Gaydos After Dark–Thursday, August 28, 2008

Barack Obama addresses the Democratic National Convention as we kick off tonight’s show and we’ll bring you his speech in its entirety.  At 8 o’clock, I’m happy to say, Obama delivers where his supporting speakers did not.  I’m wondering what you thought of it.  Did it make you more likely, or less likely, to cast your vote for Obama?

We’ll get your ideas—and of course, I’ll share mine—on this historic Democratic National Convention throughout the night!

Gaydos After Dark–Wednesday, August 27, 2008

Bill Clinton has spoken and he said what Hillary couldn’t bring herself to say—that he believes Barack Obama is the guy for the position of President. We’ll talk about that at 7 o’clock.

Vice Presidential nominee Joe Biden addresses the D.N.C. at 7:30, but why does he seem so bummed out about it? It’s like he was giving a eulogy. No wonder Obama came out, unannounced, to wake everyone up. We’ll talk about that after 8 o’clock.

Why are the Democrats 0 for 3 at their own convention anyway? I’ll give you my answer to that after the news at 8:30.

At 9 o’clock, I can’t believe Bill Clinton gave the very best performance so far at the Convention. And he’s the guy who would least like to see Obama win the White House.

We’ll take your phone calls throughout the night as well, because I’d love to know your take on all this. Especially if you’re a Democrat watching your party fall apart before your eyes.

It’s great to have Gaydos on the program!

Gaydos After Dark–Tuesday, August 26, 2008

Starting off tonight’s show, we’re awaiting Hillary Clinton’s speech at the Democratic National Convention. I’m wondering just how far she’ll go to convince the whole Democratic party—including people who are still stinging from Hillary’s defeat—to get behind Obama.

After 7:30, we can’t forget how past tensions between these two helps McCain’s bid for the White House.

Hillary speaks around 7:40, but I’m afraid there isn’t that much talk about Obama. She went on and on about her great supporters and how inspired she is by struggling American women and the experience she had when she and Bill were in the White House. Where in her speech was the big boost for Obama? If you’re an Obama supporter, you must feel really disrespected right now. We’ll bring you highlights from the speech and take your calls, starting with tonight’s second hour.

Coming up at 9:45, I’ll tell you what Barack Obama had to say to Hillary after the speech. He shot a call over to Bill Clinton as well and I’ll tell you about that before we wrap up at 10 o’clock.

Gaydos After Dark–Monday, August 25, 2008

Which nickname do you like better for the Obama/Biden ticket?

The D.N.C. is in full swing and Michelle Obama is live on stage at 7:30. She speaks to women and to the working class, with an overall theme of the U.S. as a nation united. She tells us why her husband is a great guy to be married to. However, I don’t know that she gave us specifics on why Obama will make the best leader.

After 8, we’ll think about how large a part the First Lady plays in presidential decisions. If Michelle Obama becomes First Lady, won’t she be the second most powerful person on Earth?

At 8:50, hey, did you see Obama having daddy time with his wife and kids after the big speech? Oh, who wouldn’t vote for the world’s best daddy?

Nine-year-old Jericho Scott gets booted from the pitcher’s mound for being too good. Come on, grownups! Let the kids toughen up already. We’ll talk about it at 9 o’clock.

Have you seen the Valley billboards asking you to “Imagine No Religion”? They were paid for by the Freedom From Religion Foundation. Is this any better than when people rub their brand of worship in your face? I’ll talk to organization c0-president Annie Laurie Gaylor after the news at 9:30.

Gaydos After Dark–Friday, August 22, 2008

Oh, we’re waiting with bated breath for the text message that will reveal to the world Obama’s V.P. nomination. We’re going into the weekend as we await the big announcement, so I’m thinking it’s—eh—not really going to be a big announcement. He’s sure to pick a big dud. We’ll speculate about who that dud will be at 7 o’clock.

At 7:30, Nebraska’s Safe Haven law makes it okay for parents to just get rid of their problem teens by dropping them off at the nearest hospital. That’s just insane. I wouldn’t want to be a kid there!

The Olympics are almost over and Gaydos After Dark sports guy Jon Bloom helps me to wrap up the Beijing Games at 8 o’clock. We’ll decide whether this summer’s Olympics were all they were cracked up to be.

At 8:20, we’re talking about Iraq with Major General Don Shepperd (Retired). The surge is working and the next step is setting the timetable for withdrawal.

“Gaydos on the News” is ten big stories in ten minutes and it’s happening at 8:30. Tonight, we’ll find out that we’re going to see more of Charles Barkley than we could ever really want to—and we’ll also hear about America’s next top he-she model.

At 9 o’clock, we’re still waiting for word on the person who will be Obama’s running mate. What we can tell you is who it won’t be and even who it might be. Come on, cell phone, ring. Ring.

Is your employer going to ask you to step on a scale and then charge more for your insurance if you’re too heavy? I’m not against it. I’ll tell you where that’s happening at 9:30.

Finally, at 9:50, we know who got the nod from Barack Obama. It’s Senator Joe Biden from Delaware. Well that’s one down. Senator McCain, your selection please?

Gaydos After Dark–Thursday, August 21, 2008

Apparently, John McCain can’t keep track of how many houses he owns. Show of hands: how many of you would like to have a problem like that? During our first hour, we’ll hear the response ad released by the Obama campaign. It suggests that McCain is not just a wealthy guy who’s out of touch with you and me; it also seems to point to his being too old for the presidency.

At 7:30, a Texas prisoner is scheduled to be executed tonight. He was part of a robbery that ended in murder, but he “only” drove the getaway car. Y’know what? He participated and somebody died. I say, go ahead and give him the goodnight needle. There’s a big twist to this story as well, so don’t miss it.

At 8 o’clock, you’ll be shocked to learn that a Valley music therapist has been arrested for molesting his autistic patients. Nothing makes me sicker than a case like this. We’ll hear from a concerned parent and also, unfortunately, from some idiot who’s defending this scumbag.

8:30 brings us to an illegal alien who lies comatose in a U.S. hospital. Now that the doctors have saved this guy’s life, the plan is to have him sent back to Mexico, but his family members are calling that an injustice. He should be sent back, but it should be done safely, so the guy is still alive when he gets home. He’s a human being, contrary to what caller JoAnn has to say at 8:50!

The fantastic Scarlett Johansson is in the Valley supporting Barack Obama’s campaign and we’ve been knocking ourselves out trying to get her on the show. At 9, we’ll at least talk to State Representative Kyrsten Sinema about tonight’s fund raiser. Maybe she can hook Gaydos up?

After the news at 9:30, I’ll update you on the Carol Anne Gotbaum case. Then, we’re going to talk about paddling kids in school. I’ll give you an idea of what I would have done if anyone had ever tried to paddle me.

Closing out the show, I’ve got news on Operation Scheduled Departure and on Ricky Martin’s blessed event. It’s great to have Gaydos on the program!

Gaydos After Dark–Wednesday, August 20, 2008

Fifteen-year-old Lawrence King (left) was fatally shot in his California classroom. He was gay and wore women’s clothing to school. His parents blame the school for its lack of a dress code. There’s also evidence that Lawrence had bullied the classmate (right) who shot him. It’s a strange story, in which the parties to blame aren’t entirely clear. We’ll try to make some sense of it at 7 o’clock.

Plus, at 7:40, Michele de LaFreniere calls in to give her take on it. You’ll recall that she was the center of a local conflict over which public bathroom the transgendered should use.

At 8 o’clock, could it be that Obama will make his V.P. selection a lot like President Bush did? Dick Cheney was very close to the Bush camp long before he was selected—and a similar figure in the Obama camp is Caroline Kennedy. Too bad she has none of the experience needed to lead the nation if she had to. For that matter, will Obama pick a man or woman? I think he’s given us some clues on that already.

After the news at 8:30, insomniacs, take heart—the Democratic National Convention is right around the corner. Gore’s going to be there, as well as John Kerry and Jimmy Carter. It could go either way, really. You could be lulled to sleep, or, you may find yourself stunned into wide-eyed amazement over the congregation of losers on the stage.

8:50 brings us to the story of a mom who rescued her six children from a mobile home fire. People are calling her a hero, but I have to disagree. This woman could have done much, much more.

Michael Phelps is going to be pictured on boxes of Frosted Flakes. At 9 o’clock, people are saying he’s a sellout—that he’s promoting something that’s bad for kids. Sure, sugary cereal isn’t health food, but it isn’t the worst thing he could be putting his image on. Plus, it’s high time we discarded the misconception that athletes are role models.

There are other complaints, too, when it comes to Phelps’ endorsements. A bunch of people are whining that female Olympians won’t get as much endorsement cash as the men. Well, at 9:20, there’s a reason for that. Women athletes are not as exciting to watch. Sorry, that’s just the way it is.

At 9:30, it’s “Gaydos on the News,” including new info in the Serial Shooter case; looks like there will be no change of venue there. We’ll also cover stories of Bigfoot and a big dope bust.

Before we wrap up tonight’s show, don’t miss the terrific story of a sweet little old lady who held a burglar at bay with her big scary gun. Go, Grandma!

Gaydos After Dark–Tuesday, August 19, 2008

At 7 o’clock, I’m stunned to find out about Christina Applegate’s double mastectomy. Doctors say she’s now cancer free, but the whole thing has brought back a bad memory for me.

The drinking age has been twenty-one for a long time, but college presidents are pulling for it to be lowered to eighteen. They say it’ll prevent binge drinking and I agree with them. For anyone over eighteen, it’ll take the sport right out of it. We’ll talk about it at 7:30.

Starting off our second hour, one poll shows that sixty percent of Americans have more faith in God than in medicine. Okay. Fine. Look to your higher power for help, but don’t count the doctors out, because that can end lives. There’s another side of this, too. Twenty percent of doctors—yes, doctors—believe God can intervene in a seemingly hopeless medical situation.

Soon, Barack Obama will tell the world the name of his V.P. pick. At 9 o’clock, we’ll talk about the short list and what the running mate will do for his campaign. We’re not leaving John McCain out of this discussion—we’ll talk about his V.P. choices at 9:20.

At 9:30, does Michael Phelps have to look so wimpy? I mean, with all of the medals around his neck, he looks like some skinny kid from American Bandstand, for cryin’ out loud.

Then, I’m crushed to find out that the latest evidence of Bigfoot is nothing but a great big fake. Oh well, maybe next time.

Before I log off, I’ve got to show you this raw footage of a kite surfer who tried to go up against Tropical Storm Fay. It’s not a good idea to mess with Mother Nature.

Gaydos After Dark–Monday, August 18, 2008

Tonight at 7, an ASU professor is taking photos of nude kids and calling it art. Oh, did I mention? The photographic subjects are her own children and the pictures include full frontal nudity. My carefully reasoned opinion, ladies and gentlemen, is that this is nothing short of child pornography.

Another child starves to death right under her parents’ noses. This newest tragedy comes to us from Philadelphia and the parents actually have the gall to sue the city. Isn’t that how it seems to work these days? Everybody wants to pass the blame along to someone else. We’ll talk about it at 7:30.

At 8, be sure and join us for more on the dumbest way I’ve heard of to deal with school violence. We’ll tell you more about the Texas school that’s arming its teachers and staff. There’s a better solution to their problem and I’m going to tell you just what that is.

McCain and Obama took part in a forum on faith over the weekend and guess who came off as the stronger defender against evil. It was Senator John McCain. At 8:40, think what you want about the later accusations of an unfair McCain advantage, but I think he just sounded more decisive.

After 9 o’clock, chaos breaks out when a couple rush their dog to the hospital. They lost their dog—a cop could lose his job—oh, it’s a crazy story; you’ve gotta hear it.

We have more on the ASU prof who’s using her own kids to crank out child porn. At 9:30, we’ll speak with Debra Ward of “Citizens Against the Exploitation of Children in the Name of Art.” They came out today to demonstrate their opposition to the teacher’s work; we’ll find out from Debra how it went and whether we’ve seen the end of this perverse display.

Gaydos After Dark–Friday, August 15, 2008

Police Sgt. Tom Lovejoy is not guilty. That’s the official verdict in the death of Lovejoy’s canine partner Bandit and we’ll discuss it at 7 o’clock tonight. Lovejoy and his wife Carolynn will join me to discuss the end of their family’s long ordeal in a Gaydos After Dark exclusive.

Here’s Becky Hammon, former WNBA star and all American girl, but your eyes do not deceive you. She is indeed decked out in the uniform of Russia’s Olympic contenders, a choice she made after Team U.S.A. turned her down. At 8 o’clock, the U.S. coach is calling her a traitor and Hammon isn’t taking it lying down. We’ll take some calls and find if you think this player is out of line.

At 8:50, a school system is arming its teachers. I bet you can’t guess where this is happening! Oh, wait, you guessed it right away: it’s Texas.

How many of you would want parents and small children sit in a separate area of the plane? One poll is showing that a lot of travelers would be for it. At 9 I’ll tell you all about the cry room in the sky.

After 9:30, I know you’ll to listen again and think of what the Lovejoy family has been through, as we bring you the highlights from our earlier exclusive interview with the officer and his wife.
