What the names of Bowls should be

First, we start with a poll question. For some a very tough poll question.

Based on they are playing right now, who has a better chance of advancing past the 2nd round?

The titles of Bowl games have completely lost their meaning. Corporate sponsors have ruined any hope of us remembering specific Bowls, other than the really big ones. So, we came up with some names to help us remember who is playing where this college post-season.

Well…..just about anything has to be better than Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl

Relevant again, just like that

It’s like the Suns were just hooked up to an I-V bag of relevance.  They have it again.  Just like that, they matter.

The stale, stagnant air surrounding this team has just been blown out an open door.  The same door that Boris Diaw and Raja Bell were just pushed out of.

I love the deal.  In fact I can only think of one thing I don’t like about it; too many guys who will want the ball, demand touches and feel slighted if they don’t fill their quota.  Just last night Shaq was talking about how he hasn’t received his fair share of them.

But other than that….love it.  Diaw’s awful contract?  Gone.  Bell’s vocal discontent in this new system?  Gone.  Richardson’s youth and scoring ability?  He’s here, at a decent price (2 years 28 Million after this season).

Terry Porter and Steve Kerr just put their stamp on this team, by trading two of Mike D’Antoni’s favorite players to Charlotte.

It won’t have the same effect among the casual fans that the Shaq trade had in February but make no mistake.  The Suns have relevance flowing through their veins again.  And they’re a better basketball team to boot.

Would you miss the Coyotes? Rattlers?

This is probably going to sound terrible, but, if the Coyotes go bankrupt and have to leave, I won’t miss them.   If the Arena Football League has to suspend their 2009 season while they sort through their finances, it’s okay.  I’ll live.

I’m not openly rooting for people to lose their jobs.  I know many whose careers are tied to those two organizations.  I wish them no ill feelings.   But it’s a supply/demand world we live in.  When was the last time you just couldn’t wait to watch the Coyotes game that night?  Or you had a pair of great tickets to the Rattlers game?

I’m not telling you anything you haven’t already experienced first hand.  The times stink right now.  I mean my gosh, the NFL, the most dominant entity in all of sports had to layoff 10% of its headquarters staff.    It’s going to be hard for all the teams, all the leagues.  I don’t own season tickets to any of the sports here in town, but if I did, I would have serious reservations about renewing right now.

When times get tough people prioritize.  For the first time in years, the Burns family is operating on a budget.   And the first thing you do is separate your wants from your needs.  Do I really need the cleaning lady?  That membership at the really fancy gym?

That’s what we’re doing here, as a sports city.  Does Phoenix really need an NHL team?  Is the pride of living in a four-major-pro-sport town a defining part of your self-esteem?  Do you really follow the Rattlers?  I’m guessing you can do without them too.

Right now, the valley sports scene is a busy intersection that’s home to eight different Italian restaurants.    Too many choices and simply not enough demand.    Would you really be surprised if a couple of them didn’t make it?

I don’t want anything to happen to the Coyotes and the Rattlers.  I hope they can find an audience in this town that will support them.

But it’s hard to get emotional when the T.V. show I never watched anyway gets canceled.

Cards have been there before

Sunday marked a series of firsts for the Arizona Cardinals. First playoff appearance since 1998. First division title in 33 years. First home playoff game since 1947! In any case, Burnsy would like to see a series of something else: winning seasons. Sure, with the NFC West down and the many up-and-coming young players on their roster, it would seem that the Cards are built for this. Then again, this isn’t the first time the Cards have been primed for long-term success on the field. Remember the roster in 1998:

QB – Jake Plummer, age 24, prime of his career-

AFTER: 4 more disappointing seasons in AZ (18-39) departs for Denver in 2003. Plays 4 seasons there (3 playoff appearances, 39-15 record as starter)

RB- Adrian Murrell, age 28, becomes 1st Cards running back to rush for 1,000 yards since Garrison Hearst in 1995.

AFTER: rushes for a total of 710 yards in 3 more years in the NFL

FB- Larry Centers, age 30, catches 69 passes for the Cardinals

AFTER: Larry Centers, age 31, catches 69 passes for the Washington Redskins the following season

WR-Frank Sanders, age 26, leads the Cards in receiving yards with 1,145

AFTER: never records a 1,000 yard season in 6 more NFL seasons

DE-Simeon Rice, age 24, records 10 sacks for AZ

AFTER: records 70 NFL sacks with Tampa Bay after leaving AZ in 2001

DT-Mark Smith, age 24, records 9 sacks for AZ

AFTER: records a total 5 more in 4 more NFL seasons; leaves AZ for Cle in 2000

CB- Aeneas Williams, age 30, enjoys Pro Bowl season for AZ

AFTER: enjoys 2 more Pro Bowl seasons in St. Louis after leaving AZ in 2001

OLB- Jamir Miller, age 25, has career high 82 tackles

AFTER: leaves for Cleveland the following season, where he plays 3 more years, averaging 80 tackles per year

LT- Lomas Brown, age 35, stabilizing force on young offensive line, and stable protector of Plummer’s blind-side

AFTER: leaves for Cleveland in 1999. Cards use 4 LTs in 10 years since (Matt Joyce, LJ Shelton, Leonard Davis, Mike Gandy).

Suns head coach Terry Porter joined Burnsy, and he discussed the team’s lineup changes as well as gaining confidence as the season progresses.

It’s a Dunn deal

Happy Carlos Quentin Horrible Trade Anniversary! Yes, December 3rd marks one year since the D-Backs traded Quentin to the Chicago White Sox in exchange for Chris Carter. That one didn’t work out too well. Luckily the Dan Haren deal did. In fact, what a difference one year makes for the D-Backs. Last December Arizona added Haren to their roster to make a run at a World Series title. This December the Diamondbacks subtract Adam Dunn from theirs out of fear that they may have to pick up a $15 million tag.

So, now that Adam Dunn is officially done in Arizona, can we officially say the Dunn deal was a disaster? Burnsy can- in fact he is. After all, who would have signed on to trading Micah Owings to Cincinnati had the prospect of adding two high draft prospects not been there. This is a further indication that the Diamondbacks are not going to be too active this winter. But then again, in the NL West, who really is? Burnsy says the onus will really be on the Chris Youngs, Mark Reynolds, and Justin Uptons to step up this year. If they don’t, the D-Backs will certainly fall short once again. After all, they certainly aren’t getting any help this off-season. (With all due respect, Ramon Vasquez)

Tom Chambers joined Burnsy on “Talk to the Suns” to discuss the Suns daily soup opera. Although he doesn’t feel Amare is correct in questioning Terry Porter’s system, Chambers isn’t too surprised since veterans like Steve Nash and Raja Bell already had. All in all, though, Chambers still believes this Suns team has more talent than last year’s and can still put it all together. That’s if they don’t all break apart before Christmas.

God Bless You Tom

Call it fate or destiny or the butterfly effect. But if not for Tom Dillon I might not be writing this blog right now. Or I might not be married to my wife of nearly 14 years or the father of two wonderful children.

As a struggling pre-law student at the U of A, one morning in the fall of 1989 I had an epiphany. I wanted to be a sportscaster. I changed my major that day, but knew I was in for a rough time when I was told the U of A didn’t offer a Broadcast Journalism major, instead it was Media Arts.

It sounded silly and pointless and my father agreed. He spoke to his friend, ASU and Cardinal play by play man Tom Dillon. I went to high school with his daughters but had never met the man myself. And what he said – without hesitation – surprised me; Northern Arizona University. The best in the state he assured my father.

So based on nothing else, and I say that without exaggeration, I transferred to N.A.U. in the spring of 1991. I figured Tom Dillon would know of which he speaks.

Soon I was the Sports Anchor then Sports Director then News Director then Station Manager of the campus T.V. station. Shortly after that I met my wife. Soon after that I was awarded an internship in New York City with CBS Sports. Soon after that I got my first paid gig. And shortly after that I sought out Tom and told him my life story.

So in a way, both directly and indirectly, Tom Dillon is the reason I’m here. Maybe it would’ve happened anyway. But I’d like to think otherwise.

I am a native of Arizona. For the handful of people who are my age and can claim that fact, Tom along with Al McCoy, Greg Schulte, Lee “Hacksaw” Hamilton, Bill Denny, Jude LaCava, Brad Cesmat and many others, were the narrators, colorfully describing a sports town in its adolescence. The bridge between what was and what is.

His high-pitched touchdown call. The Rose Bowls. The early years of the Cardinals. The enormous travel he put in, calling both ASU and Cardinal games in the same weekend (you try getting from Pullman to Philly in the middle of the night). Soon Charles Barkley, the D-backs and Coyotes arrived. And suddenly Phoenix was a big time sports town.

If you just moved here in the last five to seven years, the name Tom Dillon will likely not stir any memories. And that’s a shame for you. They are wonderful memories that he provided the soundtrack for.

God Bless You Tom.

Amare in danger?

Amare Stoudemire is in danger.  Not in danger of lowering his scoring average, or his minutes, or even losing his star NBA status.  He’s in danger of becoming a Marbury/Iverson/Carter:  an NBA star only famous for being out for himself, an attraction not an icon.  Amare’s recent comments in a Stephen A. Smith article on ESPN.com have attracted all kinds of attention, but weren’t the warning signs there before.  Here are the warning signs for STAT over the past year:

The Many Faces of Amare:

1-06-08 Amare misses practice.  Blames it on having a sick child at home.

4-30-08 - Amare’s ready for a change.

April 30th, roughly 12 days before Mike D’Antoni accepted the New York Knicks head coaching position, and at a time when others like Steve Nash, Raja Bell, and Grant Hill were openly lobbying for D’Antoni to stay, Amare refers to D’Antoni in the past tense, saying he “was a pretty good coach when I was here.”

9-29-08 - Amare embraces change.

On Suns media day Amare seemed excited about the Porter era, and even more that the D’Antoni era was over:  “We’ve been playing a certain (style) over the past four years, and it hasn’t brought us a title.  So I definitely think it’s time for a change, and the change we’re making is a positive change.”

11-20-08- Amare starts to have 2nd thoughts.

After the Suns 105-92 loss to the Lakers, he embraces the coach he seemed so eager to see leave:  “We played so well here within the fast break under Coach D’Antoni.  With Terry Porter it’s a little different, so we have to adjust.”

11-28-08- Amare officially has 2nd thoughts.

In an ESPN.com article by Stephen A. Smith, Amare openly questions his role in the new Porter offense, and leaves an open ended feeling about where he’ll be playing in 2010.

Monday- Amare is asked if he has any regret about his comments in the ESPN.com piece.

His response:  “No”

Terry Porter joined Burnsy on “The Terry Porter Show”: and discussed Amare’s recent problems with the offense.

“(Amare) leads us in minutes, he leads us in shots, so from that standpoint he is our go-to-guy.  Sometimes every guy likes to get more.  I don’t know.”

There’s no shame

There’s no shame in losing to the NY Giants. There’s no shame in the way the Cardinals lost to the NY Giants. But what a shame that Arizona could not pick up a game on the Carolina Panthers, who lost a game in Atlanta yesterday that they should have won. The Cardinals should still figure to be one of the NFC’s top 3 seeds, but had they won against New York yesterday, the #2 seed would be a greater possibility. The possibility of winning in New York in January, after all, is not likely in the Cards, but what if someone else were to do Arizona that favor? Wouldn’t home-field against either Tampa Bay or Carolina be that much bigger of a deal? Winning on the East Coast has been a big deal for this team, but how does it rank on the list of problems for the Cardinals? Burnsy examines:

Cardinals Issues: Give them a pass or is it a problem?

. Running game (or lack there of) – Can’t keep opposing team off the field, can’t keep Kurt Warner off the ground = Big Problem

2. Inability to win a road game on the East Coast = Big Problem

3. Penalties – wasn’t a problem versus NY, but still have committed the third most in the league = Problem

4. Ken Whisenhunt Eccentricities - Fake FGs, onside kicks, free kick, Boldin at QB, Warner lead block = Give him a pass

5. Special Teams – coverage units, missed opportunities (Ralph Brown on onside kick) = Give them a pass

And Terry Porter joined Burnsy on his weekly show. Porter said as of right now he feels Shaq will play tomorrow in Oklahoma City against the 1-13 Thunder. One of the Suns best bench players will also be back, and Porter feels getting back on the court will be the best thing for Leandro Barbosa, after LB lost his mother this month. Porter said getting back on the court was a good release for him when he lost his mother.

What is Warner worth?

Kurt Warner’s MVP season may make him VIP this off-season.  But at age 37 is Warner worth as much as $12 mill per on the open market?  He doesn’t have too much tread on the tires due to a late start in the NFL.  But neither did Steve Young, or Rich Gannon- who coincidently won an MVP at age 37.  Gannon played a total of 10 games in the two seasons following.  Here is how some other prominent QBs did during their age 38 seasons:

Steve Young – lasted 3 games before career ending concussion.
Brett Favre – led Packers to NFC Championship, All-Pro – still playing
John Elway- led Broncos to Super Bowl- retired after
Warren Moon- started 15 games for Vikings, All-Pro – played 6 more seasons in the NFL, with 2 more All-Pro years
Vinny Testaverde -  started 16 games for Jets, who finished 10-6 – played 6 more seasons in the NFL, started 15 games for Dallas at age 41 (5-10).
Dan Marino – started 11 games, finished with career low 67.4 QB rating – retired after
Rich Gannon – Following MVP season at age 37 in 2002, started 7 games for Raiders (2-5).  Started 3 more the following year – retired after
Phil Simms – started 4 games for Giants (1-3), started all 16 the following year, All-Pro – retired after
Joe Montana – started 14 games for the Chiefs (9-5) - retired after
Dave Krieg – started 12 games for Bears (6-6), played 2 more seasons as a backup in Tennessee – retired after

The Boston Red Sox dumped salary.  That’s weird.  Even stranger is who took Coco Crisp’s $5.75 million off their hands:  Try the Kansas City Royals!  We tried to come with some other bizarre headlines in sports:

Rod’s bizarre headlines:
Iverson sets assists record
BCS praised for producing clear cut National Championship/Playoff Shunned
Favre retires quietly
Bill Parcells retires
Cubs win World Series
Marlins set baseball attendance record
Mike Shanahan accepts Raiders head coaching position

Amare Stoudemire wins NBA’s defensive player of the year award
Yankees rip A’s for Mark Ellis extension:  Steinbrenner says baseball salaries are “out of control”

Jarrett Carlen’s:
Kurt Warner has bad game, blames God in post game interview
Mike D A’ntoni runs grueling 5 hour practice with Knicks, preaches “defense”
Roger Clemens admits “Ok, I took steroids, big deal”
3 ASU Football players interviewing to be Rhodes Scholars
Isiah Thomas named executive of the year
Yao Ming passes AC Green for NBA consecutive games played record
Brock Lesnar first person to win NCAA Wrestling Championship, WWE Championship, UFC Championship, and Scrabble World Championship
Shawn Kemp named new spokesman for Trojan condoms

Bill Belicheck under investigation for illegally videotaping Tom Brady and Gisselle Buncheon in bed
Drew Rosenhaus announces that all of his clients will work for free next year
Blue Jackets/Thrashers regular season game narrowly surpasses the Superbowl as most watched sporting event of the year

And Burnsy ripped another co-worker.  Sam Youmans gets the honor for his use of “squirreling” in a e-mail.  Here was the sentence:   “I squirreled away a pair of Cardinals vs. Giants tickets for your Friday night road show.”   “Squirreling” is a strange verb, especially when stashing and hiding are available for use.
