Cards make a statement

Here’s what went down Monday on G&A…

Statement Made…The Cards went to the northwest and pounded the Seahawks 27-3 Sunday behind a stingy defense and a big game from receivers Larry Fitzgerald and Steve Breaston. G&A were impressed how Ken Whisenhunt’s team took the rowdy Seahawks’ fans out of the game early with a quick 14-0 lead and then completely shut down Matt Hasselbeck and Seattle’s passing attack. Gambo knows it’s now a two-team race in the NFC West with the Seahawks all but done.

We were joined by Cards wide receiver Steve Breaston who caught seven passes for 77 yards and a 16-yard third quarter touchdown from Kurt Warner in yesterday’s 27-3 win over the Seahawks in Seattle. He also added 64 yards on three punt returns. Breaston said the Cards’ performance was by far their most complete effort of the year and the team is looking forward to a big challenge this weekend in New York against the Giants on Sunday Night Football.

Another Challenge…The Cards improved to 3-2 after Sunday’s win over Seattle and now the focus shifts to this weekend’s big showdown against the Giants in New York. Gambo knows the Cards have confidence they can win on the road (2-0 for the first time since 1991) and this week should be no different. Ash feels Ken Whisenhunt’s team matches up well against New York because the G-men (as proved by Drew Brees) have holes in their secondary while the Cards excel at stopping the run. They will certainly have their hands full with the Giants tandem of big, bad Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw.

No Cliff-Hanger…The Phillies pounded the Dodgers 11-0 Sunday night in Game 3 of the NLCS to take a 2-1 series lead. G&A were impressed with way Cliff Lee completely dominated LA’s lineup. Lee became the first post-season pitcher to throw at least 8 innings, not allowing a single run or walk, and registering double-digit strikeouts (Lee had 10 K’s). Joe Torre is now 2-6 against Philly manager Charlie Manuel in the post-season.

Just Forget it…The Cards won, but the run-game just doesn’t seem to be progressing. John has seen enough and made a pact not to bring it up again on the air. The Red Birds are who they are. They feature a great passing attack, but have struggled to run the ball for the better part of the year. Gambo thinks the Cards short, controlled passing game is the best way for them to simulate a running game. Ash isn’t sure if the Cards know how to use Beanie Wells and if Ken Whisenhunt has confidence in his pass protection skills.

Dave Burns in for Ash on Tuesday. We’ll be joined by UofA head football Mike Stoops at 1:40 and ESPN college football analyst Mark May at 4:25.

Season Ending Early?

Here’s what went down Friday on Gambo & Ash…

Texas/Oklahoma:
Has this game lost some of its luster because of Oklahoma’s two losses already this season? The 20th ranked Sooners take on the 3rd ranked Longhorns Saturday in what is widely known as the Red River Rivalry.

Heisman Among Us? Jordan Shipley, wide receiver for the Texas Longhorns, is having an impressive season, with 583 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns through his team’s first 5 games, not to mention an impressive two punt returns for TDs already. He’s a threat to score every time he touches the ball, which Gambo & Ash both think gives him an edge in the Heisman voting. If he were to win the award, he’d be the first WR to win it since Charles Woodson (Michigan) in 1997. With no other impressive candidates to this point, the guys think Shipley might be the frontrunner.

Did Joe Torre Overmanage in Game 1? Clayton Kershaw had a very good sophomore campaign as a young 21-year old, compiling an 8-8 record with a 2.79 ERA and more Ks (185) than innings pitched (171). However, in Game 1 of the NLCS, Kershaw looked every bit his age, giving up 5 walks and 5 earned runs before leaving in the 5th inning. Joe Torre stands by his decision to leave Kershaw in the game, even as things began to unravel.

We’ll Never Forget: One group of people who will never forget Nick Adenhart’s unfortunate death early this season is the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The team recently voted to give the former pitcher’s family a full share of the playoff winnings. Torii Hunter and other Angels players have expressed immense sympathy for those Adenhart left behind, and Hunter even hinted that Adenhart’s death has brought the team closer.

Season Ending Early? The Cards look to essentially eliminate the Seahawks from the NFC West picture with a victory on Sunday. With a loss already to San Francisco, a 2nd loss within the division could mean disaster for either of these rivals. While both offenses have shown shades of greatness this season, Gambo & Ash think one of the big difference makers in Sunday’s game could be Aaron Curry. The Seahawks’ linebacker has 29 tackles and 2 sacks through 5 games, and will look to be disruptive of the Cardinals’ rhythm passing game.

USC/Notre Dame:
Despite getting blown out three straight years against the Trojans, some are giving the Fighting Irish a fighting chance this time around. Gambo and Ash think this is a big game for Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen (who was heavily recruited by Pete Carroll and USC) and for Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis, who could be on his way out of South Bend despite having a contract through 2015.

Our world renowned sports handicapper BRANDON LANG joined us to handicap a big weekend of college and NFL action. Brandon likes the Texans plus 5, the Steelers minus 14, the Huskies minus 6 ½ against ASU, and U of A minus 3 against Stanford.

We caught up with our ESPN NFL analyst MARK SCHLERETH, who shared his thoughts on the Cards-Seahawks game, the surprising Denver Broncos, the Saints hosting the Giants, and the Vikings entertaining the Ravens.

Cinderella Survives

Here’s what went down Thursday on Gambo & Ash…

Cinderella Survives…Boise State is still unbeaten:  barely.  The Broncos held off Tulsa 28-21 withstanding a late rally which ended with a defensive stand in the final minute.  Ash doesn’t feel BSU has any business being considered a National Championship contender after two-loss Oklahoma beat this same Tulsa team 41-0 earlier this year in Norman.  Mark does feel Chris Peterson’s team is talented enough to play in a BCS game, just not for the national title.  Gambo is taking a wait-and-see approach with Boise.  He doesn’t feel style points are needed, but running the table is.

Seahawks starting tight end JOHN CARLSON previewed their game Sunday against the Cards at Qwest Field.  The former Notre Dame star is third on the team in catches (22) and yards (239).  He said Seattle will continue to play their up-tempo, fast-break offense which helped them roll up 41 points last week against Jacksonville.  Carlson also said he will be keeping a close eye on the USC-Notre Dame Saturday in South Bend.

Mike Vick’s Latest Audible…Philly quarterback Michael Vick passed on an opportunity to visit a large group of dogs he once fought with this weekend in Oakland when the Eagles visit the Raiders.  G&A feel, by no means, should Vick visit these eight dogs.  Mark wants to see more of Vick on the field and less of him off it.  Gambo knows there’s no advantage to him visiting and thinks, if anything, it will hurt his reputation more than anything.  Mark knows people eat up the bad news and sometimes brush off the good, because that’s just way our society works.

The Best & Worst of Times…the Cardinals defense has rode the rollercoaster this season when it comes to defending the run and pass.  The Cards are best in the NFL against the run and dead last against the pass.  Gambo sees the biggest reason is the Cards frequently get pressure on the quarterback, but can’t get to the quarterback in terms of sacks, which ultimately exposes their secondary.

We caught up with former San Francisco Giants outfielder, now Reno Aces manager, BRETT BUTLER.  Butler discussed the 20th Anniversary of the Earthquake Series which is this Saturday and shared his thoughts on the NL & ALCS which start Thursday afternoon in Los Angeles.  Butler said the most difficult part of the whole Earthquake Series experience was contacting his family because that was long before cell phones were so prevalent.

Let the Games Begin…the Dodgers and Phillies are getting set to start the NLCS in Los Angeles.  The guys gave their keys to the series.  Ash is still sticking with the Dodgers in seven, while John still likes the Phillies to get back to the Fall Classic because of their balanced lineup and solid starting pitching.

We were joined by Cardinals defensive coordinator BILL DAVIS who discussed the Red Birds late 4th-quarter defensive stand against Houston last weekend and how he plans to defend Matt Hasselbeck’s hurry-up offense Sunday in Seattle.  Davis says the key to his defense is putting together four solid quarters of play per game.

Friday we’re LIVE in Dallas for the Texas-Oklahoma Red River Rivalry and we’ll be joined by ESPN NFL analyst Mark Schlereth at 5:25.

Third best in the West?

Here’s what went down Wednesday on G&A…

Third Best?…Steve Kerr told Doug & Wolf Wednesday morning he feels, behind the Lakers and Spurs, the west is wide open and that includes the Suns who could finish as high as third in the Western Conference. G&A certainly aren’t as optimistic as Kerr with up-and-coming teams like the Blazer, Nuggets, and Hornets. Both know another team to keep your eye on is Dallas with their new-look front-court that includes Shawn Marion and Drew Gooden.

Center Shopping…The Suns, with center Robin Lopez sidelined for another several weeks, are in the mix to add another big man before the regular season starts later this month. Gambo reported two players to keep your eye on are Jared Collins who could be released by Utah and veteran big man Melvin Ely. Ash would prefer former Sun Jake Voskuhl who will likely get cut by the Mavs and fits the teams’ up-tempo style better than the slow-footed Collins and injury-prone Ely.

Railroaded…Rush Limbaugh will not be allowed to place a bid to purchase the St. Louis Rams. Dave Checketts, a point man in the Limbaugh group, made the announcement on Wednesday. Gambo thinks this is a joke and feels Limbaugh shouldn’t be held accountable for his comments regarding “black quarterback” Donovan McNabb made back in 2003. John wonders why it’s OK for Roger Goodell to bring back Michael Vick, Leonard Little, and other criminals, but not Limbaugh.

Priced Out…Reports say families who make under $75,000 can no longer afford to take their families to professional sporting events. Baseball is down 6.5 percent across the board with the D-backs down 15 percent in Gambo paid $650 to take his family to see a game at the old Yankee Stadium as a “one-time experience” for him and his family. Ash says, with a little creativity, you can take a family to a sporting event, but don’t expect to sit in a suite or on the 50-yard line. He equated it to buying steak. Sure, you can get a $10 steak at Denny’s, but it won’t taste nearly as good as a prime cut from a steakhouse. That being said, a Denny’s steak is still a steak. Gambo feels the value in sports for families is baseball because there are so many games, the ticket prices aren’t nearly as steep as the NFL or a marquee college football game.

We caught up with Arizona State Director of Athletics Lisa Love who previewed the Devils showdown with Washington Saturday night in Tempe, look ahead to tomorrow’s ASU basketball media day, and everything else making headlines in Tempe.

Running From Your Problems…Ken Whisenhunt spent the bye week preaching about improving the run game. That dream was short-lived Sunday when the Red Birds abandoned the run after struggling against the struggling Texans. G&A are wondering if the Cards “are who they are” (a pass-happy team) and that’s just the way it is. Gambo believes they have to run the ball a little, but by no means need to be a dominant run team to be successful.

Hurry Up…The Cards will face several challenges this week in hostile Seattle, but one they haven’t seen yet is Matt Hasselbeck’s new hurry-up offense which has been lighting up the scoreboard in recent weeks including Sunday’s 41-0 blowout win over Jacksonville. Gambo feels the Birds best bet may be ball-control which, judging from the Cards run game this season, may be tough to accomplish.

ESPN baseball insider Tim Kurkjian broke down the AL & NLCS which start tomorrow in LA with the Dodgers hosting the Phillies. The Yankees-Angels start their series Friday afternoon in Anaheim.

Final Four…The NLCS starts tomorrow and ALCS is set for Friday. The guys broke down both series and shared their thoughts on the matchups. Ash knows, on paper, the Yankees are clearly the best team left playing. That being said, the best team on paper doesn’t always equate to a World Series Championship. Gambo feels the Yankees will prevail in a close series, but knows going to a three-man rotation is risky. If the Angels advance, John knows the Yankees should have made a run at Roy Halladay before the trade deadline to further bolster their rotation.

Final Four…The Dodgers open their series with the Phillies Thursday at Dodger Stadium. Ash is hoping LA advances because he’d love to see Joe Torre and Don Mattingly return to Yankee Stadium in Dodger Blue. John will take the Fightin’ Phils because Game 1 starter Clayton Kershaw is 0-2 this season against Philly.

Wildkitten…The Dolphins are running the wildcat to perfection as they showed on Ronnie Brown’s game-winning touchdown against the Jets on MNF. One of the biggest splashes this off-season was the Eagles signing Michael Vick specifically to run the wildcat. Through the first part of the season, Vick has run the wildcat nine times for just 29 yards this season. He has been a complete non-factor in Andy Reid’s offense. The guys wonder if Tony Dungy (Vick’s mentor) may have second thoughts about telling Vick to steer clear from the Raiders who have had endless issues over overweight and underperforming JaMarcus Russell.

Scrimmage…New York Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce stomped on the Raiders’ grave saying, “We’re playing that game the other day and, honestly, it felt like a scrimmage, like a practice. It felt like we were going against our offense as far as the tempo.” Ouch. The guys concur the problem with Raider Nation starts at the top with Al Davis and trickles down to Tom Cable who is in hot water of his own after assaulting a former assistant in training camp back in August.

First-year Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian discussed his club’s 3-3 start which includes wins over conference power USC and UofA last Saturday in Seattle. He talked about why he took the job in Seattle and how impressed he’s been with the Sun Devil defense. The Huskies face ASU Saturday night at Sun Devil Stadium.

Thursday we’ll be joined by Cards defensive coordinator Bill Davis at 4:10 and “The Snake” Kenny Stabler.

“It Was Inappropriate”

Here’s what went down Tuesday on Gambo & Ash…

No October Relief…Rockies’ closer Huston Street blew a 2-run ninth inning lead Monday as the Phillies came back to eliminate the Rockies at Coors Field. Gambo sees a common theme among post-season teams who are no longer playing: poor closers. Whether it be Joe Nathan with the Twins, Fernando Rodney in Detroit, Ryan Pappelbon in Boston, or Ryan Franklin in St. Louis-all three, along with Street, struggled this post-season. Ash feels this makes you appreciate the greatness future HOFer Trevor Hoffman and the ultimate fireman, Mariano Rivera.

Volatile Investment…Closers are expensive, but vital when it comes to slamming the door in the post-season. Just two years ago, Josh Byrnes dealt Jose Valverde to the Astros for cost concerns knowing Papa Grande’s big payday was coming. Now Houston is considering trading him for the exact same reason. John thinks the best closers have short memories. Rivera gave up the World Series-winning hit to Luis Gonzales in the 2001 Fall Classic. Since then, he’s been the best closer in baseball, hands down.

Help from Heaven?…The Angels are playing at a high level as they prepare for their ALCS showdown with the mighty Yankees. Ash has a feeling this could be a special post-season for Mike Scioscia’s team. Since starter Nick Adenhart was killed in a car accident back in the April, the Halos have quietly played great baseball all summer which has overlapped into October. Gambo knows Anaheim will give the Yankees fits because of their explosive lineup and quality pitching. It was announced earlier Tuesday that New York is going to a three-man rotation in the ALCS. Ash likes New York in seven.

Wildcat Crazy…The Dolphins shredded Rex Ryan’s defense Monday as Miami came back to beat the Jets 31-27 in another MNF classic. Ash is still perplexed how the “wildcat” offense effectively moves the ball week after week. Both know the Dolphins may have found their answer at quarterback in second-year pro Chad Henne who completed 20-26 for 241 yards and two touchdowns. Most importantly, Henne didn’t turn the ball over against what has been a very opportunistic Ryan-led defense in New York. G&A were impressed with the play of new Jet Braylon Edwards.

“It Was Inappropriate”…49ers cornerback Dre Bly went from hero to goat Sunday after picking off a Matt Ryan pass and while showboating on the return, Falcon receiver Roddy White forced a fumble which Atlanta eventually recovered. Bly brushed off the mental error after the game, but has since apologized to coach Mike Singletary, the fans, and the 49ers organization. The Niners were behind 35-10 at the time of the interception. Gambo can’t stand the “look at me” athlete. Cards’ corner Dominique Rogers-Cromartie high-stepped down the sideline during his pick-six Sunday against the Texans. After the game, Ken Whisenhunt said he was going to talk to DRC about his antics. Ash doesn’t feel the second-year cornerback shouldn’t be showing anyone up-especially after being picked apart by Peyton Manning just two weeks earlier when the Colts blew out the Cards in Glendale. DRC was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week Tuesday afternoon.

We were joined by Diamondbacks general manager Josh Byrnes who shared his thoughts on the playoffs, the health of Conor Jackson, and how he is approaching the off-season. Byrnes says the team will be keeping a close eye on first baseman Brandon Allen who is currently playing in the Arizona Fall League.

Enough Already…Junior Seau is back…again. G&A are annoyed. The Chargers brought back one of most popular players in franchise history, signing #55 to a one-day contract before sending him off into the San Diego sunset before he returned with the Pats for the final four games last season. Wednesday, the 12-time Pro-Bowler agreed to terms with New England. The story was first reported by Versus where Seau has a reality show which is set to debut in early December.

It’s Great to be a Florida Gator!…Tim Tebow and Florida went into “The Swamp” and beat LSU under the lights. Earlier in the day, Nick Saban’s Alabama squad completely shut down Jevan Snead and overrated Ole Miss. The guys concur these two teams are on a crash-course to meet in the SEC Championship Game in early December. Gambo likes Florida. Ash will take the Crimson Tide. Both marvel at the physical style of play and team speed in the SEC.

We were joined ESPN college football analyst Mark May who discussed Tim Tebow’s gutsy performance Saturday against LSU, Alabama’s beatdown of Ole Miss, plus previewed Saturday’s Red River Shootout in Dallas, Notre Dame hosting USC, and ”MayDay’s” thoughts on if Dez Bryant will ever play another down for Oklahoma State.

After Further Review…The officials are under the microscope again after a week filled with controversy. Whether it was Georgia’s A.J. Green touchdown celebration which led to a penalty and short field for LSU’s game-winning drive two weeks ago or Joe Mauer’s mis-called double that was called foul in Game 3 Sunday against the Yankees-the mistakes are everywhere. UofA fans were none too happy Nic Foles’ late game pick-six wasn’t overturned Saturday night in Seattle when it appeared the ball hit the ground before Huskies’ linebacker Mason Foster sprinted down the sideline for the winning touchdown. The Pac-10 released a statement today saying Foles’ pass proved inconclusive on replay. UW re-play officials only had four camera angles. All NFL stadiums have over 20 cameras following the action. The guys know these mistakes aren’t just a coincidence. Gambo says make the refs and officials more accountable, like athletes do when they address the media after blowing a game. Mark says add more cameras.

Not There Yet

Here’s what went down Monday on G&A…

Not There Yet…the Cards got a much-needed win Sunday, outlasting the Texans 28-21 in Glendale.  G&A know the bottom line in the NFL is winning or losing, but know there’s plenty of work to be done for this team to return to its late-2008 form.  Gambo knows the Cards still have a lot of work to do, but that’s ok…because it’s October.  Mark knows Ken Whisenhunt’s team averted disaster and beat a team they were expected to, which could prove big in the wacky NFC West that saw the 1st-place 49ers get blown out by Atlanta and Seattle shutout Jacksonville.

We were joined by Cardinals starting defensive end CALAIS CAMPBELL, who blocked a field goal, had a tackle for loss, and made a touchdown-saving stop on a long punt return by the Texans’ Jacoby Jones in the third quarter as the Cards held off Houston 28-21.  He said he still has plenty of work to do to become the player he hopes to be, but is excited for the starting opportunity that was presented when Antonio Smith signed a free-agent deal with the Texans this past off-season.

Goal Line Stand
…the Cards defense stepped up when they needed it most Sunday afternoon.  With just seconds left, Gabe Watson blew up the center and Ali Highsmith nailed Houston running back Chris Brown just inches from the goal line to preserve the win.  Ash pointed out D-coordinator Bill Davis’ defense has shut down some of the best running backs in the league this season, including Frank Gore, Maurice Jones-Drew and Steve Slaton.  Gambo knows when the defense is focused they have enough talent to be one of the best in the league.  Both blame the offense for a lot of the second-half short-comings, specifically the lack of a run game and inability to piece together long, clock-sustaining drives.

Lacking Killer Instinct
…elite teams in the NFL don’t let the Texans do what they did to the Cardinals Sunday afternoon.  Down 21-0 at half, Houston mounted a furious second-half comeback and almost embarrassed the Cardinals on their home field.  Gambo knows the NFL’s best (Colts, Giants, Vikings) would never allow an average team like the Texans to put themselves in position to steal a road win.  Ash knows a lot of these problems stem from a woeful run game that didn’t improve at all against one of the weaker run defenses in the league.  Both know the Red Birds won’t be so lucky in future weeks as the competition stiffens.

NFC (Wild) West
…on the same day the Cards got a hard-earned win over Houston, the 49ers and Seahawks switched roles in the NFC West.  San Fran, who had impressed early this season, got smoked by the visiting Falcons, while the Seahawks shut out Jacksonville 41-0 in Seattle.  The guys know there are still plenty of games left, but the NFC West is much improved over a year ago, especially with a healthy Matt Hasselbeck in the Pacific Northwest.

More Impressive?
…two interesting storylines early in the NFL season are the upstart Broncos and Bengals.  Young Josh McDaniels has Denver at 5-0, and many feel he is the front-runner for coach of the year.  Meanwhile, the Bengals improved to 4-1 and should be 5-0 except for Brandon Stokley’s tipped pass last-second catch and run in Week 1.  Ash is taking a wait-and-see approach with the Broncos, especially with upcoming games against the Chargers, Ravens and Broncos.  John knows Cincinnati isn’t in the class of AFC-elite, but Sunday’s win in Baltimore could go a long way in boosting their confidence the rest of the season.

Tuesday we’ll be joined by ESPN college football analyst Mark May at 4:25 and D-backs General Manager Josh Byrnes at 3:00.

Fitz gets dissed?

Here’s what went down Friday on Gambo & Ash…

Fitz gets dissed? While many think that Larry Fitzgerald is the best receiver in football, fellow NFL wideout Andre Johnson of the Houston Texans says that he’s got Fitz beat. The Cards host the Texans on Sunday night at sold-out University of Phoenix Stadium, so we may find out soon enough.

Same ol’ Dockett: Darnell Dockett says he’s playing for himself, the coaches and his teammates, but not the organization. It looks like the Cards’ star defensive tackle won’t make it even half of a season without complaining about his contract, after all. Gambo and Ash agree that the only person Dockett should be upset with is his agent, who told him to sign his 2007 deal.

Oops! Perennial All-Star Matt Holliday blows a late-inning opportunity for the St. Louis Cardinals after losing sight of a line drive and letting the ball hit him in the… “stomache.” After nearly blowing the NL West lead and looking terrible late in the season, the once-forgotten Dodgers are one win away from the NLCS.

Too Much, Too Soon? Why did Charlie Manuel over-manage yesterday against the Rockies in Game 2? Playing to win is one thing, but using three starters in one game has forced Manuel to use late-season addition Pedro Martinez in Game 3 in Colorado.

Former Diamondback outfielder and good friend of the show LUIS GONZALEZ joined us to share his thoughts on the playoffs and what he expects to see in the NL & ALDS this weekend. Gonzo says that, despite Ryan Franklin’s great season as the St. Louis Cardinals’ closer, he thinks the mental edge that John Smoltz brings warrants having Smoltz as the Cardinals’ postseason closer. Gonzo thinks this might have something to do with Charlie Manuel’s decision to have Pedro Martinez throw for the Phillies in game 3 of their series against the Rockies.

Your Reputation Precedes You: Rush Limbaugh has made a living making controversial comments, and one comment in particular may have some consequences on his future. The outspoken conservative has expressed interest in purchasing the St. Louis Rams, and a few NFL players have responded by saying that they would not play for a team owned by Limbaugh, primarily due to supposed racist comments made by Limbaugh about quarterback Donovan McNabb in 2003. Gambo and Ash think that if the sale goes through, the Rams wouldn’t have any trouble acquiring talented players, despite these recent comments.

World renowned sports handicapper BRANDON LANG checked in for his weekly segment to break down all the marquee college and NFL games this weekend. He likes Indianapolis big over Tennessee, Michigan plus 8 versus Iowa, the Seahawks plus 4 ½ against Jacksonville, Cleveland plus 6 against the Bills, and the Mercury minus 5 tonight in Game 5 of the WNBA Finals.

ESPN NFL analyst MARK SCHLERETH joined us to share his thoughts on Brett Favre’s big win over the Packers Monday night, PREVIEW the Texans-Cards game Sunday, discuss the health of Eli Manning, and how Michael Crabtree will help the 49ers for the remainder of the season.

Still Hope

Here’s what went down Thursday on G&A…

Still Hope…the Cardinals announced Thursday the NFL granted the team a 24-hour extension in hopes of selling the final 1,000 available tickets and lifting the blackout for Sunday’s game against the Texans.  The Cards have sold out the University of Phoenix Stadium 36-straight times.  G&A are certain the game will sellout (with just under 1,000 tickets) and keep the streak alive.

We caught up with Houston Astros third baseman AARON BOONE who is doing the color commentary for ESPN Radio for the Cardinals-Dodgers NLDS.  He shared his thoughts on the playoffs, his playing career, and recovering from open-heart surgery to replace a bicuspid aortic valve back in March.

Must Win?…the Cards are preparing for Sunday’s game against the Texans.  G&A concur the Texans are a decent, but certainly not excellent team and another home loss could prove disastrous with the 49ers playing so well under Mike Singletary.  John thinks the Cards need to run the ball to have success so the Texans (weak against the run) are visiting at a perfect time.  Ash knows this is a big game for the Cards and a 1-3 start could doom the Birds’ chances for another postseason run.

Lost Power…the Cardinals are having trouble moving the ball and their overall offensive numbers are down across the board in 2009.  Gambo feels the most glaring discrepancy is scoring offense where Ken Whisenhunt’s team is currently 20th in the NFL in points per game.  He also looks at Larry Fitzgerald’s yards per reception-which is down nearly five yards from 2008 to just over 10 per reception.  Mark knows the Birds must balance their pass/run plays even though he knows the passing game is the club’s bread-and-butter.

Mutual Respect…the Mercury are one win away from bringing Phoenix another WNBA title.  There is no arguing the WNBA is a fringe sport, but only to the sports fans, not the athletes themselves.  Larry Fitzgerald was spotted at a Mercury game last week, while Peyton Manning was hanging out at the Mercury-Fever game Wednesday night in Indianapolis.  Ash knows male athletes support female athletes, whether it’s Herb Sendek’s team attending an ASU women’s game or the Suns trio of captains (Amare, Nash, Grant Hill) buying the entire upper deck for the Merc’s deciding Game 5 Friday at U.S. Airways Center.

Former Cardinals defensive end, now Houston Texan, ANTONIO SMITH discussed his first year playing for Gary Kubiak and what he expects to see from his former team this weekend at the University of Phoenix Stadium.  He talked about playing with talented wide receiver Andre Johnson and said he has a special celebration dance for former teammate Darnell Dockett this weekend.

Run to Glory…the Cards need some balance in their offensive scheme.  The Cards have not been able to run the ball and thus, teams are keying on stopping Kurt Warner and the Birds’ vertical passing game.  Ash knows now is the time to try to run, but if the Cards couldn’t run the ball on Indy (also poor against the run), what makes us think Sunday will be any different?  Gambo would love to see fumble-prone rookie Beanie Wells get more carries because he’s a “homerun hitter” with game-changing speed in the open field.  With Mario Williams nursing a bad shoulder (he didn’t practice Thursday), both feel a breakout game for Warner and crew could happen this weekend.

We were joined by Cards head coach KEN WHISENHUNT who discussed the focus of his team this week coming off the bye and what he expects to see from the Houston Texans Sunday afternoon in Glendale.  He is hoping for more balance offensively, but knows the problem won’t be solved overnight.  Look for Beanie Wells to get plenty of touches against Houston.

Beanie Time…Ken Whisenhunt told Gambo & Ash Thursday that he expects to give Beanie Wells more carries on Sunday.  G&A love the idea because he gives the Cards a bigger, stronger option to Tim Hightower.  The guys aren’t sure Whiz totally trusts Wells after his two-fumble game against Jacksonville, but knows he may be the best option to help the club’s struggling rushing attack thru the first three games.

Friday we’ll be joined by ESPN NFL analyst Mark Schlereth at 5:25 and sports handicapper Brandon Lang at 4:25

Metrodome Magic

Here’s what went down Wednesday on G&A…

Metrodome Magic…the Twins beat the Tigers Tuesday in 12 innings to win the “play-in” game and now face the Yankees in the ALDS.  G&A reflected back on where it all went wrong for Jim Leyland’s team.  Detroit became the first team in baseball history to blow a three-game lead with four to play.  G&A think there’s plenty of blame - from Curtis Granderson getting doubled up in the late innings to Brian Raburn misplaying a single into a triple which eventually scored to tie the game.  Ash is happy the Twins, who finished the season on a 17-4 streak, have an opportunity to take on the heavily-favored Bronx Bombers.  Gambo is certain the Yankees are better in every facet of the game, but is curious to see how C.C. Sabathia, who has struggled in the post-season, performs under the bright lights at Yankee Stadium.

Who’s Watching?…the Cards may be making history this weekend at the University of Phoenix Stadium…for all the wrong reasons.  The Red Birds are 1,500 tickets short of another sellout which would lift the blackout for Valley Cards fans and allow them to watch Sunday’s game against the Texans from the comfort of their own sofa.  G&A are concerned this game might not sell out because the Texans bring little “sex appeal” like the Packers, Vikings or Colts.  Ash feels if the available tickets hovers around 1,000, CBS Channel 5 may buy the remainder of the seats to ensure a local telecast.  He also wouldn’t mind seeing a player step up and purchase the seats to donate to charity.  Gambo wonders if the Cards continue to struggle, that number may climb to 3,000 or 4,000 later this season.

Jetsetter…the Browns have seen enough of Braylon Edwards, who was dealt to the Jets Wednesday for two players and two future draft picks.  The former Michigan star has been plagued by poor focus on the field the past couple years - specifically his inability to catch the ball consistently.  G&A like the trade for New York, especially since Edwards is in his free agent year.  If the Jets like him, they can re-sign him, if not they can let him walk this spring.  Ash knows Edwards likely wore out his welcome in Cleveland and a change of scenery, coupled with a bounce-back season, could make him big dollars this spring.

We were joined by Arizona State Director of Athletics LISA LOVE who discussed the Devils’ Pac-10 opening loss to Oregon State last weekend, Saturday’s matchup against Washington State in Pullman, and everything else making headlines in Tempe.

Cowboy Down…Oklahoma State star receiver Dez Bryant has been suspended by the NCAA for going to Deion Sanders’ house.  The most decorated wide receiver in college football may have played his final game for the Cowboys.  The NCAA read on Bryant’s Facebook page that he was hanging with Sanders.  Bryant then lied to the NCAA about the visits.  G&A feel, as long as Sanders isn’t working for an agent, there is nothing wrong with the two hanging out.  Okie State is currently in the Top 15 and a possible BCS Bowl qualifier.

Our ESPN baseball insider TIM KURKJIAN shared his thoughts on the Twins dramatic 12 inning, 6-5 win over the Tigers Tuesday, what he expects in the NL & AL Divisional series, and how the D-backs will go about picking up the pieces after their 70-92 finish this season.  Kurkjian likes the Yankees to beat the Cards in the World Series and feels Twins’ catcher Joe Mauer could go down as the greatest catcher in baseball history before the end of his career.

Sunrise…the Suns opened their exhibition season with a win over some team from Belgrade Tuesday at U.S. Airways Center.  The guys were happy to see Amare Stoudemire back on the floor and feel his health is absolutely vital to the club’s success this season.  Both view Alvin Gentry’s team as a seven or eight playoff seed in the loaded Western Conference.

Thursday we’ll be joined by Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt at 5:10 and former Cardinal, now Texans defensive end Antonio Smith.

Favre Fever

Here’s what went down Tuesday on G&A…

Favre Fever…Love him or hate him, Brett Favre has the Vikings off to a 4-0 start following Monday’s 30-23 win over the Packers in Minnesota. Although G&A feel the Vikings’ organization played favorites towards Favre this summer, both know Monday’s three-touchdown, no interception game was vintage Brett Favre. Gambo knows the Vikings $12 million Favre investment in the immediate future is paying dividends and could pave the way for a memorable season in Minnesota. Mark believes the Vikes have a good shot at a 6-0 start with the Rams this weekend and Ravens in the Metro Dome the week after.

Pack to the Future…Brett Favre out-played Aaron Rodgers who replaced the legend in Green Bay before last season. Favre has jump-started the Vikings, while Rodgers has had success running the Packers. G&A wonder if the Packers could do it all over, would they stick with Rodgers or re-think their decision to trade Favre to the Jets. Both agree it was time for the Pack to part ways with Favre who strung along his on-again, off-again retirement talk for years. The guys concur Rodgers is a solid, young quarterback surrounded with good skill players which should bode well for the Packers.

Quiet Dominance…Jared Allen’s amazing MNF performance was overshadowed by Favre Monday night in Minneapolis. The former Chiefs defensive end registered 4.5 sacks, including a safety. Ash is certain the Vikes don’t regret giving Kansas City a first and two-third round picks for the Pro-Bowler before the 2008 season. Gambo feels Allen, although a Pro-Bowler, still flies under the radar on a national level. Both know Allen’s presence in Green Bay’s backfield was equally important as Favre’s success thru the air Monday night.

Pass Happy…There is a new trend in the NFL and it’s called the forward pass. In the first four weeks of this season, the NFL set a league record for passing yards. More and more teams are looking to move the ball via the air thanks to usual suspects Peyton Manning, Drew Brees and our own Kurt Warner. Ash feels some run-oriented teams, like the Titans, have to go to the air because they are falling behind in games. That being said, Mark isn’t buying the theory that the running game is dead in the NFL today. Gambo feels teams aren’t as confident in their run games and are opting to pass on what should be run plays, especially near the goal line.

Back to School…Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, Jeff Green, and other NBA stars that entered the draft as underclassmen are going back to school. Why would these young, multi-millionaires go back for their degree? Studies show the average NBA salary is $5.85 million, but many experience financial hardship stemming from extreme shopping sprees and, at times, divorce. Ash feels this is a refreshing story, especially young stars like Durant who could set a precedence for future underclassmen who jump to the draft. Mark would like to see one broke former NBA star, Kenny Anderson, speak at the annual rookie symposium and explain how he lost a reported $66 million thru bad business decisions, a divorce fees, and child support.

We caught up with D-backs skipper A.J. Hinch who re-capped the Snakes’ long, disappointing season. Hinch shared what he learned during his partial rookie year on the bench and how the club will look to fill holes in the rotation and at second base heading into 2010.

We were joined by our college football analyst Mark May from ESPN. “MayDay” broke down ASU’s struggles at quarterback, USC’s beatdown of Cal, UTEP’s blowout win over previously unbeaten and possible BCS-buster Houston, and Jimmy Clausen’s chances of winning the Heisman Trophy.

Wednesday we’ll be joined by ESPN baseball insider Tim Kurkjian at 3:25.
