlers and the story is a non-issue. G&A aren’t buying this for a second, especially since the thin-skinned Cutler didn’t appreciate how he was handled by Broncos’ head coach Josh McDaniels. Gambo knows the best teams have quarterbacks who have quality leadership skills. Ash isn’t certain Cutler will cut it in Chicago.

Beatin’ ‘em to the Punch…Former Red Sox pitcher, now Cincinnati Reds pitcher Bronson Arroyo, came forward saying his name will likely be included on the same 2003 PED list that included Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz which surfaced on Thursday. The guys find it fascinating Arroyo is trying to “out himself” before someone else does. Gambo insists it would be in the best interest of MLB to release the entire list at once instead of getting “kicked in the stomach” every couple months when another name or two is leaked. John feels Bud Selig would rather protect the cheaters from the past, rather than protect the innocent in the same “dirty” era of baseball. Mark agrees with Gambo and feels we’ll have another name or two released in the next few weeks.

We caught up with USC senior safety Taylor Mays. The 2008 First-Team All-American and Jim Thorpe Award Finalist discussed the Trojans quest to repeat as Pac-10 Champs and how his leadership role will change this season with only 4 defensive starters returning. Mays is widely considered the best pound-for-pound football player in the country.

Looking for Work…Michael Vick is searching for a new team to start his career over with in some capacity. ESPN reported Michael Vick could earn close to $2 million playing in the upcoming 6-game UFL season. Gambo thinks Ron Mexico should take the money and run, especially facing a six-game NFL suspension from Roger Goodell. Ash feels this is a win-win for both Vick and the UFL. He will put fans in the stands and they will help the financially-strapped Vick get back on his feet.

Late Visitor to Friday’s Front Row

Here’s what went down Wednesday on Gambo & Ash…

Late Visitor to Friday’s Front Row…The D-backs dropped their second-straight to the Phillies Tuesday, but Gambo & Ash think the bigger story was Mark Reynolds’ monster 2-run, 481-foot bomb in the ninth.  A ball hit so far it landed at Friday’s Front Row and is unofficially the longest homerun hit this season in the majors.  Gambo thinks Reynolds is one of, if not, the best power hitter in the game today.  Ash is certain the D-backs’ third baseman is becoming the face of the franchise, even though he might not be the best player on the team.

Among the Best?…Gambo believes the 25-year-old Reynolds has officially established himself as a “40 plus homerun guy.”  Ash feels he’s one of the best in the game, but behind the likes of Albert Pujols, Manny Ramirez, Adam Dunn, A-Rod, Ryan Howard and Prince Fielder.  John feels, before his career is over, Reynolds has the potential to hit upwards of 400-500 homers.  Gambo is amazed how the ball explodes off of Reynolds’ bat.

Reno Aces first baseman and Diamondbacks prospect BRANDON ALLEN discussed the trade that brought him from the White Sox for reliever Tony Pena earlier this month.  Allen is hitting .348 with 8 homers, 17 RB’s, and an OPS of 1.252 in 16 games with the Aces.  He is expected to be the full-time first baseman with the D-backs next season.

Quite a Week…On the heels of his perfect game Thursday against the Rays, Mark Buehrle etched his name in the record books again Tuesday night in Minnesota.  The White Sox ace retired a major league-record 45 consecutive batters and took another perfect game into the seventh before eventually losing the game.  The guys agree this will certainly be the most memorable loss in Buehrle’s career.  Gambo loves the way the finesse-throwing lefty keeps hitters off balance with breaking pitches and works quickly on the mound.

Indians Pushed off the Cliff…The World Series champion Phillies acquired reigning Cy Young Award winner Cliff Lee for a trio of prospects on Wednesday.  G&A know, regardless of the prospects traded, this is an absolute steal for the Phils - especially when they were able to keep top pitching prospect Kyle Drabek.  The only slight reservation Mark has is Lee has yet to pitch in the post-season, but the same can be said for Roy Halladay who, as the Phils found out, would come at a much steeper price.  The guys are confused at the direction the Indians are heading after dealing Lee and slugger Ryan Garko earlier this week.

A Point to Prove…Your NFC Champion Cardinals headed up the hill to Flagstaff Wednesday morning with two-a-days starting Friday morning at NAU.  G&A are certain Ken Whisenhunt’s biggest challenge is to prove his team is not a “one-year wonder” like the Jake Plummer-led Red Birds of 1998, who flamed out and didn’t return to the post-season until last year.  John is certain this team, with an abundance of young talent, will perform up to expectations - especially in the weak NFC West.  Ash knows the Red Birds got a break with two home playoff games in 2008 and believes the 49ers will likely represent the stiffest challenge in the division.  The guys debated how the team will perform with new offensive and defensive coordinators.  One thing that isn’t a question is the greatness of Larry Fitzgerald, who tweeted Wednesday that he’s in full training camp mode.  The guys already feel sorry for secondaries around the league.  Gambo knows the only things that can stop the Cardinals’ offense are poor weather and, more importantly, themselves.

Staying Close to Home?…Michael Vick is free to sign with any team interested and one possible suitor is the Baltimore Ravens.  John Harbaugh’s team is the first to publicly say they have considered signing the former Virginia Tech star after more than a dozen say they won’t touch the troubled quarterback.  G&A are curious what role he could fulfill with the Ravens with Joe Flacco entrenched as the starter.  Gambo wonders if Vick could go unsigned by an NFL team in 2009.  Ash still isn’t convinced Vick’s headaches overcome his talent on the field.  In short, would Vick be a locker room distraction?  John feels the Vikings make sense after Tuesday’s Brett Favre announcement, although Brad Childress shot down the idea Wednesday afternoon.

We were joined by our baseball insider TIM KURKJIAN from ESPN.  He shared his thoughts on Mark Buehrle’s amazing run (45 scoreless innings), the Cliff Lee deal that went down earlier today, the future of Roy Halladay and others with the trade deadline on Friday.  Kurkjian loved the trade from Philly’s perspective and said there’s a chance they could still acquire Halladay if they agree to part with top prospects like Drabek.

Tough Decision…It’s apparent the D-backs are at a crossroads with Cy Young award winner Brandon Webb.  Rumors are swirling that GM Josh Byrnes may let “Webby” walk if he can’t prove healthy enough to pitch to the caliber he did the past few years.  He is eligible an $8.5 million option if picked up by the organization.  Ash, who knew Webb “wasn’t right” after his opening day start against the Rockies, thinks it’s time to part ways at the end of the season.  John thinks it could take a year or two for him to regain his form following the on-going shoulder problems.  Webb says he’s hoping for an early-September return to the mound after opting not to have surgery.  G&A agree it all comes down to making a smart business decision and that will ultimately decide his fate.

Cards NFC Champs Camp Countdown…The guys broke down the importance of the Red Birds “protecting the nest” this season in hopes of stockpiling wins and getting home field deep in the playoffs.  Gambo insists the NFC West is the Cards’ to lose.  Ash feels the 49ers, if they can get consistent quarterback play, could serve as stiff competition for a division championship repeat for Ken Whisenhunt’s team.  Both agree the Birds won’t creep up on anyone this year.

Thursday we’re LIVE at the brand new Majerle’s in Goodyear and we’ll check in with KTAR reporter Johnny V. at Pac-10 Football Media Day in Los Angeles

Quality Garbage

Here’s what went down Tuesday on Gambo & Ash.

Quality Garbage…Jon Garland suffered the loss Monday, but by the book, had a “quality start.”  Gambo hates this term because there’s really nothing quality about giving up three earned runs in six innings.  It equates to an ERA of 4.50, which John feels is anything but “quality” for a starting pitcher.  Ash agrees saying the term is simply a catch-phrase which helps, or hurts, pitchers when they are negotiating a new deal.  With the trade deadline Friday, G&A are thinking there won’t be too many deals for Josh Byrnes and his staff simply because the D-backs farm staff isn’t stocked with major league-ready players to fill those roster spots.

Phanatic Phans
…The D-backs got a nice push at the box office Monday night, but it wasn’t because of the home team.  G&A were both amazed at the large number of Phillies fans at Chase Field for the first game of the series.  Gambo said the organization made a mistake have ushers tell fans to not stand up and cheer when the team began play back in the late 90s.  The shift of power has happened for the Arizona Cardinals with University of Phoenix Stadium serving as a true home-field advantage for Ken Whisenhunt’s team.  Case in point, the Cowboys’ game last year where a sea of red consistently drowned out America’s Team supporters.  G&A concur you can’t tell people how to cheer at a sporting event.

The Power of Goodell
…NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is back in the news, but it has nothing to do with disciplining a troubled player.  Recently anointed NFLPA rep DeMorris Smith is attempting to wrestle some power away from Goodell in hopes getting more equality for the players Morris represents.  John thinks Goodell has done a wonderful job playing “bad cop” with Pacman Jones, Michael Vick and others, and Smith is simply trying to wield some power back to the players.  The Commissioner needs the power-something Bud Selig doesn’t have in baseball right now.  Ash thinks certain circumstances should be handled differently, regardless of what sport it is.  In short, detail a set of rules and let the players know the consequences of their actions before they make a lapse in judgment.  Mark feels Goodell acts for the good and protection of the league, not himself.  Gambo feels the troublemakers are the ones causing the fuss regarding Goodell’s power.

Retired…again…Brett Favre told the Vikings thanks, but no thanks.  The legendary quarterback made it official, saying he will stay retired and not sign with Brad Childress’ team.  Gambo feels this officially ends Favre’s career.  Ash isn’t so sure, knowing the future hall-of-famer has led us down this road before.  Mark knows the trend of bringing signal-callers out of retirement is quite common (Vinny Testaverde, Steve DeBerg).  Favre said he doesn’t want to go thru the “mental and physical grind.”  Ash is certain he is referring to training camp and meaningless pre-season games.  John knows quarterback play in the NFL is poor and that could ultimately decide Favre’s future in 2009 - especially if a “headline starter” (Tom Brady) gets seriously injured.  One thing is certain:  all Vikings fans can go back to hating Brett Favre.  Gambo is excited we have closure to this saga, at least for now.

We were joined by D-backs’ skipper A.J. HINCH who discussed Monday’s disappointing loss to the Phillies and the emergence of Miguel Montero both behind the plate and with his bat.

Shaq Goes WWE…Cavs center Shaquille O’Neal hosted WWE’s “RAW” last night in Washington, D.C.  The former Sun even stepped in the ring and went toe-to-toe with “The Big Show,” one of the WWE’s largest wrestlers.  Gambo wonders what LeBron James must be thinking just weeks after O’Neal coined his “win a ring for the King” slogan when introduced in Cleveland.  Is Shaq that serious about bringing a title to Cleveland?  Ash believes there few more popular athletes around than Shaq.  Gambo is certain the marketable O’Neal will continue to rake in millions following his playing career and take his worldwide popularity to another level.

Cards NFC Champs Camp Countdown…The Cards agreed to terms with 2nd-round pick Cody Brown Tuesday.  Gambo reported 1st-round pick Beanie Wells, one of the league’s four current unsigned first-rounders, is expected to come to terms with the team in the coming days.  Mark doesn’t seem too concerned with getting Wells to Flagstaff.  John is certain the starting running back job is his to lose.

Wednesday we’ll be joined by D-backs first base prospect Brandon Allen at 1:40 and ESPN baseball insider Tim Kurkjian at 3:25

Not Haren’s Night

Here’s what went down Friday on Gambo & Ash…

Not Haren’s Night…The Diamondbacks won, but, for once, it wasn’t because of Dan Haren, who pitched his shortest outing of the year before leave after five innings and getting a no-decision.  Mark isn’t overly concerned, mostly because the D-backs won a game their ace started - which is to be expected.  Gambo was impressed the Snakes stepped up and beat a bad team at home after falling behind early.

Who’s on First?…Gambo reported Chad Tracy will get more opportunities at first base over the next several games.  This coincides with the trade deadline which is just over a week away.  Tracy, who had been playing sparingly since the club recalled Josh Whitesell following Tony Clark’s release, had a big pinch-hit three-run homer in Thursday’s win over Pittsburgh.  Ash feels Tracy will likely be gone by this time next week - especially knowing the team will not pick up his option next year with Brandon Allen waiting in the wings to take over first base full-time.  John feels Whitesell could lock up the back-up spot if he plays well over the final two months of the season.

Holliday Shopping…The A’s dealt slugging outfielder Matt Holliday to the Cardinals Friday for a trio of prospects - including former ASU third baseman Brett Wallace.  Gambo is certain this deal backfired for A’s GM Billy Beane, who dealt closer Huston Street and talented Carlos Gonzalez to the Rockies this past off-season.  Mark is certain Holliday’s numbers were inflated and Colorado dealt him at just the right time.  That being said, the guys like the trade from a St. Louis perspective because they got protection for Albert Pujols and kept top-prospect Colby Rasmus in the process.

Staying or Going?…The Jazz are still deciding what the future holds for All-Star forward Carlos Boozer.  Teams interested include Chicago, Detroit and Miami, among others, but reports say Utah may hold on to him after all.  Ash thinks Boozer will be dealt before the season starts.  Elsewhere, Andre Miller is close to becoming a Portland Trailblazer.  Gambo feels this makes sense, especially since former UofA guard Jarryd Bayless struggled in summer league play.

My Mistake…The cat is out of the back and Steve Spurrier is guilty on all counts of not voting Tim Tebow All-SEC 1st-team.  In a football-crazed conference like the SEC, does it come as any surprise that this wasn’t viewed as a really big deal?  G&A find this story amusing because you never know what to expect from the ‘Ole Ball Coach.  Spurrier claims his Director of Football Operations at South Carolina filled out the ballot and didn’t vote Tebow “because he had 10 Florida players on the list already.”

21 Year-Old Virgin…The most recognizable player in college football is a virgin.  Devout Christian Tim Tebow has never had sex.  Gambo says, so what?  He is fascinated why America has to know every little detail about every athlete.  He is certain this isn’t “journalism.”  Ash knows the Heisman Trophy Winner could do whatever he wants with whoever he wants, especially at a “sexy” school like Florida.  Mark blames our fast-food society, which includes tabloid magazines, the Internet, Facebook and Twitter help keep us in the loop of high-profile athletes and personalities, probably too much in the loop.  Gambo would love for one of his daughters to marry a great role model like Tebow and applauds him for his honestly.

The Team to Beat
…again?…College football is just over a month away and the guys can’t wait.  Ash is looking forward to seeing a core of great quarterbacks including Tebow, Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy.  Ash likes the Longhorns to win it all, while Gambo is seeing a Florida repeat.

Silence for $7 Million…Former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan will still be the highest paid coach in 2008 without calling a single play if he keeps his mouth shut and doesn’t rip his former team.  Gambo knows the players already hate new Denver coach Josh McDaniels.  If Shanahan plays his cards right, he could be coaching the Cowboys in 2010.

Manic Monday?…Michael Vick could know more about his playing future by early next week.  Reports say Roger Goodell is leaning towards a 4-game suspension for the troubled quarterback.  G&A are fine with this.  Gambo initially thought Vick would never play another down of football when he was convicted on dog fighting charges.

Former Diamondback prospect, now Pirates starter ROSS OHLENDORF, broke down the Pirates’ season.  Ohlendorf, who attended Princeton and was brought over in a trade with the Yankees last July, will start Saturday night against the D-backs.  He is tied for the team-high in wins with eight and said he is looking forward to making his debut at Chase Field, albeit in a Pirates’ uniform.

Mount Montero
…Miguel Montero continues to be not only the hottest hitting catcher in the National League, but the NL’s hottest hitter, period.  Gambo reported that the D-backs will shop injured backstop Chris Snyder if Montero continues to impress at the plate and improve his defensive skills.  Ash is wondering what the trade market will be for Snyder, who’s been terrible at the plate all year and hurt for the past several games.

Cooperstown Calling
…Jim Rice and Rickey Henderson will enter the National Baseball Hall of Fame this weekend.  Gambo, the biggest Yankee fan around, always loved the way Rice played for the hated Red Sox.  Ash says you won’t find two completely different personalities than the modest Rice and the eccentric Henderson.  He is anxious to see how each details their respective HOF speeches on Sunday.  Both agree there may not be a more entertaining player in baseball history than Henderson.

We were joined by Diamondbacks closer CHAD QUALLS who discussed his season and the likelihood of him wearing a Diamondbacks uniform at this time next week when the trade deadline expires.  Qualls has converted 18 of 22 save chances for the Snakes this season.  He expressed he would like nothing more than to remain the D-backs’ closer.

The newest member of the Oakland A’s, BRETT WALLACE, joined us Friday.  The northern California native and former ASU star was part of the blockbuster deal that sent slugger Matt Holliday from Oakland to the St. Louis Cardinals.

A Perfect Afternoon

Here’s what went down Thursday on Gambo & Ash…

A Perfect Afternoon in Chicago…Chicago White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle pitched a perfect game Thursday afternoon against the Tampa Bay Rays at U.S. Cellular Field.  This comes on the heels of Buehrle’s no-hitter back in 2007 against the Rangers.  This marked the first perfect game since Randy Johnson’s back on May 18, 2004 against the Braves in Atlanta.  G&A agree defensive replacement Dewayne Wise saved the day robbing Gabe Kapler of a homer in the top of the ninth to help ensure perfection.  Perfect games happen approximately once every 11,000 games.

We were joined by former Diamondback LUIS GONZALEZ, who discussed Buehrle’s perfect game, the 16th in recorded baseball history, and what it’s like to be a part of such a historic event.  Gonzo was a part of Randy Johnson’s perfect game back in 2004.  He said there’s a great deal of pressure on every play and even, every pitch during the baseball milestone.  He says it’s especially satisfying for the catcher because he works so closely to the pitcher the entire game.

Dumping a Diamondback?…With the trade deadline just around the corner, Gambo reported teams are calling Josh Byrnes for a couple different players - with closer Chad Qualls gaining the most attention.  The Tampa Bay Rays are one team interested.  Ash knows Qualls holds extra value because he is under contract thru the 2010 season.  The guys agree Byrnes better be blown away by an offer if he’s going to deal the club’s most consistent reliever.

Weekend Draft Dodgers…The NFL announced Thursday they will be moving the draft from the weekend to primetime during the week starting next year.  The new three-day format will start April 22, 2010 with complete coverage of only the first round starting at 4:30 Arizona time.  Rounds two and three of the draft will take place the following night with rounds four thru seven taking place Saturday the 24th at 7:00AM Arizona time.  Gambo and Ash don’t like the new schedule, although they admit Roger Goodell will get more exposure getting the event in primetime and stretching it out an extra day.  John thinks any way the NFL can expand and, in the process, make more money, they will pursue it.

Speaking Out…Steelers Super Bowl champion quarterback Ben Roethlisberger spoke out publicly for the first time this afternoon regarding the sexual harassment suit brought against him stemming from an alleged incident last July in Lake Tahoe.  John is happy Big Ben came forward and defended himself publicly, instead of releasing a statement like athletes tend to do.  Ash is confident nothing will become of this and still questions what took so long for the defendant to file the suit in the first place, especially since published reports say she has been mentally unstable for the past several months.

Look Who Joined the Party!…ESPN, after initially refusing to report on the Roethlisberger alleged sexual assault case, finally went with the story on the same day Big Ben commented on the incident.  On a Tweet today, Cards defensive tackle Darnell Dockett feels there’s a bit of racism by ESPN not reporting on this story, knowing full well they had no problem running with the story when black athletes Kobe Bryant, DeShawn Stevenson and Mike Tyson were accused of similar charges.  Gambo believes Dockett may actually have a point.  Ash is annoyed how one of the world’s largest news outlets is quickly becoming big news themselves.  Case in point: the Roethlisberger ordeal and the Erin Andrews nude video saga.

Our baseball insider TIM KURKJIAN from ESPN discussed Buehrle’s perfect game, the amazing run of the Dodgers, the streaking Astros and Yankees and the likelihood of Toronto ace Roy Halladay and A’s slugger Matt Holliday getting dealt before next week’s deadline.

Mannywood!…Manny Ramirez is at it again.  The Dodgers’ slugger stepped off the bench ice cold and jacked a tie-breaking pinch-hit grand slam as LA beats the Reds 6-2.  Man-Ram, even after serving a 50-game suspension, is on pace to drive in 100 runs this season.  Ash knew before the season started the Dodgers were clearly the team to beat in the NL West.  Gambo feels, hands down, he is the most feared hitter in baseball.  Mark says the Dodgers and now red-hot Yankees are on a World Series collision course this fall.

We were joined by Suns assistant coach DAN MAJERLE.  “Thunder Dan” shared his thoughts on coaching the Summer League Suns in Vegas and the play of young players Robin Lopez, Goran Dragic and rookie Earl Clark.  He also previewed the new Majerle’s Sports Grill, which is set to open Monday in Goodyear.  It will be Majerle’s third Valley-based restaurant.

Out of Jail, Straight to the Strip Club?…Reports say Michael Vick may have celebrated his new-found freedom at a Virginia Beach, Virginia with good friend Allen Iverson.  Both parties’ lawyers have since denied the allegations saying Vick and AI have not seen each other since Vick’s release.  Gambo has absolutely no problem with Vick hitting the strip club, especially since he was away in jail for the past several months.  Mark believes, if true, this is a lapse in judgment by Vick because the NFL and strip clubs have a negative connotation right now.  See Pacman Jones.  In related news, Roger Goodell could reinstate Vick to the NFL, but not before serving a four-game suspension levied by the NFL.

Friday we’ll be joined by former Diamondback, now Pirates starter Ross Ohlendorf at 3:10 and Diamondbacks closer Chad Qualls at 5:10.

Sent to the bench

Here’s what went down Tuesday on Gambo & Ash…

As Rocky as the Mountains Around Him…Doug Davis was lit up last night in Colorado giving up eight earned runs in just 2 1/3 innings. Double D’s ERA climbing (3.95), while his trade value is dropping which isn’t what Josh Byrnes wants to see with the trade deadline just 10 days away. Gambo wonders if all the trade speculation is getting to Davis. Mark insists he’s nothing more than a .500 what-you-see-is-what-you-get pitcher. Both know the $10 million/year salary he is demanding this offseason is far-fetched in this poor economic time we’re experiencing.

Benched…D-backs’ skipper A.J. Hinch benched Justin Upton Monday night in Denver after the All-Star was upset following a 6th-inning at-bat. J-Up is 11-63 (.174) in the past 16 games. G&A agree there isn’t a great deal of pressure on him to perform on one of the worst teams in baseball. Gambo likes the passion, but feels Upton needs to control his emotions as he is looked upon as one of the leaders on this young team. He is simply going thru a bad stretch like all pro athletes do…even the best. Mark wonders how a talented, power hitter like Upton can go all month, to this point, without hitting one double.

Interest in Nash…Gambo reported the Portland Trailblazers was the team most interested in trading for Steve Nash. John said Portland was not willing to part with the core of their team (Brandon Roy, LaMarcus Aldridge, Rudy Fernandez), but instead offered Travis Outlaw and Martell Webster. Ash has hoped the team would deal Nash for well over a year. Gambo believes the team could still deal Nash because there was no trade clause in his recently agreed upon extension.

We Hardly Knew ‘Ya…Matt Barnes one-year stay with the Suns is over as the versatile swingman has agreed to terms with the Eastern Conference Champion Orlando Magic. Gambo knows the Suns will miss Barnes’ defensive versatility. Mark knows his exit will open up additional playing time for Grant Hill and possibly, rookie Earl Clark.

Peepholed…Sexy ESPN sideline reporter Erin Andrews was videoed nude thru a hotel room peephole. The video search has been one of the most popular on-line hits since the story broke. All jokes aside, this story disgusts Gambo & Ash. Gambo knows Andrews feels violated as well she should. Ash is disgusted by this clear invasion of privacy, but knows in the long run this will only help Andrews-like it did Pamela Anderson and Paris Hilton. Gambo disagrees, knowing Andrews is a professional and now must face the shame of knowing nearly every athlete she interviews has seen her naked. John believes she wants to be successful for all the right reasons and this certainly isn’t one of them.

We were joined by Arizona Republic columnist Paola Boivin who shared her thoughts on what happened in regards to Erin Andrews being secretly videotaped in the privacy of her hotel room recently. Paola knows, as sad as this is, this is simply a dark side of our society and sex continues to sell.

Pleading Innocent…Ben Roethlisberger has been accused of sexual assault stemming from a hotel incident last July in Lake Tahoe. G&A aren’t sure what to make of the story, because frequently these cases come about and eventually fizzle into nothing. Gambo believes Big Ben needs to be more careful because high-profile athletes have targets on their backs everywhere they go. Ash wonders why it took the plaintiff Andrea McNulty so long to come forward with her case.

Protecting Big Ben…ESPN has decided not to mention the Ben Roethlisberger assault allegations in any broadcast or in on-line content. ESPN will not report the story in hopes of continuing their “positive relationship” with the Super Bowl Champion quarterback who is a frequently contributor to the network. Old-school journalist Gambo is incensed by this knowing ESPN’s job is to report the news, something they’re clearly not doing with this story. Ash is dumb-founded how the “mothership of sports” is failing to uphold any sort of integrity.

We were joined by Diamondbacks’ manager A.J. Hinch who discussed last night’s loss to Colorado, the recent struggles of Doug Davis, and why Justin Upton was benched in the sixth inning last night in Denver.

Milestone for Manny…Dodgers slugger Manny Ramirez passed Mickey Mantle for 15th on the all-time homerun list last night as LA continued their winning ways. Gambo is annoyed every time a legend of the game is passed in the record books. Los Angeles also got a lift with the return of Jason Schmidt who pitched five innings to get the win. John isn’t convinced Schmidt will ever return to his dominant self because his velocity is nowhere near what it once was. Meanwhile up the coast, the Giants continue to stay in the wildcard race.

Short show tomorrow after day baseball in Denver.

Big Assist for Suns

Here’s what went down Monday on Gambo & Ash…

Big Assist for Suns…The Suns and Steve Nash has agreed to terms on a two-year extension worth $22 million.  The 2-time All-Star will defer $3 million each year which will be paid in years four and five.  Both feel the term “deferred payment” scares them judging from all the money the D-backs are still shelling out to the likes of Russ Ortiz, Randy Johnson and Luis Gonzalez, among others.  The deal does not include a no-trade clause.  Gambo feels the extension makes sense for both parties.  Ash is still convinced the Suns should shop Nash, especially if they can stockpile future first-round draft picks that they foolishly traded away to clear cap space.  Mark is predicting the Suns will follow suit with Amare Stoudemire and sign him to a new deal, especially since the Suns know they can’t get “fair value” in a trade for STAT.  Gambo knows Amare will have a big year, simply because it’s a contract year.

Where it all Went Wrong…59-year-old Tom Watson was an eight-foot par putt away on 18 from winning the British Open Sunday in Scotland.  Instead, the missed putt opened the door for Stewart Cink - who forced a four-hole playoff and eventually claimed his first major championship.  G&A found themselves openly cheering for Watson throughout the weekend and both felt confident entering the final round that the title was his to lose…which, in all actuality, it was.

No Rival Needed?…Although Tiger Woods failed to make the cut at the British Open, he is still hands down the greatest golfer in world.  G&A agree there is no clear-cut rival to Tiger and likely never will be - Phil Mickelson is considered a “one-sided” rival.  Ash feels golf and general sports fans everywhere were captivated by Watson’s improbable run in the British Open.  Mark believes these “blasts from the past” are more of what the game needs.  The guys agree they found themselves pulling for the 59-year-old Watson, even if that meant denying Cink his first major championship.

Summer Struggles…With the Vegas Summer League in full-swing, some of the younger players like Robin Lopez and Goran Dragic have struggled playing against NBA rookies and free-agents in Sin City.  Dragic responded Sunday night scoring 21 points and dishing out 7 assists, while rookie Earl Clark played great defense on number one overall pick Blake Griffin.  G&A are certain the Steve Kerr, Dave Griffin and the Suns’ will be looking to add another point guard and center this summer before training camp in October.

Diamondbacks catcher MIGUEL MONTERO checked in from Denver to discuss his 7-12 weekend at the plate in St. Louis, including 4-5 Saturday.  He said he’s feeling more comfortable behind the plate and complemented A.J. Hinch for showing confidence in him since Chris Snyder’s injury.  Montero said he will miss good friend Felipe Lopez - who was traded to Milwaukee Sunday - but knows it was simply a business decision - especially with Lopez in the final year of his deal.

We were joined by Colorado Rockies manager JIM TRACY whose team is preparing to start a three-game series against the D-backs Monday evening at Coors Field in Denver.  Tracy is 32-14 with the club after taking over for the fired Clint Hurdle earlier this year.  The Rockies are just ½ game behind the Giants for the NL Wildcard spot.

Lopez, Leaving…Talented, but lazy Felipe Lopez was traded over the weekend to the Brewers for two minor league prospects, including former Oregon State star Cole Gillespie.  Lopez has now played for five major league teams in his young career.  Ash knows, offensively, Lopez can hit (.301), but feels his poor work ethic and lazy play - like not sliding - eventually punched his ticket out of town.  John says the Lopez deal will save the Snakes $1.4 million.

Who’s Next?…The D-backs’ dealing may continue before the trade deadline on July 31st.  Gambo reported there is little trade interest in light-hitting Chad Tracy, but the D-backs have fielded calls for Jon Garland, Doug Davis and Chad Qualls.  G&A discussed who might be the next player dealt.  John says a lot will depend on what the farm situation looks like at that current position.  Ash had hoped teams would have offered a bag of balls and a rosin bag for injured Eric Byrnes, but no such luck.

Credibilty Issue?…National columnist Jason Whitlock said a Tom Watson British Open win would be a blow to Tiger Woods and his competition and be a blow to the credibility for the game of golf.  His argument is how can a near 60-year-old man win a national stage event like the British Open?  Ash says this makes no sense, because golf is a game of skill and has little to do with your age.  Gambo says all athletes come in different shapes and sizes and Watson is no different.  John says Watson caught lightening in a bottle and was in contention because Turnberry was perfectly suited for the type of golf he plays.  Both agree the weekend was great for golf, even if there was no happy ending except for Cink, his family and over 500,000 Twitter followers.

Reality Shaq…Cavs’ center Shaquille O’Neal is the latest sports superstar to venture into the reality television world.  “Shaq Vs.” will appear on ABC starting in mid-August.  Pro athletes will challenge Shaq in their own sport.  Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will be on the debut episode August 18th.  The guys don’t seem to have a problem with this, but know Shaq better get in “basketball mode” quickly because LeBron James wants a championship ring…badly.  Ash said he would like to challenge O’Neal in a free-throw shooting contest.  Gambo isn’t sure he could take down Shaq in boxing, but might give it a try.

Tuesday we’ll be joined by Dbacks’ skipper A.J. Hinch at 3:00.

Missing the Point

Here’s what went down Friday on Gambo & Ash…

Tiger’s Tough Times at Turnberry…The near-impossible happened Friday at the British Open.  If you were planning on getting up early this weekend to Tiger Watch, don’t bother.  Tiger Woods failed to make the cut at a major for only the second time in his storied career after shooting a second-round four over 74.  Some guy named Steve Marino is atop the leaderboard, along with Tom Watson.  G&A are stunned by Tiger’s early departure and know this will only make him work harder in the future.

Strong Statement…59-year old Tom Watson is still atop the British Open leaderboard, bouncing back from a slow start on the front-nine sinking 45 and 75-foot birdie putts to get back in contention after a solid opening round on Thursday.  Gambo is caught up in the Watson hype and believes it will keep people’s interest, even on a Tiger-less weekend.  Ash could not disagree more, knowing no Tiger equals no interest - which is bad news for TNT and NBC this weekend.  Mark says he will check in from time-to-time, but won’t devote most of his day to the British Open.  John insists the ratings will be higher this year simply because of Watson’s improbable run.  The guys debated.

Missing the Point
…As the Suns continue to finalize an extension for Steve Nash, their other point guard, Goran Dragic, has done little to impress Suns’ coaches in the on-going Vegas Summer League.  The guys discussed what direction the club might go if the second-year Dragic fails to develop as they had hoped following his rookie year.  Ash is thinking we’re not getting the whole story behind Dragic’s inconsistent play.

Reunited in South Beach?
…Dwayne Wade wants help in Miami, specifically talented forwards Carlos Boozer and Lamar Odom.  The Heat has made a $35 million offer to the free agent Odom and have contacted Utah about trading for Boozer.  D-Wade also announced he is shifting his shoe sponsorship from Converse to Nike.  Gambo believes the move makes sense since Nike owns Converse.

The Fall of Yao?
…Yao Ming will likely not be playing basketball this upcoming season for the Rockets after undergoing foot surgery.  The 28-year old is hoping surgery now will prevent further injury concerns.  G&A feel this could be the beginning of the end for 7’6 giant.

Raining on Pacman’s Parade…ESPN uncovered video of Pacman Jones’ visit to a Las Vegas strip club back early 2007.  It shows the former Titan and Cowboy prancing around the club with $40,000 in one dollar bills, hanging out with rappers Nelly and Jermaine Dupri.  Jones flipped dollars around the club, then scolded the dancers for collecting the money before the “rainstorm” ended.  G&A are amazed any adult establishment would allow video footage from any outsiders.  After watching the video, Ash is relieved he finally saw someone “make it rain,” even if it was on espn.com.  Gambo was introduced to some classic Nelly songs.  Both agree this new video and information regarding the subsequent shooting incident outside the club should signal an end to Jones’ rollercoaster NFL career.
