Remember that scene in “Raiders of the Lost Ark?”
Indiana Jones is about to go after the Nazis who have just loaded the Ark onto a heavily armed truck. Somebody asks him how he’s going to get it back, and he responds with maybe the best line in the movie.
“I don’t know, I’m making this up as I go.”
That was the scene that played out in my head when I heard about the D-backs getting Adam Dunn.
They got their big bat. They responded to the Dodgers acquisition of Manny, point, counter-point. They sent a strong message to the fan base - we are going for it right now. They had a real clear idea of what needed to be done and they went and did it.
Which is all well and good, but in trying to figure out exactly how it’s going to work, that line pops into my head.
“I don’t know, I’m making this up as I go.”
I spent three hours yesterday going over every possible defensive alignment with Dunn on the field for the D-backs, and not one stinkin’ possibility is better than what they have now. He’s an awful defensive player. And this notion of moving Reynolds to second, Tracy to third and Jackson back to first? With Dunn and Upton as your corner outfielders? Women and children first.
Plus they have so many guys who strike out now (three of the top five in the NL in strikeouts), he’s another all-or-nothing kind of player.
He is an upgrade offensively, no doubt. And this team needed a boost offensively. But anybody who has watched this team this year knows the defense has been a major contributor to their inconsistent play.
Here’s hoping Dunn can hit enough to mask his defensive flaws, and the teams as well for that matter.
