Here’s what went down Monday on G&A…
Bandwagon Jumpers…the Cards season started out with a thud, falling to the 49ers 20-16 Sunday in Glendale and it didn’t take long for the whispers to start. Ash, who attended the game, heard the three dirty words over and over, “Same old Cardinals.” Gambo was certain last week the Cards could beat 49ers, even if they didn’t play well. Those thoughts changed after what transpired Sunday at University of Phoenix Stadium.
Good Until the End…the Cards defense did everything they could to bail out Kurt Warner and the ineffective offense against San Fran, but couldn’t make the big play when they needed to as the 49ers scored the eventual game-winning 16-play touchdown drive in the closing minutes of the game. 14 of those were pass plays. The guys agree the defense, as whole, looked extremely impressive, especially the d-line with Darnell Dockett and Calais Campbell holding the Niners to 21 yards on 25 carries. The secondary was the one area that could use work. New cornerback Bryant McFadden was burned several times and even Pro-Bowler Adrian Wilson missed assignments in the loss. The guys feel the personal foul called against A-Dub on Vernon Davis was a terrible call.
Dislocated Season…the Cards aren’t the only ones with issues after Week 1. The Bears not only lost a division game Sunday in Green Bay, but also lost their best defensive player Brian Urlacher for the season with a dislocated wrist. The guys agree this is an extremely tough loss for a team in a pretty tough division with the Packers and the new-look Vikings. Both feel free-agent Derrick Brooks would be a good fit as Urlacher’s replacement.
More Beanie…starter Tim Hightower was extremely effective Sunday in the passing game, snagging a dozen balls for over 100 yards, but struggled on the ground averaging less than two yards per attempt. Rookie Beanie Wells ran hard and bounced back after going the wrong way on a play which resulted in a Kurt Warner sack. G&A agree it’s time for Whiz to get Wells more carries because he offers more in the run-game than the incumbent starter Hightower.
Men of Troy…and just like that, another star is born in Hollywood - maybe. Led by true freshman Matt Barkley, USC came back to beat Ohio State in Columbus. Gambo believes Barkley made some big plays late, but Joe McKnight saved Pete Carroll’s team when they needed it most. John knows this win should propel USC into the National Championship Game. Ash couldn’t disagree more. He knows Southern Cal is good for a let-down Pac-10 loss at some point this year.
“He’s Our Quarterback”…USC head coach Pete Carroll isn’t a great college coach by accident. G&A liked the way Carroll stuck with Barkley when the game was on the line in Columbus and after the game called the 19-year old “our quarterback.” The “hip” Carroll relates well to his players by putting himself in their environment. From faking pre-practice stunts, to inviting Snoop Dogg to watch the Trojans work out, he gets thru to his players which is important in this day and age of college sports.
A Force(ier) to be Reckon’ With…Michigan took a big step back towards national prominence with a dramatic comeback win over Notre Dame led by another true freshman, just not named Matt Barkley. Tait Forcier had a big 4th down touchdown run, then threw to Greg Matthews in the end zone with 11 seconds left. The guys agree a quality win over Notre Dame will help take the heat off Rich Rod, at least for now. Ash compares Forcier to a young Jake Plummer - who used his legs as well as his arm to find success as a young college quarterback.
Freshmen Initiation…Barkley and Forcier made headlines around the country leading their schools to big wins. The two true freshmen proved wise beyond their years engineering late-game touchdowns and wins over nationally ranked schools. G&A like both young signal-callers, but for different reasons. Barkley has the potential to one day play in the NFL, Forcier could be remembered as simply a great college quarterback.
Tuesday we’ll be joined by Dbacks skipper A.J. Hinch at 3:00 and ESPN college football analyst Mark May at 4:25
