Here’s what went down Tuesday on Gambo & Ash…
Help from Down Under…Career minor leaguer Trent Oeltjen continues to impress during his current week-long stay in the Majors. The Aussie homered Monday night as the D-backs opened their homestand with a win over the Mets. Ash isn’t calling Oeltjen the next Ken Griffey, JR but is intrigued by what he’s seeing thus far. Gambo knows Oeltjen isn’t here to simply fill a void, but win a spot on 2010 roster in-flux at this point.
A Decision to Make…ESPN baseball insider Buster Olney told Doug & Wolf Tuesday that the D-backs would be wise to drop the $2 million buyout on injured Brandon Webb and spend their money elsewhere. Gambo agrees with Olney feeling it would be in the club’s best interest to find another complement to Dan Haren. Ash feels Max Scherzer has the skill-set to move his way up to the top of the rotation in the next couple years. The guys know Webby hopes the D-backs pick up his $8.5 million option-especially with his pitching career in jeopardy following shoulder surgery last week.
We were joined by former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell who discussed the current state of the sport and his involvement with the Sports Legends Challenge set to take place September 14-17th at Atlantis Paradise Island, Bahamas.
Birds of a Feather…With injured Beanie Wells not expected to play in Thursday’s pre-season game against the Steelers, second-year back Tim Hightower has made the most of his opportunities practicing with the first-team at NFC Champ Camp. The guys find it interesting Wells is still sidelined with a sprained ankle which happened nearly ten days ago. Gambo knows the “two-headed monster” running back approach is commonplace now in the NFL. Ash feels, although not statistically-speaking, the Red Birds were able to run the ball when they had to last season. John believes the starting spot is Hightower’s to lose.
Decision Soon?…Mentor Tony Dungy says Michael Vick could land with an NFL team within the next couple days. G&A know teams could be waiting to sign Vick until camps close and media access is limited to only certain times. That being said, Ash knows the media circus will follow Ron Mexico wherever he signs. Both feel Vick has served his debt to society and, with Roger Goodell’s blessing, deserves a second life in the NFL.
On Topp(s) of the World…Topps Trading cards have signed a deal with Major League Baseball in hopes of eliminating competitive fields like Upper Deck and Fleer. G&A shared their favorite childhood stories of trading cards with buddies and how the card trading boon of the 80’s ruined card collectors for future generations. Ash’s generation bought and sold cards, while Gambo “scaled” and “flipped” cards with friends back in New York. Mark isn’t sure today’s kids will ever get back into card collecting, likely because a pack can cost upwards of $5.00/pack. Gambo feels if companies lower the price per pack, kids would get back into card collecting.
We caught up with the skipper of the Diamondbacks A.J. Hinch who went over the myriad of roster moves including sending struggling Chris Young to Triple-A Reno. He also discussed the team recalling Daniel Schlereth, while placing Scott Schoenweis on the 15-day disabled list with depression.
We were joined by Sports 620 KTAR’s Rod Lakin who checked in LIVE from NFC Champ Camp in Flagstaff to re-cap the team’s single workout which took place earlier this afternoon on the practice fields at NAU. He said Beanie Wells didn’t practice Tuesday and is doubtful to see any action Thursday night.
Still King…The weekend TV numbers are in and the viewers have spoken. 2.8 million people watched the storied Red Sox-Yankees game, while 4.5 million tuned in for the Bills-Titans pre-season tilt from Canton, Ohio. Gambo is shocked by the numbers, but it came as no surprise to Ash who’s certain people are football-crazy. The guys discussed how this will benefit the NFC Champion Cardinals who are getting plenty of national exposure including Thursday’s pre-season opener against the Steelers on ESPN. Ash thinks the enhanced stigma which now follows the Birds can go a long way towards marketing opportunities and even more revenue avenues in these tough economic times.
Waive(r) Him Goodbye?…It became public D-backs pitcher Doug Davis is on the waiver wire and can be had for a certain price. “Double D” pitched seven innings of two-run ball in the Snakes 7-4 win Monday night dropping his ERA to 3.62. G&A discussed if a mid-level prospect is worth dealing the free-agent-to-be Davis. John believes the club is still looking to win games this season and that may keep Davis in Sedona Red for the next month and a half. Mark knows he is a middle of the rotation starter who will eat innings and, for the most part, keep his team in the game.
